The Mazcedes had 'upgraded' headlights. Pure crap.
Going back to stock would have been the best thing you
could do. Not my problem anymore, though.

Well one more bad fuse and now I have working parking lights on both sides of
the car as well as headlights.

Somewhere along the way "Neolite" H4 headlamps were installed in place of the
original lights. Might sound like an upgrade but these things are junk.
Lightweight plastic and just flimsy feeling. They also had either a DRL
function or maybe foglight (using H3 bulbs) and "city lights" or possibly
additional turn signal using a small incandescent bulb, all crammed in the 7"
diameter lamp housing and wired up but not working. I'm not keeping those crap
lights so I cut all the non-stock wiring out and that helped a lot with the
rats nest of wire under the hood but there is still more cleanup to do to
repair the miscellaneous electrical things that were added and removed over the
years.

I need to get some contact cleaner and clean all the fuse holders and all the
push-tab connectors. Everything is fairly dirty.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Ghia notes - now electrical

2021-08-15 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
Trying to figure out why my left side headlights and parking lights don't work.

With headlights on, I measure 12v at the bulb socket. Headlight verified
working by connecting it to a battery charger.

I made up some short leads with crimp-on tab connectors at one end to fit into
the headlight socket. I measure 12v on these. Connecting them to the headlight,
voltage drops to zero, no light. I tried measuring current flow, nothing.

I tried grounding directly to the body instead of using the ground wire in the
headlight socket. No difference.

So I'm thinking there must be some huge resistance somewhere between the switch
and the headlight on that side. The meter sees 12v but no current can flow
under load. So I'm looking for a corroded connection or splice somewhere on the
positive side? Sound right?

I used to have a Datsun B3000 or something like that, early 80's econobox sedan.

The tune-up procedure for setting the ignition timing was to note the current
setting, perform a 0-60 run and note the time required.  Adjust a small amount
in either direction, perform 0-60 run, compare original and new time, and
proceed with further adjustment until the fastest time was achieved.

Well running much better now.

I went through the carb balancing routine again, and setting the idle mixture
screws. Got a good idle at 800rpm. Not quite sure what spec is.

I advanced the timing from 5 degrees BTDC at idle to 7.5. Idle speed went up,
so I adjusted it the idle back down and drove it. Better but still a "flat"
spot in the throttle. Advanced again to 10 degrees BTDC and it seems even
better. Still not perfect but it is drivable. At higher RPM it advances to a
little over 30 degrees; hard to tell exactly because my old timing light
doesn't seem to fire as accurately at that speed so the timing marks appear to
be jumping around some.

Not sure how far I can safely advance it. I have no temperature monitoring on
this engine. I don't mind running premium gas as it's just a "for fun" car
mostly, though it has about 4 gallons of 87 in the tank right now. Probably
will pick up some Seafoam and run it in the gas for a little while just for
good measure.

I buy it in the gallon jug and refill the little cans. The gallon jug is eye
wateringly expensive but for the price of 5 cans you get the volume of 9

Seafoam was invented to solve a particular problem in the boating industry.
Outboard motors are a seasonal use device. Spring, summer, early fall, they
get used, then comes winter and they are stored [stored means everything
from left on the boat in the water to brought inside and kept dry]. All
that said, the months of non use brought about the fuel/ oil mix congealing
in the carbs and plugging jets, etc.. everything we are plagued with.
Then came SeaFoam, which dissolves all the crud and lets you get back on
the lake or river without the expensive annual engine rebuild cost.
Lucky us... it also works on cars, trucks, and tractors... Great stuff...
It pulls the rabbit out of the hat time after time. They even make a
version to add to engine oil that dissolves sludge in the crankcase. That
works well also... Cheap? no. but it works.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Ghia notes

2021-08-08 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
I was at Harbor Freight today and they had a cheap overhead valve spring
compressor so I bought it. I tried it but could not see how to release the
spring keeper on the top of the valve stem. The compressor hooks around the
lower turns of the spring and then has a screw to press the top down. All it
did was pull the bottom of the spring up.

So I gave up on that and used a hose clamp, a wooden block, and a pry bar to
operate the rocker arm with the pushrods removed. The valve seemed to move
fine; it felt the same as the one next to it anyway.

New pushrod installed, clearances set, new spark plugs -- and it's running on 4
cylinders now. Verified by checking exhaust pipe temps with infrared
thermometer. Also sounds better.

Drives somewhat better, still stumbles when I put my foot down. Now that it's
running on 4 cylinders, my carb balancing is off. So I need to go through that
again. I'm going to play with the timing a bit also, it's roughly right but
maybe I can advance it a bit more.

And then if it's still not right I guess I need to take the carbs apart and go
through them.

Think it is possible that the valve siezed up from sitting and that's what bent
the pushrod when someone finally tried to start it?

Thinking about trying to rig something up so I can press the valve stem with a
pry bar to see if it moves.

Here is what your cam follower should look like. To replace it, you must
split the case. However, they are generally very hardy and I would think
you shouldn't have to go there.

I would pull the rockers and remove the push rod, inspect the valve springs
in place for damage or weakness [compare that cylinder to the others]. It
could be a simple case of the valve sticking open, giving excess clearance
for the rocker, which then unseated the push rod. Has the car been sitting
 unused for any extended time?

Pushrod is definitely bent based on the glass pane test. The other three are
straight.

It's marked MPR-1000 on the rod so I guess it's these?

Yeah I was remembering something like that follower on the inner end, but I
really need my "Complete Idiots Guide" exploded diagram to remember. What
a great book!

OK so that follower is motivated by a separate shaft that runs parallel and
below the crankshaft? Is that right? IIRC that is the setup. Probably
not going to be a concern here, problem is most likely at the outer end in
the head somewhere.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Ghia notes

2021-08-07 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
It would work the same way. Since it’s effectively out of the engine now, you
might as well check it to be sure.

Having owned and worked on more VW engines than I care to recall, I wouldn’t
worry too much about this. High-revving can cause it as well as some ham-handed
mechanic not getting things lined up when replacing the rocker arm assembly.

Remove the rocker arm assembly, or simply loosen it if you prefer, make sure
all of the ball ends of the pushrods are in the sockets of the rocker arms,
torque the nuts to spec, adjust the valves, and move on.

It’s a VW, you’re unlikely to hurt it.

2021-08-07 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
Yes it has been sitting. It received a completely rebuilt engine in 2005 and
was then rarely driven according to the prior owner. You can see that the
inside of the head still looks new and the rest of the engine is likewise still
very clean. I believe it had been filled with Brad Penn oil, it looked
distinctly greenish when I drained it.

Not sure what a VW pushrod looks like, but back in the day the way to check SBC
pushrods was roll them on a piece of glass. If it's not straight, you'll know
it in a second.

It's a simple solid cam follower at the other end, from what I remember.

Will start with checking if the pushrod is bent. Maybe try to eyeball down the
pushrod tube. I dont think the loose pushrod would really cause any internal
engine damage, unless the cam follower has been kicked out of place and is now
sitting at the bottom of the case (not sure that's possible or likely).

2021-08-07 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Chances are, that push rod is now bent. I would not reuse it.
Cause: Possible excessive valve clearance, possible weak or cracked valve
spring which let the rocker "float" out of the push rod pocket. or, the
push rod could have failed and bent on its own which would have made it
lose thus unseated itself.
Here is what your cam follower should look like. To replace it, you must
split the case. However, they are generally very hardy and I would think
you shouldn't have to go there.
https://www.jbugs.com/product/113109309C.html

I would pull the rockers and remove the push rod, inspect the valve springs
in place for damage or weakness [compare that cylinder to the others]. It
could be a simple case of the valve sticking open, giving excess clearance
for the rocker, which then unseated the push rod. Has the car been sitting
unused for any extended time?

2021-07-29 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
No but I did watch one of his videos last night about how to make a sheet metal
brake.

Mine is in pretty good shape. I'm going to need to patch a rusty area in the
passenger floor and work out how water is getting in there, and at some point
repaint it, but it is solid otherwise and has many updated parts.

Cool. Then all four barrels need syncing.

I have an old set of mercury carb sticks. I wonder why I can get mercury?

Have you noticed that Bob from "I like to Make Stuff" on YouTube is restoring
a Ghia? He did the gas tank in the last episode. His is a bit of a disaster but
he's a pretty good craftsman, it'll be interesting to watch him get it fixed up.
