Yeah aliexpress.  I bought some steering wheel switch covers for the
S550 but have not put them on yet.  Proper color, were like $3.50 for
the set.  I got a new headlight switch surround too but it was darker
than the color of the trim (but it was cheap!).  They probably have the
steering wheel switch covers for a 211.

Might not have been for this model, though. Interestingly, Mercedes sells these
switches as a set, not individually. Every other model I’ve had with the
steering wheel switches you could buy them separately.

I found the torx bit you recommended, and the flexible tube on the air intake

windows, as the car lived in NY, which doesn’t allow front windows to
be tinted. I didn’t think it would be that big of a deal until I was
driving it this morning around 8:30 and the sun was already heating up
my arm. Fuggedabout it!

On the E320:

Plastic trim surround on front seat - damaged by previous owner/wear
and tear, I presume. Also includes a new storage “door” on the lower
front of the seat, as the pivot is part of the surround piece.

New (spare) tire is at the tire place. I’ve got a valve for it (the
spare tire valve is unique and not a common valve) I’ve got to drop off
and they’ll mount the new tire.

New “zoom tubes” for the engine (plastic tubes from the radiator
support to the air cleaner.) Both were brittle and cracked and needed
replacement.

New air cleaner/MAF sealing ring on bottom of air cleaner. Important
part that turns to stone as it ages from engine heat.

Updated oil filler cap with the taller “handle” that makes it much
easier to turn. I retrofit these to all my cars (000 010 13 85 64) so I
can get the oil filler off without using a slip joint pliers.

New Bosch wiper blades. Can’t stomach $50/set my cost from the stealer.
There’s a limit to my willingness to buy OE parts I can get in the
aftermarket.

On the ML550:

New air cleaner/MAF seal. Really didn’t need one as someone has been
caring for the one on the car, but it never hurts to have a spare

New LED strip for the driver’s mirror turn signal. The lens is missing
from the one on the car, a pretty common occurrence.

New “puddle lamp” bulb for the driver’s side mirror. Gonna be in there,
might as well replace it.

New center console latch. Existing one has a broken hook.

Right hand “zoom tube” - original one is cracked.

Lever and retaining ring for lumbar adjustment on driver’s seat. Missing.

New left side telematics buttons for steering wheel. Originals have
worn off icons.

New lower steering wheel spoke trim. Originals are cracked and the
“chrome” is peeling.

Emergency response QR code label - these are $0.15 and I make sure
they’re on every one of my cars. They go on the inside of the gas
filler door and allow EMTs to scan to get diagrams of where to cut the
vehicle open for extractions as well as the locations of fuel tank and
batteries. Mercedes makes them for everything from the W210 up. They
used to be free for the asking...

Screwdriver bit 126 589 00 10 00 - the #27 Torx driver used to unscrew
the screws that secure the airbag. It fits all airbag-equipped cars and
makes it a lot easier than using a regular Torx driver. Been meaning to
buy one of these for a long time…

I’ve got the new spare tire and wheel coming in, but they’ve got to
mount the tire and that won’t happen until Wednesday of next week. I’m
sure I’ll need some additional items by then.

On top of all this I’ve got some detailing supplies coming in for
refreshing the black plastic trim on the ML550.

Now if someone will only come and buy the SL500!

Yup, big sheet of cardboard.

In the time we ran it I could detect no leaks. Fortunately it's pretty easy to
see from the front. I haven't been back to look at it, maybe tomorrow...

Dan -- you mentioned replacing the steering wheel buttons, having trouble
finding these on the dealer part sites. Looking mostly to see what they cost,
on the E500 they have the icons rubbed (mostly) off and if the switches (or
ideally just the covers) are cheap enough I might replace them.

I found the torx bit you recommended, and the flexible tube on the air intake
that I need (right-hand one is cracked). Also threw in an air mass sensor
gasket (112-159-01-80-64, is that it?) since it's cheap.

This is what you need:

[46149_zzz_500.jpg]
6.25 gallon Oil
Extractor
harborfreight.com

I have one at each house. Works great, takes minimal space, holds 6 gallons of
fluid. Not cheap, but if you play the coupon game you can get a good deal on
it. Air requirements are minimal, too, my little 2 gallon Campbell-Hausefield
“sausage” compressor at the FL house has no trouble getting it to pull a vacuum
in short order.

I always find it difficult to get the filter housing back into place.
The opening does not allow much room so you have to mostly work by feel.
If the car was on a hoist, it likely would be an easy task but on the

don't get a whole lot of practice.

It will work if it seals to the top of the dipstick tube.

But only if the dipstick tube goes to the bottom of the oilpan, which I
think it does on at least some of the Mercedes engines.

With technology what it is, in the future if you get a "do not drive" recall,
the vehicle will be remotely disabled.

Reminds me of why I am a bit of a Luddite.

On either of these recalls. What is the sunroof is not delaminated now and they
compete the recall, but on 2 years it is? Same with the booster. What if it’s
not rusted now but is down the road?

[MBZ] OT: Pisten Bully update

2023-02-08 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I don't remember where I left you guys on the Pisten Bully saga. I pulled the
oil plan on Jan 28. We sent it out to be welded which was done last Friday. The
guy said it was terrible to weld, lots of oil in the metal. It's probably a
strange aluminum alloy too which doesn't help. He baked it for like 2 days and
finally just plated on the inside of the break and epoxied over all the weld.
It looks terrible but I suspect it'll be strong.

So last Sunday (Feb 4) we put the pan back in. The process was pretty simple. I
bought the spray cheese type Super Black RTV 1 minute gasket maker. It's
supposed to have a 5 minute working time but at 40F ambient it takes a bit
longer. That worked a treat and was way easier to apply than the tube stuff
would have been. I also spent a bunch of time cleaning the mating surface on
the engine.

Amazingly the machine popped and fired immediately but didn't want to stay
running. I think that was mostly due to thick fuel, it got down to -16F Friday
night with a daytime high of 12F Saturday. The air temp was a lot warmer Sunday
but I bet it took awhile for that fuel to warm up.

Ben reported we still didn't have any oil pressure and so we farted around
assuring ourselves we did. The oil filter on that machine has a bleeder bolt on
top so we loosened that and it POPPED oil out so we definitely had pressure.
Turns out buddy Ben was looking at them temp gauge.

Finally got it running good and I think it's actually a little quieter before,
a good oil change will do that...

Ran it for a good hour under load and Ben reports that it runs about the same
as it did before. 2.5 bar oil pressure at hot idle which to me says we dodged
the bullet and didn't do any serious damage.

Anyway, time will tell. We'll run it some more and do an oil change, I bet some
schmoo has moved into the filter...

Re: [MBZ] Oil sucker

2023-02-08 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
yeah on the Benzes the tube goes all the way to the bottom of the pan,
so it will suck out everything.  I have a 3/8" (?? I think) plastic tube
that fits in tightly, and the other end goes to a barb fitting on a
refrigerant tank, I drilled a hole in it that a small vac hose fits
into.  Heat up the engine to get the oil thinned out then turn on the
vac and go have a beer or do something else.

Most probably do, but even the MB dealer sucks from the top of the dipstick
tube.
It's that reliable. Not, however, on the W114/W115, which pre-dates this

Yeah, I can never remember to pop the hood and pull the piece of tape off the
booster to look for corrosion. It’s the joint between the halves of the
booster, where under some circumstances moisture could collect and cause it to
rust. It’s covered by a piece of tape that they pull off to do a visual
inspection. If they see rust they consider the car VOR (vehicle off road).

The sunroof recall on W211s is for delaminating of the glass. If they see it
they replace the sunroof.

VW TDI engines are rated for 10,000mi OCI in the USA and 30,000 (or presumably
whatever that is in Km) in Europe. Mobil doesn't have a VW rated oil though.
Supposedly the difference is because VW figured no Americans will ever read the
manual...

IIRC the Mobil literature says "Up to 20,000 mi". If supported by oil analysis
I don't see a reason you couldn't do it.
