Re: [MBZ] computer question
You would not be happy with the results of doing it that way, no matter how quiet you think it is the mike will pick up background noise. Obviously the phone will ring, doorbell will chime, wife/kids will ask a question, etc - all adds to the background noise - but you'll also get a constant white noise in the background - which will not make the music sound very nice, The others have made great suggestions - try one. I bought a sound card with RCA inputs so I can hook up to my stereo. http://www.amazon.com/Plusdeck-2c-PC-Cassette-Deck/dp/B000CSGIJW Cheapskate that I am, I got an RCA to 3.5mm stereo cable (okay, already had one of them) and connected from my 'good' cassette player with auto-reverse and auto-stop, into my line-in, and set it next to my computer at work. I ran Audacity on my work computer while I was sitting at my desk, just started it run and left it alone until I heard it click off, then I'd stop the recording and swap for the next cassette. Save it off to MP3 and copy it to my computer at home, and viola no more cassettes. You lose chapter splits but otherwise it works fine. There are ways to re-split based on chapters but it wasn't that interesting for me. Gary - I use a program called Rip Edit Burn by Blaze software to copy all mu LP's tapes and any audio source, like say a radio broadcast. It's fairly cheap and has worked well for me. I'm sure there are others. You just hook the output of the cassette player, like say the headphone output, or line outs, to the input jack of your sound card. Once you have saved it as an .wav or mp3 you can easily burn it to a CD or whatever. You need an input of some sort on your computer that you can hook the TAPE MON or MON OUT of a stereo (to which a tape player is hooked) to using the appropriate cables. I have an external USB sound card that has a bunch of inputs and outputs for this sort of thing. I got it some years ago for like $35 at some computer store, I'm sure you can find similar things -- this one is a Creative, I have really liked it. You might be able to use the MIC input of your computer with a mini stereo plug/RCA plug (the red/white round ones on the back of a stereo) adapter cable, not sure how it actually handles the input though. Then you run Audacity, set it to listen to whatever input you are using, start the tape, start recording, then you can do some cleanup of the recording. --R Gary Hurst wrote: i'm trying to avoid inputting the signal by playing it through a speaker and recording it with a mic On Sun, Jul 26, 2009 at 9:02 PM, M. Gary: I used this EZ-Audio kit to make my old vinyls and cassettes into CDs: http://www.amazon.com/Sony-EZAudio-Transfer-Restoration-Kit/dp/B632HA It did a good job. Came with all the cords and connectors necessary, plus software to convert the formats. I used my old cassette player and turntable. To use the turntable I needed a pre-amp but no longer owned a functional receiver. So I bought the cheapest integrated amp that Radio Shack sold (like $25) and it did the preamp job just fine. That was several years ago, and there may be better solutions available now. Good luck, NK -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Re: [MBZ] Computer Question
One of the more annoying recent worms / viruses is evidenced by svchost pegging the CPU after a while (wasn't fully tested, I guess ;). Symantec will clean it so I haven't bothered to see if it really registers as a service, or is just reusing the name svchost. Anyway, I would recommend running a recently-updated AV after a safe boot if this just started (or got worse) recently. Just a thought. -Tim -Original Message- From: Wonko the Sane don.b...@gmail.com Sent: Friday, March 13, 2009 11:29 AM To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Subject: Re: [MBZ] Computer Question http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/what-is-svchostexe-and-why-is-it-running/ On Fri, Mar 13, 2009 at 10:19 AM, Richard Hattaway rhatta...@rocketmail.com wrote: Since I am out of lurk mode briefly, I have a question for the computer literate among us. -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I forgot to mention - the cpu heatsink fins on the Dell 5100 can become clogged with dust. This causes the cpu to overheat and will eventually kill it. If you look thru the fins, you might be able to see the dust clogging them on the inside of the unit. Just to be safe, periodically blow them with compressed air. This is not ideal because it will only redistribute the dust inside the case, but is much easier than taking the case apart to get at them. I suppose you could stick a vacuum hose at the air intake and suck it out instead. Yep, already fixed that issue. It was clogged ( I got it on Craigslist for pocket change ).. shut down after an hour os so of use. When I fixed the dust collection problem ( I took it apart and cleaned it out ) it ran fine. I can always tell when the bootup has triggered the svchost fault.. the fan runs wide open keeping the CPU cool. When the cpu is idling like it's supposed to, the fan is very quiet. Re: [MBZ] computer question (what to buy)
quad core Q6600 - 2.4ghz dual core E8500 - 3.16 Ghz The dual core will be faster as desktop unless you want to multi task and run programs that can run multi threaded or if you are running some kind of server application or games. You always want at least 2 cores because the operating system (especially Windows) will need 1 just for itself. Having more than 2 cores on a desktop is of little use unless you are running software that can take advantage of them. Of course all this will change within the next few years. If you want to run voice recognition, then having more than 2 cores will help. -Dave Walton On Wed, May 21, 2008 at 6:17 PM, Gary Hurst [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: ok, tom has virused up his P4, and now insists on a new machine. so rusty bought him one. naturally, i started crying when i heard about this, as i am still on P4 and G4 standard. sadly, the last p4 i bought was a 2.6mhz a number of years ago, so i ah clueless as to what to get today. seems there are two identically priced options in the world today: quad core Q6600 dual core E8500 for the life of me, i can't figure out which of these i should get. anyone have any opinions? ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] ... Computer Question
Depending on the version of the operating systems, you may just be able to network the two computers and enable file sharing, allowing direct transfer. However, you must be sure that the PC programs involved can read the data -- it may be necessary to save the Mac data in PC format. Any removable media should be readable by both if you use the correct formats -- for instance, burn all CDs as ISO 9600 format (or the one with the funny name), as that is the standard for PCs. The Mac will read and write them all. Much easier if you were going the other way. You can get an external CD writer and use DragonBurn (or something similar) -- it runs under OS 9 as well as OS X, so unless you are dealing with a truely ancient machine, that should do it. Biggest problem may be software -- not all PC programs can see Mac data! Peter

When you replace the board, make absolutely sure you use *all* the motherboard stand offs the board has holes for, they are there to properly support it. In fact, I've taken to adding non conductive / static free foam (similar to what the board sits on when new, but usually that isn't thick enough for support use) underneath all the ATX machines I work on for friends / family / servers to provide even more support. I've cracked two boards completely in half because they were not properly supported and like an idiot I was pressing down to get the card to seat and *snap* Check out both http://www.geeks.com and http://www.newegg.com .. Re: [MBZ] computer question no mb
Your board might be grounding out, power supply is bad or your BIOS is corrupt (Or all of the above). Try taking the motherboard out of the case and place it on a non conductive surface such as a wood board. Plug just the power supply, CPU and memory in. Boot. If a go then go to another computer and download and burn MemTestx86 to a bootable CD or floppy. Attach either drive and boot, run the memtest for a few hours. If no errors then you know you are good so far. Download your newest BIOS from your MB website. Wipe out the existing CMOS according to the exact manual instructions. Reinstall BIOS. Start plugging things in one at a time. Make sure your HD has the correct jumper settings, also if you have another hard disk plug it in the master IDE slot to test to see if the problem is specific to your disk. If you get everything running well outside of the case that means your board is for sure grounding out. Place plastic washers in-between the metal screw mounts in the computer case and the board. Make sure nothing on the board is touching anything metal on the case. GL. Report back when done. A few tips. The power supply and RAM are the two components of the PC where you want to drop the most money and get quality parts, as they are the most volatile components. If you need to buy a new power supply, get an Antec. If you need new RAM, run memtestx86 on it to make sure it is indeed compatible with your board so you can return it. If you drop a few extra bucks on these two components your computer will run very stable regardless of OS. I can take the same ribbon lead and drive plugged into the slave IDE connector and it works fine. At the same time the video seems to have some sort of intermittant connection as it flickers and rolls intermittantly. Sometimes pressing or tapping various places on the M/B seems to either correct the video or make it worse. My question is...is this just caused by a bad M/B or can it be a problem with the CPU? I can get a M/B from PC Liquidators that should work with the CPU for about $30 but that M/B takes DDR memory instead of the PC100 that the ASUS now uses, so I don't want to invest money in another M/B and memory to re-use the CPU if the CPU is faulty. It appears to me from the info that I have been able to dig up that the IDE functions are controlled by the chipset, but I wanted to make sure. I appreciate any info that you folks might have. Upgrade ... to a new Mac? LOL (Laughing Out Loud) Sorry, couldn't help myself. Mac's are great machines. I'd own one if I could purchase all of the software I run for a Mac at a reasonable price. Sounds to me a little like the board may have been damaged, most likely with the addition or removal of a PC card. If pressing or tapping causes a changes it means the print paths have breaks in them. Geeks sells refurbed and used stuff mostly, and they do not currently have a board that will accept your RAM but they have new stock all the time. Microsoft has a version of Virtual PC for the MAC so you can run Windows on it and continue contributing to the Bill Gates retirement fund. -Dave Walton On 1/2/06, Tom Hargrave [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Upgrade ... to a new Mac? Might not be a bad idea if he would actually retire. I would have retired long ago, in his position, but his sort is a different breed. I remember a reporter asking Michael Dell (founder of Dell Computer) why he didn't retire and just enjoy all the wealth he'd accumulated. He said, Do you have any idea how much fun it is to run a multi-million-dollar corporation?

Well next week when apple starts shipping intel based macs it becomes *much* easier to run windows at native speeds on macs. Oh I'll give folks about a week to figure out how to dual boot. I give it about 15 minutes, personally. 15 minutes after the Intel Mac ships, I'll let you know how many Systems I have on it. ;) -- Knowledge is power... Power Corrupts. Study hard... Be Evil.
