I have heard about 2-3 flaring, not sure if that's the
same as hanging, being fixed by replacing the K1
spring. I will be replacing that on my SD this
spring. Got the kit from Rusty for ~$15. May want to
check with him if the SL trans. has similar innards.

 not tell him the
cracked subframe would be replaced by MB, wanted $2k
 for the
 job.sigh). $2500 for a new tranny installed.
 So buddy calls Rusty
who has a rebuilt unit for $1600, a few hundred for
 someone to replace
it is the guess. I told him to hold off on that for
 now.

Anyway, tomorrow I am going to do a fluid/filter
 change for him and see
what that does. I checked the downshift switch, the
 carpet was over it,
binding it, and got that rearranged (thanks for that
 suggestion) but did
 not fix the shift problem.

/*Question? */-- on my diesel I read of the B2

could that be the problem? Is there anything else,
 short of a new
tranny, that could cause the 2-3 shift hanging?
 Something more easily
 fixed?

My buddy has the wherewithal to address the problem
 with his checkbook,
but being the CFB I am I have an issue with him
 doing that. Plus if I
fix it easy and cheap my supply of free lunches at

when i do my taxes each year, i look at my auto expenses and get a very clear
picture of how economical my sdl has been...about $4700 purchase price three or
four years ago and easily less than $1000 into it/year for repairs...i cannot
get a better ride for the money, and the big sedan is a dream on long

I often think about whether or not all the time and effort we put
into these cars is worth it. There surely is no money to made by
buying and selling them unless the price is ridiculously low at the
time of purchase. I don't collect them I do drive them and will never
 purchase a new car.
I have made money disassembling them and selling the parts. For some
(myself included) it is a hobby and I at least save money and get my
money's worth out of each and every one of them.
I have way too many cars right now and will be thinning out the herd

It's a hobby and passion. I've only owned one for 2 years, but I've fallen in
love with working on it. Besides, when you DIY, it's MUCH cheaper than
payments and way more reliable than 98% of cars on the road.

I'm cheap too, but selectively so. Otherwise, I'd still be driving my 1969
Plymouth Valiant. Sure, it's a little aggravating to replace the plastic
headrest gear on my S350, but I really like having a headrest that goes up
and down at the touch of a switch. You can buy an entire Plymouth for the
cost of a Mercedes blower motor. Of course the Plymouth did not have AC to

I know I could haul out a manual or something, but I thought many or most of
y'all would know the answer to my
question and I like things that are easy.

Where, do I look on the engine in my 76 300D for the number on the engine? I
plan to order some stuff from Rusty
and one of the items wanted the engine number which I did not have at my finger
tips. I popped the hood last night
but did not see anything obvious on the block.

Marshall, that's the kind of definitive answer I've been looking for.
Thanks.

With 5.5 in your AT it should be *very* close to the lower end of
 the

I assume you got your leak solved? ;-)

You must fill in about 3-4 liters, run the engine to pump fluid into the
torque converter (filling in all 6 at once will usually cause the pan to
overflow - it can't hold 6 qt - the torque converter MUST hold several
qt of the fluid), fill in all but abut a pint of the rest of the fluid
and then drive the car for 15-20 minutes before trying to measure/adjust
the level. The car must be level to read the ATF level and the engine
should be running so the torque converter is being filled (even if it's
check valve is leaking - often happens on cars that are 15+ years old).
When you're all done, the level should be at the top mark. Next morning
after you first start the car (but the fluid is still cool) the fluid
will be 10 mm below the lower mark (with a 722.3/.4 transmissions and
 even lower with earlier transmissions).

any way to solve this?...maybe start by taping over the top hatch in order to

BTW, it's OK for some of us to like 'em and others to not like 'em. That's
why we have different names. One is no more RIGHT than the other.

[MBZ] tranny bumps

2006-03-07 Thread jjayj

my '86 300sdl is running great, especially now that all four tires match...but
the tranny acted up the other day and i'm looking for ideas...

it ran very well for 200 miles at highway speeds, then when we pulled off,
stopped, and tried to start up, it hesitated(rpm's went up) and then thunked
into gear...

then the next time after 6 hours of highway driving, stopped, and wouldn't go
(just rpm's rising) in drive and 3rd...but it would take off in 2nd and then
everything worked...so i ck'd the fluid and added about a cup...all things
working again, almost

while pushing hard on accelerator, everything works smooth and goes up thru the
gears...but as i coast in town, sometimes it shifts down with a bit of a bump
or thump...and likewise if i add pressure on the accelerator a bit...seems not
as smooth as it should be...

any ideas?

thanx

Roll oversteer means that the rear end will steer into the turn as
the body leans over. What this does is limit the speed at which the
car will corner as the back end starts to come around. This
incidentally unloads the OUTSIDE tire (the one taking most of the load
in this case) by reducing the slip angle -- and the tightness of the
turn. Since the front end sway bar is pretty heavy, this will also
lift the inside rear corner, and can even lift the inside front tire,
all with the intended consequence of making the driver slow down! The
jacking sensation at the rear is a warning you are approaching the
handling limit of the car, with plenty of time.

End result is that the W123 won't corner was well as the W115/114 at
the same speed, but you won't blow the outside tire off the rim, either
-- needless to say, THAT will reduce handling to near zero!. W115/114
chassis cars handle FLAT, very little body roll, quite nice, but I've
both been warned about the tire unmount and talked to people it
happened to -- lucky, there were no trees when he ran off the road.

Roll oversteer is very easy for the driver to feel and to compensate
for (lift the accelerator, for instance), and the car remains stable
and in control. Benz may have overdone it in the W123, but after all,
these are really luxury rides, not sports cars.

The W124 does indeed handle better (by the numbers generated), but is
somewhat less forgiving. Overdrive it hard enough and the rear end
loses traction before the front does, and it goes end for end with
nowhere near as much warning as the W123. It also is harder to get
back under control when this happens, too -- less margin for error.

first you have to take the door apart. Whomever decided to change how
the door goes together should be shot. Anybody go a light tan W201
driver's side door inside? I broke all the clips but 2. Every other
door I've ever had off pulled out.

The newer the design, the less easy it is to take it apart without
breaking it. 124, 126, and 201 doors are hard.

The suspension on the W126 is pretty much identical to that on the
W123. Check guide rods (if it groans on speed bumps or clunks going
into reverse they are bad), rear sway bar links, front sway bar at the
upper control arm, and for loose control arm bushings. I would guess
the rear sway bar, but that is only a guess. A bad shock up front will
cause it to feel like it's diving -- a bad sway bar will affect both
sides, not just one.

for about five years i used an old orange lawnmower that came with the house i
bought...not much too it, but i didn't need much...start it up and mow...do it
over, and over, and put it away for the winter

about the third year, it began clunking and thunking at low rpm's, but that
rascal still cut grass!

the deck was rusty and now and then it would make a great thunking sound and
occassionally something would fly off...litterally...but it kept running, and
mowing

i think year four saw the end of the muffler...and when i'd shut it down, i'd
move away a bit because something was way out of balance and would shake the
thing to a stop as the rpm's fell...and it still cut grass...

the last season had become a challange, and a matter of neighborhood pride...it
was me and my mower against all the rest of the toros and snappers and their
owners...there were wagers concerning longevity, and cold beer was on the
line...and the mower kept mowing...

but, alas, one day in the middle of the lawn, something near the top of the
engine broke and went straight up...'bout the size of a salad plate...a very
loud and short kathurk!! sounded, and it was over...done...no mowre...

 I had a 1978 Oldsmobile Delta 88 - my first car. I had 160,000 miles
when I got it. It had been my brother's car. I bought it from him for
$100. When I bought it, we went to Jiffy Lube and he introduced me to
the guys there. See, my brother had been going there every three days
to have them add oil. Jiffy lube used to guarantee to keep the fluids
filled for 3000 miles. So, he would pull in they all waved and they
would top off the oil (usually a quart). Well, in the time that I had
it I had to start going every 2 days, then every day. Towards the end
of its life, it was going through a quart of oil and a pint of power
steering fluid every day. The guys at jiffy lube were always very
friendly, I think they thought it was funny. They would smile and laugh.
Well, I was 16 and stupid and this was not a powerful car. It had the
260 V8 (totally gutless) and I drove it like an idiot. I decided to
take it on a trip to New Orleans. I bought new tires flushed the
coolant and even had the Freon topped off (this was when you could buy
R12 for a couple of bucks a can. I started on my trip. Sixty-seven
miles down the highway, I was trying to climb an extremely steep hill in
the Ozark mountains and was really pushing it hard. I downshifted to
get more power, it climbed and boom, the upper radiator hose blew up. I
got pulled over and a trucker drove past recognized the huge cloud of
steam and gave me a ride a few miles down the road to a gas/service
station. I bought the new hose and a gallon of coolant and got a gallon
of water. I walked back and changed out the house. I drove it on down
to the gas station to ask the guy if I had done it right. He came out,
looked at me, looked at the car and said

Boy, you ain't asked my advice, but if I was you, I would drive back
home and park the son of a bitch. Well, I took his advice. I drove
back home, stopping every 10 minutes because it was overheating. I had
blown a head gasket I learned later. Anyway, I knew this car was done.
About 15 minutes from home still on the highway, I was pushing it pretty
hard, knowing that this car was headed for the junkyard. As I am
climbing a hill (I can hear it knocking), I hear one last knock and then
a loud bang and a cloud of black oil hits the windshield and the engine
was toast. I ended up towing it with my church van and a rope straight
to my Uncles car lot. He gave $200 took off the trailer hitch and the
brand new tires and had the old car towed off for scrap.

This is only half the story for the this car. It was the most
interesting car, I have ever had.

Performance sells the HELLA Euro Halogene headlamps (7 sealed beam)
 for $53.95 EA.

I bought a set of these for the Chicken Wagon. (Though I've yet
to actually put them in.) This is the approach I took with the
450 SL. You get the improved lighting pattern and the ability
to do the relay/laser thing, but the cosmetics remain unchanged.
It's usually much cheaper than the Euro light assemblies, and
in the case of the 107/116 (and the 123 if you're willing to
do away with the fog lights) _better_ in that you retain the
four-bulb configuration. Mmmm, high beam lasers!

2006-01-15 Thread jjayj
good morning...just spoke with the state patrol office and was told:

1.if the car has a current tag, nothing more needed unless purchased as a wreck

2. insurance is technically required, but it depends on the trooper who stops
you if this is inforced on the drive home (bill of sale and proximity to the
story being told very important)

Even if the plates stay with the car, best to take care of temp
registration for your own protection, if the PO has a stack of parking
tickets or worse on that tag, you'll be taking an unscheduled vacation.

i am finally the proud former owner of a disaster ebay car (got my wallet

have returned without it...by the time the car was shipped, the 30 day bummer

hitch. It was a great experience and a wonderful seller, with no

That's a big universal kit. For K-jet, you just need something
you can put in the control circuit with a gauge and a shutoff
valve. With the valve open, you read control pressure. With
the valve shut, control pressure rises to match system pressure
and you see what the regulator is set for.

if you push your SDL, you can get worse mileage...in out most recent run to
mexico, 75mph or under gave us 27mpg...85-90 gave 23...at sustained 105, we got
19mpg...pretty easy math, and the differences were well worth the expense...

'86 SDL, 225,000 miles

-- Original message --
From: Jim Cathey [EMAIL PROTECTED]

  300SDL ~ 24-26MPG (mine - 50/50 highway city).

Ours turns in a very reliable 27MPG lifetime-type average. With
my wife and I both filling it up, sometimes one will calculate 25
but the next might be 29. (She doesn't like waiting for the foam
to settle.) We have gotten 30 maybe once a year or so.

So far I'm still on my first tank of fuel in the Frankenheap
(115 200D), and it's from March. At 300 miles it was just reading
a hair over half full, so it's doing a bit better than before if
the gauge can be trusted. So far its best has been 32 MPG, and
each tank has been better than the one before.

It takes awhile to empty a tank when you don't have a job to go to!

by thinned wvo, do you mean mixed with diesel that's in the tank? and how does
it work in the cold?

Yes, but to be safe, carry an extra fuel filter and tools to swap it
 just in case.
We've gone 3 years and over 40K miles on thinned WVO in my wife's 99
E300 without changing the fuel filter, but I am quite anal-retentive
about filtering the oil. With a positive pressure system you can
 easily go 1 micron.

I think if you want an older Jeep with amazing off road performance, you
should look at a Wagoneer. I know people either love them or hate them.
They are amazing off roaders. When I had mine I would roam the trails,
streams, mudpits, woods, etc and never got stuck. More than a few times
I had to use the Wagoneer to pull other people's 4X4's out. The old
quadra track (with granny low) never failed me. The clearance is not as
good as the other jeeps, so large rock hopping is not really possible.
I did see a guy with a Wagoneer who put a big lift kit on it and
modified it and he could climb anything.

Careful, now. The 914 body was built by Karmann. And if it was a six all
the
mechanicals were installed at Porsche Zuffenhausen.

Oh, WELL, then! Shurely if the hands of a Porsche worker touched a whole ten
bolts, it was a *real* Porch!

Well, now Stevie, if the engine, trans, complete suspension, brakes and
wheels, steering column and instruments and more were mounted with only twelve
bolts, I'd call that a breakthrough, wouldn't you?

What with owning a 914-6 for thirteen years, I know for sure that it was at
least fifteen bolts.

A few truths, for those who have ears and eyes and care to know the truth:

1.) The hurricane that hit New Orleans and Mississippi and Alabama
was an astonishing tragedy. The suffering and loss of life and
peace of mind of the residents of those areas is acutely horrifying.

2.) George Bush did not cause the hurricane. Hurricanes have been
happening for eons. George Bush did not create them or unleash this
  one.

Re: [MBZ] Seat motor question

2005-08-09 Thread jjayj
thanks bob...did that yesterday...switch will move motor one way, blows fuse
the other...the switch is a replacement from the boneyard...i was just told
that the controls can be found behind the seat back...if i can energize the
motor, i'll get it into position and take the fuse out untill i find the bad
wire...

on the other hand, if the switch is bad, how can i operate the seat from the
two wires that plug into the seat? give one 12v and the other a ground? then
reverse?

 JJJ,
I could be wrong , but I don't think so. It is a DC motor so if it
worked to recline the seat the switch simply reverses polarity to make
it go forward. This is almost certainly related to the switch. Hose
out the switch contacts with some contact cleaner or brake clean
while you opperate the switch. have a couple rags handy to dab up the
 run off.

Re: [MBZ] Theory vs Practice

2005-06-29 Thread jjayj
hey hank...interesting math, but i didn't go anywhere near mexico city or high
elevations...the cruise along the west coast of mexico (not baja) is
essentially along the coastal lowlands...so it was mostly attitude (not
altitude) and which music in the player that influenced speed and therefore
mileage.

Drag (air resistance) is approx. proportional to the speed squared and
inversely proportional to air density. Driving from Arizona to Mexico City
is uphill just about all the way with southern AZ at 1000' elev. and Mexico
City at 7300'. You had several variables to influence your mpg, speed,
 altitude, and grade.
Last spring I got 31mpg going from Albuquerque 5300' elev. to Farmington NM
5600' elev. at 75+ mph with a few 7000' passes.
I've never gotten that good an mpg at lower elevations and I'm starting to
think I had less drag because of the thinner air due to evel. and cooler
 temp.
Prior to this I thought Chevron diesel had more BTUs and I think it may. In
Tulsa I also experience better mpg using Phillips vs Texaco diesel.
