Seems that tampered data is considered "at risk". There was
concern that the data might be removed from the web by the current
administration.

[MBZ] Leaf/snow blower

2018-01-05 Thread WILTON via Mercedes
Coupla weeks ago, I needed a leaf blower to clean up leaves around edges of
yard, walkways and driveway - areas I can't finish properly by mulching with
the JD garden tractor/mower the way I do the main lawn areas. Found
battery-operated, 60 volt model at Lowe's that I can handle while using my
walker and/or riding the mower. Normally at $250, it was "on sale" for $200, I
offered the saleslady $150. She called her super, who accepted. 'Got to cash
register, where it was marked down some more, and I reminded the cashier of my
military discount for additional reduction. 'Brought it home for $109. Worked
great for blowing the leaves.

This afternoon SWMBO used it very effectively for blowing snow (~2+ inches) off
front portico and walkway to the street. I then used it to clear path from
kitchen to car.

'Well satisfied with it's performance so far.

2018-01-05 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Tonight is supposed to be the last night it is below freezing for a few
days. According to the current forecast, the next 5 nights are to be 35
or more.

Too Late for the lantana, even though it was covered. All the leaves
are freeze dried. I am guessing it is all dead to the ground, but some
of the branches may survive.

The sego palm is happy as a clam.

I have not gone out to look at the camellia, but the blossoms will be
all frozen.

There are fast growing shrubs/brush that looks like a sheffelaria (SP?)
and the leaves on them are frostbitten, but maybe not dead. I have
never seen them frostbitten before, but it was around 20 several
nights. The coolest I ever saw it here before was 23-24.

Azalea blooms are gone. They had been fooled into thinking spring had

Worth noting that these often wear out because people don't loosen the pivot
bolts on the alternator and on the rack itself. This causes excessive
strain/wear on the teeth and eventual failure. Also helps to use a pry bar,
which should be no problem on a W123 240D... lots of room in there.

Well, with the 8V92 on a good day with careful management, I get 4 Miles

gallons per hour unless it's up hill and I dial the fuel up to make the
grade in a hard pull... then. as they say... "Your Mileage May Vary"

With the 6V92's I would see 7 MPG to 10 MPG again, always being careful
to keep the engine loaded in the "diesel sweet spot" of RPM / Torque.

Vehicle empty weight was 28,000 lbs on the 8V92, it's 40,000 lbs

The alternator belt on my 78 240D cannot be properly tightened because
the “rack and pinion” teeth on the mounting bracket are all worn. This

yep, and as long as you send yer money to albore, you'll be ok!

I think it was 1970-72 that Popular Science had the cover about "the

at about 1974. Only then albore was too young so he couldn't make
zillions on it and fly around. So it went away.

Show me a SPC control chart of the (actual, not tampered) temps going
back say 500 or 1000 years, and you will see nothing is out of control.
A guy in Alaska asked today if global warming is real, or un natural,

I swear that in elementary school they were teaching me about global
cooling (or rather, the Coming Ice Age), and how it was human
society's fault, at least in part. Ten years ago it was Global
Warming, and 100% our fault. Now it's Global Climate Change, and
apparently any weather pattern is evidence of its existence. It's hot?
That's Climate Change for you. It's colder than it's been in 20 years?
That's Climate Change too.

Re: [MBZ] OT Winter Mess Charleston

2018-01-05 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
My theory works! On the second full day after the snow-pocalypse, either
Darwin or common sense or human learning had prevailed; the bad drivers had
all crashed and were out of the game, or got scared and stayed home, _OR_
the bad drivers learned and became better drivers.

Yesterday we actually drove around twice, a grocery run at lunch time and
another grocery / movie run in the evening. No incapable drivers were
encountered. Daytime the roads were pretty decent with lots of wet and
then icy slushy places that were shaded, but after dark the roads were
REALLY bad with black ice all over the place. I tried to coax SWMBO into
taking the driver's seat in an empty parking lot so she could practice up
on her winter driving skills but she declined, that is now my job.

Today we made another run at lunch time, more drivers out and about
compared to yesterday and a few made me nervous but we made it home
unscathed and with clean underwear. The drivers that really made me shake
my head would find themselves on a long icy patch, so they would apply
their brakes and lose traction / control. I followed one driver (at a safe
distance) that did it twice.

That’s possible as we do have a lot of wasps, but having kept bees I can assure
you that most of the pollinators visiting the tree are honeybees.

The trapper we use to clear our park of wild boars of which I referred to
previously sells most of his catch to the Latino community in the area. He
says they pay very, very well for a whole live boar and there’s always a demand.

I swear that in elementary school they were teaching me about global cooling
(or rather, the Coming Ice Age), and how it was human society's fault, at least
in part. Ten years ago it was Global Warming, and 100% our fault. Now it's
Global Climate Change, and apparently any weather pattern is evidence of its
existence. It's hot? That's Climate Change for you. It's colder than it's been
in 20 years? That's Climate Change too.

It likely needs links and rear subframe mounts. Not that hard or
expensive, but fiddley. I have some used parts that could be re-bushed,
and some links that are ok, but were replaced "just cuz" I was in
there... Or I can sell you all the new links off the POS FL 124.

rusted out subframe / subframe mount / control arm.

[MBZ] WTF day

2018-01-05 Thread clay monroe via Mercedes
I posted the POS W220 on SL as a car again, and got heavy interest. Nobody
showed up. I went to give it a once over this morning, but the one year old
battery is dead. I put it on the charger.

The SDL with weird light issue is still unresolved, but I may pull the cluster
to see if maybe the bulbs are in a wrong place. The SD has the holes numbered,
as are the wires. It too has this red light trouble upon occasion. Same
location, and the bulbs and wires are where they belong.

I went to the PnP yesterday to scavenge the W123 that was just placed. I was
looking for a maybe Kilma, but someone else got all the interesting relay. I
thought maybe I could need the IP and Injectors, or the turbo. Instead I
pulled the VDO CC, some of the vac tubes that run to the critter on top of the
valve cover (I grabbed that as well), and the thing that might be the glow
relay. #2 boy has a y2k jeep that may have bollixed stereo, so I grabbed an
upgraded on with CD player for him.

The stuff from the 300D was nasty with all manner of schmutz. Looks like
nobody took any care of the under hood area it was so encrusted with black tar.
I have to clean the haul up before I bring it into the house. At least the
vac hoses give me a clue as to how the SD is supposed to be wired up. I have
been searching for the brown hose connected to the shut off valve, but all I
found was a clear hose. Seeing how it mounted in the w123, allowed me to see
the connection on the SD. Different connections, and some PO had done splice
and dice which obscured things. Brown hose was near the fuse box.

Connections on the SD looked good and seemed to be sort of the same as the D
layout. Cold start is just fine on the SD, but warm start is still not good.
It really feels like a fuel issue, so I will check the main fuel filter.
Planned to change it with the oil change this weekend.

Not sure I mentioned this before, but #2 son was being transported to SEA for
his flight to ANC. He put his stuff in the trunk then see that the antenna is
up and might be in the way of the boot closing, so he sweeps it out of the way,
bending the crap out of it.This is the OLD style with the big posts, not
the newer sort. Anybody know if Becker has a repair option for this?

[MBZ] Fun with W210

2018-01-05 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
On Wednesday I helped youngest son change the oil on his 2002 E320. Pretty
straightforward job.

He mentioned the engine had been “ticking”, which I would have attributed to a
lifter or cam, but when I got the hood open it was pretty clear where the noise
was coming from - there was a chunk out of the edge of the serpentine belt and
at least one of the grooves had exited the belt and was in the bottom of the
engine compartment on the top of the cover.

Since I have multiple cars that use the same parts, I had a belt on the shelf.
A breaker bar for leverage, a 17mm socket, and less than two minutes later a
new belt was installed.

Replaced a failed right side driving light bulb while we were at it as well.

I reset the FSS and will see it again in 5000 miles (my service interval, not
MBs.)

When we picked up our '85 TD in Punta Gorda, we spent a few days in the area
then set off for space coast across 70.

Somewhere before we turned off to visit friends at Placid Lakes, we saw an huge
pig, probably a boar, dead by the side of the road.

I only took my eyes off the road for a second and nearly hit a small pony.
('Twas a boar).

Much swerving and invective followed, and the haste to "get there faster" faded.

It may not have been as big as a moose, but at about 60 mph it would have
spoiled our day and the car.

We have a local trapper that comes in with his dogs and traps them for free.
He’s given me lots of pork in return. Yum.

He has a couple of dogs that he uses to trap the boars, it’s really pretty
cool. One is a hound (bay) that finds them, the other a (catch) mastiff sort
of dog (I don’t know what he breed is) that catches the boars by the throat and
holds them until he can get there, snare them and put them in a cage. Both of
the dogs wear these big heavy leather collars with spikes on them.

Sounds like a great experience and a great meal. The key to anything
that might be tough is low and slow.

At noon I just had some more of my Man Candy(TM) Home cured corn beef
brisket, so tender it melts in you mouth m (cooked low
and slow)

My cousins and uncle in Hawaii hunted wild boar regularly. I never got
in on any hunt nor the meals. Uncle had an o3A3 (30-06) he used to get
em. Some of the Hawaiian crazies tried to get in close and cut the
jugular with a knife. A lot of dogs got killed by the pigs.

Bruce Gamble, in The Black Sheep describes a situation in the South
Pacific, were wild hogs were wrecking things, so a fence was set up to
keep them out. The fence was of limited success. The CO had made it
clear nobody could shoot them. So the ever creative Yankees opened the
gat to the fenced area, waited until all the hogs were inside, closed the
gate. They then tried to club the hogs, but some of the boars were
troublesome, so they let them out and clubbed the rest. The resulting
pigroast fed fresh meat to over 500 men of two squadrons including
ground personnel!

Yes, wild hog is good eatin'. Just be sure to cut off certain parts of

Lizards falling off trees reminds me of the Shmoo (plural Shmoon) invented
by cartoonist Al Capp.

Shmoos ".. reproduce asexually and are incredibly prolific, multiplying
exponentially faster than rabbits. They require no sustenance other than
air.
- Shmoos are delicious to eat, and are eager to be eaten. If a human looks
at one hungrily, it will happily immolate itself — either by jumping into a
frying pan, after which they taste like chicken, or into a broiling pan,
after which they taste like steak. When roasted they taste like pork, and
when baked they taste like catfish. (Raw, they taste like oysters
 on the half-shell.)"

2018-01-05 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Was that in Indiana?  That storm hit there a few days before, I was
stuck in Ft Wayne until the street got cleared of about 30" of snow, and
then to dig the car out of that.  Lost a coupla days from what I had
intended.  I was headed back to Cambridge, got to the Ohio border and
the snow was pretty much nonexistent so the drive back east was fine.
Got back, hit the grocery to stock up, next day was headed out to a
western suburb to collect my plants from a friend's house, got about 2
miles after the snow started and within a short time there was about 4"
on the ground.  I told my friend who was with me we needed to turn back,
she agreed, so we did, there was maybe 8" by the time we got back to my
apartment on campus.

The registration day movie was that night (Deep Throat!) so she stayed
and we fixed supper.  After the movie (the distributor sent the "clean"
version which did not go over well) she caught the last bus back to
Hahvahd Squah for about 4-5 days.  The next day we had 70mph winds and
ended up with maybe 36" of snow, I didn't see my car for about 2 weeks.
I was on the 19th floor of the building, looking out at Beacon Hill in
Boston, it was wild.  The full moon rose that night after the snow
stopped and it had cleared off, it was surreal, power was off over there
for a coupla days from flooded power lines and underground transformers,
you could see some candles and flashlights and the occasional snowmobile
but it was dark buildings in a sea of white snow with the full moon
illuminating it all from behind.  Pretty amazing. The City was pretty
much shut down for a week, classes were delayed, but they did manage to
get the subway running pretty quickly so I walked down to her place in
Hahvahd Squah (great time, people were serving up fresh cookies and hot
chocolate on Mass Ave, it was a great party time) and we took the train
into Boston to see Close Encounters at the movies, we were the only
people in there.

Fun times!

While the python thing is purely south Florida/Everglades, understand that they
are extremely difficult to catch. The state has a very nice bounty on them,
but I don’t think there are many caught on an annual basis.

Again, iguanas are not common this far north, as it’s not a tropical subclimate
like south Florida is. We have little skinks and lizards, but no iguanas like
they showed in the story.

Got a lot of wild boars, however. How’s about a pig roast?

That’s what we refer to them as. I’ve never tried to pick one or eat them. I
look at it as a contribution to keeping the local flora and fauna alive.
Especially the bees, as I used to keep bees when I lived in Indiana. And I
understand that picking the fruit won’t affect the bees….

Re: [MBZ] OT - Mesh WiFi Networks

2018-01-05 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I have no complaints about the quality or functionality of NetGear’s products,
I just don’t like the fact that stuff seems to become legacy hardware in a far
shorter time period than other vendors.

It did affect my NAS, as I bonded the two NICs using the firmware options, and
there’s no way to “unbond” them because they stopped supporting the device
shortly after adding the option. It was supposed to be a part of the option
but they dropped support before they finished development.

So now I have a NAS with bonded NICs that I can’t separate.

I tried Netgear after several failures of other brands, and the Netgear has
lasted the longest here. YMMV. I do get updates for the Netgear stuff, even

It got down to freezing the last two nights. Might make it up to the low 50s

Iguanas are more of a south Florida thing. We do have lizards in our trees and
bushes, however, but I haven’t seen any fall out. Kitty will alert me if that
happens, as she likes to patrol the front windows to watch the ornamental fig
tree this time of year. It’s a (literal) beehive of activity with bees, birds

[MBZ] Jim Cathey saves the snowmobile club!

2018-01-05 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
The snowmobile club gets paid to groom by the state, that's essentially our
whole business. We get that money once a week only, miss a week and the money
is gone. The ASV is our smallest big groomer, it's 6 feet wide, and is
notoriously hard to start. I've pondered the issue for two years with no chance
to try any of my ideas.Well today the new ASV driver decided it's too cold, he
doesn't want to kill his new batteries failing to start it. I had the day off
and one of the other operators asked me to go check it out. Step one was to
make sure the block heater works, my ir thermometer proved that. Step two was
to install batteries, dual grp 49s. I spent as much time cleaning terminals as
I did installing batteries.Step three was to try it and here's where Mr Cathey
came in. I stuck my Harbor Freight heat gun in the air intake and cranked.
After a few seconds it fired up. I don't know how to work the glow plugs work
so I think this was mostly without them, guess I better learn... ;)
Anyway, thanks to Jim for figuring out the heat gun trick and making me look
smarter than I am!
