The G4 is really _quite_ slow when you need to get on it, 400MHz isn't
happy-making for the 10.5 OS, which you must have to serve Time Machine
backups. It doesn't have gigabit Ethernet, and the separate SATA cards (2)
and cabling is a bit rickety. (I need 2 SATA cards, because if you put

I have just about exhausted all attempts to turn my $50 Mac Pro 1,1 into a
suitable replacement for the G4 Sawtooth that is our current file/web
server. Because it's 24x7 the power draw is a big issue. The G4 is
35-40W, headless, but the best I can beat out of the MP is 97W. That's

Professional AC repair is a racket. Quickie flush, replacement compressor,
test refrigerant, and an inline filter on the suction side and it should be

I.e. the Chevy Volt. A co-worker has one, loves it. It makes him run the
gas engine more than he'd like, just to keep the gas in it
