I think the issue is that he's on the road now, and would like to know how
fast he's going and how much fuel he has while driving at night. He can fix
it when he gets home, but what does he do tonight?
I vote for a red led headlamp. I keep one in the airplane for night flying
- as the instrument lights in the 1957 Cessna are rudimentary at best.

Try twiddling the dimmer knob. Maybe oxidation is interrupting the

so you'll probably want it at or near max brightness.

Re: [MBZ] Instrument cluster Fuse?

2021-01-23 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
LED bulbs are a great upgrade for a 123. While you've got the dash pod out
line the light pipes with mylar or aluminum foil. Worst thing about the LEDs is
that they only go one way so you might have to pull the dash pod again and flip
'em around.

Don't fall for the xenon bulbs, they'll melt the light pipes, BTDT...

I mean, it *could* be a fuse, but more than the instrument lights would
not be working. Or, potentially, every bulb in the cluster is burned
out, but those bulbs tend to last a long time and odds are against that
scenario IMO.

[MBZ] New injectors

2021-01-23 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
I got four of the new injectors in the 88 TE today -- it was getting late, I'm
working outside, and the two in the center require some fiddling to get them in
(lines have to come off the fuel distributor).

Huge difference. Either the seals were so bad they all leaked horribly or the
injectors were badly worn and dripping at idle, resulting in a very rough idle
and stalling. Mixture was way off after I got them in, will have to re-check
tomorrow when I get the last two in.

Hopefully I will also eliminate the loss of fuel pressure overnight I've been
fighting, those worn dripping nozzles also tend not to seal with the engine
off, and leak down the accumulator into the intake.

Runs so nicely I may go ahead and do the work to get it into decent shape,
needs links in the back, new diff mounts, probably some wheel bearings, and a
new door liner on the left rear door, the hooks are broken off. Front end
needs alignment too, but I'll probably wait and get links in the back (and
probably subframe mounts) and do a four-wheel.

Love my Benz..

Re: [MBZ] Instrument cluster Fuse?

2021-01-23 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
Most certainly there is a fuse, but I think more things would not be
working if that fuse blows (parking/turn indicators, fuel gauge, IIRC).

Try twiddling the dimmer knob. Maybe oxidation is interrupting the
current flow. The instrument lights are not super bright to begin with,
so you'll probably want it at or near max brightness.

Re: [MBZ] Instrument cluster Fuse?

2021-01-23 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
That’s a feature.

It’s not a fuse, it’s a bad rheostat for the lighting. Turn the knob on the
rheostat for the instrument lights a little and they’ll most likely come on.

You bought a KlebCar. Let the fun begin.

[MBZ] fooling around with the $900E500 limp mode 722.9 trans

2021-01-23 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I ran the iCarsoft scanner on the car and found a whole load of codes,
mostly historic and Unhappy Nannies probably due to a dead battery at
some point.  The faults that were particularly relevant:

TCM

200A Current component Y3/8n4 fully integrated transmission control
(VGS) control module is defective

2111 Current The internal electrical check of component Y3/8y5 (B1 brake
control solenoid valve VGS) has failed

SBC

C2131 Current Pressure Reservoir Faulty

Suspension

Y54/1 Airmatic Valve Unit RR suspension strut Y54/1y Additional volume
valve open circuit

I cleared those codes and drove it and it was still stuck in 2nd.  Codes
for the brake, brake control solenoid (not the TCM itself, h) and
airmatic valve came back although the RR seems to be working OK.  I
guess, all the wheels seem to clunk noisily over the tree roots in my
driveway but the air suspension seems to work.

You can also watch various parameters on the scanner from the
transmission in real time as you drive, it was not showing the actual
gear (Target Gear, Actual Gear signal not present) and said it was
"Emergency Running."  So either the TCM is not reporting those
parameters or some connection(s) is bad.

Worst case the TCM/conductor plate assembly has fried.  Second case, not
so bad, is that the solenoid has failed (I'll need to figure out which
is which) and/or there is some kind of connector fault that is
preventing the nannies from communicating.  And I guess the easiest
would be a connector is not connecting, maybe internally.  Since there
is not an external TCM connecting to the trans, I am thinking that the
TCM has failed or is goobered up somehow.  I guess the thing do would be
to open it up, pull the conductor plate and check it out, clean it,
refill it, see if that helps anything.

A new conductor plate/TCM is spendy (like $900) and needs to be coded to
the vehicle (an anti-theft thing, wtf?)  but there appears to be some
chinee sources for a cloned assembly, or somehow they will do it.  A
used one *might* be reflashable, I have seen something about XENTRY
maybe being able to do that (and to a new one too); otherwise, the
stealer has to do it.

I am somewhat lucky that this trans is one of the first 722.9s has the
"VGS" and not a "VGS2" which apparently is more complicated and requires
a valve body change along with the conductor plate/TCM.  Lucky me!

Sorry - didn’t realize the mileage was goofy. Not sure where these get the
miles from - the ECU or cluster. Someone may have swapped the cluster?

I also noticed that the seat cover/upholstery on the passenger side front seat

Wife likes old movies, I like to spend time with wife. Pillow Talk happens to
be a favorite of hers. It’s also entertaining to see all sexual innuendoes
throughout the movie, especially since the male lead was gay (Rock Hudson). I

Re: [MBZ] Kaleb - Road Trip?

2021-01-23 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I wouldn't be too afraid of that -- the $500E300 had like 2 salvages on
it but it was put back together fine, even had a coupla parts left
over.  I could probably rebuild it again too with the front end damage
from hitting the tree but it's not really worth it.

Note from the auction comments that the car was wrecked, totaled, and

He said that the Michigan DMV gave him hell about trying to register an
airplane as a road vehicle! He had to go two layers up the supervisory
chain to get someone who could see that it's a truck chassis with the
fuselage sitting on top. Notice the radial engine cowling parts as front
fenders, etc.
Yes, it's a DC3.

Take a look at the fixture, can you drill a small hole in the middle and
mount a pullchain switch up in the box itself, and drop the string through
the light? Doesn't take a very big hole for just the string itself. Other
option is to mount a small pulley next to the light, and run the string
parallel to the ceiling from up in the box, and around the pullen and down.
Etc.

This is not a joke! We are regrettably selling our commercial airplane
fuselage which once operated under Midwest Transit, then was converted
into a flight attendant training center. This Dornier 328 offers many
opportunities including:

1. Convert to your own tiny house
2. Convert to a RV
3. COVID-19 free flying (all at home)
4. Endless other options
While there are many working components and mechanicals throughout the
plane, there are no working electronics.
Included in the sale is it's own dolly; capable of short distance
transportation. You won't be able to fly it home, but you can tow it
with a half ton pickup.
Fuselage in this condition have sold on Ebay and elsewhere for $20k+.
Get this before some other odd ball person swings by and scoops it up.

Feel free to come by and see it, dream about it, or just tour for the fun.
Due to the overwhelming interest and dozens of messages, please feel
free to stop by anytime 10:00 a.m. through 4:00 p.m. on Saturday or
Sunday, January 23 or 24.

My address is 16230 152nd avenue, Spring Lake
