Re: [MBZ] OM603 revival
Bravo! Fuel leak: I'll bet the leak is the bigger clear plastic line off the back of the IP, which is discharge from the lift pump that goes to the big fuel filter. Those lines age, turn yellow, get brittle. If it got any pressure, it probably cracked. I'd say pull the manifold, as painful as that is, and then you'll have a clear view. -- Max Dillon Charleston SC '87 300TD '95 E300 On December 24, 2018 12:04:16 PM EST, Tim Crone via Mercedes wrote: >On Sun, Oct 28, 2018, 8:04 PM Curley McLain via Mercedes < >mercedes@okiebenz.com wrote: > >> BEST THING TO DO IS TO TAKE THE SIDE COVER OFF THE IP, >> > >You were right as usual, thanks! If not, the rack may be stuck/rusted. You will probably be able to see some rust, if that is the problem. If the lever doed not wiggle the rack at all, try to see if you can move it a thousandth or 2 (or 5) manually, with a finger or screwdriver, but DON"T force it! Next step would be to hook a hose to the vacuum shutoff and suck (or alternately; suck then blow) on it, and see it that wiggles the lever at all. If not, remove the vacuum actuator, then see if the rack advances when the footfeed is floored. One extremely odd thing that happened is a broken governor that slammed the rack to the off position, but that happened as soon as the car started. I don't think that is the case here, because the shutoff lever is stuck down, but the point is, sometimes unheard of things happen.Max Dillon via Mercedes wrote:> Jack& Tim;>> Gentle pressure on the stop lever is fine, but I wouldn't get too aggressive. Thanks Jim! We'll give it a go. Should I be worried about breaking off the stop lever? Jack (son in question) just subscribed to the list also, hi Jack! [MBZ] OM603 revival
Hi folks, Hope you are all doing well! My eldest has fixed the freeze plug using a pair of cold chisels and a bit of steel pipe on the 300SDL's 603, so now we need to button up the engine. However: 1) the intake manifold has been off for a long time (5 years?) and probably had water, dirt, bugs around. Son vacuumed out and ran a rag around the air intakes in the block. Do we need to make sure they are spotless, or is lack of obvious contamination enough? Suggestions for more effective cleaning methods? 2) the stop lever is stuck down. Maybe it is just seized, but I may also have smashed it down while removing the intake. Did I break something in the IP, or the lever itself? Should I try to cajole it up? 3) I recall to turn the engine over a few times by hand, once everything is assembled. Given the stop lever I will also keep a 2x4 handy and make sure fuel is at the injectors. Anything else? It's nice to be behind a wrench again, even if only by proxy! Thanks for any advice! -Tim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
