Heat it with a propane torch but cut the brake hose first. Shouldn't be
an issue if you are replacing the hoses anyway. If you don't cut the
hose, you run the risk that it will blow off. You can guess how I know that.

I have been working on the 300SD this afternoon and now have all four

access all four brake calipers and blow the brake fluid out of the brake
fluid reservoir and all of the lines so I can remove and replace all four
brake lines and then fill and bleed the brake system.

I ran into a snag, however, with the right-rear caliper. The bleeder
screw on the left-rear is 8 mm and that blew out very nicely (and
drained the front compartment of the brake fluid reservoir). I then
switched to the right-rear caliper and tried to loosen the bleeder screw
with the 8 mm box-end wrench (0.31496") and it spun, probably rounding
the hex some. I tried 7 mm (0.27559"), but that was too small. I tried
5/16" (0.3125") and that spun. I then tried a small vise grip (which has
sharp "teeth" on the jaws), and that slipped. I squirted the threads of
the bleeder screw with Kroil and then came into the office to write this
email while the Kroil does its work.

We will see if that works.

Do you use anti-seize on them or is that not advisable?

While it’s more of a preventative thing, I always make sure I have the rubber
caps for bleeder screws. I keep some on hand to replace missing ones.

Re: [MBZ] More jackstand overkill ...

2023-09-20 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Old muzzle loading guns come in 2 basic flavors, flintlock and caplock. Caplock
guns use a percussion cap to ignite the powder, percussion caps are little
copper or brass cups with some goop that explodes when the hammer hits it. The
thing the cap sits on is a "cone" or more commonly a "nipple". They look like a
squared off grease fitting and on old guns are very often stuck and some are
stuck bad.

One of the worst I've ever worked on was an old side by side shotgun with a
muzzle that looked like it had been stored in a lake. The cones were pretty
beat up and wanted replacing, I soaked them in oil for a few weeks, tapped on
them, heat, oil, tap, repeat. After a couple weeks I finally resorted to vice
grips and, happily, they both came out. Patience is the key when removing stuck
things...

After waiting for the Kroil to take effect, I rapped the end of the
bleeder screw lightly with my small hammer and tried the vise-grips again.
After a couple of tries, it broke loose.

So now I can take both of the rear bleeder screws to a parts store and
see if I can get a good bleeder screw.

Thank you for the suggestions.

IIRC, heat also helps loosen rusted threads, though I guess the Kroil will burn
off now if you hit it with a torch. Could make a mess of things. If it comes to
it, if it breaks off, drill it out and use an "EZ-out" (or whatever they call
those things) to get it out and replace it with a new bleeder valve.

Don't forget to hit the bleeder screw with a hammer as if it were a
nail.
Helps jar things loose, but just thump it once, don't beat it into
something non bleeder shaped.
