Good for the long hauls with the head. I suppose you could fold those seats
down to sleep too. Add a little fridge and a microwave and it could be a
minimal RV

What a nightmare. My local dealership has been decent about attending to
basically the same issues. The worst thing that ever happened to me was a
check engine light and decreased fuel economy when two air charge hoses had
cracked. That cost about $900 to repair. The emissions-related recalls and
the replacement of the def blue heater element we're both handled under
warranty from Mercedes of North America.

The fellow I referred to has a 2014 GLK250 that is causing him grief. He
bought it new and it has only 120K Kilometers on it so around 75K miles.

He has had 2 NOX sensors and the DEF pump and heater replaced. The
dealer says it needs a DPF but none are available.

The DPF will be under warranty but apparently the NOX sensors and DEF
pump and heater are not and they are expensive.

There is also an issue with the SCR (catalytic converter).

It apparently sprays too much DEF under acceleration and the stuff
puddles in the SCR. It ultimately burns off and mucks up the NOX
sensors. It blows white smoke out the back when it burns off the DEF.

They have looked inside the SCR and say it is falling apart internally
and some of the material from it is coating the NOX sensors.

They did a DPF regeneration and a week later there is a code saying it
is almost plugged again.

He is not a happy camper. The dealer has not been able to resolve the
issues so far.

Re: [MBZ] Retirement Ride

2021-11-09 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
The 'living room' aspect of the truck camper is its weakest point.
That, and the climbing up into it, and up into the bed. But if you're
still somewhat agile...

We use ours as a mobile bedroom. With kitchen, dining, and
bathroom facilities as necessary. Our time 'elsewhere' is spent
mostly not in the camper, except when sleeping.

Though truck campers are a tiny fraction of the RV market, there's
still a lot of choices in layouts, sizes, features, etc. They, like everything
else, have gotten kind of expensive lately. We paid $5k for our used Lance.
It goes on the truck I already had. Hard to beat that for RV-ing value.
My truck had the camper package, which is basically some overload leaf
springs and a heavy rear sway bar. Makes quite a difference in how it
handles that top-heavy load! Do NOT skimp on tires. Load range E or
better. I run 80psi on the rears.

Campers with slide-outs tend to be particularly vertical, so beware of that.
The floor of our Lance is basically the truck bed, so it's only three steps
up and in. I've seen many with more like a six-step staircase to get in.
Scary.
There are models with side entries, basically the staircase is inside rather
than outside. But for every such 'plus', there are minuses. Do your homework!

Well, I certainly have the truck for it, Curt…my ‘05 Dodge 2500 5.9 Cummins.
Wifey was marveling at them the other day what with the new ones and their

Just to be a contrarian: bedbugs. Apparently they're making a comeback.
Also, you have to consider the resale value in the RV calculus.

For us, though perhaps less roomy, the best on-the-road living value is
via a truck camper. Full queen-sized bed. Truck can go just about anywhere.
If truck kacks, you can replace it, and you don't have to pay the 'RV penalty'
when getting serviced.

Take along a toad. Something like a nice little SLK?

Re: [MBZ] Retirement Ride

2021-11-09 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes

After taking the cross country trip from Oregon to North Carolina, I now
understand why many RVers choose to stay in hotels on the road. It’s not worth
the time to set up every night just to tear down the next morning. With three
people and four Doodles, the RV was the best way to travel, but it was way
easier to just park the RV, drag suitcases into the hotel, get a good night’s
sleep and continue the journey the next morning. The motorhome worked well for
our one month stay at the campground before moving into our new house. The dogs
didn’t enjoy being cooped up without a place to run, but now, they have a large
yard. Once the permanent back yard fence is installed, they will have a WHOLE
LOT more room to run.
I hope you find the perfect traveling ride.

The answer should be obvious.

W123 turbodiesel station wagon with *at least* 380,000 miles so you know
that the car has been broken in properly. Preferably a former daily
driver, white exterior with a blue leather interior, third row seating,
roof cross bars, and rebuilt Becker AM/FM cassette with bluetooth

I agree with Floyd. An ML or GL would be perfect for such types of travel, and
modern enough to be easily serviced just about anywhere.

While a W126 that’s well sorted and in good shape would be nice, if something
happens to it and you’re in bumf*ck wherever, getting it serviced will be a
challenge.

Re: [MBZ] Retirement Ride

2021-11-09 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
A GL or ML or a wagon, you can get all your impedimenta in any of them
without struggling, and tow something if you want on the SUVs, and take
a nap if you want (or if no AirBnBs about you can sleep in it).  The
bigger the better for highway miles and room to stretch your legs around
while driving.  Even the 211 wagon falls a bit short in the last measure
but the 163 ML is great in that regard, although noisier and harsher
ride.  The newer SUVs are much better in that regard though.  An AWD SUV
will get you in the back country if you want to explore off the beaten
track, or deal with snow and such if you are out in that, even rain too.

room it (“you can pay for a lot of hotel rooms for $135K”).
If you recall, I bought the 2008 CLK350 thinking it was going to be that
vehicle (boy child totaled it).
The drop top was kind of fun, but I think doing several thousand miles in
something like that would get tiresome.
What are y’all’s suggestions on what would be a good choice for that?

[MBZ] Retirement Ride

2021-11-09 Thread Bob Rentfro via Mercedes
After 38 years of moving neutrons, I’m calling it quits in March. We had
considered traveling alles uber our Country but I am having a hard time
convincing Mrs.Bob we should buy Chip’s Prevost.
She is leaning more towards getting a new to us vehicle and Air BnB or hotel
room it (“you can pay for a lot of hotel rooms for $135K”).
If you recall, I bought the 2008 CLK350 thinking it was going to be that
vehicle (boy child totaled it).
The drop top was kind of fun, but I think doing several thousand miles in
something like that would get tiresome.
What are y’all’s suggestions on what would be a good choice for that?
