If what I am seeing is correct the towing capacity if the 2007 ML is only 5k
lbs where the 08 and up is 7k. Why would it be different?

Hmm. There are military tensions building someplace in the world and that might
have a wee bit of something to do with it. Hopefully cooler heads prevail and
no issues arise.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Gray Market Cars

2022-01-21 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
That's a long article and for having the "25 year import rule" in the title
it's strange that it never explains what the rule is. It just wraps up with
"Decades later, the 25-year rule remains in place, and there’s no sign it’s
ever going anywhere."

Re: [MBZ] Another copart ML

2022-01-21 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
Seems like its better to find one that already has the hitch and
integrated wiring.  I know on the 08 the wiring harness is right up
under the drivers dash to hook up a brake controller.  I have heard on
the earlier ones the harness is all the way in the back and you have to
run it up to the front to hook up a brake controller.

Re: [MBZ] GL 642 starter

2022-01-21 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
Check them all, write the Amps down near the battery or measuring point, so
if you think they might be getting slow in the future, you have a reference
number. Hmmm - I did that for the airplane, I'll go and do it for the car
and truck tomorrow - take my own advice!

Re: [MBZ] GL 642 starter

2022-01-21 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
On my Volvo XC90 the battery is in the very back of the car, under the floor
just in front of the tailgate. Even with a brand new battery I think the
starter sounds slower than what I am used to in other cars. I think part of it
is that with only 12V and a 10 foot distance (maybe more, allowing for routing
of the cable) you're just going to have some losses unless your cabling is the
size of a garden hose.

It would basically be impossible.  The starter would have to be removed
and readjusted (pointed down) to get at the connections on the starter
to check or remove.  Battery is inside the car so I guess you could do

There are at least three high-current cables involved, and all
should be tested for voltage drop while starting:

Bat+ to starter
Bat- to frame
Frame to engine

You can do it with two tests:

Bat+ (center post) to bolt end on starter
Bat- (center post) to engine block

You'll almost certainly need more than one set
of hands to do these tests correctly. Hint: none
of the contacts you make with the meter should
be to any part of any cables in question.

You need a fast-reading meter, one that can track
voltage fluctuations well. An old-school analog
meter is ideal, but a Fluke (with its analog auxiliary
scale) will do.

If you're losing anywhere near a volt in any of the
cabling, that's way too much.

Re: [MBZ] Wheels

2022-01-21 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
Finally got to looking at this... as a reminder I already have a set of 18"
snow tires so I am looking for an extra set of wheels to mount those on, so I
can change them without having to have a tire shop involved.

According to that website, the OE wheels would be 7.5Jx18 ET49, center bore
67.1, bolt pattern 5x108.

The only vehicle that comes up for those parameters is the Volvo XC90,
2003--2014.

If I add some +/- to the offset and center bore I also get a Citroen. Not sure
how far I can reasonably deviate on those.

So as far as salvage wheels it looks like I don't have any other options.

Well you have a deposit on file so I would assume you lose your deposit
then the car goes back up for auction . I am still pissed I lost this
one.  This is a game I have been playing for the last month, came out
the winner in the last 4 auctions and some dude shows up out of the blue
wanting it real bad.  I guess it was not meant to be.

True. I sure did not need this at all but after I regretted selling that

[MBZ] GL 642 starter

2022-01-21 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
So you all recall I did some testing due to car turning over slow.  I
had figured it was time for a replacement starter but the 2 year old
battery tested bad, so I replaced it with a new AGM battery.  It seemed
to turn over faster the other day but still not as fast as I figure it
should.  Starter still drawing about 300 amps.  Yesterday the wife left
and it was probably around 20 outside.  She said it cycled thru 2
keyless go starts but timed out.  Took the button out and used key and
started it.  Earlier today with it around 30 outside, she left, and it
turned over very slowly with first cycle before timing out.  2nd cycle
it finally started.  I am thinking I am probably going to have to go
ahead with the starter replacement anyway.  As mentioned before, I can't
really even see it from above, or below while its on the lift. Looking
at the procedure in WIS it basically appears as if you have to get it up
on the lift, support engine with engine support fixture (which I don't
have), remove engine mount and engine mount arm?  This is going to be a
whore of a job.  Jono?

[MBZ] 211 tires -- this works out well, so far anyway

2022-01-21 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I ordered a pair of tires for the 05E320 wagon off Amazon, best price I
could find (same as El Mercado de Wal).  They will ship to a tire shop
for mounting, I found a place that will do them for $16 each, which
turns out to be right next to the campus where I am taking my welding
class.  So you can make an appointment when you buy the tires.  I did
that for right before my class, can drop the car off, walk over to
class, walk back and the tires should be done.  Waiting to hear back on
the appt.

I'm going to put the takeoffs on the front of the 04E500 as those tires
are completely shot, probably due to bad ball joints or control arms or
something.  The old rear tires on the wagon are not real bad but getting
worn, the fronts are fairly new, they will be better than what is on the
E500 now and will last until they wear out or I get the front end
sorted, whichever comes first.  I'll throw the wheels in the back of the
wagon and have them do the swap at the same time as the new ones get
mounted.  The E500 has a pretty new pair of Michelins on the back, same
size, so this should work out OK for now and give me a bit of peace of
mind driving it.

Re: [MBZ] Curt…Can’t Go Wrong?

2022-01-21 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
This.
A friend had a Jetta with the 1.8T gas engine and tried to stretch the timing
belt interval, at 5,000 miles over the belt snapped. Fortunately his didn't
damage the bottom end but it was top end rebuild time.

I find the auto-box makes these very boring to drive. Newer ones have a DSG
which I find irritating to drive. If you like it that car will have (I think)
the vernerable ALH (or AHU I forget) engine which is simple to work on and
should reliably make 50mpg with a manual trans. It *might* have the newer PD
engine, I can't remember the cut over. The PD engine is more powerful but
slightly less efficient.

With VWs it's crucial to change out the timing belt at or before the factory
specified mileage. Be sure that "diligent on maintenance" includes that, or
plan on doing it immediately if you buy the car.

Unless maintained well, yes they suck. And the dual mass flywheels. Also a PIA.

I’ll likely reach out to this dude and ask some questions
