now that we're on the topic of hydraulic fluid and jacks, how often should
 a
floor jacket be serviced and the fluid changed. I've had mine about 10
years now, and only use it about 4-5 times a year, and it seems to work
fine, no leaks or anything. should I be doing something to keep it
healthy? I have a couple of oil changes coming up, might as well add the
jack to the list too if it needs a fluid change, while my hands are dirty
 anyway. :-)

I used ATF for 20 years in my floor jack.. As mentioned, ATF is a kind
 of

hydraulic fluid are an important consideration. But a floor jack is not
 likely to

where someone can mistakenly used it for brake fluid. It will eat
 the brake

My guess is that one of the pods has a vacuum leak, and when the
ACC goes to actuate it the vacuum leaks away and the system defaults
to the defrost vent pattern. Maybe the footwell pod? Use a MityVac
on the lines coming out of the electric vacuum manifold behind the
ACC panel. (Or is it behind the glove box?)

Hi I have checked the vacuum lines and the tee connectors, all ok.

Does the air only ever come out the defrost vents (windshield or wind
screen)? If so I would first check your vacuum lines and make sure they
are

correct under the hood. The vents are controlled using vacuum, thus most
common problem is the black plastic Tee on driver's fender cracks and the
climate control goes to defrost all the time.

I bought the above manual a few eeeks ago from Rusty for around $25 and
have finally gotten thru most of it briefly. I haven't spent the time
to read every page in detail but I have seen enough to know this is
going to be a *very* useful reference manual! I highly recommend it -

It's got a list of off-the-wall problems like we see in the real world -
along with the solutions. I expect to get a lot of use from this over
the coming years. Don't know if Marshall refers to this or not, but I
see answers that *sound* like they came from Herr Diesel Dokter. ;-)
Things like Cuts out while coasting might be Loss of tach signal.
Pretty cool!

Anyway - it's on Rustys website -- 340+ pages of W124 E Class help.
covering years 86-95.

The Bible was written by Stu Ritter (who serviced Mercedes cars for
more than 30 years). He's also the Tech Editor of the MBCA Star
magazine. He know the cars VERY well. Presently he owns and drives a 124
400E and a '95 E320T.

Stu did most of the photography as well.

Along with the other parts, I will consider the idle control valve hose
as a possible culprit. I found my receipt and you are correct, the idle
control valve was replaced. In addition to the idle control valve hose,
I have not replaced the throttle position sensor (yet).

With regard to the smoke, the instance I reported was the one and only
time I have seen it - since I bought the car in 1993. I had the valve
seals replaced, along with so much else, when I bought the car. It has
performed beautifully with no smoke, since. Hopefully, that is not the
issue, though it is something I will have taken under consideration.

Barry:

To have a pressure test on the fuel injection system couldn't hurt, I'm
sure, particularly with the age of the engine. Thanks for the suggestion.

With regard to the hard start, I have only noticed it when the engine is
warm or has attained full operating temperature. When the engine is
cold, it seems to start with no trouble.

To all:

I cannot tell you how much I appreciate everyone's advice. I wish I was
as knowledgeable as you and could offer advice as you have to me.
Everyone who has responded has been kind enough to give me one more
thing to think about as the culprit and a direction in which I may need
to go.

Most likely you have a leaking idle control valve hose (the idle
control valve is what was replaced).

Smoke is likely blue, from worn out valve guide seals, you are due
for them. They can make starting slow on a cold engine, since oil leaks
down into the combustion chamber and can coat the plugs. Not a big
job, but not free as it takes a couple hours. The leaking idle control
valve hoses can also make starting slow.

Before someone starts replacing parts I suggest that you have them do a
pressure test on the fuel injection and make sure that the pressures
are all

 it is cold as well?

it should be.

I don't have a clue as to what may be causing the problem. I have had a
few things worked on lately, including a tune-up, with new spark plug
wires and distributor, cap and rotor, etc., which seems to rule out
those things as the issues.

The only thing that I know made a difference in the idle, and I assumed
might be part of the hesitation problem, as the hesitation showed up not
too long afterwards, was a part (wish I could identify it for you) that
reduced the idle from 1,000 to 1,100 rpm at idle in park, to 550-600 rpm
at idle in park. This part plugs in just under the air cleaner housing
in the front, top part of the engine, if that helps identify what it
might be. The engine idles smoothly when in park, neutral or in gear
(runs about 450 rpm in gear at a stop and there is no tremble).

My second problem is an intermittent hard starting problem (the starter
was replaced not too long ago and the problem just manifested itself).
Sometimes, I turn the key and it starts right up, like it always used
to. Now, though, if it doesn't start immediately, I turn the key and it
cranks for a few seconds before it finally starts. The last time that
happened, I saw smoke come out from the rear of the car (couldn't tell
what color, due to the ambient light). That was the first time I've
ever noticed smoke come from the tailpipe in the 13 years I've owned the
car.

My trusted mechanic closed shop and is leaving the N.O. area since
Katrina. So, I will be trying out a new mechanic to have this resolved
(wish I was mechanically inclined!). I would like to have an idea of
what I may be looking at before I go to a new guy.

Any thoughts any of you may have shall be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the useful info, well prepared in advance for the
replacements.

Regards
mak

The original tensioner arms and idlers used on '84-'85 OM60x engines
seldom lasted more than 50-75kmi. The later ones seemed good for
75-150kmi. By the '90s they may still be better (the aftermarket ones
MAY not be - I haven't had any of them in long enough to know). Factory
shocks seem to last 75+kmi while aftermarket ones seem more likely to
fail by 50kmi. The belts on my cars seem to go for 75kmi as long as the
arm and idler are in good working order (a bad arm, idler, shock or any
belt driven accessory will cause a belt to fail prematurely).

YMMV as climatic and environmental factors DO play a role in life of
these parts.

Hi! Just finished replacing the components of the belt tensioner - took
about 2 hours - removed the shroud and fan then the other pieces - but I
could figure out how to get the upper pivot off - thought it was a allen
bolt but closer inspection says no. But I looked at it closely and
decided

it looked fine anyway and re-used it. The lower tensioner pivot and the
spring and damper all had play in them and the engine is much quieter now.

Glad it's over ;-)

I believe I read something in the manual for my 83' 300D that says
that if
you have the climate control on at all and not in economy mode, then
the ac
compressor is basically on at any temp above freezing. Seems pretty
wasteful to me, but perhaps I don't fully comprehend the logic of the
system...

Dehumidification. If you don't want it, that's what the EC button
is for. It's all in your lovely owner's manual.

I still don't think I fully comprehend the vents, but it seems like the
center vents (not the defroster vents) are only supposed to blow AC.

Exactly, though they will blow vent air as well, just not heated air.
Refrigerated air is not supposed to come up the defroster vents unless
the next-to-defrost button is pushed. (Useful in very warm and humid
conditions, I've had to use it once or twice.) If you have lost vacuum
to the ACC system it will revert to defrost. Or the pod that shuts off
the defrost flaps could be broken. Or the pod that runs some other
flaps could be leaking, sapping vacuum when it tries to operate and
allowing the defrost flaps to open. These are great fun to diagnose
and repair.

it seems to be on all the time even around 26C or so and the air turns
warmish.

also as the dialled in temp approaches it directs most air from centre
vents to the windscreen .is that normal?

I had a little time this afternoon, So I tried putting the waterpump
on. Did ok. Maybe a little over an hour to get the front end of the
engine back together. Passed leak test

Here is the problem: I can't remember the serp belt routing. I know I
saw

it on a job on the cd but it was illegible. Does anyone have a picture of
a good diagram from job 1350 or 1351? I can't get either of those to come
up on braingears.

[MBZ] 126 front supension bushes

2006-05-10 Thread M.Afzaal Khan

Hi All
i have replaced the front suspension bushes and all the other joints etc on
the front suspension plus the four new boge shocks. suspension nuts
torqued on the ground position
the ride seems overly firm as if the tyres are over inflated, every little
road bump is firmly dealt and felt .

the old bushes offered a soft compiant ride.
will it settle down to a softer level?

Will really worn out shocks cause the rear end of a 126 to sag and have
the wheels slightly tilted toward the center at the top(like when car
pushed down) or should I look for something else? Shocks are REALLY bad
on this car for starters. Has 160k miles.
