Yup. Dealer can get you a key in three days or less for probably $50 or a
little under that. I would also buy a spare ignition lock cylinder at the same

Re: [MBZ] 420 SEL

2014-09-22 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
There is a separate thread in the "For sale" forum where a couple of people
have addressed that. A decent used low mile engine would be around $2k.

The problem with that is the loss of matching numbers, if that matters. If it
were me and I wanted to maintain the value and integrity, I would have the
original engine torn down and repaired.

I don't see the R129 being a "classic" for a long, long time. Too many of them
produced and certainly nothing special about the lines or design in my opinion.
 And I own one, too.

The problem with this car, I believe, is the owners are placing too much
emphasis on "potential" value. There is no clear direction on how it might be
repaired or "restored", and no matter how it is done, it will never, ever
possess the value that it held prior to the engine failure.

In my mind the car is worth maybe $10-15k at best. Figure a used engine at $2k
of a complete rebuild at $5k and you still would be hard pressed to recover the
value, if possible.

I think they're screwed if you ask me.

I don't bother to remember or type in the MB address.

Re: [MBZ] 420 SEL

2014-09-22 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Agreed. There's got to be some attachment or emotion involved, or they're
"blinded by the tristar" and have unrealistic ideas of its value.

There's a 3400 mile 1991 500SL on BW right now. The owners, an older couple
who bought the car new, went for a drive and found the car had a head gasket
leak, which was due to a failure of the metal on the block at the edge of one
of the cylinder bores. Only fix is new engine or tear down the existing one
and weld/machine the block. Needless to say it's a big chunk of change for
either.

They're trying to sell it now, quoting the original sticker price, etc.,
without much activity other than people politely telling them they're nuts.

one likely to be very knowledgeable about MB so not easy to do.

There's a light in the center of the knob, it's to indicate
that the rear fog light is on. The knob pulls off to access
the bulb. The bezel often has its own dash light too, but
that's accessed from behind.

[MBZ] 420 sel light switch

2011-11-09 Thread Douglas Jones
Can anyone tell me if there should be a light in the light switch (I have
several mbz with same switch). If there is a light, how do I replace it?

Re: [MBZ] 87 MBZ 420 SEL High temp

2009-04-26 Thread Hursley
Sorry, I am slow on this one (was admitted to ER and spend 14 hrs there due
to my heart pulse at 160 for an hour).

Did you check the temperature switch in the engine? I had this problem in
my 190E which runs high even though I did flush the system, changed the
radiator cap, change the thermostat. It was the switch that fails to run
when it is at around 90.

Good luck.

My former 82 300SD ran hot when I first got it, but only at speeds above
about 30-40 mph. If you got out on the highway it would run up in the 90s
(C) and just sit there. Drop down to a lower speed and the temp dropped
down to the expected 87C.

1.) Cleaned the radiator. That is, removed it and pressure washed the
core. It was nasty. No joy.

2.) Replaced the thermostat. Rumors abound of Behr thermostats being
grossly inconsistent. Not this time.

3.) Made sure the little bypass line was working. Yup, clean as a
whistle.

4.) Replace water pump - the pump that came off was a NAPA pump. Oh, boy,
this has GOT to be it. Nope.

5.) Take radiator out and have the guy that did all of our industrial
engine radiators take a look at it. Bingo.

At some point in time, the PO ran the evil green stuff in it, and long
enough that it got exhausted and a great deal of the chemicals dropped out
of solution. So much so to the point that it clogged the center tubes of
the core. Interestingly enough, when he rodded the core out, only a
circular portion of the radiator tubes were clogged, that is, the very
center of the core where air flow (fan hub) was at the lowest.

So, the reason it would work fine at lower speeds was because I had plenty
of surface area to dump the heat. At high speeds when I needed all of the
radiator surface to dump engine heat to ambient air, I didn't have it.
Therefore, the excess heat remained in the cooling system and the
temperature of the system increased.

I got into the habit of taking every radiator out of my MBs after that
point and having them professionally cleaned. It's an easy job and
relatively cheap (used to be well under $100.)

Re: [MBZ] 87 MBZ 420 SEL High temp

2009-04-25 Thread LWB250

Since when? My radiator guy had a special tool that allowed him to remove and
install new crimp strips on crimped tanks. He did one on my 2001 Nissan
Altima. He put a top tank on my former 300TE's radiator as well, if I recall.

I can check with my industrial radiator guy on Monday - I am positive the
equipment and parts to do this exist and are currently in use.

Unfortunately, on anything newer than yours, it means a new
radiator. It is not possible to uncrimp the aluminum core from the
plastic tanks and crimp them back on without leaks -- the aluminum
fatigues and will fail to seal every time.

Not a bad plan, though -- and something I need to do with my "new" 87
since it gets hot in traffic (100C).

You just did. Nothing taking power from the overvoltage
relay is working right.

Replace its fuse, and at least try re-seating the relay.
That alone may do it.

These older OVP relays are pretty simple inside, the
metal cover slips off and you can see what's inside.
I've seen bad solder joints in those, too. There's
a big 18V Zener diode in there whose job it is to blow
the fuse and un-power the relay, if power goes out of

Re: [MBZ] 420 SEL High RPM

2009-04-17 Thread Peter Frederick
Idle control valve -- about have the size of a coke can, connected to
the air meter horn boot at the rear of the manifold (bottom half,
it's sorta buried).

Make sure it's connected and the hoses are intact.

You should also pull the codes from the computer to see what if any
error codes are stored.

The 126 chassis CDs are usually available on eBay, though they are
often pirated copies (they work fine). Rick's suggestion will get you
the real thing.

I did not see the Service CD's listed on the site. Your best bet would be to
call MBUSA Classic Center @ 1-866-MBCLASSIC (622-5277). I bought my W123

Re: [MBZ] 420

2007-10-26 Thread Curt Raymond

Diesel here is about $3.15. Your SDL got about 10% better mileage than the SEL.
10% of $31.5 is $2.83. If your gas is that price or cheaper you're saving money
(assuming you're paying the same for diesel.

That car needs premium? Around here thats $2.90 or more so it'd make not so
much sense. Of course unless you drive a lot of miles we're not talking a
tremendous amount of money.

diesel being much higher than diesel right now, the 420 seems cheaper to
drive. Its got way more power and is way smoother, thats for sure.

Well since I have sold my SDL I have been driving my 90 420SEL. I have been

higher than diesel right now, the 420 seems cheaper to drive. Its got way more

Is it the parking brake light ("BRAKE") or the lining light
(concentric broken circles)? The former means low fluid or
sticking/misadjusted parking brake mechanism (common on 124s, not sure
about 126s); the latter means worn pads or faulty (intermittently
grounding) sensors.

[MBZ] 420 SEL test port question?

2007-07-11 Thread E M
Hi Everyone,

Going to look at a 420 SEL later this week. I know the V8s have a test
port. Is it the same as the 300E, red on #3 and black on ground if you want
to have a look at the 02 sensor to see what's up with a dwell meter? Also,
where does rust like to hide in these beasts? I'm told the car is extra
clean with only about 100,000 miles, so we will see. Few records tough, so
I'll look extra close and a PPI on this one before buying. He says it needs
rear brakes as the light comes on. Is the light just an indicator there is
a fluid inbalance, or faulty master cylinder?

Thanks everyone.

Newer used seats to replace my holey bolster
Leatherique conditioning on all seats (look factory new)
carpets steam cleaned
new headlight doors
new center driveshaft bearing
flex disks
brake support bearings
rotors, bearings, and pads
I love this car but it is causing some major strife with the SO, So I told her
I would begin the process of selling her.
This is a mechanically sound car, drives fantastic, needs only one thing:
paint. It needs a decent paint job. The paint on the roof and rear deck lid
need painting.
For those interested, I can email pictures. For those closest enough for a
