sourcing parts, I would expect. They were pretty analog at that time.

Dad had a few stories about stuff that happened in GM plants, but it wasn’t
first hand so it’s tough to know if it was true or just anecdotal.

I once worked with an older guy in the 80s who worked on the line at Studebaker
before they shut down. He told stories of how after it was announced that they
were closing there were guys on the line who were taking dumps in the doors
before they finished them.

Toyota is a big player in Trophy truck racing. Big output engines, huge travel
suspension, off-road at highway speeds...
I didn't like the Tacoma when we drove them before buying our Dodge. The swiss
cheese frame debacle awhile ago didn't impress me either. That said there is a
reason the Hilux is the default pickup in the rest of the world. Outside of
North America you never see an F150...

As I recall, it was.

While the Córdoba was probably the pinnacle of crappy Detroit iron of time, it

I have a friend who had a 67 galaxie when I met him.   I believe his
parents bought it new.  He got over 300 k with it.  He replaces each
frod with another.  Each one got over 300k.  BTW he was an A when I
met him, working on a degree in Aero E.   Since he gradgitated, he has
worked for a major aircraft mfgr.   He takes fastidious car of each car,
as Manfred does.

We thought it was a big deal when the 65 chevey got to 250k back in 1972
or so.   300k on a domestic car was unheard of back then, but he did it.

Now the shovey was a used one.   Most used cars had the odo rolled back
in those days.   Who knows if this one did or didn't.   But care and
type of driving make a bigger difference than brand, or name or engine.

Kinda majik how domestic cars that rarely made it to 200k routinely go
250k to 350k as soon as carfax and such made hiding the odo rollback
difficult.   But the 6 cyl engines GM made in the mid 60s were crap, as
the bigwigs were trying to kill off the 6 cyl.

right but you don't know what was done to it or

Re: [MBZ] Toyota Hilux?

2019-10-15 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
My point precisely. If you think the Grand Canyon is forbidding, remote or
unimproved, you need to recalibrate your definitions of those terms. If a
bunch of Bedouin with no formal mechanical training can run these things in
the open desert, to the near exclusion of any other sort of vehicle at all,
for decades, it speaks volumes about the efficiency, reliability and
repairability of said trucks. Not to mention that they are lightweight and
easy to get unstuck with a sand ladder or two. They are basically a Willys
jeep without 4wd, only better. Parts are literally everywhere. The
Datsun/Nissan equivalent is also a fine vehicle.

Re: [MBZ] Toyota Hilux?

2019-10-15 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I gave some serious thought to an xB when they first came out, but the dealers
wouldn’t deal on them because of the demand. I figured it would be a good cheep
commuter car. Only thing I didn’t care for was the dash and parts of the
interior were really cheap and plasticky.

My next door neighbor traded his Taco a year or two ago when the dealer wanted
to replace the transmission on it. I'm not sure how well maintained it was, but
it was dealer serviced, not driven much, and until the last two years of its
life the neighbor's fastidious ex boyfriend had a hand in the maintenance of
vehicles and lawn equipment. I can't imagine a trans service being skipped when
he was around. Unfortunately the guy didn't fit in a 2018 Taco, so he had to
buy a Tundra this time around (he buys only Toyota/Scion and has way over 200k
on his xB, but he's still unhappy about the Taco letting him down)

My wife has driven an 03 4cyl 2wd Tacoma since new. Like she stole it
(80 mph +). $22K for a 4 door 2wd with a lid on the bed.

Had oil changes every 5000mi. Repairs you ask? One COP and the rear
wheel bearings at 290K. Replaced the belts and hoses twice just
because. That's it!!! Has any of your cars needed so little?

Show me any of your Mercedes or mine that have had so little work
needed done to them over 330K miles which is what it has on it. Still
doesn't leak or burn oil.

Hell! I put more than that into my 83 Mercedes to get it up to not
even near that good a condition.

Get one of them and run it and see how good it is before you run them
down on the say so of idiots that use a vehicle without any
maintenance done to it and expect it to last a million miles without
an oil change.

Buy whatever 4wd that meets your needs that the region is dripping with, but

Re: [MBZ] Toyota Hilux?

2019-10-15 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
He might find it a fair bit easier to find a 4Runner which would be
about the same in running gear. I had a 95 which is the 2nd generation
and apart from rusting, it was fairly decent. The 3rd generation has
more power, and more interior space. If he can find one in AZ that might
avoid the rust issues.

I had a 70 Hilux back in about 74 and sold it in 75. It was a neat
little truck but had a very small cab. Not much legroom.

Back around 1970, J I Case had a proving ground near their backhoe and
bulldozer plant at Burlington.  One of the guys who worked there drove a
220Sb.  The employees would have offroad races around the place.  Think
motocross in a car.    The 220Sb won almost all the time, according to
what he told me.   220Sb won the Argentine grand prix, (which is pretty
much offroad) in the 60s.

My 190Dc was far better on crappy pothole/washboard tracks than any
merkun car or truck.

If he could fix it himself, a ML is probably as good a choice as any.
But if someone else has to work on it, then you are on the right track, Dan

He’s been in the pickup truck mode for a while, but balks at considering
anything domestic for some unknown reason. As I’ve mentioned before, a decent
used domestic truck like a Ford, Chevy or Dodge would be ideal, as there would
be no problem at all finding support for them in such a remote area.

I’ve planted the seed several times, but I’m still waiting for it to sprout. I
suspect it will at some point in the future. Hopefully sooner than later.

Re: [MBZ] Toyota Hilux?

2019-10-15 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
This time it was an aesthetics and functionality thing. He likes the simplicity
and the styling of the W124, but thinks he can off road with 4Matic.

I suggested a W210 4Matic, as they’re far more common, less expensive, and more
reliable and easier to maintain. I pointed out that the original 4Matics were
troublesome and prone to leakage.

But hey, what do I know, right?

I hauled a lot of construction materials (including 80BF of dirty rough sawn
cherry) in my mint interior 1999 4matic.
Interior was far from mint after I had it a month.
Only real problems I ever had with that car were dead fuel pump (inline and
easy to swap), rusty brake lines, and HVAC gremlins.
But 124 4Matic is an entirely different can of worms.

Thanks, Mitch. I messaged the link to him. I’m guessing he won’t follow up on
it, there may already be a new “flavor of the week” at this point, haven’t
heard.

At least I was able to talk him out of a W124 wagon with 4Matic. He had some
idea that it would be a good alternative to a 4WD pickup truck.

suppose the US market pickups got different engine and trim and

Mock up a fake .50, get a black flag, and wrap black t-shirts around your head,

far I have no doubt. However, he goes through these spurts of “enlightenment”,
shall we say, when my intellect sort of just goes out the window in his mind.
It’s not uncommon for him to come back in a bit and acknowledge his
mistake/ignorance, and when he does I don’t make a big deal out of it. It’s
more important to me that they be introspective. Being able to come back and
admit you’re wrong or made a poor decision is far more important, I think.

It’s funny, I find myself having exactly the opposite problem with my
father in the last every years. He doesn’t give my suggestions any weight,
but if a complete stranger makes the same suggestion then he calls to tell
me about it.

Best recent example is his purchase of a sports car. For a few years, he’s
been looking for a old British or Italian car. We looked at a few but
nothing really appealed to him. I suggested he look at Porsche Boxsters or
Mazda Miatas, as these are the modern interpretations of those old sports
cars. He didn’t give it much weight until we went to see a 79 Alfa
Spider. He owned one in the early 80s... but realized how 40 years has
aged him and the car, and it wasn’t what he wanted. The seller told him he
was selling to buy a Boxster. This made a big impression.

On the way home, he became very interested in a Boxster and within two
weeks he bought one. And he loves it.

I told you so?

Anyway... I think your day will come... it will happen to all of us
hopefully: our children will know better than we do.

True satisfaction as a parent is when you hold your grandchild, notice
"that smell" that only emanates from a "blow out the sides dirty diaper"
and hand the child to the formerly rebellious child, saying, with a smile,
"your child needs changing"
"I'm the grand parent, I only hug them, I don't have to change them.".. ;)))

On the subject of truck... here is a video of one that needs a bit of work
and I'm pretty sure it hasn't been moved lately Recovery might pose a
"challenge" if he is up for a "real challenge"... but the price should be
low..

She knew better than us about everything, including raising kids (we raised

Probably, as the same platform was used for the trucks they sold here. That’s
why I’m not shy a HiLux is even relevant. The trucks they sold here under
different model names are nearly the same.

More importantly, if he ends up staying out west permanently as he plans,
having anything but a domestic car/truck in a remote area is not a wise
decision. It would be like driving a Benz out there. No MB mechanics anywhere
near the Grand Canyon….

He could book a trip to one of the garden spots in the ME and he could
probably pick one up cheap with the proper, uh, negotiating techniques.
then ship it back

I know. I have informed both children that when the day comes that they realize
Mom and I were “right” that they need to immediately contact us in order to
allow us to revel in the satisfaction of being validated.

It will happen. It’s just a matter of when.

And yes, I attempted to point out that the HiLux was never sold here in the
same manner in which it is available in the rest of the world.

Plant the seed. Sometimes more than once.   Give it a gestation period.
Min. is a month, normally a year or more.   At the end of the gestation
period, it is HIS idea, and therefore G O O D!

Don't keep replanting the same seed.   If you do it never becomes G O O D.

I guess they still sell hilux peekups  in turd world countries, or did
until a few years ago.

No doubt.

He’s so all over the place I have no idea. He’s heading back out to AZ and the
NPS the end of this month, so I suspect he’s got truck/4WD on the brain. I
suggested some time ago when this was a subject that a good used Ford F150
would be a wise purchase and serve him well while being something easily
maintained in such a rural area.

As a parent, I am a total idiot, of course (implied) so my recommendations are
tossed aside unless they’re later adopted and presented as a new idea. After
all, what do I know?
