[MBZ] Battle of Britain

2019-03-25 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
I’m watching it on Amazon Prime and it has some pretty cool old Benz Kraut
(Jerries) Krazy Kommand Kars and old Brit cars. I wonder what happened to them
after being used in the movie. Great flight sequences too and old planes.

Yea it’s the same one. I ran the carfax which told the tail. It looks about the
same except for the console taken apart for some reason. Carfax shows it had
from in damage 5 days ago. I am pretty sure it had over 200k on it when I sold
it to a guy in Arkansas. Guess it ended back up in OKC

I built many Heathkits but the two memorable ones were:
   1. Color TV (circa 1969). Couldn't afford a real (off the shelf ) color TV
back then on 2Lt pay.
   2. IBM PC clone (circa 1985). Real PCs were expensive then. Did most of my
PhD work on that box.

These days I can buy a new (or nearly new refurb) PC for a small fraction of
the cost of those old Heathkits. Great for me but recent generations of kids
never seem to get this kind of hands-on experience. I understand that many
schools even discontinued vocational classes. Sad.

Not necessarily.

Rather than look on the inside, look first on the outside. If you have
four times the power in the same physical package, you will have four
times the power (heat) flowing out of the same surface area, thus four
times the heat flux.

As Jim Cathey has said, this could cause performance problems with your
boiler. In addition, it could cause performance problems with the heating
tube itself, causing damage to the materials of which it is made. It all
depends upon how close to the "margin" the heating tube is designed.

Of course, you could always use a heating tube of the desired power
designed for 230 V on its design voltage (230 V).

Re: [MBZ] OT - Calrod heater element

2019-03-25 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
There is a maximum heat flux that you can pump into water per unit area, before
surface
steam would be generated which would dramatically cut down the heat flux and
result in
overheating and melting of the element. So, he's talking about putting in a
4kW element
in order to get 1kW out of it on reduced voltage. But it's going to be
physically sized to
deliver 4kW into unpressurized, non-flowing water, which means it will be
somewhat larger
than a 1kW element would need to be. I don't know how big that is. I'm just
digging
40-year-old information out of my brain from Heat Transfer class back in
college.
Information I have _never_ used since, and no way am I going to dig into my old
textbooks in order to get anything better than this off-the-cuff info.

I invite anyone who cares more to do their own digging.

Others have answered it. If you run a 230 V heater on 110 V, you will get
1/4 the power.

So a heater rated at 4 times the desired power on 230 V will give you the
desired power on 110 V. But it probably won't fit physically.

Yes, but they are brittle. I had some major trouble trying to drill out the
broken crank bolt on my boy's 240D, until I bought some Latrobe high Cobalt
bits. Big difference. Broken bolts tend to work harden at the point of the
break.

Carbide drills will do a much better job of cutting the high strength bolt
material.

Re: [MBZ] I want to loose my lug bolts -- well that is disappointing

2019-03-25 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I bought a small set of Cle-line drills a couple years ago, definitely the
most expensive drill bits I've ever bought but boy do they cut! I had to drill
out a bolt on the motor for my loader and it zipped right through. I have poor
luck drilling out bolts but I think its probably because I'd always had cheap
bits in the past. I bought these on AVE's recommendation...
Strangely Amazon doesn't list that I bought them there and I can't find any
email referencing them. I'm SURE I bought them from Amazon but I can't find
that set on  there and I can't find any hint that I might have bought them
someplace else. I'm tempted to go see if I still have 'em...

Carbide drills will do a much better job of cutting the high strength bolt

The first Heathkit I did was a shortwave receiver of some sort. I was probably
10-12 years old and my Dad bought it for me to assemble and then give to my
grandfather so he could listed to SW broadcasts from his native
Albania/Macedonia. After I assembled it we went over to my grandfather’s
house, set it up and strung an antenna for it.

I was amazed at the stuff it could pull in.

Hey Bob - did you build a Heathkit nuclear reactor?

Yup, I did a Heath FM tuner and a Dynaco power amp. The amp is still in service
at my brother's house. I also cobbled together a transistor radio and a crystal
radio at some point.

Me to - I still have the Knightkit VTVM and the Heath Tunnel Dipper (they
both work. Also built a stereo amp (HH Scott?) and FM tuner (Heathkit), a
CW transmitter from a circuit in the ARRL manual and scratch built an RF
amplifier (75 watts) with power supply that followed the transmitter. All
used tubes, the only solid state devices were diodes in the power supplies.

The thing that keeps gnawing at me are those oscilloscope clocks.
Some of those are pure works of art, and retro techno-cool. I've
thought of turning my (now) non-functional Tektronix 561A
into a clock, taking some kind of plug-in module and slipping
a microcontroller into some corner of it.

But having a dorm-fridge-sized clock that draws 200W 24x7
and has fans just doesn't sound that attractive in the end.

In short, no. You don't specify which way, but for a resistance heater
you'll either get 1/4 the power and tepid water, or else 4x the power
(briefly) and wet slag.
