Re: [MBZ] espresso machine vibrator

2015-02-16 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Took a quick look at my Omre machine yesterday. It has a two section tubular
electrolytic that drives the pump. It's strapped to the side of the case, so I
couldn't see the value of the cap.

Mine seems to work fine from what I can tell, so I'm not in any hurry to mess
with it. I may get bold and loosen the clamp on the cap so I can slide it out a
bit and get the values off of it some day. I expect I can get a replacement
from DigiKey or Mouser without too much effort.

My pump looks brand new, and the inside of the machine appears to be the same,
so I have no reason to believe the pump is cruddy inside.

My previous response to this okiebenz message went to Dan, not the
list, by mistake. I think there are some electronic design wizards
here that can answer the current problem with the machine we each are
using. This is a vibratory pump in a 40 year old espresso machine
made in italy but wired for 110v. I think we can muster a picture of
the control knob if needed, plus maybe a picture of wiring. There is
a unique feature in this espresso machine - the speed of the pump can
be varied using rheostat control knob. 12 o'clock is silent pump.
Turn clockwise (cw) and the pump speeds up water thru thermoblock for
shots. Turn counter clockwise (ccw) and the pump is used to produce
steam for foamed milk. cw turn speeds pump goes from - to + as
noted on the control. ccw control goes from - to + to denote
amount of steam? However, steam production is not ideal so we are
wondering if old caps or other electro-gizmo might be old after 40
years. Perhaps the rheostat needs a spray of DeOxit? What else in
this type of electric control can go bad in years of very light
 service?

Dan, perhaps we need to read the instructions?

Below is my description to Dan yesterday about what I am seeing -
Dan's notes above show he is in approximately the same quandry (choppy
vibe pump noise) about producing steam. As noted, most espresso
machines do not have a control that varies the pump speed.

Re: [MBZ] Espresso machine

2014-11-28 Thread Rick Hawkins Java via Mercedes
Folks

I'm not much of a grinder man.

When i used to sell a lot of coffee, in the 70's on into the late 90's we
always served Cafe Bustello. Turn up your nose at it all you want, but it will
make you a good cup of espresso or cappuccino. I generally drink cappuccino and
am drinking one as a type.

I went to a barista contest in Athens 3 or 4 years ago. Baristas from a bunch
of local shops (and i) met and all made coffees. It ended up being more of a
discussion than contest, but we all pulled shots and made cappuccinos and just
ended up talking about the various coffees. After initial disdain …. several
were serving locally roasted products …. and after trying the Bustello, it was
mostly thought to be a good cup of coffee.

If you want a grinder, only burr grinders are considered the way to go. I get
cheap ones all the time, but never use them.

Here's one that a friend gave me last week. He said it worked fine and he used
it for several years. He replaced it with something similar.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/STARBUCKS-BURR-GRINDER-BUON-CAFFE-MODEL-380-COFFEE-GRINDER-SWISS-/201221582733?ssPageName=STRK:MESE:IT

You can sometimes find $20 or $30 new burr grinders on amazon or ebay

if i wanted a grinder, i'd probably get something like this, but it's a bit of
overkill for the home operation

http://www.ebay.com/itm/La-Pavoni-Commercial-Espresso-Coffee-Grinder-RED-TESTED-GOOD-/121449696454?pt=BI_Hot_Beverage_Brewershash=item1c46f74cc6

italian, swiss, etc

i don't know where the prices fall …. probably best to get one that you can
locate new burrs for BEFORE you buy

This sounds like fun for me - I get to watch Martha tweak a machine

for picture underneath - it is vibe pump like mine. The vintage
rotary pump seems nice but it is huge and usually gunked up as seen at
the HB forum link. Steaming milk... the pump seems a bit wonky, so I
am interested to hear how your pump works for steam.

Maybe Rick can tell us what machines he is selling? Perhaps you have
a grinder for Dan to look at? I saw this ebay listing and wondered if
it was Rick's stuff? - good looking! and in Alabama, although Rick is
 in GA?

It is good that you know that a grinder is critical. fwiw this is the

Alex gave me this link to grinders listed at ebay.it:
 http://www.ebay.it/sch/sis.html?_nkw=Macina%20caffe%20espresso%20coffee%20grinder%20QUICK%20MILL%20OMRE_itemId=260923266272#ht_499wt_901
So I go there every so often to see what is being sold.
He also gave me this link:
 www.ricardo.ch/search/search.asp?txtSearch=kaffeemühle
I probably paid more for shipping than the grinder, I forget.
Scour ebay and craigslist - a decent grinder does not seem easy to
find, but I am pleased with my vintage quickmill 43mm flat burr
 machine.

Tell us about grinders, Mr. Java (Rick).

Re: [MBZ] Espresso machine

2014-11-28 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes

It's not espresso, but last night our Keurig broke. Its handle had
been getting kind of sticky for a year or so. (I don't use it, I
don't drink coffee.) Last night a piece of plastic broke off.

Today I took it apart, and found that the only problem was that
some scale had built up on the cam track on the bucket, and the
plastic pin that slides in it snapped off. Oh dear.

Fortunately the first machine we had bought had gone insane
shortly after we got it. One phone call and they sent us a
new one, I never even had to prove that I even _owned_ the
machine in question. (Methinks mine was not the first such
call they had received!)

_Anyway_, I raided it for parts, and now it's working smoothly
again. I've checked the new ones in stores, and none of them
feel like they've half the mechanical build quality of the
one we have. It has a metal handle, not a plated plastic
handle. I'm happy to have put it back on the road, as it
were.

There was quite the row earlier this year over Keurig coming out with a new
design of the little plastic cups that would have an RFID chip or something in
them that would prevent people from using non-Keurig cups in their machines.

I suspect this was a response to the third party stuff on the market for their
current machines as well as the refillable ones you can buy and fill with your
own coffee.

We had a vending machine at my former office that dispensed those cups. $1.00
for a cup of coffee!!

There are reusable filters for use with keurig machines, compost the grounds

Overall a French press makes much better coffee for less cost, fewer

Agreed. We have one, it doesn't get used. The K machine does
get used, people seem to like it. (I drink tea, not coffee, I
basically don't use it. The hot water it will dispense is coffee-
