Mine is a "Naturally Speaking" for Windows... I am moving files and software to a new
laptop - when I get the "must have" stuff installed I'll check the version..

I have one - came with DVD's and a USB headset. They reduced the price to $29 and I
bought it. My only problem with it (after it "learns" your voice) is
background noise. People talking in the background, the TV, and sometimes my case, my
start dogs barking (my 4 legged door bells). I actually type pretty fast once I kniw
what I want to say...

I checked that out on the 'net. It seems that Dragon Dictate is only for one OS

Dragon is now owned by a different company: Nuance.

Your mistake here is thinking PCI and PCI Express are the same thing. They
aren't.

PCI Express is also known as PCIe, its a much smaller slot. You'll want a PCIe
card.

Your other mistake is overusing the word modem. The only time its appropriate
in your whole email is DSL Modem. Every other time you used it you meant
network card.

A friends Dell P6754yPC desktop computer won't connect to the internet.  I
fixed the TCP/IP but now Window7 says the rj45 modem is bad  (the wireless
modem works okay).  There's a lot of lightning in this area that often takes
out internal modems.
Since the rj45 modem is part of the motherboard, I'm wondering if I can
simply use an Intel PRO/1000 GT Desktop Adapter - PCI - 1 x RJ-45 -
10/100/1000Base-T - Internal modem or equivalent?  This computer is
connected to a DSL modem.

The long motherboard socket where the Intel modem would plug in has one
notch.  The Intel modem has two notches.
Motherboard description lists these slots, one of which is in use by a
wireless modem.

1 PCI Express x16 slot for graphics card
3 PCI Express x1 slots
1 PCI Express x1 minicard slot

Modem description says:

Compatible with x1, x4, x8, and x16 full-height and low-profile PCI Express
slots

I still worked in phone support when PCIe first came out and it was a but
hassle because it replaced PCI-X and many many people thought PCI-X meant PCI
Express. It doesn't, it means PCI eXtended.
I wish they'd called the new standard Quick PCI or PCIQ or anything without an

You would not be happy with the results of doing it that way, no matter how
quiet you think it is the mike will pick up background noise. Obviously the
phone will ring, doorbell will chime, wife/kids will ask a question, etc -
all adds to the background noise - but you'll also get a constant white
noise in the background - which will not make the music sound very nice,

The others have made great suggestions - try one. I bought a sound card
with RCA inputs so I can hook up to my stereo.

Good luck -

http://www.amazon.com/Plusdeck-2c-PC-Cassette-Deck/dp/B000CSGIJW

Cheapskate that I am, I got an RCA to 3.5mm stereo cable (okay, already had
one of them) and connected from my 'good' cassette player with auto-reverse
and auto-stop, into my line-in, and set it next to my computer at work. I
ran Audacity on my work computer while I was sitting at my desk, just
started it run and left it alone until I heard it click off, then I'd stop
the recording and swap for the next cassette. Save it off to MP3 and copy
it to my computer at home, and viola no more cassettes.

You lose chapter splits but otherwise it works fine. There are ways to
re-split based on chapters but it wasn't that interesting for me.

Come on, how hard is it to find a patch cord for two RCA plugs to an 1/8 stereo
plug? Get one, and run it from your tape deck, preamp or receiver to the audio
input on the sound card.

I use a program called Rip Edit Burn by Blaze software to copy all mu LP's
tapes and any audio source, like say a radio broadcast. It's fairly cheap
and has worked well for me. I'm sure there are others. You just hook the
output of the cassette player, like say the headphone output, or line outs,
to the input jack of your sound card. Once you have saved it as an .wav or
mp3 you can easily burn it to a CD or whatever.

Re: [MBZ] computer question

2009-07-26 Thread Rich Thomas
You need an input of some sort on your computer that you can hook the
TAPE MON or MON OUT of a stereo (to which a tape player is hooked) to
using the appropriate cables. I have an external USB sound card that
has a bunch of inputs and outputs for this sort of thing. I got it some
years ago for like $35 at some computer store, I'm sure you can find
similar things -- this one is a Creative, I have really liked it. You
might be able to use the MIC input of your computer with a mini stereo
plug/RCA plug (the red/white round ones on the back of a stereo) adapter
cable, not sure how it actually handles the input though.

Then you run Audacity, set it to listen to whatever input you are using,
start the tape, start recording, then you can do some cleanup of the
recording.

Gary:
I used this EZ-Audio kit to make my old vinyls and cassettes into CDs:

http://www.amazon.com/Sony-EZAudio-Transfer-Restoration-Kit/dp/B632HA

It did a good job. Came with all the cords and connectors necessary, plus
software to convert the formats. I used my old cassette player and
turntable. To use the turntable I needed a pre-amp but no longer owned a
functional receiver. So I bought the cheapest integrated amp that Radio
Shack sold (like $25) and it did the preamp job just fine.

That was several years ago, and there may be better solutions available now.

Good luck,

One of the more annoying recent worms / viruses is evidenced by svchost pegging
the CPU after a while (wasn't fully tested, I guess ;). Symantec will clean it
so I haven't bothered to see if it really registers as a service, or is just
reusing the name svchost. Anyway, I would recommend running a recently-updated
AV after a safe boot if this just started (or got worse) recently.

Just a thought.

I forgot to mention - the cpu heatsink fins on the Dell 5100 can become
clogged with dust. This causes the cpu to overheat and will eventually kill
it. If you look thru the fins, you might be able to see the dust clogging
them on the inside of the unit. Just to be safe, periodically blow them with
compressed air. This is not ideal because it will only redistribute the dust
inside the case, but is much easier than taking the case apart to get at
them. I suppose you could stick a vacuum hose at the air intake and suck it
out instead. Hmmm, I'll have to try that next time...

I have a Dell Inspiron 5100 laptop, running XP pro with half a gig of ram
and a 40 gig hard drive. It works flawlessly most of the time.

I use it primarily for AutoCAD. When it first boots, ACAD is *painfully*
slow. For the experienced cad user, it is devistating. I have already made
three or four moves before the computer wakes up to the fact that I'm there.
It takes forever to catch up.

Looking at the task manager processes list, there is repeated many times
the program svchost.exe. It's used by the LOCAL SERVICE, SYSTEM, NETWORK

program listed in the Processes list. The users are all of the three above
 listed ones.

When the machine is pacing very slowly, I will open the task manager and
find that one of the svchost.exe users is occupying 99% of the CPU. I
simply delete it, the computer goes back to being a screaming demon cad
machine and all is well for the day. I notice no change in anything, no
loss of any capabilities, only marked speed increase. The issue appears
 only on bootup.

Anybody got a clue how I can elimminate whatever is causing this anmomly??
It's no issue to cure, but would be nice to not have to do.

Yep, already fixed that issue. It was clogged ( I got it on Craigslist for
pocket change ).. shut down after an hour os so of use. When I fixed the dust
collection problem ( I took it apart and cleaned it out ) it ran fine. I can
always tell when the bootup has triggered the svchost fault.. the fan runs wide
open keeping the CPU cool. When the cpu is idling like it's supposed to, the
fan is very quiet.

Its a neat old laptop, and great for my purposes.

Thanks all for the help. I will mess with it tomorrow and see if I can
determine what's setting off that service via the info from Don,

Never buy from inventory liquidations. They mark it up to full list or better,
then knock it down 10% a week. I got stuck with $210 in Circuit City gift cards
that I was too stupid to spend before they converted their chapter 11 to a
chapter 7. The best I could do was a 'half off' printer for $199.99, which I
could have bought at Staples for $149.99. There was virtually nothing left in
the store the weekend I bought that printer, just a few printers, a lot of UPSs,
and some still overpriced televisions.

Consumers Reports covered computers recently, if you're interested, I'll
feed their info to you.

I put a lot of stock in what they say, others don't.

Let me know.

quad core Q6600 - 2.4ghz
dual core E8500 - 3.16 Ghz

The dual core will be faster as desktop unless you want to multi task
and run programs that can run multi threaded or if you are running
some kind of server application or games. You always want at least 2
cores because the operating system (especially Windows) will need 1
just for itself. Having more than 2 cores on a desktop is of little
use unless you are running software that can take advantage of them.
Of course all this will change within the next few years. If you want
to run voice recognition, then having more than 2 cores will help.

You first want to see if you can connect the external hard disks to both

use the respective operating systems to copy her files onto and then off

Re: [MBZ] ... Computer Question

2006-04-25 Thread Peter Frederick
Depending on the version of the operating systems, you may just be able
to network the two computers and enable file sharing, allowing direct
transfer. However, you must be sure that the PC programs involved can
read the data -- it may be necessary to save the Mac data in PC format.

Any removable media should be readable by both if you use the correct
formats -- for instance, burn all CDs as ISO 9600 format (or the one
with the funny name), as that is the standard for PCs. The Mac will
read and write them all.

Much easier if you were going the other way.

You can get an external CD writer and use DragonBurn (or something
similar) -- it runs under OS 9 as well as OS X, so unless you are
dealing with a truely ancient machine, that should do it.

Biggest problem may be software -- not all PC programs can see Mac data!

When you replace the board, make absolutely sure you use *all* the

Re: [MBZ] computer question no mb

2006-01-03 Thread Nick Wellinghoff
Your board might be grounding out, power supply is bad or your BIOS is
corrupt (Or all of the above). Try taking the motherboard out of the case
and place it on a non conductive surface such as a wood board. Plug just
the power supply, CPU and memory in. Boot. If a go then go to another
computer and download and burn MemTestx86 to a bootable CD or floppy. Attach
either drive and boot, run the memtest for a few hours. If no errors then
you know you are good so far. Download your newest BIOS from your MB
website. Wipe out the existing CMOS according to the exact manual
instructions. Reinstall BIOS. Start plugging things in one at a time. Make
sure your HD has the correct jumper settings, also if you have another hard
disk plug it in the master IDE slot to test to see if the problem is
specific to your disk. If you get everything running well outside of the
case that means your board is for sure grounding out. Place plastic washers
in-between the metal screw mounts in the computer case and the board. Make
sure nothing on the board is touching anything metal on the case. GL. Report
back when done. A few tips. The power supply and RAM are the two components
of the PC where you want to drop the most money and get quality parts, as
they are the most volatile components. If you need to buy a new power
supply, get an Antec. If you need new RAM, run memtestx86 on it to make sure
it is indeed compatible with your board so you can return it. If you drop a
few extra bucks on these two components your computer will run very stable
regardless of OS.

Subject: [MBZ] computer question no mb

Here's a question for those of you that know the intricate workings in
computers. I have a computer that has a ASUS A7V-VE motherboard and an
Athlon XP1800 + (AX1800DMT3C) CPU. It started having problems a while back
and I just set it aside. I had a few moments today to play with it, so I set
it up and turned it on. I think it has some motherboad problems because if I
plug an IDE cable into the master connector it either won't recognize the
drive is there, or will hang the system. I can take the same ribbon lead and
drive plugged into the slave IDE connector and it works fine. At the same
time the video seems to have some sort of intermittant connection as it
flickers and rolls intermittantly. Sometimes pressing or tapping various
places on the M/B seems to either correct the video or make it worse. My
question is...is this just caused by a bad M/B or can it be a problem with
the CPU? I can get a M/B from PC Liquidators that should work with the CPU
for about $30 but that M/B takes DDR memory instead of the PC100 that the
ASUS now uses, so I don't want to invest money in another M/B and memory to
re-use the CPU if the CPU is faulty. It appears to me from the info that I
have been able to dig up that the IDE functions are controlled by the
chipset, but I wanted to make sure. I appreciate any info that you folks
might have.
