[MBZ] XP Update: for real or did I get punked?

2014-12-21 Thread Van Knutson via Mercedes
A Windows XP update popped up in the Windows toolbar in the same place where
Win updates have for years. It popped up from the MS shield toolbar icon (ie,
not a web ad)
There were two files, which after some hesitation, I green-lit.  One was
KB972270 and a second one whose number I didn't record.
I thought MS didn't support XP anymore.  Did they have a change of heart, or
did I get punked?  Looked legit.

[MBZ] ROM BIOS is a wirus you get when you open an email

2014-12-16 Thread Van Knutson via Mercedes
I got a call from Ah-Poo, aka Mike who sounded like he was from the Microsoft
branch office in Calcutta, warning me breathlessly that reports from their
servers detected a virus (wirus) had infected my computer! If I turned
control of my computer over to him, he assured me, he could clean my computer.
I told him I would only speak to a Microsoft Certified Technician, and asked
him if he was one.  He said yes. I said before we go any further, explain to
me, in detail, about the architecture of the DOS ROM BIOS, of which Windows is
a part, and any MSCT would know by heart.  Crickets, followed by a hangup.
Lo, not 15 minutes later, I got ANOTHER call from Microsoft, perhaps this
time from Bombay.  Same-same as the first conversation, and when I asked him
the magic question, this one didn't skip a beat, and told me ROM BIOS is a
wirus you get when you open an email.  I had to give him points for thinking
on his feet.
So, as a public service to the MB community, don't open any emails, or you may
get a ROM BIOS

[MBZ] Ponomusic. Opinions?

2014-12-04 Thread Van Knutson via Mercedes
Ponomusic ( https://ponomusic.force.com/  ) is a high def music project backed
by Neil Young.  Its an inline lossless digital music player, due to ship Q1
2015 at $400 a pop.  Their library is rather limited at the moment, but they
plan on expanding rapidly as more licensing agreements are signed with artists
and publishers.  That aside, they claim to at least attempt to improve the
throughput quality of non-lossless files -- even mp3's -- as well, meaning you
don't necessarily have to buy their remastered files for it to work, with the
aforementioned caveats on output quality. Their files are extremely dense,
turning what would be a 3-4 meg mp3 into 50-60 meg file, if memory serves.
Their current players are expandable to 128 G -- 64 G on board, with a 64 G slot
So, is this a game changer in high-def listening, or a well-intentioned but
ultimately non contributory measure to improve the art? Opinions?

[MBZ] Dead Men Get No X-Rays

2014-10-30 Thread Van Knutson via Mercedes
The wife, who is an X-Ray tech at the crosstown clinic, tried to process a 41
year old white male for a scan, but couldn't because he was dead.
It was the opinion of my highly trained spouse that, not only was he not
deceased, he was actually in pretty robust physical condition.
He got shuffled off to the reception / data processing / information management
bureaucracy, in what I would assume, was an attempt to electronically revive
him. Karen stayed until the clinic closed and told me he never came back for
his X-Rays.

[MBZ] Convoy

2014-10-06 Thread Van Knutson via Mercedes
Does anyone still use CB radios anymore?

I was thinking about our planned caravan to Indiana with three vehicles
(me driving our Big Red Van [BRV (tm)] towing our utility trailer, Shirley
driving our E320, and my brother driving a rental truck towing our
240D/3.0), and realized that cell phones wouldn't work too well. It
occurred to me that CB radios would be better, allowing the two other
people to hear what one was saying.

I have located three CB radios, four* from our local freecycle group for
free and one from a $10 eBay auction, but I don't know if they work
because I don't have any antennas.

Any suggestions on antennas?

Thanks,

Craig

***
You are overthinking it. Todd and i used to go on road trips using a pair of
hand held walkies. They don't have the legs CB's do, but if you don't get
separated by more than a few miles, they work just fine. Bring an extra set of
AA batteries to refresh, and you are good to go. Turn 'em off every time you
pull off for a gas or pee break.

PLus, they are newly manufactured stock, cheap ($30+ for a pair -- get the
highest rated wattage output you can find for a reasonable price), and you
don't have to worry about electronics from the Jimmy Carter administration.

[MBZ] N2 in tires -- the chemist has spoken

2014-09-10 Thread Van Knutson via Mercedes
Dry nitrogen gas as an option to inflate premium tires (the places that have
beluga caviar in the waiting rooms) is used because

1) The gas contains no moisture, and

2) 100% Nitrogen replaces oxygen in air, and oxygen decays rubber over time,
thus at least extending tire life from within. Nitrogen is by no means inert,
but oxidizes at a rate much lower than its namesake.

Any dry non-O2 bearing gas would do, and N2 is plentiful and cheap...except if
you are pumping it into Michelins, apparently.

That means, of course, every time you have to top off your tires, you must
continue to supplement the dry N2. No gas station air pumps for you!

The internal environment of dry N2 prevents the one-two punch of water and
oxygen rotting rubber. The third component is light (photodecay), but if you
see light on the inside of your tire, its time to get new tires. This I tell
you.

It has no effect on any external tire performance properties, to my knowledge.
I will stand corrected if that assumption is wrong

[MBZ] I'll pass on the peas.

2014-07-22 Thread Van Knutson via Mercedes

My father-in-law has always been reluctant to talk about his wartime
service. This was due to the fact that he was a POW camp guard, and in his
mind not a worthy contribution to the war effort.

He's never really opened up about it at length, but we know that he guarded
German prisoners at Camp Atterbury in south central Indiana, close to the
town he grew up in, Ninevah, IN.

What we do know is that many of the POWs were used as farm laborers and were
well thought of by the locals. They welcomed the into their homes and became
friends with many of them.  From what we were told a number of them either
remained in the area after the war or returned on their own to live in the
 area.

There was a large German community in Indianapolis, so I am sure some might
have headed that way. The area I grew up in on the south side of
Indianapolis had a lot of first generation German immigrants who were
 farmers.

 Dan

 Sent from my iPad

**
Local story:  Our high school's German teacher was a former POW in a camp in
Reedsburg, WI, in southern Wisconsin. His day job along with other POW's was to
work the fields for a pea farmer.  While I'm sure he ultimately had a well
balanced diet, his vegetable ration consisted of peas, peas, and more peas.

He stayed in the States after the war, and the employment path of least
resistance for him was to teach high school German, which he did into the
1980's before retiring.  He told us his POW stories, and while his memories
were mostly good ones, he said he never ate another pea again, for which I
can't blame him.

[MBZ] MB and their shatty wraparound antennas

2014-04-14 Thread Van Knutson
I had a 124 with its up-down-up-down trunk mounted power antenna that could
pull in Chicago FM stations from 80 miles away like they were next door

Next in succession is my 210 E320 with its stupid wrapped around the windshield
antenna.  The first thing I did in the new buggy was tune in the Chitown
stationand got nothing but static.  The tuner on the 210 even has trouble
pulling some of the low power stations from Milwaukee that are 24 miles away.
One day I swapped vehicles with Mrs. Information Minister and her  RAV-4 with
an external antenna that pulls 'em in just like the dear departed 124 used to,
if not better.

Is there anything I can do to improve reception in the 210?  It has a different
radio than the 124, but I don't know if the tuner is different from the old
one, if that is a factor and I am misplacing blame on the antenna.

You can run a wire from the terminal and velcro it to your dashboard and scroll

There are a couple of manufacturers ,and the best rated one for bang/buck runs

I confess testing the physical key in the door didn't occur to me @ time of

penetrated in god knows how long (it was 10 yrs old when I bought it in 2009

[MBZ] MORE WHINING BY INFORMATION MINISTER

2010-09-09 Thread Van Knutson
Windows XP back up, internet back up, but no sound.  God though, it runs like
greased lightning.  Google chrome is the schnizzle manizzle.
-- I have a Logitech X-230 speaker system.  Looked up in Logitech website and
it has no drivers.  This is the third computer its been plugged into and its
always been plug + play, never failed in any circumstance, including the
present machine, pre-virus..
-- Microsoft has automated troubleshooting page.  I ran the no sound
diagnostic and it failed to rectify it, save for the suggestion that live
support is next, for a $$ Ulysses. Said no thanx I'll keep the fifty..
--I challenge the system by playing an mp3 from my iTunes library and it
immediately flags it with a no sound device detected warning.

--just in case Logitech system is effing things up. I disconnected it from the
back of the computer and plugged in some headphones into the headphone
jack--figuring there is now nothing standing between the guts of the system and
sound output--and no sound from those either.
--control panel, system, update drivers, etc. no avail.
--sound device control panel says no audio system detected.

PS-- installed Avast freebieware per the august counsel of this forum, and it
works well.  24 hrs so far and no virus!  woo hoo!   will add malwarebites in
very near future.  I tend to be very rough on antivirus software, lets just put
it that way 8)

[MBZ] Virus attack on the Information minister

2010-09-05 Thread Van Knutson
My computer was attacked over the weekend by the most tenacious malware I have
seen to date. It locks down your computer--you can't open docurment, video,
IE, nothing--telling you your computer is infected and tries to direct you to a
fake antivirus site where if you buy their fake antivirus software they will
fix the problem they caused to begin with.  They wanted $49.95!  Just pure
extortion.

I had to wipe my hard drive and reinstall useless Windows.  I had legit
antivirus security (Shield Deluxe), but it was obviously defeated.  After
reinstalling, I now have no internet or sound--have to install drivers.  I am
typing this from work :).

I will be shlepping my CPU to Todd's house to work on installing drivers so
I can get my computer back the way it used to be.   grr.

Anyway, it is my intent to audition yet another antivirus program.   My first
program was compromised--Zone Alarm, and now my second one--Shield Deluxe
Pro--went down as well.

Any suggestions out there?  I seem to get 6 months to a year out of a security
suite before it gets penetrated.  Is this acceptable loss, as they say in the
military? I understand this version of ransomware is a particularly bad one.  I
have about   200 days left on my Shield license but I am going to move on.  It
has already been found wanting.

I looked up antivirus reviews on PC mag and CNET and the general consensus is
BitDefinder and Norton, which--according to them--has repaired its subpar
reputation in the last two yrs to become a very good system

Thoughts? I have no antivirus software on board at the moment which will not be
an issue until I get my internet connectivity back.

Swedish motorist caught driving at 290km/h (180mph) in Switzerland could be

The 37-year-old, who has not been named, was clocked driving his Mercedes
sports car at 170km/h over the limit.
Under Swiss law, the level of fine is determined by the wealth of the driver
and the speed recorded.
In January, a Swiss driver was fined $290,000 - the current world record.
Local police spokesman Benoit Dumas said of the latest case that nothing can
justify a speed of 290km/h.
It is not controllable. It must have taken 500m to stop, he said.
The Swede's car - a Mercedes SLS AMG - has been impounded and in principle he
could be forced to pay a daily fine of SFr3,600 for 300 days

If you do buy cigars from Canada, that you are allowed to take back with

claimed them upon arriving home, and received a cheque.  As the taxes are

The US does have some pretty good microbrews.  Sprecher, based out of
Milwaukee, is so popular that it is in danger of losing its microbrew status.
Could probably be the next Miller if they were ambitious enough, meaning sadly
of course that it would probably turn into another Miller, if you know what i
mean.

Re: Harley: this isn't a union issue.  H-D's unique relationship with their
employees where probably 99% of employees own hogs and are intensely loyal to
the company.  They are receptive to inevitable insurance/wage/freeze/cutbacks.

The fuckup here is the state of Wisconsin.  They are planning on changing the
tax status of Harley Davidson.  Its a bit complicated, but at present, whatever
state HD does business in, Harley gets to pay taxes at the tax rate of that
state.  IN that most states have lower tax rates than Wis, this is a strategic
advantage for HD.

However, the powers that be in Madison propose to change that so that *ALL*
business done in other states is payable to the state at Wisconsin's rates.
Retroactive to Jan 1, this introduces an instant addit'l tax liability to HD of
$22 million.   HD is struggling mightily, with indulgences such as Harleys
being the first budget item cut by families, and they just don't have $22 M
which they'll have to cough up annually into perpetuity.

THe public is very upset over the state being so short sighted that they are
threatening a landmark industry that has defined Milwaukee since 1903 over a
$22 million money grab, which they will get to do exactly once before HD packs
up and leavs.  Public sentiment is 99% in support of Harley, and disgust
towards the State.

The left wing rag Milwaukee Journal moans about Harley's lack of loyalty to
Milwaukee and Wisconsin in their op eds, but get little traction.

Meanwhile there are other states lined up at HD's door courting them--the usual
low tax states: Tennessee, Kentucky etc. begging them to move.  Who wouldn't
want a plum like Harley Davidson?  You can practically wrap yourself in the
American flag.

All this is still in the proposal stage, but if it goes thru and HD leaves
after 107 years here, heads in Madison will roll like pumpkins.

We have minimum beer and wine pricing here.  I remember about 10 years or so
years ago, there was a local wine producing, offering a good wine for $3.50
or so a bottle.  Gov said no no to that, much charge at least 7.50 or
whatever it was.  It's not the greedy beer and wine producers, it's the gov
that seems to if they set the min price high enough, no one will get drunk
and misbehave.  Another example of, how did we ever get by before the gov
came along told us what was best for us.  hee hee.

As for cigars, they are something I enjoy, along with the odd bowl of pipe
tobacco.  Usually a bowl or a cigar on the weekends.  I have a few Cohibas
in my humidor at the moment, but I have to admit, not my fave stick.  My
fave shape is Robusto.  Big enough ring to get enough complexity from the
filler, and a long enough smoke for me.  Pipe tobacco, I lean towards the
English blends, with Latakia.  Hard to find a good selection of proper
pipe tobaccos now.  I hear Dunhill is reintroducing several of theirs.

Back to wineI think the Italians have it all figured out.  last time i
was there, a decent bottle of red table wine, cost the same per litre as a
litre of premium fuel. hee hee.

Plan another trip up, we have several really good tobacconists with great
selections of cigars.  :-)  Just remember to fill your tank before crossing
over, the gas prices here will shock you!!

Ed

You and I have similar smoking habits re: weekends.  The rationale is: its bad
for you, and if you do it a lot it will kill you, but if you do it jst a
bit, maybe you can get away with being naughty!  Either way, life without an
occasional good cigar is a life not worth living, eh?

Yeah, that would be cool.  Where in CA do you live?  I live in the Milwaukee
area, Racine to be exact.  As mentioned, my one trip to the Great White North
was to Sarnia, ONT, just north of Detroit/Windsor.

There is some booze that I wouldn't mind hooking up with in Canada.  IIRC, we
Americans get to declare one litre per adult per trip duty free.

I'm not sure what the deal w/cigars is.  Cubans going back are a no-no, but you
simply unband them in-country and put another on them, like Dutch Masters   ;

You unwittingly hit a sore spot.  On balance, Canadian beer--if you forced my

However, what y'all got on us absolutely is your access to Cuban cigars.  My

We cherished every puff--even more so because they were contraband once we got
them across the border.
When Cuba got off the Soviet Union's tit when the Russkies collapsed at the end

gas, read up on what the governments take of that same gallon is!!

Federal (US) tax per gallon is 18.4 cents.  It does not appear to discriminate
between gas and diesel.
Source for all 50 states, not just wisconsin:
http://wisconsingasprices.com/tax_info.aspx

Wis example: 18.4 (Fed) + 51.3 (WI) = $ 0.697 / gal.
For you fureners, that comes out to $0.18 USD per liter.

It is also notable that some states tax MORE for diesel than gas.  Wisconsin
charges 6 cents more (57.3)... This is our thanks for using energy efficient
diesel?  With new low sulfur formulation, the feds can no longer accuse us of

Not sure about gas where you buy it, but here, most premium is all gas,
where the lower grades are cut with ethynol (sp).  It doesn't have the same
bang for the buck per gallon, so when you factor all things, in, I'm not
sure how much cheaper running regular really is.  I personally just follow
the manual.  Run premium where it says to, and regular in the cars that were
made for it.

I dunno, but in the Peoples' Republic of Wisconsin, the 10% Ethanol sign just

Well, if it weren't for tax considerations, you could run 100 octane low lead
(about twice as much lead as regular gas had when it went off the market about
20 years ago) aviation fuel. The good news is that 100LL doesn't have any of
the oxidizers in it that make it decompose in the fuel tank if you don't empty
your tank every month or two. Very long shelf life on the avgas, but it's also
not very eager to evaporate, so it doesn't make good winter fuel.

men from Planet Earth first set foot on the Moon.
I still remember watching it on TV like it was last night.
--R

I was at church camp watching the drama unfold on a 20 inch b/w tv in the
cafeteria along with about 100 other 12, 13 and 14 year olds, holding hands
with a girl named Dawn who was incubating what would be my lifelong fixation on
large breasts.

We were transfixed, wondering what the Big Statement would be when Neil
Armstrong's feet touch Terra Luna.  He said Thats one small step for man, one
giant leap for CRACKLE CRACKLE.  We all groaned because we didn't get the
last words.  Later on in the broadcast they told us we missed mankind.   The
historical replays cleaned up the audio considerably, tho you can still hear
the loud crackle just as he says mankind

The next day, July 22, marked my first feel from said same buxom-at-13 Dawn,
which pretty much sealed the deal re: mammaries.  I remember only fleetingly
the breastications I have participated in since, but, like the moon landing, I
remember that one like it was yesterday as well. She was wearing a faded yellow
tee shirt.
   ** sigh **

IT was a memorable time in my life on many fronts, pun intended.

So I wonder if time has been kind to Dawn? Gravity has a way of not being so
good for such enhancements.

Randy

We stayed in touch until she was about 18 or 19.  At that age, she was still
bouncin' and behavin', of course.  However, the problem with her was about a
foot higher up.  Dawn's IQ was about the same as her bustline, and by then she
had dropped out of high school, so I saw no future in the relationship.  Enter
college, where I found there were plenty of young ladies who were both busty
and brainy out there.

I look at gravity as the wages of sin one pays for the pleasures of the
breast.   There is no guarantee small, so called perky boobs stay that way
either. I've seen small, perky boobs turn into small, perky pancakes--not
seeming to fare much better--considering the purported advantages of
compactness.

I don't buy the argument that small boobs do not suffer from ptosis, just to a
lesser extent--merely reflecting sour grapes from the A and B cup crowd.   So,
the moral of the story is, if gravity ravages all racks over time, go for the
gusto and let the chips fall.

[MBZ] Dogs and Engine Signatures

2010-07-18 Thread Van Knutson

I watched a newsmagazine segment about this subject.  A man who owned a 95 (?)
Jeep Cherokee and had two scotties (this was about 10 yrs ago).  A camera crew
was inside his house, and when his Jeep was still about a block away, the
scotties ran to the door and waited.

The crew then borrowed two Cherokees of the same year, make and model from a
local dealer and drove those Jeeps down the street.  Neither scottie budged
from their beds.

So, the logical conclusion is that dogs can pick out individual engine sound
signatures, and that even identical makes and models don't fool them.  Very
interesting, I thought.
