I tried doing a reinstall last night. It would hang up installing
devices, restarted computer, install restarted, if finally made it thru
installing devices, then was on installing network. Left it sitting, this
morning, still on installing network. Cant even get install to work it
seems. Restarted it this morning, so will see what it does. Think Im
just gonig to buy a hard drive and start frmo scratch. My only concern
it, since Im running NTFS, will I be able to pull files out of different
users my documents or will it give me a access denied.

There is some command at the 'run prompt that will reset your IP stack,
IPCONFIG or something like that? Maybe it got corrupted and IE is all
 ferklempt.

[MBZ] O.T. Computer Trauma/Stuff Running in Background

2008-05-04 Thread Robert Rentfro
How can I, the biggest computer maladroit any of you know, figure out what
should be running on this machine when it is turned on?

One issue: It is lately stupid slow (it is, btw, an HP Pavilion 555y), lots
of freezing up (program not responding). Another is it takes almost four
minutes on start up before you can do anything and those four minutes are
spent with the hard drive churning non-stop, little light full on. Another
issue: the kids somehow got my space, my space messenger, windows live
messenger, aim, and something else to open every time I start this machine.
I have to sit and wait until they are done with their gyrations to close
them.and this is after I have to wait the initial four minutes.

I'm running Spysweeper with the virus protection. It finds lots of crap
every time it does a sweep. Doesn't seem to help performance, however.

I seem to remember once going to something like msconfig or something like
that and seeing a list of all the stuff that should be running in the
background and being amazed at all the crap that was running. I vaguely
remember deselecting stuff and performance improved.

Can anyone tell me how to get to that list and what I should have running
and how to get rid of the crap?

Lots of questions but I'm a computer special needs guy solidly on the tech

Re: [MBZ] O.T. Computer Trauma/Stuff Running in Background

2008-05-04 Thread Jeff Zedic
The reason for the page size increase is the huge amount of graphics,
scripts and annoying ads.

The best thing you can do if you've got kids getting at the machine is
to create a separate login account just for them. You retain
administrator rights and they can't install anything without your
approval.

This will also not run their crap when you want to use it.

How full is the hard drive? Is it making any noise? When was the last
time you defragged? When was the last time you ran scandisk to check
for errors? How much RAM do you have?

Most of those kiddie programs, AIM etc. start automatically. Right
click on their ico in the bottom right corner and open them. Go into
options and unclick start when windows starts or whatever wording they
use.

Check in the main menu/start for other programs listed there.

Personally I'd swap to a Linux distro. All those messenger progs can
be handled with ONE messenger prog in Linux. The distros out now are
painless and intuitive. They run miles better than MS junk. You really
won't notice the difference much after the first week.

I think the user accounts and passwords are the best resolution.
Perhaps a clean install?

I can walk you through any changes you need to make if you want to
phone me. It's easy stuff.

Re: [MBZ] O.T. Computer Trauma/Stuff Running in Background

2008-05-04 Thread Scott Ritchey
My experience trying to fix issues after a PC has been hosed isn't good.

What has worked for me is:
1. Get a good-sized external USB drive and save all your personal files on
it (pretty much everything in C:\Documents and Settings\Username)
2. Get a disk image backup program like Acronis.
3. Blow away everything on the old hard drive and reinstall the OS from
scratch or a use the system restore CD/DVD if one came with your PC.
4. Make sure you have working firewall and anti-virus programs running.
5. Connect to the internet and get all the patches from MS, probably will
require several iterations.
6. Reinstall your personal programs.
6a. Do a full image backup to the USB drive periodically in case one of your
personal programs clobbers the machine again.
7. Do a full image backup after all programs installed but before loading
your personal data files. This should only be a few gigs and may fit on one
DVD. Save this backup to restore the PC next time instead of going through
steps 1-6.
8. Copy your selected personal files from the USB drive to the Documents
and Settings folder. Only copy stuff that you know what it is in case there
is malware lurking. Some programs (like Outlook/Express, Mozilla, others)
store mail, shortcuts, etc. in non-intuitive places and you may need to hunt
for those files the first time.
9. Finally, if you have room on the USB drive, do another full image backup
of the whole thing.

I have found the free MS SyncToy program very useful for backing up selected
data files (like email) on a daily/weekly basis providing you have an
external hard drive (USB or NAS) to store it on.

I also find it very convenient to create an applications folder on an
external drive (USB or NAS) with subfolders for each of my personal software
applications (and text files for associated keys). This makes
reinstallation very fast compared to finding and swapping all those
installation DVD/CDs. This worked fine for everything except Roxio Easy
CD/DVD Creator 6 which fatally messed up the drive letter mapping when I
installed it from my NAS.

A final note, when I travel with a notebook PC, I find an external 2.5 in
USB drive VERY convenient. It is smaller than the equivalent stack of CDs I
would need to carry and I can easily copy email and other data from my
desktop PC to the USB drive and then copy the updated files back to the
desktop after the trip. These drives are reasonably priced now and much
cheaper than a new notebook with a bigger hard drive.

You can install Widoze over the top of it self.
The problem you will run into is the New install doesn't
touch the Registry files so if there is junk in the Registry
it will remain.
Kaleb try using the Registry in CCleaner to get rid of the crap left behind.
I'll send you a program off line that may repair your Internet connection.

still cant get IE to work, and firefox only works when it wants to.

Those you can remove (Add/Remove Software on Control Panel) and then
 reinstall.

I'd still be wondering if there were something the anti-spyware/virus
 software missed.

Thanks. I have run cccleaner often. And again since the problem has
occured, that has not fixed it. Yea, send that program you are talking

Boot from the install CD and select the Install Windows option. If it
finds an existing installation, it will then ask if you want to Repair
it.
If you select the first Repair option, it takes you to the recovery console.

To hell with lousy geeky computer forums, you guys are, as the kids say,
bomb. Thanks Russ for this link. I was able to get rid of MANY things that
were running at startup. I heeded Wilton's and Rick's advice and it helped
also. Zedic made a great deal of headway in people's efforts to convert me
to Linux. This pig is blazing fast now. This was a productive Sunday.
Thanks smart guys.

Bob,

Start by going to this web site: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/
Next open up the Run Command [ Start Run ]
Type in msconfig Click OK.
When System Configuration Utility opens up click on the Start Up Tab
On the Left hand column you will see a list of commands
Start at the top and one by one use the Search feature at the Bleeping
Computer
web site and use the recommendations they give for turning off the programs.
WARNING DO NOT TURN OFF YOUR ANTI-VIRUS By mistake :-) .
When you finish Click the Apply Button on the Bottom.
Windoze will tell you You'll Need to Reboot.
Reboot
You will get a Dialog Box Stating you Have Changed Start up settings.
There is a Check box that says not to show again. Check the Box and
click Ok.

Also there is a good, and best of all FREE, program to get rid of the
Temp Internet files
and other Crap on Your system. Originally named Crap Cleaner it has been
renamed CCleaner
can be found at: http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds Download the
Slim Version
It doesn't have that darn Google Search bar included.

Good Luck
Any questions contact me here or off line at the above address.

How can I, the biggest computer maladroit any of you know, figure out what
should be running on this machine when it is turned on?

One issue: It is lately stupid slow (it is, btw, an HP Pavilion 555y),
lots
of freezing up (program not responding). Another is it takes almost four
minutes on start up before you can do anything and those four minutes are
spent with the hard drive churning non-stop, little light full on. Another
issue: the kids somehow got my space, my space messenger, windows live
messenger, aim, and something else to open every time I start this
machine.
I have to sit and wait until they are done with their gyrations to close
them.and this is after I have to wait the initial four minutes.

I'm running Spysweeper with the virus protection. It finds lots of crap
every time it does a sweep. Doesn't seem to help performance, however.

I seem to remember once going to something like msconfig or something
like
that and seeing a list of all the stuff that should be running in the
background and being amazed at all the crap that was running. I vaguely
remember deselecting stuff and performance improved.

Can anyone tell me how to get to that list and what I should have running
and how to get rid of the crap?

Lots of questions but I'm a computer special needs guy solidly on the tech
 short bus.

 Thanks
