Re: [MBZ] Not much love for '60 or '71 vintage Fiats
During the 1940s-50s a neighbor in a student trailer park had a little Italian sports car which had no problems other than headgaskets. This was the days when torque wrenches were rare and you could pull down a head on nearly any American car using two fingers on the end of a breakover handle. I put a head gasket on the Italian car using the two finger method but it soon began leaking. I told him to find a mechanic or shop that had a torque wrench and that solved his problem. It was a valve-in-block engine, so it wasn't a big job. I don't remember what make it was but I don't think it was a Fiat although it could have been. It was fun to drive and you could keep up with nearly any sports car on a winding road with sharp curves. There were several other small sports cars that raced together around Florida; Triumphs, Morgans, MGs, and others. I don't remember there being any Mercedes or other European sports cars in that group, however. I was thinking 'Isn't 103 the one with the widespread acceptance of missile conspiracy theories? So I looked it up. This 383 page report rules out the 'we saw it shot down by a missile' claims: http://ntsb.org/Wiringcargodoor/home_files/SmithAAR103fffallpartapA-N_1.pdf The AAIB report concludes that the detonation of an improvised explosive device led directly to the destruction of the aircraft with the loss of all 259 persons on board and 11 of the residents of the town of Lockerbie. Five recommendations are made of which four concern flight recorders, including the funding of a study to devise methods of recording violent positive and negative pressure pulses associated with explosions. This Smith Pan Am Flight 103 AAR concludes that there are four reasonable alternatives to the bomb explanation based on the subsequent similar accidents of United Airlines Flight 811 and Trans World Airlines Flight 800. Of the four reasonable alternatives, two can be ruled out with confidence: Missile strike and center fuel tank explosion; and two ruled in: Firing of a rather large shotgun and the shorted wiring/forward cargo door rupture/explosive decompression/inflight breakup explanation which closely matches the probable cause of the United Airlines Flight 811 accident. Since the discovered hazards of faulty wiring or switch and nonplug cargo doors currently exist in the five hundred early model Boeing 747s in service, further official investigation is warranted and urgently needed. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

I just watched a superb Smithsonian Channel program on the Lockerbie crash of Pan Am flight 103. I had mistakenly thought the plane was brought down by a bomb that a girl had transported on board that was given to her by an acquaintance. That was not the case, however. Re: [MBZ] DIY Paintless Dent Removal
Got the PDR tools today. Comments: Kit is reasonably complete, I'll also need some alcohol (empty spray bottle included in kit), a glass protector panel to slip inside doors to keep the picks from scratching the glass, a heat gun for warming the paint in sharp creases, some longer picks in the 30-45" range to reach the bottoms of doors, and it would be handy to have an airbag door spreader in addition to the plastic door wedge. The kits on AliExpress have instruction booklets, this one does not. Plenty of instruction materials on Youtube and I can always buy a DIY book or two. Space is limited in the tool bag, but you can cram all the non-pick tools in it and get it zipped shut if you try hard enough. I even managed to get the LED line board and a USB wall plug in there. Has a few pockets in the sides to hold the glue tabs, knockdown punches, hand puller etc. If you use the bag you'll find yourself digging for whatever is in the bottom of the pile in the bag. Everything appears to be cheap but serviceable, except the pick tools aren't polished to a mirror finish and the flat bladed picks have a milled texture on the sides almost like they're files. Not only would the milled picks take the paint off the inside the panel, I bet they'd emboss their texture in thin fenders and it would show through the paint. It'll take some grinding/sanding/buffing before I'd dare use those things. I haven't tried the LED line board so I don't know if it'll stick solidly to a car or not, and I suspect the lighting is inadequate. Maybe I should have bought a set with an unlit reflecting line board instead. I guess you get what you pay for. Chinese PDR picks usually run around $10ea when you buy a set, and I don't know if they're any better than the ones in this kit. I got ten picks included in a $125 kit, the nonpick items basically duplicate the $90 sets on AliExpress, and similar sets of ten picks run $70-100. > On October 9, 2017 at 12:02 AM Mitch Haley via Mercedes >wrote: > http://www.ebay.com/itm/262977911935 ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

I'm using Startron for diesel. It has cleaned the tank from black in the primary filter to clear green diesel. Re: [MBZ] Diesel additive
ULSD shouldn’t be that big of a deal for the most part. I use the RedLine to be sure there’s plenty of lubricity in the fuel, and it’s inexpensive. A 12 ounce bottle is about $10 at Pep Boys, the only local FLAPS that carries it, or I’ve also bought gallons in the past which are far less expensive. That works out to about $0.80/tank, a small price to pay. Because I don’t live in an area with cold temperatures I don’t worry about gelling or water in my fuel, so additives that address those issues aren’t important to me. Stanadyne also makes a really good additive similar to RedLine that is good. I figure if the IP guys like the stuff, it’s probably a good idea. -D > On Oct 10, 2017, at 5:07 PM, Kaleb C. You can go through the sign-up process for free, then when you're logged in you can add cars to your watchlist. When in your watchlist or on the search screen, you can check "no license required" in the top section of the filter options on the left, and watch 90% of the cars disappear. If you try to bid on that car while logged in as an unlicensed bidder, it'll take you to a 'find a broker' menu. You should be able to find a company that will set you up to bid under their license and process the title paperwork for $200-300. Watch out for some of the brokers who list their fee at $100-200, then when you go to their web site and read the fine print there are other fees not included in the $100 markup. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Thanks Larry! Here is a link to my Google Drive folder. I spent a lot of time making sure I could find the spot for each fastener as I put it all back together. Re-assembly would have been faster if I had color-marked each hole like Wilton did when he did the Evapectomy on his 124 300D (Rich and I found all those markings as we took it apart). My Harbor Freight cordless driver was very handy for all the spots that were big enough I could reach, made work go much faster. - Max Charleston SC On Tue, Oct 10, 2017 at 6:59 AM, Larry Turner via Mercedes < mercedes@okiebenz.com> wrote: > Way to go Max! Solder is used to _seal_ and secure a low-resistance mechanical connection between the copper wires, very little current is actually preferentially going through the more resistive lead as compared to the copper, unless the mechanical joint is poor.
