Just did this a couple of months ago.
1. Remove old.
2. Install new, being careful to use washer(s) AND being careful to seat the
hook end of the lever.
3. Hook up a MityVac to the shutoff valve and pump.
4. If the shutoff valve doesn't fall off, reinstall screws. If it does fall
off, return
If you can tug on the valve and feel resistance when it is being held on

My 77 240D did that for a while. I reseated the speedo cable (took it out,
blew the dust off of it, and reattached) and the noise went away and has
stayed away. I think it had just become a bit loose, and tightening fixed

I'd still replace the thermostat, in spite of your kitchen test. That can be
the only variable here that I can imagine. Pretty cheap test. If nothing
