2010-05-13 Thread LarryT
Speaking of projects I came across a heart-breaker the other day. A
mid/late 60s Alfa Duetto 1750 (like the car used in The Graduate) was
sitting in the parking lot of a muffler shop I was visiting. I commented
about the great looking Alfa and was told it was for sale - and could
probably be bought 'right' as it had been For Sale for a couple of years.
That made my ears perk up. So, I start walking toward it and notice it
doesn't look exactly right. Then the guy I was talking to said, BTW, it's
got a Chevy V8, GM AT and a Ford 9 read end. I turned around and started
back toward my car. I don't know why someone would do that to such a great
old classic. If they want an Alfa with a V8 why not get a more common
donor? Now that I think about it maybe I should have asked if the owner
had the original parts! Darn!

2010-05-13 Thread E M
You can always go back and ask about the original parts. If the car has
been there for a couple of years, I'm sure it will be there next week.
Amazing how often parts like, whole engines get pulled, and as they have no
use, or are hard to sell, they just get pushed to the back of the garage or
shed. You might get lucky. If the guy does have all the parts, or most of
them, sounds like an Alfa you might get at good price. Good luck with it.

Yeah, I don't know about the V-12 XKE, but the XJS was notorious for melting
electrical bits, cracked vacuum lines, etc. etc. due to the low hood. The
'70s emissions-control practice of putting cats and/or thermal reactors
under the hood with the engine didn't help much.

2010-05-10 Thread LWB250
I don't know about the later V12s, but the early XJ sedans were normally
aspirated as opposed to fuel injected, and those six side draft Solexs were a
real PITA to keep synchronized.  I know the 1978 model would have been right up
there when it came to pollution control hardware, but I don't recall any
problems related to that with the one I worked on.

Back in the early 80s I worked for a guy who had eight Jags - I spent more time
taking care of cars than I did generators.  His 1978 XJ12 was a nice car, but a
real bear to work on and maintain.  I never had to do one but I heard stories
about having to almost remove the whole front clip to RR the water pump on
that car.

He had a late 60s XKE with the 4.2 liter six that I rebuilt.  That was a BA
car, for sure.

One nice perk - I was allowed to drive any of the cars home in the evening if I
wanted.  The wife and I went out on numerous occasions to the theater and opera
in the XJ12.  The only negative was the gas mileage.  That thing had two 16
gallon tanks for a reason

You jest, but on the other hand someone posted here an eBay auction a few
months back for an SLC with a 617 in it (a 300SLDC?), and that was thought
to be impossible due to the low hood.

If you were going to klatta-ize a Jag, I think it'd be easier to start with
one of the many kits avalable to fit a Chevy 350, and then put in one of the
diesels that can bolt up to the same mounts and tranny, such as a GM 6.5

The 6.2 or 6.5 might fit most places a 5.7 gasser will go, but a 4BT/6BT is a
TALL truck engine. Maybe a 6AT, which I believe is around 3.5-4.0L, and several
inches less tall than a B series?
