Which means, at least with 10-15 year old Datsuns, eCVT licensed from Toyoda.
So it's not snowmobile CVT like the non-hybrid Altima.

And it was fairly peppy. 2010 model was quicker 0-60 than a 2.3-16.

Buick trim levels:
CXL = high end, leather interior.
CXS = Sport = rides like a truck, not like a Buick.
CX = cheaper than the above.

Re: [MBZ] W211 Nanny Mania

2020-06-29 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Agreed. I’ve known a number of people with various models of Hondas from the
early 2000s on that have had serious issues. CRVs have exploding AC systems,
for example.

I’ve had a 2001 Nissan Altima from new, a 2006 Mazda 6 from new, and A couple
of Ford Focii used and all of them were solid vehicles with little to no
issues. Granted, you can always get a clunker, but you’re hedging your bets
with cars like these.

Buicks with the 3.8l six are like flies on dookey around here because of their
popularity wit the blue hairs. Same goes for Grand Marquis and the Ford
equivalent, but those often have V8s and I want a car that’s economical, not a
gas guzzler.

I don’t have a particular penchant for a given Buick model, the Lucernes seem
to be fairly common in the pre-2010 time frame and are solid, well built cars
with nice interiors and amenities. The drive train is proven and fairly robust
and they’re cheap and easy to repair. An Asian car like a Nissan Altima would
probably be a four banger, which I’m not keen about from a power standpoint but
they’re pretty simple and bulletproof.

We’ll see. He may throw me a curve when I talk to him tonight. I’m pretty well
leaning Buick or Nissan at this point. He’a a big guy, too, so cabin space is a
consideration.

Thanks, everyone! Keep those suggestions coming.

People talk about how well made and reliable Hondas are, but I'm not
convinced. Especially the automatic transmissions don't seem to be
really long-lived.

I won't buy another Honda with an autobox. Have had two that both had
problems.

I might consider an Accord or Civic with a 5-speed. Some Elements (and
I assume CRVs) had manuals also.

Definitely avoid anything German. Germans expect you'll follow the
maintenance schedule. Things don't tend to go well if you
don't. Probably applies to most other Euro marques as well.

I wonder why? That search was on my phone, on a Firefox
browser, not the app. I refuse to use the app. I will try on
the computer (Linux w/FF) and see what comes up.

Looks like it depends on the search parameters.
Using just e320 brings up a few.
Using mercedes benz e320 brings up next to nothing.
Using Mercedes-Benz brings up your next project...

and a potential son's car.

Believe it or not, there’s not a W210 to be found around here right now. Not
sure what that’s about, but they’re slim pickings for some reason.

Might go look a this Buick Lucerne:

And another in the immediate area, a little older but it’s green!!

We’ll see. I need to have a sit-down with him first and get some feedback.

Yes it does, but the battery minder system will differentiate between the

Re: [MBZ] W211 Nanny Mania

2020-06-29 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I woud consider putting him in a W210 sedan if I could find a decent one. I’m
just so frazzled over this W211, a part of which is my own fault because of the
miles (337k) that are now on it and that it was less than perfect when I got
it. he won’t maintain or repair the car, he’ll just drive it into the ground.
That’s why I would go towards something relatively bulletproof, like a Camry,
Altima, Buick (with the 3.8l, not 3.6l, my mistake.)

I would recommend a Crown Vic (older ones had an intake manifold coolant leak
issue), Toyota Camry 2004-2006 four cylinder, Toyota Corolla 2003 or newer,
Buick with 3800 V6. The GM 3.4 is junk.
A Toyota Matrix, or Pontiac Vibe would work too, if he needs a hatchback or
wagon. I never really liked Nissan after they merged with Renault.

I’m pulling the plug on this car. The battery bitch is still going on, yet the
DAS shows system voltage at 13.4 or better depending on what’s going on. As a
function of the battery gripe it’s cutting off systems as it’s supposed to do
in the event things were really screwed up so he’s not getting AC when it
doesn’t feel like turning it on. Screw that.

I’m getting the son into a Nissam Altima or a nice Buick with a 3.6l V6, as
they’re all over the place here with the blue hairs that get their licenses
yanked. Something he can drive the shit out of, get an oil change at the
quickie lube place, and anyone can fix it if it breaks.

I’ve already got some cars to look at tonight after he gets off work. I’m done
with this thing. I have neither the time nor the inclination to deal with it.

Put the car on the DAS and ran a full set of diagnostics. A few bangs,
some we expected, like EGR which is disabled, but a couple for the SBC.
Ran the SBC diagnostics and sure enough, left front pressure is below
spec. Explained the 25 year warranty to son, had him do a screen grab of
the DAS errors, and wrapped things up. He’s calling the stealership
tomorrow to get the car in for the SBC to be replaced under warranty.

He decided after many months of it sitting on the shelf to install the
glow plug controller to replace the one on the car that has failed. It’s
bolted to the bottom of the intake manifold and has to be removed from
below. He wasn’t able to get to the fasteners on the old one, so he
unplugged it, plugged in the new one and zip tied it to some components in
the general vicinity. Not ideal and certainly not what I would have done,
but you know, he’s a grown ass man so he can make his own decisions and
 suffer the consequences, if any.

So he fires the car up and it’s running much better. I would add that I
also replaced some really sketchy wiring on one of the injectors that
looked like it was the old self-destructing stuff. But - he get an alarm
in the dash saying that the battery is low and the battery monitor is
cutting off power to “convenience systems”. Whatever. It sort of freaked
me out a little, so we threw it back on the DAS to run another set of
diagnostics while we went inside and cooled off a bit (nearly 100F heat
 index here today.)

While inside, I did some research on this battery nanny to find that there
are two levels of alert based on how low the battery voltage gets. I
immediately figured it fired off because we had the car sitting on the DAS
with no charger on it for a good 45 minutes, after which he fires it up
with full glow plugs with the new controller, I’m sure. Dogged the battery
 down considerably, I’m sure.

So we look at the results of the diagnostics and find a bang in it about
low battery voltage. I’m sure that’s it.

He takes the car for a short spin and gets it again. Grrr.

I told him to take the car out for a decent drive. He does. Comes back,
battery nanny has retreated and no more alarms.

Re: [MBZ] W211 Nanny Mania

2020-06-28 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
I guess it could be low if the caliper is leaking and not building
enough pressure.  I guess maybe the pump sends pressure individually
rather than an all or nothing situation.

The error was specifically low pressure to that wheel and it gave me the option

the caliper be at fault - the SBC system went through all of the diagnostics
and flagged the system as being bad. Max pressure on the left front was 64
bar, and the minimum was 69 bar, so it failed the pump.

He’s still got brakes, but he said the left front definitely feels weird if he
gets on the brakes. Even if the caliper was stuck the pressure should still be
at or above spec, correct?

This is my first run in with SBC, so I’m not that familiar with it as far as
failure mode.

Worked on the oldest boy’s E320 CDI today. He said the left front brake has
been making noise, but it works and the pads aren’t worn down. Hmm.

Put the car on the DAS and ran a full set of diagnostics. A few bangs, some we
expected, like EGR which is disabled, but a couple for the SBC. Ran the SBC
diagnostics and sure enough, left front pressure is below spec. Explained the
25 year warranty to son, had him do a screen grab of the DAS errors, and
wrapped things up. He’s calling the stealership tomorrow to get the car in for
the SBC to be replaced under warranty.

He decided after many months of it sitting on the shelf to install the glow
plug controller to replace the one on the car that has failed. It’s bolted to
the bottom of the intake manifold and has to be removed from below. He wasn’t
able to get to the fasteners on the old one, so he unplugged it, plugged in the
new one and zip tied it to some components in the general vicinity. Not ideal
and certainly not what I would have done, but you know, he’s a grown ass man so
he can make his own decisions and suffer the consequences, if any.

So he fires the car up and it’s running much better. I would add that I also
replaced some really sketchy wiring on one of the injectors that looked like it
was the old self-destructing stuff. But - he get an alarm in the dash saying
that the battery is low and the battery monitor is cutting off power to
“convenience systems”. Whatever. It sort of freaked me out a little, so we
threw it back on the DAS to run another set of diagnostics while we went inside
and cooled off a bit (nearly 100F heat index here today.)

While inside, I did some research on this battery nanny to find that there are
two levels of alert based on how low the battery voltage gets. I immediately
figured it fired off because we had the car sitting on the DAS with no charger
on it for a good 45 minutes, after which he fires it up with full glow plugs
with the new controller, I’m sure. Dogged the battery down considerably, I’m
sure.

So we look at the results of the diagnostics and find a bang in it about low
battery voltage. I’m sure that’s it.

He takes the car for a short spin and gets it again. Grrr.

I told him to take the car out for a decent drive. He does. Comes back, battery
nanny has retreated and no more alarms.

The W211s are nice cars, but sometimes they make a W123 look attractive.
