[MBZ] OT: vacuum cleaner

2018-12-02 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
You are absolutely right. The bagless things are POS. They take a lot
more time to empty/clean than a regular Hoover with a HEPA bag and they
don't clean any better, if as well. They are banking on the fact that
many people will use it a few times and throw it out. Then they can
sell another machine.

I think the bag-less part is rather gimmicky, the clear container that
fills up with dirt makes you think you are really cleaning, really getting
something done, boy-oh-boy look at all that dirt and hair and stuff! But
then you've got to empty that container and wash out the parts, and if
you're OCD like me you end up wasting an extra twenty minutes cleaning the
darn container and special vortex-generating parts.

Re: [MBZ] OT: rechargeable stick vacuum cleaner

2018-12-02 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
While I have no experience with the Dyson "stick" things, I do like our
Dyson Ball vacuum. Lightweight and quiet. Look for a sale - the normal
prices are really too high for what you get. Take a look at Dyson's
cordless, might be spendy but I'll bet it works pretty good. We've got a
Swiffer vacuum for our hard floors (tile / wood) and I really like it but
the battery only lasts for about 1.5 rooms. It's also very noisy.

I think the bag-less part is rather gimmicky, the clear container that

something done, boy-oh-boy look at all that dirt and hair and stuff! But

Make a police report, with your sheriff. They need to know, you'll get more
support if you have evidence of vandalism. If there is further criminal
activity in the future, you'll be able to build up pressure for the sheriff

Re: [MBZ] OT: rechargeable stick vacuum cleaner

2018-12-02 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
The thing I really like about our central vacuum is that it exhausts outside
the house! It is a bit of a chore dealing with a hose, but I am OK with that. I
had an issue where my powerhead clogged up with dog hair that got sucked up
behind a napkin which got stuck in the pivot point on the powerhead just below
where the wand connects, and I had to blow it all out from the top with the
shop vac which was a bit ugly but did the trick!

Re: [MBZ] Pensacola

2018-12-02 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
I shook hands with two presidents, including George HW Bush at a receiving
line at a diplomatic function in NYC in 1973. Very decent guy.

15 years earlier I met JFK in an elevator at my local NY public library
when he was a US Senator. He was all alone and looked impressive in his
navy blue cashmere overcoat (it was the winter of 1958) We were staunch
Democrats so my mother made a point of telling JFK how much we admired
him. He had an aura about him that even I as a kid recognized was special.

Re: [MBZ] no cranky 87 td

2018-12-02 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
you need to jump the Big terminal (B+) at the solenoid to the little
terminal on the side of the solenoid. If that does nothing, then jump
the big B+ one to the bottom one, direct to the windings. If the first
does not start the car, and the starter turns (but won't engage) with
the latter, the solenoid is bad, but the starter may still need to be
replaced. My bet is still that the starter is bad.

Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
December 2, 2018 at 7:30 PM
Shorting the pins at the terminal block does nothing. I jumped the car
also, and the behavior did not change. I did note that shifting the car
into and out of park and neutral while the switch is in the start position
caused dimming of all the dash lights, implying a short in the system and
also implying that the neutral safety switch is operating correctly.

Beg to differ. For $200 you can have a Eufy that will not only pick up all
the stuff but it will do it at a scheduled time every day while you are
elsewhere. What the robot lacks in power it will more than make up for in
persistence. The area under it's time vs suction curve is huge because it
makes the time factor - it vacuums more than you ever will.

[MBZ] Pensacola

2018-12-02 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
The Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola is free to visit, and WELL worth
the time. It also houses a sizable research library for all things
related to Naval Aviation. The Museum has the pilot's log book from on
George H.W. Bush, an ordinary Navy pilot. He was the pilot of torpedo
bombers. From my reading, it appears that torpedo bomber crews had the
shortest life expectancy of any Naval Aviator, at least until late in
the war, when Japanese ships became more scarce. It took guts to fly
into fire that broght down most torpedo bombers before they returned to
the ship. The last time he was shot down, he was the only survivor of
his group, according to the article linked below.

RIP President Bush

http://time.com/5468640/george-hw-bush-military-service-navy/

I say he was an ordinary pilot because he did what most of his
generation did. Went off to rid the world of murderous dictators.
That was ordinary. He was an ordinary pilot. But what his generation
did as a whole, was extraordinary! Being president makes him extraordinary.

Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
December 2, 2018 at 8:23 AM
Last night about 11:30pm I was in bed waiting for the lights to go
out. Wife comes in as says there is a vehicle in our yard. I quickly
get dressed, grab a .45 and head out the door. I flip on the porch
light and garage lights. By the time I got out there they were at the
street attempting to pull out. They then pull out and then sort of
stopped in the road just past our main driveway. I could hear what
sounded like people yelling at each other I suppose. They then left.
Upon checking the area, they had rutted up the yard from our secondary
"driveway" that is over by the shop. By driveway it is an entrance
over the ditch but is just grass on our side. We had a big storm the
day before so the ground was very soft over there.

At first I thought maybe they were so morons who were trying to turn
around over there and maybe got stuck. The wife said it sounds like
teens but from what I heard I am not sure if they were teens or not.
The road out there is pitch black at night and I would think it would
have been very difficult to find this 2nd driveway of ours in the dark
unless you knew it was there. In fact it is not really all that
accessible because when the county comes by and plows the road, they
plow often cuts into this driveway on the road side causing a pretty
good size hump to get up in it. Wife thinks they had cased the place
before because otherwise how would they have been able to find that
driveway.

Whatever the vehicles was, I thought it was some sort of pickup with a
camper shell maybe, wife said it was a small SUV but in any case the
back glass was up on it the whole time. Nothing seems to have been
broken into or stolen as far as I can tell but I will be back out in a
little bit to check.

I have several cars parked over by the shop/barn awaiting okie
attention. I have noticed hood ornaments missing on cars in the past
but could never really remember if they were missing when the cars
were parked there or not. I need to go back and look at some old
photos of a couple of these cars because I am pretty sure they did
have the ornaments in place. I did not know this was still a thing to
steal them.

Anyway, when we first moved out here there was/is a street light on a
power pole out in the middle of the yard. With this on at night, I
can pretty much see what is going on out back and over toward the
barn/shop area from inside the house. This was one of those deals
that you paid $6 a month on your power bill for and it was maintained
by them. About 2-3 years ago I had the power company remove it from
my account and they were supposed to have a crew remove it, but they
never did. About 6-8 months ago I noticed the light getting dim till
now it just dimly glows and does not put off any light. I like it
because this is the country and I like it dark so I can see the stars
or what not. On the other hand I did like the light so I could keep
an eye on things. I have been meaning to install some motion activated
flood lights at various points around the properly, like a couple off
the shop, maybe one off the barn, some on the back of the house etc.
I am now wondering if I should just have the street light added back
to my account and have the power company replace it. I really hate
not being able to turn it off when I want.

I also need to install a deadbolt on the shop door. It currently just
has the handle lock. I have locked my keys in there before and I am
able to get the door open with a flathead screw driver in about 5
minutes or less so I am sure a thief could do the same. I guess this
is the project for today.

Screw it im going to HF to get 2-3 of them to try out. If they work good I may
get more.

I also need to replace the wall lights that are mounted on either side of the
garage on the front of the house. Debating on going motion on those or just the
ones that turn on at dusk.

Then I need to install a dead bolt on the shop which is going to require
drilling the holes for it. I do not currently own any hole saws so would have
to get that as well.

Re: [MBZ] Time for some security updates

2018-12-02 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I have cameras around my house. We’re not in an area where there’s any crime
to speak of, but our neighbors across the street have a rental that was vacant
for a few weeks and someone went poking around trying to break into it, so I
put some cameras up to make the wife happy. I used some really cheap DLink
IP/WiFi cameras I got for like $40/each. They email me any time there’s
activity in their area of vision, which isn’t often. They cover the driveway
and the front door, so I see when I’m getting deliveries.

I didn’t make any effort to disguise them, so if someone comes trolling around
they’ll know their on camera.

We had an incident a few months ago where a couple of urban folks went walking
around the neighborhood early in the morning trying car doors and stealing
stuff left inside of the unlocked cars. While I certainly don’t condone this
behavior, I don’t have a lot of sympathy for the people who leave their cars
unlocked outside or leave anything of value in them.

I was able to follow these fine folks as they walked up our drive and tried the
doors on the car in the driveway. They obviously saw the cameras (outdoor
lights were on as well) because they pulled their hoodies down over their
faces. You could see them walking up the street - one in the middle with a
large bag, no doubt holding their “take”, the other two walking down each side
of the street looking for cars to check.

I wish the 400E had been out there at the time. The passenger door alarm
switch was bad and if you pulled on the door handle the door would open and the
alarm would go off…

It's probably a good way to get your house burned down. A gate across that

No fuse in starter circuit that I'm aware of. IIRC, power goes from battery to
key switch, to neutral safety switch, to solenoid (for the start signal).
There may be another switch or relay in there, little voice is telling me that
I've forgotten something, but I'm sure there is no fuse.

Battery power high current connection (thick cable) goes directly from battery
to starter.

Ok so I finally get the new vacuum booster line and brake light switch (fyi
daytona MB is crushing on prices for OE) anyway and the r129 dual diaphragm
booster and 500e fronts and sl600 rear calipers on the knuckles right side
up and re bled with the pressure thingy today. Good news is it stops with
very little pedal effort now. Almost too little, but I will get used to it.

Anyway I drive down the steep driveway, and there is all kinds of water
running out of drains from the storm this week, because the car hasnt
moved. Anyway, park it across the street to check the mail, which isnt
there, get back in and no crank. Fiddle with the selector lever, no dice. I
guess the next step is to jump the starter at the terminal block and see if
it has any life. Then the neutral safety switch. Is there anything I am
missing? I wiggled all the fuses. The lights all come on the panel and dim
slightly when I turn it to start position, so I think the switch is ok, and
obviously it has juice from the batry. I was under there messing around, so
could have knocked something loose, but it started fine a few times in the
driveway before it didnt.

Thoughts?

Thanks

[MBZ] Time for some security updates

2018-12-02 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
Last night about 11:30pm I was in bed waiting for the lights to go out.
Wife comes in as says there is a vehicle in our yard.  I quickly get
dressed, grab a .45 and head out the door.  I flip on the porch light
and garage lights.  By the time I got out there they were at the street
attempting to pull out.  They then pull out and then sort of stopped in
the road just past our main driveway.  I could hear what sounded like
people yelling at each other I suppose.  They then left.  Upon checking
the area, they had rutted up the yard from our secondary "driveway" that
is over by the shop.  By driveway it is an entrance over the ditch but
is just grass on our side.  We had a big storm the day before so the
ground was very soft over there.

I have several cars parked over by the shop/barn awaiting okie
attention.  I have noticed hood ornaments missing on cars in the past
but could never really remember if they were missing when the cars were
parked there or not.  I need to go back and look at some old photos of a
couple of these cars because I am pretty sure they did have the
ornaments in place.  I did not know this was still a thing to steal them.

Anyway, when we first moved out here there was/is a street light on a
power pole out in the middle of the yard.  With this on at night, I can
pretty much see what is going on out back and over toward the barn/shop
area from inside the house.  This was one of those deals that you paid
$6 a month on your power bill for and it was maintained by them.  About
2-3 years ago I had the power company remove it from my account and they
were supposed to have a crew remove it, but they never did.  About 6-8
months ago I noticed the light getting dim till now it just dimly glows
and does not put off any light.  I like it because this is the country
and I like it dark so I can see the stars or what not.  On the other
hand I did like the light so I could keep an eye on things. I have been
meaning to install some motion activated flood lights at various points
around the properly, like a couple off the shop, maybe one off the barn,
some on the back of the house etc.  I am now wondering if I should just
have the street light added back to my account and have the power
company replace it.  I really hate not being able to turn it off when I
want.

I also need to install a deadbolt on the shop door.  It currently just
has the handle lock.  I have locked my keys in there before and I am
able to get the door open with a flathead screw driver in about 5
minutes or less so I am sure a thief could do the same.  I guess this is
the project for today.

Those starters often fail by locking up completely when energized, at least
that's what has happened to all of mine from that era.

If you hear the solenoid engage when you turn the key, the starter motor will
need to be replaced. Not a terrible job, just get a long breaker bar to get
the bolts loose.

Sounds legit to me. If memory serves, high-draw items like starters tend
to have fusible links rather than fuses. It sounds as though you're
getting power to the starter. I'm gonna go along with the bad starter/bad
connection theory. Have you tried to put 12VDC to the starter itself yet?
