Probably need clothes and toys. You may have a point about 'help'.

In Michigan, if you became a foster parent they would pay you for it.

If you adopted a 'specialneeds' kid, there would be subsidies.
Here, it seems like 'special needs' can include any kid that's too old
for you to have the privilege of teaching him to talk. I believe I
mentioned my niece's adoption (now failed) of a special needs teenager.
IIRC, that subsidized adoption paid $937 a month tax free. Three payments
like that every month and you wouldn't want help from friends.

someone told my now ex wife that the state would give us money because the

Re: [MBZ] Funeral and kids

2007-12-07 Thread Rich Thomas
Some more advice, if you want it. These kids have been through a
considerable trauma, and from your description of their situation prior
to that they have also been kinda out of the mainstream, in ways that
are also traumatic. That is going to weigh heavily on them (and you) as
you work to get them into your proper way of life.

I would suggest checking with your local school system for psychological
evaluations to see how they can/will fit into the school system. I do
not have a lot of faith in public school systems -- the Catholic schools
seem to have a much better success. You might want to see if there are
any around that might want to take on these kids, and they will likely
be very accommodating to the circumstances as far as payments go. That
is a gift to the children.

You might also want to check with the local Dept of Child Services (or
whatever it is called there) about psychological support for the
children. They WILL need that help, and there is nothing wrong with
seeking it or getting it, and it will help make all your lives easier.
There might also be other services for THEM that will help them adjust
and you to take care of them. You are a taxpayer, this is a
taxpayer-funded service, it is not charity so don't think of it as that.

If there are things that people offer you, or want to give for the
children, accept them graciously in the spirit in which they are
offered. You will pay this back many times over to many other people
when you help these children, by whatever means you can provide or comes
your way. It is a loan with a long-term payback, and people are helping
you do it so they will get the benefits back too. My fear is that the
children are not able to overcome these events in their lives, and will
need more intervention as they get older, which will be more difficult
for everyone. Every bit of help is for them, now is better than later.
Kids are very resilient but they need lots of help to be that way, as I
am sure you know.

Best wishes for all. Your Benz community is supporting you.

Take a close look at the dependency rules. IRS has a checklist for this.

If they were born this month, you'd be supporting them the whole time they
were alive this year and would claim them on your 2007 return. If you
shared custody with your ex who had them for 11 months, your ex would
claim them. If you adopt or become a foster parent after the year is
more than half over, I'm not sure how it works.

Kaleb,
Keep all receipts for the expenses associated with taking care of the
children and Regina from the phone calls, flight to Maine return to OK etc.
If you end up adopting them the Gov't gives a hefty tax credit for the
adoption process with receipts as backup. When we adopted our youngest, the
process did not cost us a thing. Airline tickets etc. will qualify. It could
make the financial situation easier if/when you adopt.

Kaleb and Regina are getting hit with some expenses now - three more
plane tickets, and presents for three more under the tree in 2½ weeks

Take a close look at the dependency rules. IRS has a checklist for this.

If they were born this month, you'd be supporting them the whole time they
were alive this year and would claim them on your 2007 return. If you
shared custody with your ex who had them for 11 months, your ex would
claim them. If you adopt or become a foster parent after the year is
more than half over, I'm not sure how it works.

Re: [MBZ] Funeral and kids and then some!

2007-12-07 Thread Wonko the Sane
Forgive me for not trimming my post -- difficult to do on this old laptop.

Here is the situation as I see it. We lost Marshall, and will admit that I
got a little emotional. We had exchanged emails during the last months --
blatently honest -- and although I knew the end was coming, the end was
still not easy.

Now, we have a new situation. Three young kids who were born into what is by
definition a bad situation.

I suggest we honor Marshall,
an educator of diverse talents, by rearing a new generation, three recent
additons to OkieLand
with dozens of step-grandparents (all of whom smell slightly of #2
diesel and Mobil 1).

I loved Marshall (in a non-gay sort of way) and can think of no better
legacy to him than channeling our efforts to the next generation. Marshall
was by no means a shallow man -- he understood that we are all temporal and
it is the next generation that has to carry on, and they have to be trained
to change their fuses.

Money diverted to cancer research is important. By gene pool, I will most
likely die of that. But anything we can contribute there is a drop in the
bucket, while real dollars can change some young lives who have endured more
already than I have in 5+ decades (and my life has been sort of ugly at
times).

whom I never met but learned was an exceptional person. He must
 have been,
especially since all of you guys are united in quoting him..
 (CHANGE THE
 FUSES).

Just as he seemed (I gather) to have been quite an influence and
 contributor
to this list, a mentor, seeing you guys rally around Kaileb and
 Regina kinda
makes me feel that in a way you guys are perpetuating the spirit of
 Marshall.

SO... in being supportive of this couple in OK, their kids and the
 three new
additions to their family, aren't you indeed paying quite a tribute to
 Marshall?

 My humble opinion.

 Thanks
 T

Ok, Shut up and just allow us to do something for somebody we all
like on this list. We feel like crap for not being able to do
anything of personal virtue about Marshall, it pains us that Regina
has suffered a huge loss, and this is our way of doing something, no
matter how small. When something shows up in the account, ignore it,
just let it gather interest. One day soon you will find a burning
need for it (sooner than you imagine) and there will be some of the
love and support from the folks on this list to help you meet that
 need.

Kaleb,
Keep all receipts for the expenses associated with taking care of the
children and Regina from the phone calls, flight to Maine return to OK etc.
If you end up adopting them the Gov't gives a hefty tax credit for the
adoption process with receipts as backup. When we adopted our youngest, the
process did not cost us a thing. Airline tickets etc. will qualify. It could
make the financial situation easier if/when you adopt.

Mitch is right that the federal dependency rules are tricky. I'm an
accountant by training, among other things, and it's been a couple of
years since I did any individual income taxes other than my own---but
I'm 99% sure the question in this case boils down to who provided the
majority of the support for the minors during the calendar year,
rather than who was supporting them on December 31st. So Kaleb
Regina can't claim the three new ones as dependents on their 2007
return, but (assuming the kids don't end up living with someone else)
they _will_ be able to claim them for 2008. That makes for a nice fat
exemption!

Usual disclaimers, plus I don't know anything about Oklahoma state income tax.

Three
 payments
like that every month and you wouldn't want help from friends.

If you get the kids you are going to want to keep them. Adoption gives you more

Good luck to you. It will be a challenge, a big one no doubt, but the
satisfaction of providing a stable life for those children will outweigh
the difficulties (though it will not seem like it).

You might want to look into a name adjustment for the older one, aside
from Homeland Security interest at the airport, it might attract more
interest from those familiar with its origins.

You'll do it and look back on the pleasures of having had the opportunity

Thank you, Kaleb. You and Regina are doing the right thing for the
children. They need to be with family - someone who can really love them.
It'll be hard at times, I'm sure, but you'll be blessed many times over.
  I
can feel better about the children, now. Thank you.
