I have found that when I go near such a climb I should always wear a Safety Fall Harness, with a 20 ft rope staked to the ground 100 ft away from the climb the 20 ft fall rope keeps me from making the climb and I keep safe with both feet firmly on the ground.. I have scaled/climbed some of the tallest masts in the CONUS, and been on the top of many a tall building, but if I don’t have a solid surface under me I’m not going. There’s a 1600’ TV transmitter mast about a mile south of me I climbed back in the late 90s in my former career, and whenever I drive past it I marvel at the fact that I did it. That’s nearly 10 minutes going up in the little open man lift in the middle, than another 100’ or so climb up a ladder. I'm kind of like that too...I'm not afraid of heights as long as I can keep one foot on the ground. I had a tough time of it when I worked as a steamfitter-rigger on a powerhouse in the Hudson Valley across the river from West Point. As a member of the "bull gang" I often had to climb ladders like that with a chain fall over my shoulders to hook up to a beam...crawling out on the beam to get it in the right spot. I did become somewhat desensitized, but never liked it.
