Re: [MBZ] RESTORED ** 1979 MERCEDES BENZ 300SD ** BUY 4 SHOW         OR AS DAILY CAR!! $8999

2017-04-23 Thread rogerhga--- via Mercedes
Curt,
When I got my Dodge, it was an off lease that had roughly 100,000 miles. It had
been run with dino 10w30, forget the brand. I switched it to Valvoline Maxlife
10w40 for engines with over 75K. Both main seals were dry and I wanted to keep
it that way. But I was tempted at one point and put in Mobil synthetic. As I
said, it did not turn out well, but switching back to Valvoline stopped the
leaks. I change oil and filter on the truck and both diesels around 3-3.5K
miles. The Escape using Mobil synthetic I change at 7500. It uses 1 to 1.5
quarts between change, burns some I guess and leaks some from the valve covers.
I asked the Ford dealership about running a thicker oil, but I was told the oil
ports in the 3.0 V6 are too small to risk running a thicker oil. I think it
uses 5w20 or 0w20, can't remember right off.
My 83 300D has a block heater, but being in the South, I've only used it once
or twice in 20+ years. For some reason, the 300D will start faster at colder
temps than the 300SD even though they have basically the same 617 engine.
Best Wishes,

2017-04-23 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
"My position is that you should use the oil that makes you feel comfortable
regardless of what anyone else uses." certainly the best consideration I could
imagine.
What kind of synthetic did you put in your Dodge? I find that one strange
because its the exact opposite of my experience. My '96 Dakota 5.2l was leaking
a quart in 500 miles out the rear main seal. I switched to Mobil 1 10w30 and
the leak slowed to a quart in 3,000-5,000 miles which I considered acceptable.
It took 10,000 or 20,000 miles for the leak to really dry up but it stayed that
way for another 100,000 miles.
RE: diesels in the frozen north whats really needed is a block heater or a 60x
engine. I never found out how cold it had to be before a 190D 2.2l wouldn't
start. My '98 Jetta TDI is unhappy at -20F but it starts...

Gee guys, don't want to start an oil war. Anyway, if I lived "up North" which I
used to, I would not own a diesel, but that's just my choice. As to the oil,
I've said before, my Indie put synthetic in my 1980 300SD once, it started
leaking a lot, so I returned to him with 2 gallons of Mobil 1 Delvac 15x40 and
he replaced the oil. Shortly thereafter, the leaking returned to the normal
seeping. I also use Mobil 1 Delvac 15x40 in my 1983 300D. The 300SD has over
425,000 miles and has never had the head off or any other engine work. The 300D
has over 360,000 miles and the same applies. I also tried synthetic in my 2001
Dodge Ram 5.9 engine truck. It started to leak out of the front and rear main
seals. I returned it to the Valvoline Max and the seals resealed themselves in
short order. I do run Mobil synthetic in my Ford Escape v-6 which my daughter
gave me. It was run on synthetic for the first 100,000, so I continue to use it
for oil changes.
My position is that you should use the oil that makes you feel comfortable
regardless of what anyone else uses. Your experience will be yours as mine will
be mine.
Good luck and best wishes,

My 617 has been running fine on synthetic for the last 15 years or so. I

average owner will never see any difference in longevity, but cold starts
are definitely easier than with nonsynthetic. Anyway I do not buy the oil

Dan, most of my career was spent as a business process analyst. My background
includes TQM, process management, ISO9000, ITIL, and Six Sigma. Then sprinkle
in software documentation and training along with management and project
management. Although I started out in retail operations management, that only
lasted about 4 years. My wife has pulled me back into retail. I've enjoyed
doing many different things and enjoyed the challenge of trying something new.
A career, like our lives, is a journey...try to make it interesting and

Zundfolge is a bit of a joke among those who troll Craigslist. Its German for
"firing order", the joke is because of the many fools on Craigslist who report
having a "Rare Zundfolge Engine".

Kaleb, I don't know what the zundfogle engine is. Mine is just the last 617
version put in the 116 body. It has some different vacuum functions/connections
for the tranny, plus the glow plug relay is different. And of course it has the
Chrysler servo. These things all changed with the 1981 126 300SD.
It gets around 28 mpg on the highway at 70-80 mph, I have gotten 30 mpg when it
was younger. Around town it probably only gets around 24-26. The ride is what I

You can certainly take credit if you have been using good shops. The
point is that you obviously care about the cars and have provided for
them in one way or another.

2017-04-21 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Roger,

"Zundfogle" is German for "firing order". This was cast in the valve covers
and heads of older MB engines for reference purposes. Sellers who don't know
these cars like we do will often put a reference in their for sale ads about
the "zundfogle" engines, thinking this term means there's something of great
value relative to this.

It's sort of like the folks who refer to the laminated glass windows on the
W140 models as being "bulletproof".

Always gives us a good chuckle

the softer, felt/fleece look carpet, especially for up the console. This carpet
is too harsh. As to the engine blow by and leaks, he may be using that
wonderful synthetic oil. The old 617 turbos of that era don't tolerate
synthetic that well and run better on dino. Yes, he's asking too much, but if
you're interested, offer less and replace the carpet. Unlike the 126 with its
plastic sides hiding rust and poor seat construction (they constantly rip), the
old 116 will last forever. Mine is still going with around 425,000 miles and
yes on dino oil. I've only replaced the tranny at around 420,000 and the
interior as I said about 22 years ago. It still has the original exhaust, IP,
turbo, etc.
Just some personal info to add.
Best Wishes,
Roger

For $8999 one would expect better than that. The carpet up the underside
of the dash is a bit much. He says, "new leather seat covers," but it
certainly is not Benz leather.
