Re: [MBZ] OT: The best way to spend black Friday

2018-11-27 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Nice.

I had a whole week to go to the range with my new (to me) Lanber 2099 shotgun.
I never got around to it, unfortunately. When I went a week or two ago for
pistol practice I took it wth me and just ran through four stands, and got 14
out of 16, which I was quite pleased with. My boss finally broke down and
bought a Mossberg 500 or Remington 370, I don’t recall which one, from Dick’s
over Thanksgiving, so he’s chomping at the bit to go out after work, so I’m
sure I’ll get out soon.

Youngest son came home the other day with a Sig MPX-K 9mm. WTF for, I have no
idea. Just don’t get the AR mentality. Want a pistol? Buy a pistol!

Kids these days….

[MBZ] OT: The best way to spend black Friday

As usual my dad and I spent black Friday at the range. This was my first
opportunity to shoot last year's Christmas present:
https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4874/45152868525_9d850493b0_b.jpg
Swedish made Remington rolling block in 8x58r, the round is often called the
"Danish Kraig". Its quite powerful, in the 30-06 class. Originally a black
powder gun they were converted to smokeless, mine is dated 1892 for the
conversion. Dad has been playing with loads, it was working pretty well with a
220gr jacketed bullet. I need more time shooting it, I rough at best.
I also shot my Mossberg 500 with the slug barrel to get ready for deer season.
If all goes as planned (blah) I'll get 2 days of shotgun
season.https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4856/32193409368_72deeba77b_b.jpg
The lower bulls are where I started sighting in, I'm reasonably happy with it
considering its got a shotgun trigger...
Dad brought out his 25-20, the scope is reproduction but period. He shoots
really well with it, I can barely make it hit the ground:
https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4864/32193405758_f0a4fe9d05_b.jpg
Finally I dialed in my black powder deer gun, I'll only get 2 days of shotgun
season but should have 5 or 6 of black powder season:
https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1754/27872740887_471c6a931d_b.jpgThis was only
the second time I've gotten to shoot it since I bought it in February, it took
a long time to work up a good load, finally settled on .530 roundball, 50gr of
black powder with a .010 greased patch. Oiled patches blew out and didn't
impart good spin to the ball, .015 patches were too thick to load. I'm really
pleased with the result.

Don’t Windex them, buy the foamy window cleaner that is approved for use on
window tint. It does a much better job.

I like Stoner “Invisible Glass”. Works well on all glass surfaces and is safe
to use on window tint, something that’s important both here and in AZ.

Could be worse, like this 2004 SLK320 with stupid low miles (19k?) on it. They
put it up a couple of weeks ago at like $15k-$16k with no takers, now it’s down
to $11k.

https://www.lokeynissan.com/VehicleDetails/used-2004-Mercedes_Benz-SLK_Class-SLK320-Clearwater-FL/3329023403

If it wasn’t a six speed crashbox I would go make them a stupid offer, like
maybe $8k. Wife doesn’t drive a stick, and I’m not about to try and teach her.
That’s probably one of the things working against this car. Too bad, it
actually looks pretty nice.

There are people who match up cells from junkyard batteries and sell them as
refurbished.
The problem is that once a few cells start dying, their identical twins will
probably be getting there in another year or two.
I can see taking the best 28 cells out of two battery packs and reselling the
car, but I don't see the point of doing that and keeping it, at least not as
long as I tend to keep cars.

Kolifornia can not make enough power for its own uses. PNW is pretty strapped
as well. Unless Mr. Buffet has plans to own the power grid and build out to
meed the forecasted need, there is little probability electric only cars will
rule the road.

A quick search suggests that power demand is lowest between  about 2 and
4 AM and highest around 6 PM.
Car charging plugs would need to be on timers that would prevent people
from charging their cars outside of the middle of the night. Otherwise,
people would forget to plug in when they got home and would plug in for
a bit when they got up - which is a time when demand ramps up.

This may all happen but I hope it is 40 or 50 years away. I will be gone
and it will not matter to me.

The problem with the quote below is that I know the 1.6L had weak head gaskets
back in the 1970s.
And don't get me started on the 1990s SVX.

https://carfromjapan.com/article/industry-knowledge/the-history-of-subaru-head-gasket-problem/

The models that have this failed gasket problem are:

 Impreza (from 1999 to 2011)
 Forester (from 1999 to 2010)
 Legacy (from 2000 to 2009)
 Outback (from 2000 to 2009)
 Baja (from 2003 to 2006)

___

I wonder about parts availability too. I read on a forum, not too long
back, about someone who was upset because their Subaru had a cracked oil
pan - cast aluminum - and there were none available even in Japan. The
vehicle was out of service until they could find something which was not
proving to be easy.

The oil pressure sensor on top of the engine needs replaced cause it’s weeping,
there is a small exhaust leak. The one thing that is odd is that the passenger
rear tire is bald down to the belts, and the others show expected wear for a
year old. The doofus owner says he’s done nothing to the tire since he bought
them. If it were an alignment issue or a strut issue wouldn’t it drive all
wonky? It drove wonderfully.

I didn't have any real issue talking on a phone before hands free became
common. The bigger problem is texting. That pretty much requires that
one focus on the device rather than the road.

It is getting expensive around here if one is caught using the phone
without hands free. The fine is now $672 and I think 2 demerit points.

The problem with the quote below is that I know the 1.6L had weak head gaskets
back in the 1970s.
And don't get me started on the 1990s SVX.

The models that have this failed gasket problem are:

Impreza (from 1999 to 2011)

The Volt is a better idea that the Prius as its a series hybrid, the gas
engine only powers the electric motor which powers the wheels, this cuts down
on the extra weight of the parallel drive train.
I think we can call the battery concerns of the old days overblown, the
batteries are all third party and have proven themselves, the Prius after all

Agreed. I thought it was stupid when it first came out but I have seen
some of them on the road and am coming around to the idea that it might
be a decent vehicle. I wonder how long the battery is good for and what
it costs to replace or repair it.
I also wonder why GM is dropping it given their stated intention to
invest a bundle in electric car development. It would seem logical to
keep the only one they have going in the interim.

Onroad anyway. Offroad in really deep snow flotation is your friend. If we'd

down to float on the snow better.

I used to regularly drive a chunk of I-35 that was relatively straight
for quite a few miles, then a gentle curve of 35-40 degrees or so,
before it went the other way in a big s.

The first snow was quite amusing if you went through about 8 am.  There
would be maybe 10-30 (2 WD) cars in the ditches before "SUVs" became
popular.

When the majority of vehicles were high center of gravity 4WD "SUVs" a
few years later, 25=50% of the vehicles were on the side or rolled
over;  and with even a slight snow, there would be 50-100 in the
ditches, sometimes so many that anyone sliding off was likely to hit one
or more in the ditch.  Most of these people drove the same road to work
every day, but never learned.

4wd has no more contact patches (between the tar and the road) than
2wd.  In face, the 4wd usually has bigger/wider tires with not much
change in vehicle weight, resulting in less lb/sq in pressure on those 4
small contact patches.  Even though there is more surface area, the
lighter pressure makes it easier to slide.  Think about it.  does an
ice skater use snowshoes or a blade to make the contact with the ice
surface?  could they gain more control with more contact area?

In fact the reverse is true: the slicker it gets, the smaller and
narrower the tire should be.  This principle goes for ice and snow
both.  You DON'T want to "float" on snow while driving.

The loose nut behind the wheel thinks "I have 4WD, I don't have to slow
down on the snow/ice?  When they slide into the ditch at high speed,
the high center of gravity of their "invincible SUV" results in
rollovers where my SDL, had I been as stupid, would have stayed upright.

If you went though about 7:30 am, it was downright scary with idiots
sliding off all around you and going in the ditch.  They'd go flying by
, then loose it and slide left or right, bashing anything in the way

The only one they have going now is the Bolt.
I have a feeling the Bolt with its giant battery was cutting into Volt sales,
especially since we're being told that nobody wants sedans any more.

Re: [MBZ] SNOW!

2018-11-27 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
That reminds me, a few winters ago I was driving in a snowstorm. It wasn't
that bad out, the roads were salted well, I was driving the pickup but in 2wd.
In front of me at a stoplight was a Honda SUV, as we pulled away from the light
she accelerated hard and then when the road turned slightly to the right she
veered right off the right side of the road. At first I thought she'd slid but
on later reflection I realized she must have been looking at her phone or
something as she didn't slow down or try to steer out of it.
I stopped to help and of course it was all my fault that she had driven off the
road, she claimed it was "so slippery she couldn't stay on the road at all" and
somehow my big truck being behind her had made it worse.
She'd gotten it so far into the ditch she couldn't drive it out and I couldn't
see anywhere on it to hook on a strap. She "called her husband" and he was "on
his way" so I took off and left her there...

I don't think Floyd is saying 4WD is bad - just that the it seems
a lot of people seem to think. "The car has 4WD, so I don't have
to slow down, or drive more carefully just because there is snow.
The 4WD will means I can go anywhere at any speed!"

I find it interesting that during a recent snow here I had to
drive in it - and I saw about 6 vehicles in the ditch - 5 were
four-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive.  Since I _know_ the
mechanicals improve the performance is those conditions, it sure
suggests its the loose nut behind the wheel that is the source of
the problem.

When I first heard about the Volt, I figured it was the worst of both worlds.
Worse fuel economy than a Cruze on the hwy running on gas, not enough battery
range to be a viable electric car.

But in talking to people who own them, it works in practice. They charge it up
when they're home, let it run in hybrid mode when it's low on charge, and even
with some extra running on the gas engine just to keep it active they get over
200mpg not counting the cost of electricity.
Even on a long trip, like 1200 miles to Florida, I bet I could get over 45
miles per gallon in a 2nd generation Volt. Run electric for the first 50 miles,
let it recharge some on the downhills in Kentucky and Tennessee, and finish
with the battery at 20%.

Mitch.

They've lowered the CG a couple inches in most of them.

The drivers are WORSE now. Sitting behind the wheel is time to shave,
apply makeup paste, text, read books or newspapers, kindles etc etc. it
is not considered important to drive. Let the nanny do that. I don't
have to slow down in snow, "My SUV is invincible."

I look at what other drivers are doing on the interstate. It gets more
scary each trip. Probably 50% now are not driving. YMMV, and I'd guess
in the big cities it is worse.

One of the worst distracted drivers I have seen was a "Professional" who
just got on the interstate from his company yard, a major flatbed
hauler. THis guy was all over 2 lanes and the shoulder in a congested
area. I guessed he was chasing a puppy all over the cab in place of
driving. he would go on the shoulder, to the left lane, back to the
shoulder, repeat, repeat. I called the company and reported him to the
dispatch, who said "Oh,, that's Bob, he's one of our best drivers. He's
OK. Then I called back and got the safety office. Their attitude was

it is the chickenpox

The medico biz is sloowly coming around to see that letting kids get
chickenpox, measles and mumps is better than shooting 60-80 vaccines
into kids, or whatever the current number is.

We all got chickenpox and measles, and many got mumps. It was no big
deal, just a few days or a week out of skool for each, and that was a treat!

Sounds right, but if your risk factor is high consider paying out of
pocket

for it. I do believe that a link has been established to a virus from one
of the common childhood diseases, such that if you've had measles (?? I
think?) then you are at higher risk for shingles.

Re: [MBZ] Slow big trucks - was: SNOW!

2018-11-27 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Thanks Philip.

It sounds to me that before these nannies existed, a driver had the ability
to get a "running start" for a hill and exceed the speed limit for bit on
the approach, or when passing another truck a driver could exceed the speed
limit (within prudence) to complete the maneuver more quickly, so as to
avoid disrupting / annoying the 4-wheeled vehicles. One of the rules of
the road I was taught in driver ed was "go with the flow" and do my part to
contribute to a smooth and predictable flow of traffic.

Common sense and courtesy not allowed now, nannies will force us to comply,
no matter the consequence. I think the design engineers and bean counters
need to ride shotgun for a few weeks in a truck, and see what they have
wrought. Probably another case of living only in an urban setting and no
experience living in a rural setting.

I hate nannies, in all their various forms.

I was told ins would not pay anytime. But ins pays for any other
vaccine. Makes no sense to me. I guess insco figgers they don't have
to pay for much other than an OC if you get shingles. I hope all those
insco executives get shingles bad.

Of course, the company probably pays for THEM to get the vaccine

Re: [MBZ] SNOW!

2018-11-27 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes

Exactly!

Don't knock it. 4 wheel drive is a wonderful thing in winter.
