[MBZ] Older 300D For Sale

2013-11-25 Thread Dan Penoff
No personal interest, etc., just saw it while I was out today. Pictures are
here:

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/x19qn67o4j1z6ll/mpuiFKtX5B

Looks very solid, with some minor surface rust spots bubbling up in the back
edge of the rear fenders, a common spot for these cars. Rockers appeared to be
very solid and no rust present from a cursory look. The rest of the finish
looks great, and would be even better after a good Martha treatment. Chrome is
solid, no dings or dents in the body, wheels and tires looked decent. Interior
is red MB tex and looks very good, as does the carpet.

Rubber is dried out and cracking, such as windshield seal. Car was locked so I
couldn't open the door to check the other rubber bits. The odometer appeared
to have 104k on it.

I tried calling the number but got voice mail. 813.919.7531

If anyone is interested in a follow up let me know and I'll see what I can find
out.

Yeah I tried that for a while but I had a lot of trouble walking
around. For some reason the world seemed to spin around a lot,
especially whenever I stood up. Probably not the food, could have
had something to do with that colorless liquid I was drinking.
Seemed to burn a lot as it went down too.

Actually it could be done. You can eat veggies and fruits and
drink fresh juice. Course that still leaves the crud washed down
in the rain that the growing plants may pick up.

In the end, as the man said 'Nobody gets out alive, so eat, drink
and be merry for sooner or later we all gotta go.'

*STROKE: *Remember the 1st Three Letters. S. T. R.

*STROKE IDENTIFICATION:*

*During a BBQ, a woman stumbled and took a little fall - she
assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) ..
She said she had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes.*

*They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she
appeared a bit shaken up, Jane went about enjoying herself the rest of
the evening*

*Jane's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been
taken to the hospital -
(At 6:00 PM Jane passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had
they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Jane would be
with us today? Some don't die. They end up in a helpless, hopeless
condition instead.*

*It only takes a minute to read this...*

*A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours
he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke..._totally_. He said the
trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the
patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough...*

*RECOGNIZING A STROKE*

*Thank God for the sense to remember the '3' steps, STR. Read and Learn!*

*Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify.
Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim
may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize
the symptoms of a stroke.*

*Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking
three simple questions:*

*S **Ask the individual to SMILE.
*
T **Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently)

(i.e. It is sunny out today.)
*
R* *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call emergency
number _immediately _and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

New Sign of a Stroke Stick out Your Tongue

NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out
his tongue. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the
other, that is also an indication of a stroke.

My wife had a TIA (transient ischemic attack, mild stroke) a year ago
December. She has recovered significantly, but still complains about
memory problems.

We had a Reader's Digest article on the refrigerator. I got it and
performed the tests.

*S **Ask the individual to SMILE.

Yup, she passed that one.

T **Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently)

Nope, flunked that one.

R* *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

Yup, she passed that one.

After she funked the simple sentence test, we zoomed off to the ER (after
calling 911, who didn't know what a TIA was).

New Sign of a Stroke Stick out Your Tongue

I didn't know that one.

We will be praying for your recovery, Pete.

$55 each. how much then do you surmise worlpac has in them? let's say
$45. it is suspicious that worldpac can source a new axle shaft, have it
shipped to them from china and then have it shipped to you, all for $45.
  in
fact, it makes no sense at all.

i don't know how many feq's the bimby had sold and how many of the cheap
ones sold were something of higher quality chinese. i do know that feq
was
a disaster waiting to happen, but the seduction of high sales at high
margins is too much for most people to pass up

I think the primary concern is getting the area clean enough for the
solder to stick properly. My guess is that
what you want is the flux - essentially acid - that was used when
soldering eavestroughing back when it was
galvanized steel instead of aluminum or plastic. Wipe that stuff on
and it would eat anything that might cause

trouble. Then the solder joint would stick pretty good.

Hello All

The safe way to repair a fuel tank is with soft solder and an
old-fashioned soldering copper.

In this process, there need not be fire anywhere near the tank, there
is no spark ever, and the temperature of the
tank can be moderated with partial water fillingor sponging with
water similar to in bodywork welding.

One of my many old bosses used to do this a lot. It was something of
a trade secret to him; he would not allow
outsiders to actually see him do it. He used to cackle about how much
money he could get for so little work on tank

repair. But he used to cackle about a lot of things.

Stay away from fuel tank welding; it's too dangerous.

Another trick that I've heard about but never witnessed is called
'pressing up' the tank, whereby you fill it with water so that the fuel
is pressed up to the top of the tank, and then you weld so that the
water gets heated and not the fuel. How do you keep the water leaking
out of the break from mucking up your welding? I don't know...

Fuel tank welding is rather tricky. I've done it. The secret
ingredient is a lawnmower putting away filling the tank with
non-oxygen,

and keeping it that way.

I don't really recommend it.

Not so, there are financial reasons to lease, if you earn profits, you

Your AG1 must be blank. when I ran the formula, my ag1 was blank,
and it returned 109 (based on 1900)

When I put a value in a1 as 1/2/1934, it returns 75, the correct
answer. Your AG1 must also be formatted as a date.

Check the format of AG1, and make sure it is not a blank cell,
because the formula is reading AG1 as blank.

To be a bit more accurate, it's not horsepower dependent, really,
it's the slip ratio of the torque converter (which is a bit more
complicated than a fluid coupling). High slip results in torque
amplification.

Effectively it's a lower gear ratio.

Your comments of efficiency and fuel consumption are correct -- as
well a some reduction in top speed as the torque converter will slip
more at high speed if it's a high rpm stall one than if it's a low
rpm stall speed one.

Fluid couplings (in the automotive sense, that is) do not have a
variable stator and therefore do not have a dual stall speed like a
torque converter does. The variable stator (of any of about three
main types) allows one to have a high stall speed fluid coupling
under power at low speed and a low stall speed fluid coupling at high
speed. Some are simply one-way clutches, the most common current
type, but in the past there have been a couple different active
systems. The one most people over 50 would know is in the GM
Powerglide 2-speed automatic. Buick used them in the Twin Turbine
(along with two separate torque converters if I remember correctly)
and at least one other GM division had an active one.

Lockup torque converters are great, by the way

I bet you were *vry* quiet after that! The good old days.

Now if that were to happen today, the ACLU would show up with the TV cameras
and that teacher would be ruined for life just for attempting to correct you
and prevent you from practicing your free speech. After that, you father
would be arrested and charged with child abuse - just for suggesting you be
hit - and you'd be in a foster home, with who knows what kind of people?

I'd like to see our schools begin to demand a standard of courtesy and to
show respect for the people who are there to help them find a path in life -
as it is now, the kids seem to run the class rooms. Based on what gets into
the news at least. Teachers being assaulted, violent and bad language the
norm, kids being assaulted, all the while the administrators are being
highly paid as the teachers get the lower pay.

Things are backwards and have been for a while.

But I don't see things changing anytime soon.

Well geez Pete, maybe because the newer oils are plain better than what was
available 50 years ago...
I've been using 10w30 in my '52 Farmall Super M for almost 10 years now. It
runs just as good now as it did 10 years ago. I was VERY careful when I started
using detergent oil to only use a little detergent oil at first and change the
oil more often so that as the crud broke up from the oil pan it wouldn't cause
problems, and it didn't. This is a pretty common practice in the old tractor
community and although my Uncle Reg said I was going to destroy that tractor
he's been dead 6 years now and the tractor continues on...

You may not believe it but once in awhile is whippersnappers know a thing or

Re: [MBZ] Older

2009-08-29 Thread Peter Frederick
The explanation I heard for using single weight oils in air cooled
engines (and I presume 2-stroke diesels as well) is that they run
quite hot in comparison to liquid cooled engines, and the single
weight oil is less subject to viscosity loss at that neat level.
Lower viscosity means much higher oil consumption. Non detergent oil
means less foaming, also a concern with a splash lubed engine.

However, I use 15W50 M1 in my lawn mowers -- they use less oil since
the viscosity at operating temp is somewhat higher than straight 30
weight so long as the viscosity package and the base oil hold up (and
with Mobil 1 this is not a problem).

Dino oils with viscosity extenders will probably go thin at high
temp, and given the applications, I would expect trouble due to thin
oil/low oil pressure and excessive consumption.

Synthetics are a different animal, but I would still follow
manufacturers CURRENT recommendations, not those from 1955

Re: [MBZ] Older

2009-08-29 Thread Peter Frederick
I read the document about oil for Detroit 2-strokes. Sounds like
Mobil 1 would be fine (although not recommended) IF you do oil
analysis checking for wear. Certainly, M1 15W50 is going to have
better film strength and higher viscosity at running temp than 30
weight oil, anyway, and has vastly better detergent power to keep the
crud out of the ring grooves, etc.

The main drawback is going to be soot accumulation, as per usual, and
the only cure for that is more frequent changes. If the change
frequency, as determined by TBN and soot accumulation, gets to less
than twice that for dino oil, there is no advantage to using synthetic.

The only problem with using detergent oil in an engine with pressure
feed lubrication (as opposed to splash lube) is that any accumulated
varnish and sludge is going to be suspended, driven through the oil
pump, and will clog the filter(s), leaving you with unfiltered, dirty
oil in the bearings. If the engine has been recently or newly
rebuilt, there is absolutely no advantage to using non-detergent oil
-- the crud belongs in the disposable filter and into the trash, not
the bottom of the oil pan and other dead spots in the engine.

If you have an old engine with serious accumulations of sludge, I'd
advise cleaning it up first before changing to detergent oil, for the
above reasons. Non-detergent oil will work fine until you tear it
apart for some reason, but after that, there is absolutely NO reason
to use non-detergent oils in any engine with an oil filter.

My favorite non-detergent oil story is supplied by my barber. He got
an early 70's Ford pickup from an old farmer for a pretty good price
because it smoked a little. He got it home and tried to change the
oil, since he knew the old man was a cheapskate and used the cheapest
oil he could lay his hands on. No go -- took the oil plug out, and
nothing came out of the sump. Had to drive a large screwdriver about
4 in to break up the hard sludge enough to get the oil to drain, so
he dropped the pan and removed the oil filter. Filter weighed about
3 lbs -- when they cut it open, it was packed with solid sludge. The
oil pan was filled with sludge with just a small clear area around
the oil pickup, and they ended up just rebuilding the engine rather
than trying to clear it out -- heads were full of crud too.

Turns out the oil man had only changed the oil once in 50,000 miles
or so -- and that was the factory 200 mile service. He just added
non-detergent oil to keep it full and drove it..

The document state multiviscosity oils are not recommended. It
does NOT mention synthetic oils by name or type, which is why I would
like to see the data (tables) not included. It does state that any
oil meeting the listed SE/CD rating is adequate for use. This would
presumably include CH-4 and CI rated oils.. One oil change (of
normal durration, not the 100,000 50 gal over the road truck engine
application) should tell you if you are getting adequate engine
protection and acceptable oil consumption.

I would not disagree that many multi-viscosity oils are inferior in
high heat applications to single viscosity oils, but that is purely a
matter of formulation, and modern multi-viscosity oils are much
better than they were a few years ago. I would assume that is true
for single weight oils, but I don't know -- the market for single
weight oils is quite small.

It also clearly states that any oil not on the list should be tested
regularly for wear and degradation and may be good (or not),
including any oils single viscosity oils NOT ON THE LIST.

There is a huge difference between adding a viscosity extender to a
single weight dino oil and the extended viscosity characteristics of
synthetic base oil.

MB does not recommend any 10-W40 oil, including Mobil 1, but does
recommend the use of 15W50 and 5W40 Mobil 1, last time I looked, for
the OM603.

weight oils is quite small.

MB does not recommend any 10-W40 oil, including Mobil 1, but does
recommend the use of  15W50 and 5W40 Mobil 1, last time I looked, for
the OM603.

don't think Mobil 1 10w30 would hurt anything. It'd probably be better
than 30wt if you're pushing that lower temp limit but I don't think
it'll buy you all that much.

Pete do you have a specific reason that 15w40 would be bad?

Curt,
I do not own a 2 cycle Detriot Diesel. I did some consulting work a few
years ago for a shop the has extensive experiance with Fire Engine
repairs. They had 2 bulk oil systems; One was 40wt for 2 cycle Detriots
and the other was Kendal 15-40 for all other engines.
These engine were very cosly to rebuild, down time on a fire engine is frightfully expensive. Why play with it.

Old Detroits are 2 cycle, you may have seen a heavy truck with a
t-handle emergency shut-off.If you shut of a warm Detriot and it
hit TDC, it can restart ass backwards!
It's running away, burning it's lube oil.
About 25 years ago we had one blow up inside that local Firehouse. When
the driver yanked the T-Handle, it broke in his hand, a huge mess
{Belching oil smoke out the intake system} and very expensive. Very
loud on it's way to desruction, nobody can hear, running too fast to get
it into gear.
Since that time, whenever they shut-down a Detroit, the have a fellow
stand at the tailpipe ready to stuff a plug into it if it runs backwards.
