In 1989, it was a SBC, not even a LT-1.
For the last 25 years or so the new ones have been LS series, and a
great improvement, with the exception of the cylinder deactivation
models and bad valve trains.

But, if I had a 1989 Chevy, would I just throw a junkyard 350 in it, or
would I computerize it and upgrade to an LS something with a modern
transmission?
I'm thinking that even at 60% of the MPG the 350 is the economical
choice.

Vice Grip garage hilariously dropped a Hemi 5.7l into a square body Chevy.
Apparently there is a kit.

I think the Hemi 5.7 is a better engine than the 5.3 ls. It certainly makes
more horse power and torque in stock form.

Re: [MBZ] 617 oil pan gasket

2024-07-22 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I replaced the pan gasket on my 1952 Farmall Super M last summer. That uses a
nice thick cork gasket which will take up a lot of slop but the pan had been
bashed into something, or possibly several somethings, causing the mating
surface to not be even close to flat.

I spent about an hour laying the pan on a (mostly) flat surface and
prying/bashing on it to get it as flat as possible. Then I used a thin coating
of RTV to glue the gasket to the pan. When that had mostly setup before I added
another thin coat of RTV to the engine side of the gasket and hoisted it into
position for the install.

The machine still marks its territory but where I had previously been adding
about a quart of makeup oil every time I used the machine it now needs maybe a
pint every other year.

I would expect a 617 pan to be able to tolerate some straightening...

Re: [MBZ] CrowdStrike

2024-07-19 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Oh yeah, Crowdstrike have just about admitted that they screwed up, they've
already released a patch.

I just now realized that I have a bunch of actual systems in a lab that I need
for next week's class which I can't access. There is one I NEED to the point
where I cannot run class without it. I've actually got 2 because they're so
critical. Guess which systems in my lab our IT group decided would REQUIRE
Crowdstrike?

5 other systems I can reach are fine, the 2 I can't live without are not fine.
They are physically attached to some hardware I need which is why there are
only 2 of them.

Next week's class is 8pm-1am, I'm going to go up to the northern estate so I
can day sleep without my wife being around. Guess I need to run to the office
(90 minutes one way) before I go...

I run 3 VM machines for every student for every class. This week there are 5
students plus me, so 18 VMs. We're required to have Crowdstrike on everything
bt I built the template that these VMs copy from all the way back in 2021
using an old version of Crowdstrike which apparently can't update itself.

Guess whos VMs are up and working right now so students can take their exam?
Laziness (and failure to update) for the win...
Yeah they're more likely to get compromised but they'll automatically be
deleted at the end of the day today anyway.

As I understand it, there was an update or patch that borked everything. It’s
got to be fixed from the command line, meaning that you can't just push out a
fix and hope it works.

Back in the day when I did desktop support we referred to this process as

I’ve had a few exchanges with the Crowdstrike admin at my former place, and
needless to say, he’s cancelled all of his weekend plans.

Wow, I do not miss this. At all.

This is the 3.0 liter v6 diesel, not a v8.

I haven't heard anything about the Duramax v6 good, bad or indifferent. I have
heard bad things about the RAM v6 diesels eating themselves. There are theories
that the DPF regens too often and causes issues.

One thing I don't like is that the timing belt is on the back of the engine
under the bellhousing. So to replace the timing belt either the engine or the
transmission/transfer case has to come out. The Duramax apologists tell you
"Well, its only got to be done once every 120,000 miles" sure, great but its a
major service for thousands of dollars

Re: [MBZ] Limp Mode

2024-07-09 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
VW has this weird "shadow limp mode" where it goes into limp but doesn't
trigger the check engine light.

Mostly on our (diesel) cars it happens when the fuel filter gets restrictive. I
*think* I remember it happening once for the air filter but I'm not so sure...

Usually when it happens I can restart and have it run normally until the first
time I give it the beans. At low power usage it's usually okay.

Some unique parts to these, specifically the quarter windows as previously

forbid you have to get parts for them or work on the regulators. Almost on the

Solid example from the pictures, but not $17k or even $10k solid. If he paid

Re: [MBZ] W211 PS fluid

IIRC the rule of thumb is that if its got a serpentine belt it uses PS fluid,
if its a v belt its ATF.

I put ATF into the PS pump on my '85 190D (serpentine belt) and it leaked it
all out. Not sure if it was already leaking or the ATF ruined it...

Re: [MBZ] Diesel Cadillacs

2024-06-28 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I was under the impression that GM got it figured out by '82 or so but the
damage was already done.

That said, even if they "figured it out" reliability wise they never did make
as much power as they should have. If a 3l OM617 can make 120hp the 5.7l v8
diesel ought to have made in the 150-160hp range, instead it was more like
100...

Where do you get it?
The ad is funny in mentioning its good for high sulfur fuel. AFAIK that's super
illegal in the US...

I like M1 TDT because its easily available. Which is what really annoys me
about the 2015 Jetta which requires oil that meets VW's spec.

I think I've mentioned that I had been using LiquiMoly 4100 in Angie's Golf but
the price has gone up 50% to nearly $50/gallon. Last oil change I switched to
Rotella T6 because it was on sale at Tractor Supply for $25/gal. The VW
community says it'll meet the standard for that car although its not listed.
Lots of people using it over 100,000 miles.

It's not great for cold starts, admittedly. But I don't like to drive my W116

Re: [MBZ] MB heads, advise please

2024-06-27 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
If you live somewhere that it gets cold at all and you want the dang thing to
start when its cold out Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel truck, 5w40 is the way to go. With
conventional 15w40 I never could get a W123 to start much below about 10F. With
TDT I got my '83 240D to start at -10F which was important to me at the time.

A block heater removes that issue pretty much entirely as long as you can plug
it in.

IIRC the limiting factor for oil change interval (OCI) on a 617 is the soot
loading which (again) IIRC limited you to something like 5,000 miles. You'd
want real oil analysis to know for sure.

The only conventional oil I stock anymore is 15w40 to put in my '52 Farmall
Super M. It uses 2 gallons of the stuff and for the limited amount it runs
every year conventional oil is just fine. Everything else from the lawnmowers
to the pickup (diesel tractor, 2 diesel VWs, pressure washer, generator, etc)
gets synthetic. The cars at 10,000 miles as spec'd by VW, the pickup is about
the same based on the oil change indicator in the truck's computer.

Re: [MBZ] 300D 2.5 Turbo injector nailing?

2024-06-27 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I did the delivery valve seals on my '84 190D and IIRC the injection pump
seemed louder after doing the job than before. Also as I remember (and it's
been probably 10+ years) that noise declined over time.

I'd throw a bottle of motor oil or ATF into the fuel tank and run the car a
little to see what happens. I wonder if maybe the leaking delivery valves get
quieter because of some looseness and the tightening of them makes them louder.

Almost 20 years ago I paid a "trusted mechanic" to replace dv seals on my '85
190D. At some point he shifted one of the valves which then caused the engine
to try to run away. He had to bring in a specialist to get it right again. I
ended up paying him something like $1000 on a like $200 job. That's why I did
it myself on the '84 190D. Its not a hard job, but you need to go slow and keep
your wits about you...

That was when I decided "Why pay somebody to screw up something I can screw up
perfectly well myself?"

Re: [MBZ] MB parts cyber attack

2024-06-22 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
My favorite ransomware story comes from a customer who works for a big
university. Apparently some student was looking at some website they shouldn't
have been (IT screw up) while connected to our (broadcast IT, different group)
storage system. The cool thing about our system is that our server never really
sees your files as files. So the ransomware locks up all of the student's files
"Pay us money or else". Fortunately the administrator of the system has been
through class with me. Student has read/write access to his own data but only
read access to anybody else's data. The administrator deletes the student
workspace, and re-images the workstation. Problem solved, at least for the
university.

Student complains "Where is my data? I'll sue."

"Oh, about that. We'd like to talk about the repercussions of your allowing
ransomware inside of our system..."

The usual ransomware flow is that they break into your systems, and then encrypt
every file they can find.  Pay them and they'll give you the key...

That model works, sort of, for businesses about as sophisticated as a sports
card shop, where the trickiest thing there might be a large spreadsheet.
How well do you think an _active_ database tolerates finding its files
(slowly) being encrypted underneath it?  Know any larger businesses
that don't need a real database?

Take a carton of eggs, put it in a locking box, drag it behind your car a few
miles.
The key... it's not really going to do you much good.

Put it another way, you're going to TRUST these people?  In their integrity
and their ability?  We don't.  No part of our policy for handling these
scenarios
involves paying ransom.  We have defenses, in depth.  I hope we never need 'em.
An attacked system will never be trusted until it has been erased and redeployed
from scratch.  Offline, offsite backups are involved.  There WILL be data loss,
but at a manageable level.

Were I in charge of one of these companies, I might be tempted to offer the
ransom amount to the bounty hunter world instead.  "Will no one find me
this turbulent priest?"  Perhaps that might slow their roll.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Stupid nickle and dime stuff

2024-06-10 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
That's what gave me the idea that the speedo is off, then yesterday driving RT
1 other cars normally max out at 60mph but most of the time the cars I was
following were doing 65 indicated in my car.

It occurs to me I should have paid more attention to the mile markers on the
highway. If the mileage is reading high it should show up in the car thinking
its traveled farther than it actually has. Probably wouldn't show up over 1
mile but should over 10 or 100...

I'm going to try a GPS speedo via my phone on the way home. I *think* I can
adjust the speedo within the VW software, need to try it when I get home.

I got into the habit of using a GPS receiver as a speedometer -- makes it
easy to see the speedometer and odometer errors.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Stupid nickle and dime stuff

2024-06-10 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I forgot to mention the positive effects of the long term high speed run. While
I haven't started the car yet today (ie cold start) when I stopped for
groceries I noticed a significant reduction in smoke at startup.
The PD engines in the second gen TDIs (first gen would be '97 through '03 VE
engines, third gen is the common rail like my 2015) are notorious for a little
puff of smoke on cold start. This car had gotten so it was making a little
cloud of smoke on cold starts and sometimes smoking for a mile or three down
the road. I *think* it had a dribbly injector (sounds like a personal problem,
HA!) which I'm hoping has cleaned up after a good hard run. If not I'll feed it
a little Diesel Kleen before the run home.

The '05 Golf ate the miles up yesterday, we did Peterborough, NH to Waterville,
ME in one 200+ mile run. I *think* the speedo reads 5mph slow which might
explain the 45mpg. Some of that is no doubt the around town driving I'd been
doing though.
My bladder limited us to Houlton for our next top, only 170 miles,
disappointing ;) Most of that was at 85mph indicated.
7 hours flat from Peterborough  to Caribou, Google says 430 miles, they say
6:30 but I think that'd be a tough number to hit...

I got diesel for $3.79 in Waterville. Didn't really need it but it was the
cheapest I'd seen to that point. On the way back I'll stop in Clinton, it was
$3.75 when I cruised through.

Oh geez,

Years ago Angie and I went on a cruise where the main dining room was
Versailles. We met a couple of former army officers who were trying to tell us
that they had eaten there but clearly didn't know how to pronounce it. "Ver,
ver, Versales."

They'd also told us how they were staying in the president's suite and how
they'd spent big money on it. So I somehow slipped into full sarcasm mode "You
mean Versailles? Like the treaty that ended World War 1? It was in all the
papers."

[MBZ] OT: Stupid nickle and dime stuff

2024-06-08 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Angie's '05 Golf has, I think, become my '05 Golf and she's taken over my '15
Jetta.

Back about March the alternator quit, there are a stack of choices, I ended up
going with a used one. It was slightly cheaper than a "new" made in China off
brand or "rebuilt" Bosch. New Bosch is available but $450...

The ABS light has been on and off, I knew I'd whacked one of the rear sensors
doing brakes. Fortunately replacements are cheap cheap. Unfortunately after 19
years they have to come out in little pieces. VW uses an irritating array of
torx and allen head fasteners. This one is allen head. I'd replaced the
passenger side rear, the one I smacked, in April. I did the other one
yesterday. Its a lot easier the second time. I even thought to use the dremel
with a drum sander to clean the hole, its not ideal because its covered by the
hub but not too bad.

It was also due for a timing belt back in April, 80,000 miles in almost 10
years.

That got us past safety inspection today so I also changed the oil. I put in
Rotella T6 5w40. I had been using Liquimoly 4100 but that stuff is running
nearly $50 for 5 quarts. I got T6 on sale at Tractor Supply for $25/gal. It
isn't registered for VW 505.01 that they specify but lots of people in the TDI
community have been using it long term. Shell claims they just haven't bothered
to submit it for VW's testing. We'll see, I'd hate to ruin the engine but, on
the other hand, its almost 20 years old with 230,000 miles...

Tomorrow I'm going to take it to the great northern estate. The car smokes more
on startup than I'd like, a 450 mile highway run ought to clean the cobwebs out
of it.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Giant venomous flying spiders will not parachute into New Jersey this summer

2024-06-07 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Sounds overcooked. Wild goose is red meat and should be treated as such, never
to be cooked beyond 150F, ideally 145...

I usually pound 'em out to get them more tender, lightly season with a rub like
my favorite Dinosaur BBQ rub, then brown in a cast iron pan on the stove and
into the oven for 4-6 minutes. We do a similar cooking style (without the
pounding) for venison backstrap.

The legs and wings go into the slow cooker for a MINIMUM of 8 hours of
braising. Comes out just like pulled pork.

Bird hearts are a treat not to be missed. I hate thinking about how many we
threw away before I decided to try them. Sliced into about 1/4" thick rounds,
fry in a hot cast iron pan with some BBQ rub, they're so good. I did one from a
turkey a few months ago, so good.

I sure haven't seen that in a long time.

Interestingly around the great northern estate diesel has held steady around
$3.99 from April into June. In in north central MA we're averaging more like
$4.09 with a big spread from $3.99 to $4.49.

I may be headed back north this weekend, my class next week starts at 5am. I'm
thinking to take my 2015 Jetta TDI with its 49mpg @ 95mph vs the 24mpg @ 70mph

I've got a 20something gallon HF compressor, had it 5 or 6 years now. Super
handy but also super loud. Not a problem in my situation but I see now they've
got much quieter options. Mine might go live on the great northern estate and
get a quiet one for here.
The only complaint I have is that it's hard to start in the cold. It doesn't
have a proper unload valve to isolate the compressor from the tank at startup.
A relatively minor complaint though.

1.) “Detention” ponds, as our former developer called them (and I regualrly

almost always see signs stating no trespassing/fishing, etc. It’s not about
being a d*ck with these, they almost always contain some less than pleasant
residents, like alligators, which will gladly come out and consider you for
their next meal. Really. So as a lawyer, Randy can appreciate the risk exposure
in a situation like this.

2.) As with those old dudes that yell at the kids when they walk on their lawn,
often times gaining access to these water features involves walking through or
across someone’s yard. Say what you want, but it’s trespassing. We had an issue
with this in a former home where we backed onto a wooded area with a detention
pond in it that was popular with the local kids, and we had no fence in the
backyard like our neighbors, so the neighborhood kids would cut through our
yard to get to it. That wasn’t a problem for us, but when people from outside
the neighbohood started showing up, parking on the street, leaving trash and
making a lot of noise with boom boxes and such, we put a stop to it. Not sure
what drove the sudden interest in the place by outsiders, but we didn’t mind
the neighborhood kids walking through as they were respectful and didn’t make
messes or noise.

3.) The first incident the writer references would be typical in our former
neighborhood. Someone would go out and let the people know it wasn’t cool to do
this, and they would leave. No biggie.

4.) The second incident, with the guy wielding the knife, is a random psycho
event and not unusual for Florida as there seems to be a lot of bizarre folks
in Florida, especially in more rural areas (which this used to be.) Starkey
Ranch is a HUGE area that’s literally thousands of acres of single family home
development, so statistically speaking, there’s bound to be some off-kilter
folks there.

With the recent changes in concealed carry laws in Floriduh I would be more
concerned about someone who is carrying. I can outrun a guy with a knife.

Re: [MBZ] Great, All Original

I don't have a handle on how big those cars are. Are they about the same size
as a 123?

I feel like the 1.9l VW TDI is an excellent modern diesel to transplant. Its
smaller, lighter, and with minor mods more powerful than a stock 617 turbo.

They also start a heck of a lot better when cold...

You don't lose it, you're just not using it right now. You can charge to 100%
whenever you want.
Lets be honest though, everybody knows the stated range is a lie. Just like
stated horsepower on gas engines is a lie...

The same is true for your phone BTW. If you charge your phone to 100% every
night the battery won't last as long. My current Motorola will generally go 2
days on one charge and I let it do so. If it runs short during the day I charge
it however much I have time for right this moment.

Time will tell if it helps or not...

Exactly.  I have nothing against electric cars.  I am hugely opposed to the fad,
and the ill-considered legislative me-too that's going on.

Something like a used Tesla would work very well as a member of our household,
except that they're outrageously priced.  I hate video games with wheels, and my
wife hates parking outdoors, but somehow I suspect we'd both manage to adapt.
Reality will not be denied.

Ideal one would be older, with the 'lifetime' free charging.  And we'd have to
arrange
to mostly _not_ charge at home in order to take advantage of it, cheapskate
that I am.

Not that we're looking.

Is there no tuner community for MB?

In the VW world I can contact Malone and have the "tune out" the immobilizer
for my car if I so desire. This is done mostly to allow transplanting the
engine into a non-VW chassis like putting a TDI in a Jeep, but AFAIK can be
done for any VW.
I can also buy aftermarket keys for VWs, for most years anyway, that can pretty
easily be coded to my car with a cheap USB cable.

I'm surprised how little aftermarket support there is for MB.

My buddy had some little box that could read the RF signal from a later Benz

think later cars like the keyless go versions are just a RF code that can be
copied and written. He said he could make them for me if I got the virgin
blanks. Once flashed the fob can’t be reused. He made me a new key for the
R500, those blanks are like $10. I found the keyless go blank for $40 or $50
from some vendor, he said they were on eBay and Amazon too but I searched and
it wasn’t clear what was what.

He told me that basically if the key is close to the cloning device the key can
be copied which has all kinds of issues with theft etc. so if he would be
sitting next to someone who has a key in pocket or purse he could clone the key
in just a couple minutes. Scary huh?

I've used it, "autopilot" is a really stupid name, you're right, adaptive

I drove in Burbank, CA, heavy Saturday afternoon traffic on the 5 freeway,

We've got the regular charger but I think only small-ish batteries. The picture
I had posted isn't clear, that might be the small battery too. I think the
small one we have is 2ah, the "big" one is maybe 4. I'd like a 5, the 4 cuts
out just short of when I'm tired.

The charge time on the standard charger isn't too bad, an hour maybe? Time to
have a cuppa and relax a bit. The battery will cut a whole loader load of wood.
So I haul it back and charge my batteries while charging the saw. Or, if I'm
feeling really froggy, split the load...

Re: [MBZ] Electric Vehicles

2024-05-08 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Grant, point 3 is wrong, there are giant battery shredders that automatically
separate batteries into their separate components. They do it inside of a magic
fluid so the lithium doesn't catch fire as would like to do.

I feel like a lot of the arguments against electric cars are "humans are too
stupid to make this work." which ignores our ability to make all sorts of stuff
work. 120 years ago all the brightest minds of the age said that gas fired cars
were idiotic, why pay for gas when you could get a horse? Besides which you'd
need to get gasoline somewhere, grass was everywhere...

Now that I think of it just about every argument against electric cars now
reflects a similar argument against gas powered vehicles in the time of the
horse. The largest being "Electric cars can't replace gas powered cars in every
way." well no duh, and they don't need to. A 200 mile capacity electric car
will replace 80-90% of most people's needs. All of us have multiple cars, it'd
be just a matter of choosing the other one on a day when the electric car
doesn't meet your needs.

I had to look up the Bolt, interestingly it was to be discontinued at the end
of 2023 and then strangely met its sales goals so they've un-discontinued it
and claim it'll keep going into 2025 at least.

If I were going to get an EV its the one I'd look for, starting price $27k,
listed range 259 miles which we can assume is more like 250. This is not an
"around the town car" like people seem to assume. Its small, sure but that's
what I want in a commuter car. People bitch about putting in a charging port
but ignore what it would cost to install a gas station...

GM screwed the pooch naming the hybrid the "Volt" and saving "Bolt" for the EV.
I hope whoever made that decision got sacked, they truely are an idiot.

Current battery technology, while much improved over the old lead/acid "golf

The car you are describing sounds somthing like a Nissan Leaf, Chevy Bolt, or
Ford Focus EV (I think the Bolt is in limbo and Ford don't make the Focus EV
anymore). They are smaller, and lighter, but as a result they have a driving
range that is unsuitable for anything but daily local use. Most people want
more than that if they are spending multiple 10s of thousands on a new car.

Charging is another issue, even if the energy density and weight issues are
solved you are just not going to be able to pump that much power through a
standard 15A wall socket in your garage. So you need to have a charging system
installed, and possibly a service upgrade to your house, which adds thousands
more dollars. Or rely on commercial rapid charging stations but those degrade
the battery quicker.

Then there are the batteries, they have a limited lifespan, are not easy to
replace, expensive to replace, don't perform well in very hot or very cold
weather, etc.

There are just so many unsolved problems. Though I like the idea of such a car,
the reality is that we can't make them yet.

We do an awful lot of trimming but the trees are alive and I'd like to keep
them that way. The value of the lumber goes down if they're damaged. The
electric saw makes it easy to take limbs off right up to the trunk...

Re: [MBZ] OT - Looking for a Chainsaw?

2024-05-07 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
The trick to keeping a 2 stroke engine running is the canned gas from the
hardware store, it lasts indefinitely, doesn't gum up in the carb.

I need to break out the brush cutter (think string trimmer with a metal blade)
to clear some trails on the great northern estate. Last year I burned a whole
gallon of gas through it which at $25/gallon for the canned gas is expensive
but I've wasted an awful lot of mix gas that's gone bad from sitting. I've also
wasted a bunch of time and effort cleaning carbs from dirty gas.

This year I plan to mix one gallon of pump gas, I'll use that for most of the
day but the last refill each day will be canned gas just in case I end up
leaving it...

that. I don't think there's a whole lot of difference in the saws.

Yes, not fooling with carbs every spring, mixing two-stroke oil and gas, trying
to get it to start and stay running -- so nice.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Looking for a Chainsaw?

2024-05-07 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Honestly I'd suggest Harbor Freight. I've got the cheapo Bauer trimming saw
that punches way above its weight: https://photos.app.goo.gl/p62DUZYds2BFJ7cp8

Its been the primary firewood getter at camp for the last couple years. I've
fallen behind so this year I'll break out my Husky and do some serious cutting.

The only let down on the Bauer is the chain tensioning mechanism, it doesn't
stay tight reliably. If I bought another I'd go for the Atlas which has a more
conventional system that requires a tool. The Atlas is a bigger, more powerful
saw anyway.

Otherwise since I'm already in the Makita ecosystem I'd go Makita, I've been
very happy with their stuff.

Stihl isn't actually highly rated for their electrics, or wasn't a few years
ago when I last looked into it. They know how to make a saw but they don't
really know electric. Chainsaws are pretty well worked out, the electric drive
is the more difficult part...

My buddy that firewood seller gave up on Stihl after he had to have his big saw
rebuilt for the I don't remember how many times. He got a red saw but I can't
remember the brand. He seems happy with it...

I've got Husky 445, good homeowner saw. The charge air system means it really
doesn't smoke. The plastic bottom end of the saw keeps it light. I did upgrade
to a semi-chisel chain which made all the difference.

Battery just makes so much sense these days. I’ve got a decent used Stihl in
the garage right now that needs a carb rebuild, I suspect, as I can’t get it
started to save my life (it does run on ether, though!) I’m looking for easy,
not more work.

Same year as Angie's Golf although hers has the BEW "Pump deuce" engine and I
think this is an older VE type. I prefer the older engine although I guess the
BEW can make more serious power. In any case a stage 1 tune takes it to 110hp
for about $300. Totally worth it, it's the tune the Euro engines already have
That price is absurd, the car looks nice but not that nice... Gen 4 cars are
getting a little hard for find but they're still around.

Which reminds me of a trick I've taken to:

The wheels on the VWs (both the Golf and Jetta) are enclined to weld themselves
to the rotors. I used to put anti-seize on but as you probably know that
"mechanics glitter" can make an awful mess if you touch it.

Watch Wes Work on Youtube uses fluid film so the last time I had the wheels off
I tried that, a quick spray on the wheel where it contacts the hub. Wheels come
off again no problem. I'm sold, of course the car does smell of sheep for a
couple days...

[MBZ] OT: TDI brakes

2024-04-18 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
So my 2015 Jetta TDI has needed brakes for awhile now, they were pulsing
something terrible. I'd blamed it on Angie's riding the brakes. She does but in
this case I think it was actually my fault.

The pins on the front brakes had very little grease left. Pads looked fine but
I think the rotors were cupped, causing some of the pulsing. The pins also had
a coating of dried schmutz, presumably the remnants of the grease. I soaked
them in brake fluid and cleaned with a wire brush and very fine steel wool. I
found I had a spare in my parts bin so I swapped that in for the worst one.

When I reinstalled I coated them with a thick layer of Sil-Glyde silicone pin
lube. I only discovered it a few years ago and clearly needed to put some on
the last time I did these brakes.

The rear pads were worn but the rotors were trashed, big chunks out of them. I
had to spend considerable time cleaning the caliper frame to get the new pads
in. I think that rust jacking had trapped the pads and stuck them to the rotor
which destroyed it.

Anyway when I had the car in for a new timing belt recently they quoted me
$1500 for this job, all in I paid around $250. Took me just under 5 hours all
told and it would have been quicker but after I did the fronts I cleaned up and
took it for a ride which is when I realized I needed to do the rears too...

2024-04-18 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
My 2015 Jetta TDI is a hoot and a hollar, 140ish post-dieselgate HP scoots it
along nice. It'll pull hard up around 95mph which is as fast as I've ever cared
to go. Its maybe a little bigger than a 123 inside. I can ride in the backseat
with the front seat setup for me. If I put the front seat all the way back I
can't get the clutch all the way down.
Slightly more tinny than a 123 but the engine is quieter so its probably a
wash. Not quite as comfortable a ride as an MB...

I was astonished when I started driving a TDI and finally had a turbo that's
spooled and working at 900 rpm. The turbo is so much more effective on those
cars.

I've never driven a newer MB diesel, I'd hope the turbo gets going sooner...

Turbo is a bit slow to spool up on these, so you'd need to learn to not let the
RPMs fall too much during shifts.

Vibratory tools have been out for awhile but I don't think the cutters were
very good. Newer ones are much better and way more precise than you can be with
a sawzall.

I've got a Makita cordless one, its going to get exercised next month cutting
new heading ducts into the great northern estate. The builders put in new
floors but didn't cut in any ducts, which is fine, I'm ordering nickle plated
grates anyway.

On a related note, has everyone discovered “multitools,” the things with the
blade that sticks out and vibrates? When I replaced the service door on the
garage in Flagstaff, I bought a nice M18 Milwaukee one. Cut through stuff like
buttah, and flush, too! Just used it again last week. Why didn’t someone think
these up years ago? Even a corded one would be nice.

Which Atlas saw do you have?

We've got the Bauer ultra cheapie one which has been a solid saw other than the
tensioner stinks. The Atlas appears to have a more convention chain tensioning
system.

I really like electric for a trimming saw because of the way the saw stops
pretty much immediately when you let go of the trigger. This is doubly true for
when I'm up on a ladder.

We've got some spruce trees on the great northern estate that are between the
house and the telephone lines (definitely telephone, I know the difference)
that need to go. They're not too high yet so I think with the electric saw I
can take them down piece by piece off a ladder. An electric saw will be the way
to go...

Re: [MBZ] 300D Manny

2024-04-18 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I'd always assumed a 240D 3.0 would be an "adequately powerful 240D".

As somebody who lives where its kind of hilly a 240D with its 50mph max
sustained hill climbing speed was a drag. I used to hit some hills at 70mph so
I could crest at 55. A 190D has the same power but a little less weight and
could hold speed up the hills.

I was very happy with my '98 Jetta TDI, at 90hp it had enough power to
accelerate up those hills so I recon a 240D 3.0 would probably be able to
sustain speed or maybe accelerate a little.

Of course there would be a fuel use penalty on the NA engine.

LOL,

If I could have been there I might have given it a try. The biggest problem in
the great northern estate right now is that the water isn't turned on.

I finally ordered a sediment filter which is the last piece needed. The next
time we're up there I need to install that and get a new pressure switch for
the pump. I also need to remove the last of the galvanized plumbing...

Of course the system hasn't been tested since we got all new plumbing, there's

Apparently most of my family is going to be there.
