I hate my local dealerships. You are very lucky to have a dealership that works
with you and is knowledgeable. That's why I use the Classic Center. No
nonsense, fair pricing, fast shipping. Tom Hanson is truly a gem of a person.
He is also a true enthusiast, goes to MB events, and concours. I went to June
Jamboree a couple of years ago and a bunch of us and Tom went out to dinner.
That is what I call a good relationship with a parts guy!

Re: [MBZ] Alt up per bracket 78 240D

2015-01-19 Thread LarryT via Mercedes
Yeah, I've never been crazy about this design - there are so many much
easier methods to adjust alts, Compressors, etc. Speaking of
compressors - I am considering removing this York - the AC has never
worked properly and removing it will provide more room to work in the
engine bay.

It's a 78 240D and it was in poor condition when I bought it. I rebuilt
the engine and it is running great but the tranny is starting to do
strange things and the rust is really taking over in the rockers.I
have considered sending it to the scrap yard but it starts every time i
ask it and it's nice to have it around when I don't want to drive the
911 and my wife has the 91 300D.

I am going in all kinds of directions on this and just can't decide.

Thx

then tighten everything to hold it in place.

The toothed bolt isn't completely vital. You can wedge the alt for tension and

I've made those, and they don't cost me $60. ('course, they were
not pretty and plated, but they worked.)

What we oughta do is get Rich to make up some 14 ga steel strips with
the teeth cut in on his CNC. Then we could just grind out the side,
and weld in the the new teeth. THen we could have WORKING
alternator adjusters.

Seriously, if someone can measure and create a drawing, I have a
friend with a waterjet. It shouldn't cost that much to get him to
cut 20 or so as a production run. I'd take a couple.

You are indeed lucky to have a good stealer. They are few and far between.

The stealer here is such a crook I won't set foot inside. Its a 100
mile trip anyway.

The only dealerships I will deal with now are ones that advertise in
the star for a long time.

When H.K. had his dealership I (and many others) would drive a long
way to go there, but mostly I just bought parts from him over the
phone. H.K had a barn full of obsolete parts that he would let me
pick through, then buy stuff for pennies on the $. There used to be
a long time dealership in Pekin, Il and I used to mail order parts
from them. But they are long gone too.

 Hi Gang -
When trying to adjust my alternator belt I found the upper bolt with the
star around its collar was turning without adjusting the belt.

my lower bracket is ok but the upper has been chewed up. Anyone know where
 I can find one?

 Thx!
