I did an iron butt yesterday. 1050 miles in one day.

So it is your daughter's car. I do sort of recall something on those lines.

I used to do things like from here to Chicago in a day but not any more.

My elder son moved to Ottawa last summer and I would like to drive out
there once but I think I will need a minimum of 3 days each way. It is
roughly 1300 miles from Winnipeg.
We went by air in September and that was easy. Something like 2 and 1/2
hours in the air sure beats 3 days in the car.
And, of course, if you factor in the cost of fuel, meals, rooms etc, it
probably did not cost any more than driving would have.

Pull the clip and pop the hose out. No need to get under for the oil drain, it
just pops right off. You and also get the feed from up top, its just a blind

Other than that, and crawling under to take loose

Chain has maybe 1/2 ยบ stretch or less.
Essentially it is negligible stretch. Some good

Guess I shoulda started pulling the timing chain guide rail pins on
the head earlier. Top one came out ok. Bottom one is recessed in
the head. That way it collects water and induces that good ol steel
to aluminium chemical bond. It appears to have no separation between
the pin and the head. I did try soaking and beating, but still broke
the bolt. I was able to turn out the broken bolt.

I'm not sure the goos ol mopar rust eater will help on this one.
Because it is steel to alum chemical bond, not even the mopar stuff
eats that. But I think it does help to berak it free, along with
flame wrench or wicked beating.

Is that pin supposed to be recessed in the head, or did someone push

One old bicycle mechanic's trick for stuck aluminum seatposts in steel frames
was to turn it upside down and pour the seat tube full of ammonia. IIRC it
wasn't very good for the aluminum seatpost, but it got it out of the frame so
you could stick another one in.

I'll probably think of something else tomorrow.

Special message to Max and anyone else who has recently BTDT:

Looks like I get to change my first OM 603 head gasket. SDL has oil
smoke, and oil running out the exhaust. Turbo compressed air outlet
to the crossover pipe is clean as a whistle, so no turbo failure.

So, I need the obvious:
head gasket kit
head bolts (or carefully measure stretch)
valve seals
turbo seal kit if not included in the head set (orings for drain,
gasket for supply)
Injector nozzle heat shields (if not in head kit)
Hose and a plastic bag to seal up nozzle holders and DV unions in
lieu of a dozen capplugs of the right size.

Things that I probably don't need as they are recent:
valve cover gasket
injector line clips
Timing chain and guides

Things I may need:
17 head or 22 head (have one in Boston. Just need to get it west)

Anything I am missing on these three lists?

Any special tools needed aside from the special socket for the head
bolts?

I may be taking the head off Fri or Sat. I won't get it back on
until Christmas time.

From the pics it looks like you might have been able to wire the
timing chain to the cam sprocket and leave it sit when you pulled the

I don't think it is a triple square. Is it a 12 point 10 mm?

I found a cheapo set made of 1/2 hex stock at oreally? I am not
thrilled, but I hope they do to get the bolts out. Nothing at HF,
but I am sure I saw them at HF before. Maybe I just did not find
them.

I had a snappy socket. Big bucks. I thought it was in my tool box,
but it is not. Wonder where it went? I may be looking for a snappy
truck

Its a triple square aka XZN bolt. I used the cheapo set from autozoo
to pull mine and then the proper socket set came in from zdmak in
time to put it back together.

Behind the injector pump is a coolant connection
with a 32mm nut at the head and a metal keeper
clip. Is it taking off by pulling the keeper and
sliding out an oring connection? Or, do you take
the nut(bushing) out of the head?

Other than that, and crawling under to take loose
the oil supply and turbo oil drain, the trans
cooler lines and lower radiator hose, then I am
ready to pull the head bolts.

Chain has maybe 1/2 ยบ stretch or less.
Essentially it is negligible stretch. Some good

Yes I wired the chain to the sprocket. It does require two people

What about the chain guide on the IP side? After the pins are
pulled, can it be slid out before the head is pulled? I am not
worried about the banana rail the tensioner pushes on.it'll stay put
as the head goes off and on.

The cracks I have seen in OM603 heads were between valve seats and from valve
seat to pre-chamber.

Also, don't forget the hydraulic compensator bleed down for each used lifter
that you install.

Did anyone mention that the cam-shaft bearing bolts have to be removed and
installed in a specific sequence, engine at TDC for #1 cylinder? RTFM.

New copper nuts for the exhaust manifold.
Injector return line.
Gallon of fresh coolant if it's time.
New fuel filter.
Think about changing the oil immediately after you've run the new head a bit.
.001 dial gauge to check valve guide play.
Valve spring compressor and magnet to get the keepers out. I rigged up
something using the OM606 injector tool, which has a nice hole in the side.
Will send picture off list. Forceps was nice for putting the keepers back.

I'll probably think of something else tomorrow.

Head gasket kit from Rusty had new injector seals, new o-ring for turbo drain.
Supply line for turbo needs no gasket.

2012-11-22 Thread dave walton
Yes. Weak point in front of #1 cylinder leaks oil into cylinder when it
blows. If you don't catch it soon enough it will bend the #1 connecting
rod. Can use dial gauge to measure distance pistons protrude from head at
top of stroke. You have to pull engine and transmission together, then
remove transmission to get to the bottom end.

Specifications during reassembly say to torque head bolts wet as I recall.

Dr. Booth was proponent of using Hylomar on the head gasket.

Specifications during reassembly say to torque head bolts wet as I recall.

Rolf,

What is the theory of using a 606 head gasket instead of a 603
headgasket on a 603?

A head gasket for a NA 606 set would explain why there was no gasket
for the turbo. By definition, no turbo on a NA 606.

I have never used anything except a light coating of oil on head gaskets.

Depending on how it goes, you might need the ball bearing thrust washer pin
puller for the chain guides. Might not since you indicate that you've
replaced them recently. I found that my usual bolt, stack of washers and a
socket did not work on the 603 head. New valve guides might be needed as
well ---
Be carefull pulling it all out if you leave the turbo attached to the head

in strange ways that make it a challenge to re-assemble. BTDT.

I think Rolf said the 606 turbo head gasket is preferred.

I used the kit from Rusty, only thing missing was gasket for turbo oil drain to
block. However, every other time I drive the car, the upper radiator hose gets
pressurized. Head was pressure tested by machine shop. I may try tightening
the head bolts.

Brought that along this trip. I figured this head is longer and more

I have managed so far with sockets and washers etc.

I am not sure how much i will leave in the car and what I will leave
on the head. I'm thinking the turbo may be best to leave hang on the
exhaust pipe. But I can remove the drain tube and supply tube first.

Re: [MBZ] OM 603 head gasket

2012-11-21 Thread Peter Frederick

Some notes from my head gasket job a couple years back:

Make absolutely sure that oil supply pipe is free of the block when
you attempt to remove the head, mine leaked after straightening it
back out, never did get fixed (car was wrecked soon after).

You need all new head bolts, if you re-use them they always fail to
keep the gasket sealed. Gas engines are fine, the diesel is not.

Absolutely check the valve guides, they are a known weak point. Easy
to fix. Make absolutely POSITIVE that the machine shop installs them
to factory specs (very little clearance) -- it's common around here to
want them very sloppy for some reason. I got a rebuilt head with at
least 0.010 side clearance, had to have the job redone before we
could use the head (and new valve seats to boot).

For just a gasket change, leave the injectors in, don't clean the
pistons, and don't clean the head except in the seal area. Knocks
like crazy for a couple days if you shine it all up. If you need to
check for cracks, clean it, otherwise leave the carbon on.

You can leave the turbo and exhaust manifold in place, much easier.
However, you should also check the turbo for condition -- if there is
ANY front to back play or roughness in rotation, the bearings are
shot. It' not impossible for the front seal to be OK and the rear to
leak, the damage is usually done by coked oil on the main shaft and it
can eat out the rear seal first.

Good luck -- your car will run MUCH better after you put the new
gasket in. I need one as well, but it will have to wait until I get
the suspension fixed, I'm out of free cash.

you attempt to remove the head, mine leaked after straightening it
back out, never did get fixed (car was wrecked soon after).

You need all new head bolts, if you re-use them they always fail to
keep the gasket sealed. Gas engines are fine, the diesel is not.

Absolutely check the valve guides, they are a known weak point.
Easy to fix. Make absolutely POSITIVE that the machine shop
installs them to factory specs (very little clearance) -- it's
common around here to want them very sloppy for some reason. I got
a rebuilt head with at least 0.010 side clearance, had to have the
job redone before we could use the head (and new valve seats to
boot).

However, you should also check the turbo for condition -- if there
is ANY front to back play or roughness in rotation, the bearings are
shot. It' not impossible for the front seal to be OK and the rear
to leak, the damage is usually done by coked oil on the main shaft
and it can eat out the rear seal first.

Good luck -- your car will run MUCH better after you put the new
gasket in. I need one as well, but it will have to wait until I get
the suspension fixed, I'm out of free cash.

Peter

Thanks.
About carbon and cracks: My experience is that the cracks show up in
the carbon- IF you can keep it dry. So, I like to inspect the head
with all the carbon in place. Keeping it dry is the hard part.
Knowing where to look for cracks is also a good thing to know. Aside
from the prechamber to the valves, as in the iron heads, I am not
sure where else cracks on the aluminum heads.

Re: [MBZ] OM 603 head gasket

A bad head gasket makes oil smoke? Oil from the oil passages gets into the
combustion chambers?

Looks like I get to change my first OM 603 head gasket. SDL has oil smoke,
and oil running out the exhaust.

Anything I am missing on these three lists?

 Piston rings?
