When pounding my fist on the dash would no longer bring back the gauge in my 1980 Citation, I just started filling it every 300 miles. No trip meter, so I had to gas it up at 207200, 207500, erc. It worked for me for the last couple of years of the car's life until the transmission broke a shift fork and the car wasn't worth a $70 part, let alone a weekend's work to replace it. You could just fill it every time it drops to empty - you'd never run out, since you'd have about half a tank. I fiddled with the 190D a little today. I pulled the fuel tank sender again since it was showing empty. It appears it reads correct till it gets to half way then drops all the way down. I do no really know what else to do with it. I tried the other one and it reads empty all the time no matter where the float is. I guess my only thing left to do is find a good used one or buy a new one. Today I pulled the instrument cluster because the PO had replaced the fuel temp oil gauge with one out of a gasser, so I put the correct one in. Took car to town to fill it up with fresh diesel and to see if fuel gauge works, it doesn't. I guess I need to pull the sending unit and clean it. The cruise control appears to be completely dead again. I double checked to make sure I got the plug back on the speed sensor on the back of the cluster, and I did so I brought the amp back in the house and will redo all of the solder. --- This email has been checked for viruses by AVG. https://www.avg.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Stopped and got a bottle of Power Service (white bottle) on the way home from work, put 16oz (it calls for 8oz per 25 gal of fuel) in the tank and cranked 'er. It started momentarily and died. Further cranking produced a few pops but nothing exciting. Swapped the canister fuel filter, primed it with Power Service. Couple pops and now nothing, it cranks and cranks but no pops, its not even trying to start. The old fuel filter had normal looking fuel in it, no thickening or ice that I could see. On the way home I picked up a drop light with a 75w bulb, I've got that under the hood now with the battery charger, I don't want the battery to go flat and freeze. The engine is warm, radiator hoses are warm to the touch from the block heater being on all day. If its a fuel thing its got to be trouble in the tank. I'm going to let it warm up with the bulb for a little while, if it won't start after my next attempt I'll have it hauled to my Indy tomorrow. A night in his warm garage may make the difference. As may the sloshing around with the Power Service in the tank. -Curt ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

As a diagnostic, you could try sticking the feed hose to the small fuel filter into a small container of known-good clean fuel. If your car has one, pump the manual priming pump to purge any air and then try to start it. Is there a chance you have an air leak, especially upstream of the lift pump? Dieselhead wrote: I was hoping you had a heated garage, or at least a garage to do that in. I debated cleaning out the garage, but when I started the project, it wasn't too bad outside, and the car was dripping the liter of fresh fluid I'd just put in to placate the Hydraulic Oil Level warning light. I decided it was easier to keep the mess outdoors, didn't realize how long it was going to take me to fix it. The steering has a minor leak, and although I added most of a liter in September and shouldn't be due for several more months, I just assumed it was the usual when the light came on. I was in a hurry to go buy a $50 generator that had been on CL for less than an hour, so I threw in one of my two spare liters without bothering to investigate first, and the light was on again before I hit the end of the driveway. The punch line is that the car is now fixed, but I lost a 1/4 L testing it after I replaced the first line, and the remaining 3/4 liter wasn't enough to make the light stay out, so now I'm driving the underAchieva while waiting for a California shipment of fluid to come probably next week. I cleaned all the (Nippondenso) compressor parts in the solvent tank. That was tedious, and cold! (I didn't plug in the tank heater, probably I should have.) Everything cleaned up well. I saw no scoring of the cylinders or pistons. The swash plate had marks where the piston glide buttons had sat, perhaps corrosion was setting up? It came off with a bit of worn 600-grit wet-and-dry sandpaper. That revealed that there was only one small score arc in one face of the swash plate, which I burnished down. I think it will be OK. Everything cleaned up pretty well, in fact. The thrust bearings roll smoothly. There was some black smudge on a lot of places such as the piston and valve faces, but it rubbed off. 'Black death'? Didn't seem too deadly to me, it could have just been decomposed oil residue. Looks to me like the compressor siezed up quickly enough that it didn't damage itself. The car's belt-saver circuit may have helped. At the moment I see no reason not to reassemble and use this compressor. I should have a new seal kit for it, but I don't. Next time! I'll reassemble the compressor body first before cleaning the exterior clutch parts. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com -- No virus found in this incoming message. Re: [MBZ] 190D update
What kind of solvent do you use in the solvent tank? I saw a pretty good price on gallons of degreaser at one of the parts stores. Some kind of generic stinky light oil petroleum solvent. Bought a couple of 5-gallon cans of it to fill the tank with. Works infinitely better than the water-based degreaser that HF sells along with the tank, and it keeps the pump from rusting up too. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

That sounds like mineral spirits. Used it years ago. Worked great. Re: [MBZ] 190D update
I'll admit here that I'm not a discerning tire customer, when the big tire discussions on here get going I just sort of glaze over. My 240D had tirestore brand snows for 2 years, it drove fine... These are the level above the standard tirestore onionskins, Continentals I *think* but I'd have to check. We've been driving in pretty much constant water (MA remember, 18+ inches of rain in May alone) and they are alot better than what was there. Also interesting is with the old tires there was a scraping noise in the front end going over big bumps. That doesn't really describe it though, it was more like when you hit a whoop in the road. It was worse with 2 people in the car. The front bumper dips a little at the rear so I though maybe it was the airdam underneith scraping. Interestingly with the new tires I NEVER have heard the noise... So I have no idea. -Curt Date: Sun, 11 Jun 2006 10:23:50 -0400 From: John Berryman [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [MBZ] 190D update To: Mercedes Discussion List Mercedes@okiebenz.com Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; delsp=yes; format=flowed On Jun 10, 2006, at 11:07 AM, Curt Raymond wrote: Oh my wife had new tires put on it and had them nitrogen inflated, I can tell you I definately notice absolutely no difference. I recently put a set of Falken ZE 512 Ziex H-rated on, finally Cathy's 190D Euro. I wanted good rain tires with a good dry bite for her. The car's getting parked for the Winter, so no concern for ice/snow. I have about 2,500mi on them, sadly most in the rain. They are great in the pouring rain on the Interstates and side roads. Dry traction is fantastic. I had 1 bad tie-rod end. So I replaced both tie-rod assys and re- bushed the idler arm. I measured the overall length of both tie-rod assys, then made some adjustments by eye and by feel before bringing to my friends alignment shop. If I didn't see it with my own eyes, I wouldn't have believed that the toe was right on, the RF Camber was off by only 1/4 of a degree on the - side(not enough to be concerned with) and the rear was perfect. The car tracks fine and handles like it's on rails. I paid $207.36 for the tires from www.tiresavings.com and $60.00 for mount and balance at a local service station. I couldn't be happier with the whole deal. Johnny B. I Mac Therefore I am __ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! [MBZ] 190D update
While I feel like typing I thought I'd give an update on my 190D. When I first got it on cold startup it acted sort of odd, it'd start but idle really low for maybe 1/2 second and then come up to normal idle speed. Warm starts were fine. Now after around 7,000 miles 6,000 of that with Mobil 1 and most of it at full throttle that problem is pretty much gone, hit the key and its idling. Power has increased noticably and I ran a plot yesterday that shows a nice fuel mileage increase from around 34 average to 37+. We're going from MA to PA for a wedding next weekend and I plan to change the oil right after we get back, my theory being that the long highway run will help burn off more carbon to clean out. In the 6,000 miles I've added about 1/2 quart of oil wost of which I expect is because of pulling a sample for analysis. I still need to replace the passenger seat bottom with one Fred Moir gave me and figure out how to put in the antenna seal I bought from Rusty but overall I'm quite happy. Oh my wife had new tires put on it and had them nitrogen inflated, I can tell you I definately notice absolutely no difference.
