had the form, filled out by the seller/attorney. No-brain counter person took
45 minutes to figure out how to proceed. She redid the thing three times,
called Oly, after her boss was confusing her.

did you not? Else the State uses blue book value. Every time they try

Re: [MBZ] 240D license

2016-09-23 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
If I buy a car here, it cost me:

$75 title transfer
$36 registration
7% sales tax

There is a $225 "administrative fee" for any vehicle being brought into Florida
from out of state. However, if you have a retired registration (a registration
that's no longer in use but wasn't surrendered when the car was sold) it can be
applied to the out of state vehicle, negating the $225 fee. This is a very,
very obscure end run around the statute, but perfectly legal. A very nice and
accommodating DMV employee turned me on to this loophole some years back.

My long gone 1982 300SD serves this purpose, as it's still in the system from
over 15 years ago. Based on the out of state cars I've bought where this has
allowed me to avoid the fee, I figure the 300SD has a current value of a couple
thousand dollars at this point.

Funny I figured MA would be really expensive being one of the more liberal
states around. Ours is $60 every 2 years, the first time you register you've
gotta pay a $75 titling fee and of course the 6.25% sales tax.
When I bought the Jetta it was fined for not having been registered. The guy
made out like it was a big deal but it ended up being only $50, not worth
fighting over...

I just purchased an 86 SDL and wanted it to have vintage plates.  Washington
allows the use of period correct plates or you get the collector plates they
issue.  Their plates are $65, to use your own vintage plate is $35.

That said, the DMV has jacked up all the fees to register your car.

I purchased the R107 and it was tagged as normal car.  Pay the 10% tax, get
some more fees paid and it was on the road like a normal car.  I got some
vintage plates and paid $35 at renewal one year and never have to pay or get
inspected again.  That was a few years ago.

The w126 turned into a prison rape.  I had an affidavit from the seller
(federal prosecutor) as to sales price.  When I went in to register that car,
the dame at the counter disregarded the thing, decided the car was valued at
the magnificent price the state deemed it to be, then charged me a full year as
a standard car, with all fees that entailed, purchase of a new set of plates
(which I did not need), and then the fees to use my own vintage plates, along
with  tax on the actual price I paid.  That was around $200.

Re: [MBZ] 240D license

2016-09-21 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Floriduh has "classic" plates for cars 30 years or older, but the fees are
essentially the same as current plates, and you have to renew annually. Sort
of defeats the purpose, in my mind.

They have "permanent" classic plates, too, but the vehicle has to be older and
not used as a daily driver. Woosconsin had a similar arrangement years ago with
a lifetime (one time) fee and the vehicle couldn't be on the road in January
and February, or something goofy like that. Otherwise you could drive it all
you wanted.

Re: [MBZ] 240D license

2016-09-21 Thread Max Dillon via Mercedes
Our license / registration / taxes for all three vehicles ('87, '95, '96) is
about $12 each vehicle for one year, then $33 each the next year, and keeps
flipping back and forth like that. Red state baby! Regular plates, nothing
special.

The cabriolet I just bought was like $25 to get the title in my name, no taxes
/ registration / licence until I get it running and put insurance on it.
