From memory the use of lubricants other than graphite powder is a no no, if you want to use a liquid perhaps ATF is the best. However I have never been able to figure out how a cable can produce a bouncing effect. Hendrik with lots of bouncing needles Craig McCluskey wrote: Our '82 240D/3.0

Is this an appropriate treatment? I have some white lithium grease around here (if I can ever find it!), too. I've used Mobil 1 5W20. McParts sells a cable lube, but I was out (and thought I wasn't) once and used the lightest oil I had in a pinch. I figured a synthetic would not get sticky,

I've been warned against putting a liquid such as oil or the other stuff you mention - was told the fluid can be forced into the speedo head and fluid will be splashed inside the speedo - That's pretty much impossible, which you can see if you've taken one of these apart. You certainly

So maybe, following Hendrik's suggestion, some Mobil 1 ATF? (I do have some of that.) Maybe. I seem to recall that ATF is about 20-weight, and I've used it before, but I picked up a quart of M1 5W20 to use on light oiling jobs. All I remember is that the tube of cable lube I used before

My 300TD has experienced a succession of bouncing speedo needles, most noticeable (annoying) at low speeds. The fixes suggested on this forum over the years have almost always stressed the wisdom of buying a new cable (the insert). It worked for me, was cheap, and was easy to fit. I had a new

ATF stopped the cable in the 240 from bouncing the speedo for about a year, then it started again, followed by a dead speedo - broken cable. I second the suggestion of buying a new cable. I replaced the entire cable from the tranny up - not that bad a job in the 240 version of the 123 chassis. On
