Re: [MBZ] Opinions on Eastwood Cobra torch?

2020-07-21 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Apparently Eastwood bought out an earlier manufacturer. I first used the
original version over 45 years ago and bought it on the spot at a
manufacturers tent display at Oshkosh EAA flyin.
Owned and used it with all the deluxe attachments that came with it or were
available later. Absolutely loved it.
Would still have it except it was part of a $500,000 tool robbery where I
lost a lifetime of tools, Have not gotten around to replacing it... looks
like Eastwood will now be on my call list.

Very precise torch work possible with this system. Wonderful for thin gage
car body work. Not cheap, but good tools never are.

That's what the oil, grease, mold release agent is for - so the knob isn't
glued to the shaft and can be removed. It worked on the coffee grinder.

All the lobster you can eat…the Fox Islands. Yum!

Spooling up a stationary steam turbine if kept in the standby mode only takes a
few hours at most, and a lot of that is based on how much load you’re going to
expect out of it once it comes online. That is, they could easily maintain the
turbines in standby and spool them up as the sun goes down, load sharing as the
load gradually shifts from solar to steam. This is not rocket science by any
means.

Re: [MBZ] Dryer knob and shaft stripped

2020-07-21 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
I just had to do a similar repair on the wife's coffee grinder. I'd cut a
slot in the shaft, insert a small piece of metal that's wider than the
shaft creating wings that you can grab with the knob. Coat the shaft and
wings with oil, grease, or mold release. Cut slots for the wings in the
knob, fill it up with a good amount of Permatex Plastic Epoxy, and set it
in place. It will likely last longer than the rest of the dryer.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Thermal solar in Oz

2020-07-21 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
The boiling point of sodium is more than 1600F so the energy stored in the
liquid sodium would be enough to keep boiling water to make steam for a
substantial period even after the sun went down.I would assume (dangerous of
course) that the production of steam would be a 24 hour deal with the daytime
hours capturing more energy than could be used at that time to be used later
when the sun went down.
Its one of those interesting ideas that might be great in remote places where
small scale production is expensive. One of my Dad's friends just retired as
the electricity manager for the island of Vynalhaven. He told us that 20 years
ago they'd be shipping in 2500 gallons of diesel fuel every other day to supply
power for the island. Today that same shipment lasts them a week as most of
their daytime power is solar and wind with the diesel plant only supplementing.
The goal is to never burn diesel (or not much anyway) during the day and
ideally not a ton at night. The local electricity rates have come down
something like 60% since theres basically no maintenance on the solar.

I hot glue almonds to the bait pad on the trap. I'd formerly used white glue
but needed faster turn around on my traps. In the spring a trap might get 2-3
hits a day. Also skunks and mice can get the almonds either without triggering
the traps or while being missed although I do catch a number of mice also.
The other thing I learned was to screw the trap to a piece of 2x4 thats about 2
feet long. That way if I don't see a chipmunk in the trap before nightfall when
a skunk takes the body it doesn't take the trap away with it...

Are chipmunks more or less of a nuisance than squirrels?

WILDLIFE
More nuts mean more chipmunks wreaking havoc

Published: Monday, July 20, 2020

Chipmunks are on the rise in New England, fueled by a large crop of acorns
last fall. University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension

There were plenty of acorns this spring, and now the chipmunks are driving
people nuts.

Their frenetic activities can be entertaining. But this summer in New
England, the varmints are making a nuisance of themselves, darting to and
fro, digging holes in gardens, and tunneling under lawns.

Plentiful acorns last fall meant there was still plenty of food on the
ground when the chipmunks emerged from winter and got busy breeding this
spring, said Shevenell Webb, a small mammal biologist with the Maine
Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

The result is a bumper crop of the critters.

"They're cute. They're fun to watch in the forest as they duck in and out
of the holes and play peekaboo," Webb said. When their cheeks aren't
bulging with nuts, chipmunks make a distinctive "chip" sound, she said.

But they're also destructive. They can destroy lawns and gardens with their
burrowing, and can even get into homes, Webb said.

"We can't grow a tulip without them digging it up," Steven Parren, wildlife
diversity program manager for the Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife,
said of the chipmunks in his yard. "They don't even pause."

There were so many acorns in one of the areas that he monitors that the
rodents that rely on them couldn't stash them all away for the winter.
Plenty remained on the ground this spring. In addition to chipmunks, he
said, he's seeing more squirrels, rabbits and a variety of different kinds
of mice.

People needn't get too alarmed over an overpopulation. Small mammal
populations tend to explode, then crash and burn.

Such is life near the bottom of the food chain, where food supply ebbs and
flows and chipmunks are easy prey for owls, hawks, snakes, foxes and
raccoons. Even if their lives aren't cut short, individual chipmunks tend
to live only for three years, Webb said.

Many New Englanders recall a similar spike in squirrel populations in 2018
in New England. The boom-and-bust cycle was punctuated by a memorable
number of road kills.

"We've never seen anything like that. That was a once-in-a-lifetime event,"
Webb said. *— Associated Press*

[MBZ] Advances in Covid Research

2020-07-21 Thread archer75--- via Mercedes

The Oxford vaccine appears to have surpassed expectations

The Spectator, 20 July 2020, 12:09pm

Dr Waqar Rashid

It has been yet another busy medical day in our ‘new-normal’ coronavirus world.
Today, the Phase One results of the University of Oxford vaccine were
published, confirming positive reports tantalisingly leaked last week. Also
making the news is a press release from the pharmaceutical company Synairgen,
touting very positive initial results from its inhaled protein,
interferon-beta, in treating hospitalised patients with coronavirus.

In days gone by the publishing of results of a Phase One vaccine study would
barely generate a ripple, even in the relevant medical speciality. But of
course, this is no ordinary trial and we are truly in extraordinary times.

All medical products undergo a trial process, starting with studies which look
purely at safety (not efficacy). Many trials fail at this stage. You may recall
the disastrous Northwick Park study in 2006 which saw six healthy young people
develop multiple organ failure from exposure. Once this hurdle is passed then a
larger scale trial to look at efficacy is undertaken and if successful, a
licence is applied for and distribution follows.

Today, the preliminary findings for ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 (the Covid-19 vaccine)
appear to show that it has surpassed expectations. Firstly, the safety hurdle
seems to have been met, although 70 per cent of the 1,077 volunteers apparently
did report fever or headache. Secondly, and in line with the bullish press
releases last week, the vaccine garners both an antibody and T-cell response
which it is hoped may provide lasting immunity to the disease. This is vital as
studies have shown that patient antibody levels may fall after just three
months.

There are the usual caveats: the study was over a very small timeframe and was
not intended to show if it is a working vaccine, so we know little of its
long-term safety or effectiveness. Nevertheless, it is now full steam ahead for
the larger Phase Three study and the likely riches of being first on the market.

Make no mistake, a vaccine is the only game in town as far as the Department of
Health and the World Health Organisation see it. Despite the continued fall in
hospitalisations due to Covid-19 in the UK and the significant reduction in
deaths, a return to pre-March 2020 normal life seems a long way off. ‘Cases’
continue to rise in some areas and there is talk of local spikes and lockdowns.
Masks will soon be compulsory in shops (something that was not the case at the
peak of the epidemic) and of course we still await a possible ‘second wave’.
Boris Johnson on Saturday promised a return to ‘near-normality’ by Christmas,
but given that is bang in the middle of the respiratory virus season, this
would seem grossly optimistic. A ‘game-changer’ is needed to break the cycle of
cases and restriction.

There is actually a coherent argument to be made that cases (positive tests
without infection) matter little, as spread from this is at best rare and it
may also reflect a move towards community immunity which may allow us to live
with this virus. However, the government and scientific advisers have put all
their eggs in the vaccine basket.

The larger Phase Three trial for the Oxford vaccine is already recruiting in
Brazil, because there are not enough serious infections in the UK, and a
license and production deal has already been signed with AstraZeneca to supply
the UK with over 90 million vaccines from as early as September. A subsequent
mass vaccination programme would then likely follow. Suddenly the promised
Christmas normality would become possible. Hence, a working and safe vaccine is
fundamental to these ambitions.

As I mentioned previously, there is an almost unseemly worldwide race to be the
first to develop an effective and safe vaccine. Today’s results, combined with
the UK’s block purchasing already underway, confirms Oxford’s credentials as
the definite frontrunner.

Yet the other development of the day: the finding that an inhaled protein,
interferon-beta, may dramatically reduce severe Covid-19 lung disease and
hospitalisation, may also have a bearing. The preliminary study reported by its
pharmaceutical sponsor, Synairgen, from a modestly-sized 100 patient study at
the University of Southampton suggests (but no more than that) two very
important things.

Firstly, severe Covid cases may become much more treatable, which could have a
significant bearing on future fatalities if a so-called second wave does
emerge. Certainly, initial assumptions of treating the condition have now been
turned on its head with the dash for ventilators now replaced with stockpiling
of dexamethasone and possibly now interferon-beta.

Secondly, given both dexamethasone and interferon-beta are medications which
reduce or modify the immune system, this tells us is that it's immune
dysregulation as a result of the virus,

Yeah it's like these 210s (or even 163s) I have bought for $500 or $600
-- nice cars with some issues, nothing particularly challenging to fix
unless you are paying some jackleg mechanic to diagnose and throw parts
at it, in which case your costs will rapidly exceed the value of the car
because of the reputations and nobody wanting to fool with them.  So
these folks buy them figuring they are going to get a deal then some
nanny or $100 part craps out, they don't want to deal with it so the car
sits and goes to hell and becomes near-scrap.

I guess Merkun and Jap cars are easier to deal with, or more reliable or
something, or at least that is the perception.  It works to our
advantage if we want to fool with them.

Now that they are even older and harder to find they are becoming
valuable.

This particular example also has obvious collision repair. Half-assed

I'm impressed they are working to ensure it can operate around the clock.

That's what all responsible non-traditional sources should do, regardless

[MBZ] OT: Thermal solar in Oz

2020-07-21 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
RENEWABLE ENERGYRemote Outback town to host $420M solar thermal project

Published: Tuesday, July 21, 2020

An isolated Australian mining community has been selected as the site for a
A$600 million ($420 million) energy project, incorporating technology that
allows heat from the sun to be stored for as long as 16 hours.

Mount Isa in northern Queensland state is home to fewer than 20,000 people,
but is an important service hub for the region's silver, lead, zinc and
copper mining industry. Developer Vast Solar is targeting the business of
those resource operations with a cleaner, cheaper alternative to the
natural gas that currently powers the region.

"After the Atacama Desert, this is the second-best place on the planet to
build a solar thermal plant," said Craig Wood, Vast Solar chief executive
officer, citing the region's year-round hot, dry conditions.

The company's technology uses mirrors and receiving towers to gather and
store the sun's energy. Heat is transferred using liquid sodium, which the
company says offers improved control, higher efficiency and lower risk than
other solar thermal solutions.

The 50-megawatt Mount Isa plant will run on traditional solar power, backed
by battery storage and gas turbines, during the day, with the solar
thermal-generated power to be used at night to ensure it can operate around
the clock. It will provide enough electricity to supply a regional town in
Queensland, or a large resources project.

The facility is intended to complement the A$1.5 billion CopperString 2.0
project, which will connect the region to the national electricity network
via as much as 1,000 kilometers (621 miles) of new transmission line. Once
in place, the link would also open up a route to urban coastal markets for
the Mount Isa site and potentially even bigger solar thermal operations,
Wood said.

Vast Solar has run a successful pilot project at Jemalong in New South
Wales since 2018, but solar thermal has had a chequered history. Technical
issues beset early efforts to scale-up the technology in the U.S., while a
major project in South Australia collapsed last year after the developer
failed to secure financing.

Wood said that he hopes to reach financial close on the project around
mid-2021, and start construction on the two-year build shortly after. Wood
said that he was in talks with the government's Clean Energy Finance Corp.
and the Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility on potential funding,
and also expected interest from Australian commercial banks.

"On the equity side, we're already having conversations with a number of
parties from all round the world," Wood said. "There are people who realize
the need for dispatchable renewable energy that's low cost." *— James
Thornhill, Bloomberg*

2020-07-21 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes

Interesting commentary on MBZ dealership in the comments section. It's
your car, but we're borrowing/misappropriating it for a couple weeks so
you can't have it:

Worked for Con-Met, a division of Daimler, in 1985 when we were issued a
300E (automatic) for our general manager’s company car. He sent me on a
two hour trip to pick it up at Snyder’s Mercedes in Greenville SC. It was
a central office sale but sent to the dealer for prep and pick-up. It was
the very first one in SC and the dealer already had it on his showroom
when I arrived.

It was stunning under the showroom spot lights- light blue with palomino
interior. The sales manager refused to hand over the car. Conversation
expanded to the dealer’s GM who said he was keeping the car on his
showroom for two weeks until their first car would arrive. Conversation
expanded to MBNA headquarters with the order to release the car
immediately, which they did.

Cuomo took a trip to FL to donate no longer needed ventilators and PPE from
NYC. New Yorkers went through hell but somehow smashed the curve without
experiencing a resurgence (yet).

Cuomo is probably scared to death of NY vacationers bringing back the virus
from their FL vacations.

2020-07-21 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
There will be those who don’t believe or want to accept the
numbers/statistics/data no matter who provides it, which is a problem in and of
itself.

How can you quantify “recovered”? Off a ventilator? Discharged from the
hospital? What about those with milder cases or symptoms? How do you determine
they are recovered? Add to this the related issues some of these patients will
have for months if not years that will affect their health. If I get off a
ventilator and get discharged but suffer from some sort of related breathing
issues from the disease, have I recovered?

My point is not to challenge, but to show that much of this isn’t quantifiable
in a clear and direct manner, so it’s nearly impossible to do so. This is
unknown territory for everyone.

Re: [MBZ] Covid 19 Mystery

2020-07-21 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
It depends on who you ask I'm sure. I'd like to find a better listing for open
hospital capacity, thats really the measure for how well we've flattened the
curve and how much we can loosen restrictions.
I see references to it now and then but its dang hard to find a reliable
number. Well its hard to find really trustworthy numbers for anything I
suppose...

What makes this all confusing and more scary is they continue to report the
number of new cases daily but no the number that recovered that day. In most
cases it just about equals out from what I can tell thru the fog.

Re: [MBZ] OT: More acorns = more chipmunks

2020-07-21 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I've removed 13 chippies from the gene pool so far this year, 12 here at our
house and one at my parent's place. The vast majority of those have been
trapped, they're very hard to shoot being so small and naturally camouflaged.
I'm working on getting a new airgun. The one I have is a cheapo Wal-Mart
special. I'm debating between made in Turkey with a German barrel or made in
Germany for more money. I know standard wisdom is to pay up front but the
Turkish made guns have a good reputation.

Are chipmunks more or less of a nuisance than squirrels?

WILDLIFE
More nuts mean more chipmunks wreaking havoc
