Re: [MBZ] Something you don’t see often
I think every other year the trip home was free and one year my dad found out we could go all the way around first class for the same money as the usual layover in Europe, so it was Cathay Pacific and Singapore Airlines up front Riyadh Hong Kong Manila Singapore Taipei Honolulu Portland or something like that. Sometimes upstairs, sometimes down. I recall driving the electric model car we bought in Hong kong back and forth across the area in the nose ahead of the first row for 13 hours into HON. It would hit the wall, then flip over and drive back. PanAm had a direct DHA to LaGuardia or similar and one time it had about 30 people on it. They turned the lights off for the rear 1/3 of the plane and we just slept back there, one person to a row in the middle 5 seat section with the armrests up. Those seats also fold forward and make a pretty good card table. A different time in London they boarded us then said uh we have a mechanical issue and kept us on the plane at the gate for 5 hours while they bolted an extra engine on one wing. There is an extra pod built in for ferrying engines around. So we flew across the atlantic with three engines on one wing and two on the other, to MSP or somewhere. Probably the most enduring 747 memory I have is waking up in Frankfurt watching the nose of the NWA 747 I was supposed to be on backing away from the gate. Unfortunately or fortunately as it turns out my dog was on the plane and the gate crew lady who had redone all the dry ice freight scheduling to accommodate the dog in the hold on that flight was still standing at the gate. She took one look at me and started hollering into her walkie talkie in German "the dog!! The Dog!". They brought it back. I was like 15 wearing the same suit I graduated from 9th grade in about 18 hours before. Man I got some puzzled looks walking onto that plane. When I think about the stuff my parents did with us it seems kind of crazy now. Back in the 1950s, my dad had to babysit a couple of nukes we gave to the Brits. Being of low rank and high security clearance sometimes gets you interesting, if unwanted, duties. Somewhere between Barksdale and the UK, they had to land on an island base for refueling. Their emergency plans for "if we go off the end of the runway into the ocean" included a member of the flight crew (navigator I think) chucking the triggers out the door on dry land. Pilots got the plane stopped with dozens of feet to spare. On 2021-07-17 01:44, Clay via Mercedes wrote: I got to watch the test flights out of Paine Field in winter 1969. Re: [MBZ] Something you don’t see often
Holy bat droppings, someone regularly flew a 747 into Guatemala City? Yipes, I'll never forget that landing in a 727 in 1966. Flying up a ravine watching the ground rise FAST and more and more and more flaps kept coming out of the wing. Probably had to use 90 degrees of flap to land a 747 there. Did for a 727, all three sections out of the wing. Pretty impressive for early 1960's engineering! That runway is 6700 ft above sea level I think, higher than Denver. And short. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] Something you don’t see often
I flew first class on the upper deck a few times on BA transatlantic flights. That was very nice as there were few seats up there, it was like a little club. This was long before 9/11 so the pilots would leave the cockpit door open and welcomed short visits to the flight deck. The bevvie selection was always quite Impressive too. I had no issues with extensively sampling the offerings... start off in the Concorde lounge then roll onboard champagne glass in hand... the way airline travel should be... I noticed early on that most of the passengers in business and first were pretty much assholes and were not particularly pleasant travel companions so I made it a point to chat up the FAs and hang with them some on the longer flights. It’s amazing how much better the experience was and how much fun it was to have those interactions with regular folks doing what was mostly a pretty boring job. Not to mention that won a bit of special treatment which some of the other passengers noticed... --FT Sent from iPhone > On Jul 16, 2021, at 7:30 AM, dan penoff.com via Mercedes > wrote: > > I flew them regularly to Europe (KLM) and Asia (Northwest) in business > class. I flew them regularly to Europe (KLM) and Asia (Northwest) in business class. I’ve never flown in a 747 in coach, thank goodness. One of the best flights I had in one, a -400 variant, was on a flight to Schipol (Amsterdam) from Chicago. About 20 minutes into the flight my seat back broke. The purser came up and was all pissed off because they apparently put an emergency repair order in during the turnaround in Chicago and the FBO folks claimed to have fixed it. Apparently not. First and business were full, so they told me I could go to coach on the main deck. Nope, sorry, not an option for what the company was paying. The cabin crew huddles, the purser goes into the flight deck and comes back out. “Would you come with me, please?” Since it was a trans-Atlantic flight there was only one crew on board, so the crew bunk room on the upper deck just behind the flight deck was unoccupied. They let me crash in there for the remainder of the flight. It was a little cramped, but far more comfortable as I got to lay down in a bunk and watch the movies. They were very apologetic and kept bringing me all sorts of goodies to eat during the flight (I never drink when I fly, especially on business.) Even got a really good nap or two in, too. Best flight ever. -D > On Jul 16, 2021, at 6:19 AM, Peter Frederick via Mercedes > wrote: > > Yeah, that 747 was something else. > > I had the best and the worst seats in Tourist class on a trip to Germany -- > back in those days you got your seat assignment at checkin, and I had lots of > time in Chicago on the way over.
