[MBZ] 240D shifter

2021-06-07 Thread John Ingram via Mercedes
Rick, That is not unreasonable, I’ll try to find a shifter first then that. He
has a lot of work and likes to choose what he wants to do.
JI

[Have the Indy take the old shifter off, help him push the car out the door,
have him install new bushings, help him push the car back in, reinstall the
shifter.

Probably take longer to move the car than fix it.
Or option B, find a new Indy.]

Re: [MBZ] 240D 4-speed

2021-06-04 Thread John Ingram via Mercedes
The shifter is loose and the reverse lockout is gone. The mechanic doesn’t
want to take the shifter apart because it will make the car unmovable unless
you push it. I’d like to get a shifter and rebuild it and then switch them.
The problem is now finding a shifter.

I did not try to fix the 4-speed shifter, the local mbz mechanic fixed one of

replace the worn out one in the car. Does anyone know where I can find one?

 Jaime,

Thank you, this is the explanation I was hoping for. I guess I’d need to get
under the car to do this? I don’t have a safe way to do that, may need to take
it to a shop (there is a good one near here). Can the shifter bushings be
replaced from inside the car?

[MBZ] 240D Shifter

2021-05-10 Thread John Ingram via Mercedes
Hello list,
I have a ’83 240D with a 4 speed manual. The car has about 330K miles. I was
driving today and when shifting into 2nd gear the shifter got stuck in neutral
position and would not move in any direction, I pulled and pushed the lever and
it freed up and I continued on everything working fine. I headed home and on a
hill had to downshift into first and the shifter suddenly felt like it was not
connected to anything. The car was still in 3rd gear but I couldn’t start out
in 3rd and it stalled. I started the engine and the shifter and transmission
worked normally the rest of the way home. The problem is intermittent, from
normal to stuck to normal to disconnected to normal.
Has anyone ever experienced this on a 240D 4-speed? Any ideas as to what it
could be?

[MBZ] 240D Glow Plugs not Glowing Update

2016-10-03 Thread John Ingram via Mercedes
Hello Everyone,
I went out to the car and searched for the fuse and finally found it inside the
cover on top of the relay. I hope it is the right fuse because it was blown
and came out in two pieces. It is just a steel band and looks like the fuses
in the on-line websites. The only lettering I can find looks to say 80A and is
followed by a P with a circle around it. Is this possible?
This car is a very late 83 240D, one of the last ones sent. Over the years I
have had to use the VIN number in order to get the right part. I think MBZ was
using the parts they had left when they made this car. Some parts were clearly
from earlier years, others may have been last minute changes.
I think I’ll look for a fuse first (80A?), It might fix it.
Thank you all again for your help!

When I turn the key on my ’83 240D the glow plug light goes on as usual but it

[MBZ] Vacuum Update

2015-05-25 Thread John Ingram via Mercedes
Hello Everyone,
Car is running fine with the door vacuum hoses plugged with a golf tee and the
door put back together. I tested the new door actuator and it does not work at
all, it is nothing but a vacuum leak. The part is a Mercedes Benz part (with
the star) that I think I got from the dealer. I will ask them about it but I
think I should at least send it back to MBZ USA parts, where ever that is. If
they have more of these we will all get them one at a time. I guess they don’t
test the parts when they are made.

Re: [MBZ] Vacuum Door Lock

2015-05-25 Thread John Ingram via Mercedes
Thank you all for your replies!
Last evening I ended up plugging the two vacuum tubes that go to the door lock
mechanism. Suddenly I had plenty of vacuum and everything else throughout the
system worked fine. I think the vacuum system is okay and that I got a bad
replacement part. I didn’t check it since I assumed it was good. I can’t
remember where the part came from and it is too late for a refund even if I
could find the receipt. I may just leave it plugged, I can lock and unlock the
door when needed.

Original note:
[[ I had a vacuum problem with my 240D. The car would not shut off unless the
rear drivers side door was locked. It would not automatically lock when the
drivers door was locked. If I pushed down the lock and let the vacuum build
back up the car would turn off normally. I replaced the vacuum mechanism in
the door and now have no vacuum at all. I switched the hoses and there is no
difference. Does anyone have experience with this? Please let me know.

[MBZ] 240D Battery report

2013-12-31 Thread John Ingram

Hello Everyone.

A while ago I put a note on the list about finding a battery for my
240D. I got a lot of good advice as always from the list (Thank
you). My problem was that some of the batteries had lower CCA than I
wanted. Also, the big parts stores say "yes, we have it" but they
don't HAVE it. I need to travel to the far away store that does have
it. The Sears website does not work on my computer etc. I called
the old run-down service center and parts store Pep Boys and they had
a Bosch Premium battery in the store. 1000CA at 32 degrees and 850
CCA and a good warranty. For $113. I have a battery that fits
perfectly and spins the engine faster than any battery I've ever had
in the car. The old diesel springs to life in mid 20s temps. It all
worked out well. They would have put it in for me but of course, the
car wouldn't run.

A very Happy New Year to all!

[MBZ] 240D Battery

2013-12-10 Thread John Ingram

Hello Everyone.
I am sorry if this has been covered recently but I need a replacement
battery for my 83 240D. The Interstate battery that is in it has
lasted a long time and I would like to simply replace it. However, I
find that the battery listed on the Interstate website is only
720CCA, the old one was 850CCA. The old tired diesel needs every bit
of help getting started. Does anyone sell a battery that will fit
correctly in the car with at least 850CCA?
If this topic has been covered recently please tell me when and I
will look it up.

[MBZ] 240D Axle Failed

2011-12-18 Thread John Ingram
At least I got home. The axle on my 83 240D has failed. Tap tap tap
turned into clack clack clack in about 10 miles of driving. While
crawling around under the car on the side of the road, I discovered
that the outer boot on the passenger side axle is torn and that is
where the sound was coming from. I guess the CV joint is shot. What
else could it be?
Over the years I have taken most of this car apart but never an
axle. Is it difficult to replace? I notice that there are
replacement axles available starting at $159.95, remanufactured at
$270, and GKN Drivetech at $471. Does anyone have any experience
with these?

[MBZ] 240D Vacuum

2011-02-09 Thread John Ingram
From time to time I have problems with the vacuum system on my 83
240D. Last time it was under the hood but once fixed everything
worked fine. Now my problem seems to be in the door locks. If the
doors are locked the engine will shut off fine. If the doors are
unlocked the engine keeps running after the key is removed. My
question is: Which door is usually the problem? If everyone has
found the problem (vacuum leak) in the same place I'd like to know
before I try and go through the 100 feet of vacuum tubes in the car.

Re: [MBZ] 240D decreased power

2010-08-02 Thread John Ingram

Dimitri-

I agree with Dwight. I will add that my 240D lost power at highway
speed and it was due to a slightly clogged secondary fuel filter
(looks like a screw on oil filter). I replaced the filter and it was
fine. While you are at it, replace the 1st filter (fuel screen).
Italian tune-up always helps.

My
82 240D has lost some power. Doesn't seem to want to accelerate much
past 70 mph and vibrates at idle. A similar thing happened about 20,000
miles ago and my mechanic adjusted the valves and some linkage on the
injection pump. Does anyone know what he may have done to the IP? It
made a world of a difference.>>>

[MBZ] Diesel Knocking replies

2010-07-20 Thread John Ingram
Thank you Dwight, OKDon, Dieselhead and Kaleb for your replies. I
can do an Italian Tune Up and since it is a 240D I won't likely get a
ticket. Dieselhead, I hope you are wrong, trying to get a prechamber
out could be the end of the car's life. Chain stretch is also a good
idea and easier to check.

I will go down the list starting with the "Tune Up".

John Ingram

<<<

List-
I have a 83 240D (266K). Lately the engine has been giving off a
crackling, knocking sound at low and medium throttle. It is the
kind of knocking sound you get from a gas engine when the octane is
too low. I've tried getting fuel from different stations and have
used additive, no difference. I thought I had water in the fuel but
it didn't change with the next fill up.
Any ideas as to what it could be?
Temps have been in the 90s here in Maryland for the past month.

First, Isolate the problem cylinder by cracking one injector line at
the nozzle holder, one at a time. If you wrap a rag around the line,
that will reduce the chance of getting a Diesel fuel shower when you
open the line. THe cylinder you work on will miss, but if the knock
goes away, that is the offending cylinder.

Once you have identified the offending cylinder, the next step is to
pull the nozzle and holder, and the seal, and in dusk conditions,
look inside the hole of the prechamber to see it the ball is there.
It is about 5/16 dia held in place by an rod that is about 1/8 inch
dia and splits around the ball to hold it. IF the ball is missing,
then you need to replace the prechamber. It takes a special tool to
remove the ring and a special puller.

Then take the nozzle and holder to a shop that has a nozzle tester to
get it checked. It probably is a dribbler. Is so, all 4 nozzles
need to be replaced, and the set recalibrated and tested. Look under
"Diesel fuel Injection" in the yellow pages for a good shop. The
dribbler will take out the prechamber ball. If you need a new set,
Rusty can sell you a new set, recalibrated, and you can put them in
yourself.

BE SURE TO PUT IN A NEW SEAL UNDER ANY INJECTOR YOU REMOVE!! IT IS A
METAL SEAL.

The injection shop should have them or you can buy them from Rusty.
800 741 5252

Carbon can cause knocking also, but the carbon is usually the after
affect of another problem. A long hard highway drive can clear out
carbon.

Good luck!

[MBZ] 240D Fuel Filter Leak

Hello all-
I have a 83 240D and I just replaced the large fuel filter and it is
leaking around the large bolt that tightens the filter on top of the
filter holder. It always seems like hit or miss with these things.
Is it the 'O' rings or is there a crush washer under the bolt that
needs to be replaced?

Thank you and a Happy Thanks giving to all.

[MBZ] 83 240D Heater Core

2006-10-02 Thread John Ingram
When I turn on the heat in my 83 240D I can smell antifreeze. It
doesn't fog up the windows but I know it isn't healthy and will only
get worse. Can't find a leak and one of my suppliers says he has
sold a lot of heater cores. I would guess that I need to replace
it. Has anyone done this job? I hear it is tough to get at the
heater core. Any advice would be appreciated.

Re: [MBZ] Steering Adjustment 240D

2006-08-08 Thread John Ingram

Jim and Loren-
Thank you both for the good advice. I would have started with the
steering box. I will check everything else first. I paid a lot of
money about 75K miles ago to get the front end rebuilt but it has
been 75K, they didn't replace everything.

[MBZ] Steering Adjustment 240D

2006-08-07 Thread John Ingram

Hello All-
I have lost my notes on adjusting the steering on my 83 240D. I
adjusted the steering about 5 years ago and recall that you loosen
the allen adjuster to tighten the steering, is this right? Anyone
know the proper Mercedes-Benz procedure?

Thanks,

Subject: [MBZ] 240D Vacuum Diagram

Hello All-
I would like to find a Vacuum System Diagram for my 83 240D 4-
speed. I notice that the vacuum line connections are numbered
and I have no way of knowing if they are connected properly.
I am having some engine shut off problems. I recently switched
engines but the problem had started with the previous engine.
If anyone has a diagram or can tell me where to find one please
let me  know.

Thank you,

Re: [MBZ] 240D Shifter

2006-07-14 Thread John Ingram

 Brian and Jim-
Thank you for your replies. I have 2 questions:

[In the meantime, does it help if you push toward the ground as you
move it
into first? I've started doing that after a couple grinds. I'm not
sure if

my bushing is warn, or if I just had a tendency to lift up slightly upon
seleting first gear.

Brian

Brian- I'll try that. So, if it were working properly would I have
to pull up on the shifter to get into reverse?

[I 'repaired' the worn plastic bushing in the Frankenheap's shifter
using Shoe Goo. Helped a lot.

-- Jim]

Jim-
Where is the "worn plastic bushing" and how do I get at it and fix it?

[MBZ] 240D Shifter

2006-07-11 Thread John Ingram
The 4-speed shifter in my 240D has a worn reverse lock out. It
allows me to accidently hit reverse while trying to find 1st gear. I
hear that the 4-speed shifter used on the 115 chassis 240Ds is better
and does not develop this problem. Does anyone know if they are
interchangeable? Does anyone know how I could fix the one in the car?

Re: [MBZ] Teflon Tape (Update)

2006-07-07 Thread John Ingram

(fuel filter center bolt and housing)
I talked to the local mechanic who has a stash of old MBZ Diesel
parts in the form of about a dozen junk diesel cars in his back lot.
He said he had some parts but encouraged me to try and get that
stripped allen bolt out and switch the parts I had. I thought I
might have to drill the top of the bolt off but I started by
hammering and chiseling. I managed to get the bolt out without
drilling (I never thought it would work) I then switched the housing
with the one from my other engine. I started it up and no leak! I
will take it for a test drive later today but I don't expect any
problems.
I'm glad you all talked me out of the teflon fix. I
unfortunately lapse into my hack mechanic skills when I am running
short of patience and/or time.

Thank you all for your help

Re: [MBZ] Teflon Tape (Explained)

2006-07-07 Thread John Ingram

Mike, Levi, Dave, Marshall, Tom, Rich, Jeff, and Harry-
Thank you all for your very good replies to my question about
teflon tape. The fuel leak is at the fuel filter center bolt (hollow
bolt) that holds the large fuel filter on. The little "O" ring on
this bolt is causing the problem. Since I just switched engines and
the old engine is still sitting there I looked at the bolt on that
housing and discovered that it was slightly different and had two "O"
rings. This would work fine since it never leaked on that engine,
however, It won't fit in the other housing. I would switch the whole
housing but one of the 6mm hex bolts holding the housing in place on
the engine in the car is stripped (by me), the 6mm hex is now a 6.5mm
round hole. I could switch the brace that holds the power steering
pump and the fuel filter housing etc., but it would be much easier if
I could get that bolt out. Does anyone know how to get that stripped
bolt out?
My short answer is that I am so glad to have this car running
again (running very well) that I just want to drive It and was
trying to find an easy fix. I will not use teflon tape because of
the risks you all pointed out. I will look it over again tomorrow.
I will also get a new "O" ring although I can see that this is a weak
spot that was fixed in the slightly later engines.

Thank you,
John Ingram

[MBZ] 240D Radiator

2006-07-04 Thread John Ingram

List-
I have my 83 240D running again with a "new" engine, one that
apparently was a factory rebuild 150K miles ago. My old radiator is
now leaking through a spot somewhere in the core. Can these
radiators be fixed or should I just start pricing a new one? What do
they cost?

Thanks.

Re: [MBZ] Clutch Bleed 240D (done)

2006-07-03 Thread John Ingram

Jim C. Mitch and Jim F.
Thank you for your suggestions. I went with the brake caliper to
slave cylinder method, it worked fine. The car is running well
except for the newly leaking radiator (I'll make that another post).
After all I had to do to replace the motor and all that could have
gone wrong, the radiator is very

manageable.
Thanks for your help.

[MBZ] Clutch Bleed 240D

2006-07-03 Thread John Ingram
I have just completed an engine switch on my 83 240D. One of the
last things I need to do is bleed the clutch cylinders. The manual
says it has to be done backwards (fluid from the slave cylinder to
the brake reservoir). I am not sure how to do this and was hoping
someone on the list has done it. What is the best way to do this?

Thanks,
John Ingram

Re: [MBZ] 240D Turbo

2006-06-19 Thread John Ingram
You all are right, a 240D turbo would eventually self-destruct. My
friend's car apparently covered 70K miles before the pistons
disintegrated. I plan to leave my 240D alone, I like driving around
with my foot firmly planted on the go peddle. I think the best
suggestion was to buy a 300D turbo and just add it to my collection.
However, I'd like to have a 4-speed, which can be done.

[MBZ] 240D Turbo

2006-06-17 Thread John Ingram
A friend who has owned MBZ Diesels over the years told me that he
once bought a turbo kit for the 240D from a company called
STT ,Svensk Turbo Technique, (a Swedish company). He said it was a
bolt on kit that transformed the car. Has anyone heard of it?
The other 240D turbo possibility is a 300D turbocharger and manifold
with one cylinder sawed off and blocked.
I think if I get my 240D going again I might just leave it alone,
but, it is a tempting idea.

[MBZ] 77-83 240D Glow plugs

2006-06-06 Thread John Ingram
Thank you Marshall and Kevin. From what you said there are new style
glow plugs available to fit an older engine, that would solve the
problem. Drop in power is only about 5 hp but that is almost 10%.
I need an engine and these cars are starting to become rare.

[MBZ] 77-83 240D Glow system

2006-06-06 Thread John Ingram
I am considering a 1977 240D engine for my 1983 240D. I know that
the glow plugs and glow electric systems are different. Can the 77
system be made to work in a 83 car?

[MBZ] 240D Engine

2006-06-05 Thread John Ingram
I know this is a long shot but, I live in Maryland and am looking for
an engine for my '83 240D. I have a nice rust free car with an
engine with 0 compression in cylinder #1. I have checked valves
etc. and bought a glow plug compression tester. It will run in 3
cylinders but there is a lot of blow by. Must have a hole in the
piston or something equally bad.
