Re: [MBZ] New rubbers
The AWD vehicles I owned (320ML) had no freewheeling of any wheels at any time. Same with the current Subaru. The donut wheel/tire is for limited use - just enough to get you to a tire shop, and to be driven at a low speed. I don't know what the tire diameter difference tolerance is, but I can see the tire shops not replacing one tire for liability reasons - they don't want to be replacing differentials. Spares are scary on W163s, as they’re tough to get at, even worse if the car has been north of the Mason-Dixon Line. They hold a lot of road cruft, which comes down on you when you drop the wheel out of the carrier. -D > On May 13, 2022, at 11:43 AM, Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes > wrote: > > It rides not so much like a truck now which is really surprising. Re: [MBZ] New rubbers
There are some AWD cars where the variance between wheel rotation can be enough to make the nannies mad if you have a big difference in diameter. I think Subarus are one of the offenders, if I recall. I don’t think the W163 MLs care - it’s more of a mechanical system than electronic, so while wheel/tire rotation is monitored, I don’t think it affects anything as far as nannies are concerned. When I got my former ML500 the right rear tire was really bad from a wear standpoint, I never figured out why. I thought it might have had a bad bearing, but if it did someone had fixed it. My tire guy didn’t care about one tire. He agreed the other three were in excellent shape and had little wear. -D > On May 13, 2022, at 11:19 AM, Allan Streib via Mercedes > wrote: > > A potential problem with 4WD/AWD vehicles is that some shops will refuse to > install less than 4 new tires. It rides not so much like a truck now which is really surprising. These tires must have much softer sidewalls. Even coming down my driveway that is sorta rough with some big tree roots, it was a noticeably less rough ride though still the truck aspect came through. I wonder what it was like new. I think maybe it had Michelins on it? I’ll have to look at the spare. I saved one of the take-offs I’ll get on the spare since it is an original tire. Re: [MBZ] New rubbers
A potential problem with 4WD/AWD vehicles is that some shops will refuse to install less than 4 new tires. They claim that there's enough difference in diameter on the old tires, either due to wear or because different brands are slightly different. I'm 50:50 on whether it's a scam. I'd say replacing a fairly new tire with one of the same brand and size should be OK. And AWD normally only engages if the drive wheels are turning faster than the free wheels (i.e. slipping), so as long as the new tires are on the drive wheels it should generally be OK? 4WD should only be used on loose/slippery surfaces so it should not be an issue either. And there's no way that the donut spare most cars come with is going to be exactly the same diameter as the full-service tires but for some reason that's not a problem? Re: [MBZ] New rubbers
It still drives/rides like a truck, I’ll bet. But good tires (weird size, limited offerings) do make a difference. My former ML had Kumhos or some Asian brand. Luckily, my tire guy could get them as I only needed one when I got it. I need to look at what’s on the 2003 ML350. They’re in good shape, but never noticed the brand. -D > On May 13, 2022, at 10:46 AM, Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes > wrote: > > For the 05ML500 > > I ordered a set of Kumho Krugen tires from Amazon in the right size (they are > not real common) and got them installed today.
