Thanks, Dan! I am happy about it.

I am going to sell my current 7 series. I have a feeling it might take a
while. Not that many folks are interested in a 15 year old BMW with 217,000
miles.

As far as pictures, sure I can send some. They are the pictures from the
seller's listing. I'm hoping when it gets here that I will have a weekend to
do some Martha Stewart detailing.

Congrats, Donald, glad you found something you like. Sounds like a nice
example. So what are you doing with your existing 740?

As I opined earlier today, I think part of my problem is my past luck in
finding nice, well kept examples cheap. As I expand my search I'm finding that
the decent ones are north of $5,000, more than I had been previously
considering. Looks like it's time to open the wallet and accept that the ones
I have were anomalies due to luck or circumstance.

There are two what appear to be nice prospects I'll be looking at this weekend.
Maybe I'll get lucky as well. If not, I'm sure the right car will eventually
come my way.

I would have bought a 140 (97-99). But, like Dan they are very hard to find.
When I did find one they were either turds or they wanted WAY too much for
them. Plus, I have really enjoyed my current 7 series. I think the 98-2001
Bmw is the best one they made. They fit me well and look good.

charge at the dealer to reprogram them. Funky engine control problems will
drive you nuts as well -- intermittent no-start with no cause, flaky crank

These are as bad as the W140s, which is NOT a recommendation for ownership --
most people dumped them at the end of the lease or the extended warrenty.

WOW! Thanks for the vote of confidence. I just replaced my battery at my
indy's and we reprogrammed windows and locks in about 20 seconds - no charge.
I don't know why you have to do that, but evidently its done after replacing
the battery. Based on my research on the BMW forums, I think you are mistaken
about the cost of these repairs. The reliability went up fairly dramatically
after the 97 model year.

By the way, I talked to the service manager about this car. He knew the car.
He knows the previous owner. The guy took exceptional care of the car.
Evidently, he was a little neurotic and wanted the radiator cap replaced at
every oil change. All work from new was done at the dealer. Including the
Inspection II that was done less than 9,000 miles ago. This is a dealer service
that costs between $800-1200 plus anything things that it needs. At this
inspection, the dealership checked a ton of stuff (too much too list) and did
the following:

Changed rear differential fluid, flushed braked fluid, flushed power steering
fluid, flushed coolant, replaced plugs, replaced all filters, and checked,
inspected and lubed a WHOLE bunch of other things. So, Im pretty happy with
the car. The previous owner was very anal and everything has been done.

Its better to be lucky than good. Actually, I usually spend quite a bit of
time trying to find the right car. I had searched for 7 series BMW's for quite
a while. I also looked at 5-6 of them. I communicated with 4 sellers of them
on ebay before settling on this one. I'm not claiming that I knew the service
history of this car before I bought it. BUT, I operate under the assumption
that if a luxury car is in very good cosmetic shape then the owner has been
equally diligent about mechanical condition. I probably miss out on some
really great cars in terms of their mechanical condition because some people
just don't care about cosmetic issues. AND I might get burned one day by a car
that is excellent cosmetic shape and has been neglected on maintenance. BUT, I
think with cars that originally cost a lot of money, the owners who take care
of the cosmetic issues also take care of the maintenance.

I think there's still good reason to stay away from the V12s in both.
Otherwise I wouldn't have seen a 750iL advertised locally for $2000 in 1996.

I think there is plenty of anecdotal information as well as direct examples of
the issues with the V12 models.

It can also be explained by the limited number of them that are out there.

If they had any semblance of reliability you would see a lot more of them
around, and the values would be significantly higher

I suspect you will like it a lot less when the $3000 convenience relay box
goes out and the windows won't work (hopefully, with all of them up), or the
door locks fry -- $500 each and four hours labor, and then a big ol charge at
the dealer to reprogram them.

Funky engine control problems will drive you nuts as well -- intermittent
no-start with no cause, flaky crank position sensors (can only be reached from
below, blind, on top of the bell housing), etc.

I hope it's a long time before you have trouble!

These are as bad as the W140s, which is NOT a recommendation for ownership --
most people dumped them at the end of the lease or the extended warrenty.

I am the proud new owner of a 2000 BMW 740iL. This car is really amazing. I
have not driven an S Class of similar vintage. But, having driven and enjoyed
this car for a few days, I am really impressed. I had a previous 7 series.
But, this car is so much more refined and capable than that previous car. I
don't know if it is just because it is 5 years newer or because of all the
extra luxury touches or if it is just because the owner really took care of
it. The suspension is amazing. The engine is amazing. I am really enjoying
this car.

It is black and it is going to be a pain to keep clean. But, I sure do like
it.

I know BMWs, like all German cars, are notorious for hatching electrical
gremlins as they age, but I'm still surprised to hear that. Generally the
BMW aluminum V-8s have had a great reputation (once they worked out the
issue with the self-destructing Nikasil blocks early on). Nothing like the
timing chain problems in the 3.8 liter Mercedes, or the Audi V-8 that was
made of two VW GTI 16-valve fours joined at the crank and was more
troublesome than either would have been separately.

Don't worry. You will be fine so long as nothing breaks.
Even if it does, you cannot be into the car for all that much. Sell it
for scrap, walk away and call it depreciation. Wouldn't be any worse
than on a new car of some other sort.

AND we all know you won't keep it 6 months anyway so what are the odds

A good 140 is at least as reliable as a good 300D from a starts every

it is finally what a 124 was supposed to be. The biggest single

Ok, it is really not a new car, and I actually bought it 4 years ago,
but it was seriously neglected. As I reconstructed its past, it was
sold new at Autohaus Dallas, then went through the Dallas charity
sale that Rich used to post on here. Some guy in Memphis shipped it
there, put a new battery in it and put it on fleabay. I bought it
off fleabay, and it was worse than described, so it has been a long
haul getting it decent. I paid too much for it, but it is smoke
silver with burgundy interior, and that is the only combination I
ever got attached to other than NOT black and NOT white...

Anyhow, it drives great! light and agile, but stable! It may be the
best handling 124 I have ever driven. It is the only one that i had
to go through all the suspension.

Now the SDL needs ball joints and steering idler bushings...

I'd highly recommend doing all the rear and the subframe mounts at
once, and all the front end at once. Time and other resources didn't
allow me to do it all in once, but it is finally ready for the road!
