I have some good used calipers for a 123. Let me know what you need and I
will check.

You can probably buy used calipers form car-part.com, or buy rebuilts at
FLAPS. I would guess you need rotors. I would for sure replace all the
hoses to the calipers. THose swell shut with age and/or DOT 3 brake fluid.
Most likely you need a new master cyl also. Don't ever put anything BUT
DOT 4 brake fluid in your MB. Unless you switch over to DOT 5. (silicon)
  DON'T use DOT 5e

Thank you sir, appreciate the nudge.

I recently had a 78 240d hauled in from Oregon (to Chicago), super
clean-- brakes are just locked up, and looking around for pads and
calipers, but this is my first vintage mb, so not sure where to look, or
what to buy as things range from ~$70/ea to ~$400/ea on the
 calipers/hardware.

 Any recommendations?

I had good service from rebuilts I got at Advance Auto. I think I paid around
$80 each. I'd gotten them there because I was in a bind and needed calipers
right away.
That was my '83 240D which I then put 30,000 miles on. One caliper did fail but
the guys at Advance swapped me under the lifetime warranty with no hesitation
or problems at all.

For everything else (rotors and pads) I used PBR from Rusty (now Trent) and
again had no complaints. Might as well replace the front wheel bearings while
you've got it apart. You'll want to at least repack them since you have to take
them out to get the rotor off but I figure the bearings are cheap so on a
new-to-me car I'd replace them...

Just had to wait for the weekend for List Mom (Kaleb or K'leb) to sort through
his inbox and approve your first post as a new member. A whole bunch of other
moderated posts, like Max's exhaust pictures, came through at the same time your
posts started showing up. Without the moderation, we were getting too much spam
so now a sender's first post doesn't go through until he approves it.

Caliper prices have more than doubled in the 10 years since I last bought
a pair. A new ATE caliper is $260.
An ATE caliper rebuilt by CARDONE is $102.
An ATE caliper rebuilt by WORLD BRAKE RESOURCES is $69.

I don't know which of the rebuilts is to be preferred.

If you replace calipers in pairs, you don't have to worry about the
manufacturer of the old caliper (ATE or Bendix).
