280SE

And have to say after only being able to play with it for about a day, I love
it. It needs some TLC, but the pep and design details on it have won my heart.

Now to fix that vapor lock, which I just reproduced with the engine temp at
about 190 degrees, while idling. Engine puttered out and stalled. I can get to
to start with a little throttle, but stalls quickly after.

Where can I get that new check valve again? Going to try this and some
insulation and see what happens.

Couple of additional pics

I believe this was a family owned car down in OK. I don't have the full story
yet but I'll dig it up, it has "the original" German plates, but I don't know
how accurate that is. It's supposed that the daughter barn garaged it for like
10 years, and had been driving it recently daily until it started vapor locking
/ having hot start issues. Spent a little trying to fix it, and I think
replaced the fuel pump, cleaned filters/screens but didn't dive deep to fully
diagnose. My hope is that I'll wrap the fuel lines, replace the check valve and
w the cooler weather here in IL will suitable for commuting :)

Re: [MBZ] W124 Hood Release will not work

2015-07-20 Thread Darren Marshall via Mercedes
77 240d, not sure if it's the same mechanism... but the way you describe it
sounds the same.

There is a slightly hooked spring loaded latch that attaches to the handle.
Release the hood lever thing from inside, then wrap the wire around the
latch and pull forward the same way you would pull the handle.

On Sun, Jul 19, 2015 at 5:28 PM, Max Dillon via Mercedes
mercedes@okiebenz.com wrote:

Darren, which car? Does hood latch mean the handle that pops out of the
grill after the inside hood release is pulled?

Running a piece of wire around the base of the lever may allow Larry to
release the hood by pulling the wire toward the passenger side of the car.

Re: [MBZ] Fixing oxidized chrome trim

2015-06-19 Thread Darren Marshall via Mercedes
I'll get more pics together, body is in great condition, very very little
rust, nothing on the underside or wheel wells, I think it may have been
resprayed in the 80s, clearcoat seems to have disappeared on one of the
doors, but with a good wax you can't tell ;) -- I think the color is
Calendonia

As mentioned trim is oxidized, interior is almost mint, but I had to
replace a driver seat which was an 8hr pain in the ass, and needs to be
re-tracked.

She's a real looker from 5ft

214k miles, I'm having belt issues regularly. I think I need a replacement
tension bolt but can't seem to find one.

Re: [MBZ] Archoil Snake Oil?

2015-05-11 Thread Darren Marshall via Mercedes
Have not... but I have tried Bars leaks engine repair, after I took the 240D in
for a check up and the owner told me compression was super low in cyl 1,
couldn't tell me why, but that I should buy a new motor!

So, the next day I changed the oil and figured I'd dump some of the sealant in
and see what happens... well, compression shot up within 24hrs. I boogied!

It might end up being a last resort, but after the journey I'd been through
getting it on the road, I'd be damned if I wasn't driving it daily until it
dies. And so far, runs just fine.

Re: [MBZ] Anyone near Bellaire, Mi?

2015-05-08 Thread Darren Marshall via Mercedes
Yeah, it was quite the adventure!

This was the first trip I'd taken over 50 miles since getting it on the road. I
suppose it was quite a risk for a car that hadn't been driven in 14 years, but
I needed to put it through the gauntlet--it was also stag weekend, and my wife
needed the rover. I got a clean bill of health from my local shop, had a
gallon of Rotella, coolant, water, tools,

Anyhow, highway driving was pretty smooth, but couldn't really cruise past 70
unless on a slope. Floored it the whole way...

By the time we got to Bellaire, the hills just did us in. I finally puttered
into the driveway of the house we rented, and the car was begging for mercy. I
had to call up a local mechanic to source an alternator belt, as mine (only two
months old, which had been set and tightened a week later) was stretched so bad
I'm pretty lucky it didn't fall right off.

Topped off the oil, and she cranked right back up Monday am. So almost 1200 odd
miles later, we were back in Chitown. She's squealing pretty bad now while
idling, which I need to figure out... but I'm awfully proud that it held up as
well as it did. Almost thought I was going to bury her up in those mountains.

[MBZ] Replacing fuel injectors on '77 240d

2015-04-26 Thread Darren Marshall via Mercedes
Hi all, been a while since I posted -- hope you guys are doing well. I've
finally managed to get my 240d ready for the road after a long bonded-title
process. I've noticed my injectors have been leaking, and I suspect both
clogged nozzles and bad hoses.

I've never done any work myself on injectors, and am wondering if anyone has
any experience with Monarch nozzles? Additionally, if anyone in Chicago is
willing to help me with the work, or know roughly what this work should cost
from a shop, I'd really appreciate it.

Like redoing a wood floor, you will also need smaller grinders to tackle

there, saving a little labor and cash.

The estate attorney pretty much told me I was up a proverbial creek, as they

I ended up telling the CA DMV to bite me and went to one of the lost title

$200 at the time and was done in a day via FedEx.

I wasn't keen about this approach as it broke the chain of the car's history,
but I wasn't about to be held up by the CA DMV for close to two grand, either.

1.) the car does not show up hot
2.) there are no liens
3.) you have a bill of sale
4.) you have a written appraisal of the wholesale value by a licensed dealer
5.) you obtain a surety bond for 1-1/2 times the appraised value
6.) you have the patience to wait 6-12 weeks for the process with the state to

Best route is to call your card issuer and file a chargeback. They will ask you
to file a simple report, credit you your monies and attempt to collect the
amount from the merchant.

This works best with credit cards, but each card issuer has policies for
dealing with chargebacks / affidavits for unauthorized use etc.

Good luck guys, sorry to hear this is happening.

2013-06-17 Thread Darren Marshall
Naw man, in fact I said that I'm not discrediting the argument for the need for
policy change on these issues.

You are entitled to your opinion, and assuming you're of age and legal status,
you're also are entitled to vote on these issues... hell, run for office, this
is America! But be careful who you represent...

It might seem like a noble thing to say it's the law but let's get real. It's
a slippery slope. Watch the news lately?

You are also clearly stereotyping. On one hand criminalizing people that are
using the system, and on the other criminalizing people who are not using the
system seems a bit hypocritical.

As a business owner who supports and participates in legitimate work visa
sponsorship programs, I can personally tell you that not all people from all
countries have an equal shot at opportunity here. Keep in mind that at some
point, we all came from somewhere else.

I'll also tell you that the only real difference between an immigrant coming
here legally/illegally will come down to how much money is in their pocket, and
if they have access to quality legal counsel. Fair?

Putting the spotlight on, and generalizing on these two groups are part of the
reason this country has such strong ADD, and can never focus on big issues long
enough to see real change.

Well that's just fine and dandy, perhaps next week I'll attempt to put fuel

last thing going on are the new tires, maybe today or tomorrow.

then, have a little bit of paperwork to do with the state, and then she'll
be on the road.

maybe a photoshoot in the meantime ;)

Yep, it's an open layout, roasting in back, cafe in front. Our retail manager
Talya, or our Operations Director Brian will be there to give a nice tasting...
both award winning Baristas.

Metered parking on the street, the earlier the better to find spots in front,
but should be np for a handful of cars.

That is what I was guessing - weekday morning sometime.
Laptop/MissB, m/m-z, me (thet's 5 people) have expressed desire to see
your shop do roasting. Baristas pull espresso at the same location?
 Pictures sound great, if/when.
What is parking situation at shop location?

you should check the timing chain stretch next time the valve cover is

Re: [MBZ] OT - Coffee stuff FS

2013-06-02 Thread Darren Marshall
Agreed, glad there are some coffee enthusiasts here :)

I recently opened a roastery with a few partners in Chicago last year called
Bow Truss; we use a 12 kilo probat, serve up some really special naturals
(Ethiopia Sidama, Yirgacheffe), a bunch of single origins (Timor, Guat, Papau
New Guinea) and a couple of blends.

I push v60 for home brewing, it's a bit of science but is super simple for
those looking to get away from drip pots...

of each, if/when - let me/us know price shipped?
 What type of roaster?
8 years ago one of the neighbors roasted coffee, he moved to FL.
What brew method do you you use?
Coffee chatter at okie-mercedes - interesting.

Awesome, Craig.

Used to live in NM as a kid; Rio Rancho and Corrales, until I was about 12,
moved from Fairbanks, AK when my dad was transferred to Kirkland AFB.

Love the Balloon Fiesta, parents were a part of a chase crew we'd drive all
over the state in a 50s Chevy pickup, to refuel them on their hops.

Sorry to embark on a trip of nostalgia, while you're skirting danger. Just
haven't been back in ages...

Stay safe

Re: [MBZ] Brake line threads not fitting caliper

2013-05-11 Thread Darren Marshall
Well that's the thing, the passenger side fit like a glove. Driver side brake
line just won't tighten all the way.

VIN is 123123-12-025776

There are numbers on the caliper which ya want?

All W123 front calipers are the same. The only thing is they used Bendix or
ATE. As long as you change both it doesn't matter. They took different brake
hoses depending on the VIN but it didn't impact the calipers. Are there any
numbers on the caliper or box? Perhaps it was just picked wrong or there is
the chance that the wrong one was put in the right box. What is your
 complete VIN?

Was putting NuGeon remanufactured calipers this morning, and the threading
on the driver front caliper is too shallow to fit the brake line.

Looks like this morning just got shot in the foot.

Re: [MBZ] Brake line threads not fitting caliper

2013-05-11 Thread Darren Marshall
No matter how long I tried to tighten the line, it gets to certain level of
tension, and just won't tighten to seal, as if the threading on the caliper
is stripped.

What's too shallow mean? There's typically quite a bit of fitting left
 exposed, but that doesn't matter.

Or are you saying the line won't fit?
