There was an update last year (I don't recall when) which required you to
do it then or you would not get future updates.

I don't know why M$ makes it so hard to keep a computer updated. There
should be a limited number of software configurations for a properly
updated, running computer, but they seem to want to start from scratch
every time.

I found info on the windows 7 update error which walked me thru stopping
serviced renaming some files, doing some other command prompt items then
restarting. It’s now checking for updates. It’s possible no updates have been
running on this machine for a while.

the upgrade flew right through.

Kaleb,
Have you checked that you have the latest updates for Win7 before you try to do
the upgrade? Also, it may be that you are upgrading from an Ultimate version,
which is possible, but again, it should end up as Win10 Pro. I've only
upgraded from Win7 Pro 64-bit to Win10 Pro 64-bit and that has worked great on
several PCs.

Kaleb,
Reboot your win 7 computer to safe mode. Then find the option that
lets you
boot it to a previous date when it ran on Win 7. [should be a list of
saved

times when it did backups...
The earlier boot backup will have the Win 7 key and run normally... from
that, recover the key.
Win 10 wants to take over, so when it installs it wipes out the registry,
thus your Win 7 key file to take over..
I hate everything Win 10 does. Personally, I intend to run Win 7 until its
wheels fall off..
Perhaps, by then.. "Win 12 or something will work"...

Now that I think about it the install I used was some sort of

installed on multiple computers.  I used this same install on my

run Belarc on it and get the key off that computer.  Wait nevermind
that wont work because I upgraded that laptop to 10 already.  Crap.  I

restore from backup.   You did   make a backup before you started this,
Right?   Or you have a backup from last week?

there IS a log somewhere on your machine that will have the info about
WHY the downgrade failed.   This log will be destroyed when you restore
from backup.

I have no idea. I have a 2 tb SSD which I just installed not long ago
and everything was running great. It was installing and I left it
along then came back later and it was restarting in windows 7. Just
said installation failed and rolled back the changes. Previous to this
I checked the properties and it said windows 7 was active and genuine.
Now it’s as if the product key is missing and wants me to activate. I
can’t seem to find disc I used which has the key on it. Right now it
keeps say I need to activate now.

When I did it on my laptop it also failed the first time and rolled
back to win 7 but did not have the missing key issue. I just ran it
again and it took on the 2nd time/

What what I read looks like it could be something with an antivirus program.
Only thing that was running on this machine was the Microsoft security
essentials. During the install it says something about it not being compatible
so I disabled it. On 2nd attempt it said same thing. I just installed it and
will try it again and see what happens.

It looks like it installs 10 but then does updates which fail so it reverts

> I'd like to have 64 thinking that I can use the 8 GB of RAM installed.

The 'bitness' of an OS is not a single number. There's half a dozen ways to
measure this,
each with different implications. There have been any number of '32-bit' OS's
in the past
that are quite capable of using more than 4GB of RAM. It's just that no single

There's a lot to be said for using 32-bit processes on a 64-bit-capable

Kaleb,
Reboot your win 7 computer to safe mode. Then find the option that lets you
boot it to a previous date when it ran on Win 7. [should be a list of saved
times when it did backups...

I did the upgrade on my main PC yesterday and it failed for some reason
and reverted back to win 7.  Problem is the registration key seems to
have vanished.  It now says it is not registered. Anybody heard of
this?  I can't locate my win 7 installation cd with the key on it.  I
guess I may end up having to buy windows 10.
