Hi Everyone,

Good News: We have moved MeteoriteTimes to a new hosting company and have
plenty of room to archive years of old issues.

Bad News: We were not able to recover our old mailing list.

For everyone whom was on or would like to me on the MeteoriteTimes mailing
list,

please subscribe here http://meteoritetimes.com/mailing_list/?p=subscribe

Thank you!

Paul and Jim

Hello all. We are just wondering what happened to the
findmeteorites.com website? Apparently it has been
down for sometime now. Steve Arnold IMB, Michael
Blood, someone care to comment? Quite a few people
paid in advance to advertise on this website and it is
rather troubling to find that it is no longer a valid
URL.

Thanks!

To Proud Tom,

I welcome being included in your fun. Please feel free to make fun of me,

DO NOT ATTACK THE FRIENDSHIPS THAT WE HAVE WITH ALL OUR METEORITE FRIENDS

Please come up with a least a cleaver statement from Jim and Paul that
makes fun of us but is not
mean and unthoughtful to our friends.

I will NOT tolerate the statement left as is. Please correct as soon as

Hello Everyone,

My typically long show report is finished, and should be up on my column
at MeteoriteTimes shortly.

I won an item I believe at the Lang auction, if someone who has their
e-mail address handy could forward this e-mail to themI would
appreciate it. (I think I won the Guffey).

I purchased a part slice of Tinnie (NM) in Tucson. It is a plessitic
axatite. I know Taza is a plessitic octahedriteso now I wonder...what
does plessitic mean?

I wanted to get one of Dorothy Norton's Mammoth books at the auction but
because I was working it, didn't find the chance. Could you please e-mail
me Dorothy or would someone please forward this e-mail to her so that she
knows I am interested. (Fred Hall mentioned it was a good).

Ok, enough I's.

Abstract

The Bedout High located on the northwestern
continental
margin of Australia has emerged as a prime candidate
for an
end Permian impact structure. Seismic imaging, gravity
data
and the identification of melt rocks and impact
breccias
from drill cores located on top of Bedout are
consistent
with the presence of a buried impact crater. The
impact
breccias contain nearly pure silica glass (SiO2),
fractured
and shock-melted plagioclases and spherulitic glass.
The
distribution of glass and shocked minerals over
hundreds
of meters of drill core implies that a melt sheet is
present. Available gravity and seismic data suggest
that
the Bedout High represents the central uplift of a
crater
similar in size to Chicxulub. A single plagioclase
grain
from the Lagrange-1 exploration well has an Ar/Ar age
of
250.7 1 4.3 million years. The location and age of
the
Bedout crater can account for reported occurrences of
impact debris in Permian-Triassic boundary sediments
worldwide.

++

 Geology of the Bedout Structure

The Bedout High is part of the Roebuck basin that
forms the
northwestern continental margin of Australia (Fig.
2.). Existing
studies of the structure include two regional seismic
surveys
conducted by the Australian Geological Survey (AGSO)
and the
Japan National Oil Company (JNOC) and two exploratory
wells
drilled 9 km apart on the top and flank of the Bedout
High,
Bedout -1 and Lagrange-1, that extend to depths of
3052 m
(9986 ft.) and 3273 m (10,738 ft.), respectively (Fig.
3, S-2).
Both wells drilled through ~3 km of marine and fluvial
sediments
consisting of carbonates with occasional interbeded
siltstones and
mudstones (Tertiary to Cretaceous) and sandstones
interbeded
with claystones, siltstones and coal (Cretaceous to
Triassic) before
reaching a breccia. (Late Permian; Fig. S-2, 15). Two
of the 14
AGSO regional seismic lines cross over the Bedout
High (Fig. 2).
In addition, four wells penetrate Permian strata (two
are shown in
Fig. 2.) offshore that help to identify seismic
reflectors that define
the Bedout structure and stratigraphy. In both the
Lagrange-1 and
Bedout -1 cores and cuttings fluviatile and marine
Keraudren
(Middle to Late Triassic) sediments are deposited
directly on top
of the breccia (Late Permian; Fig. 4, S-2, S-3).

Marc D. Fries asked:

I see that someone is offering newly discovered
Columbia basin tektites on ebay right now.
Has anyone heard of these? I haven't heard
anything about them until now and my
skepticism meter is pegged

Given that these alleged tektites look like
water-rolled pieces of basaltic scoria and the
Columbia Plateau is composed of basaltic volcanic

[meteorite-list] what is the world standards for petrographical preparations(polarization microscopy)

2004-05-27 Thread Paul H

I am also interested in the use of quartz
as index markers. This isn't in any of my
reference books. Are they attached to the

No. The person grinding the thin section uses
the bifringence of whatever minerals are
present to judge the thickness of the thin
section. Quartz is used as an index marker
simply because, it is so common as to be
present in most sedimentary, igneous, and
metamorphic rocks. When it isn't present,
a person uses whatever mineral happens to
be in the thin section as an index.

Some web pages are:

Another question I have. Is there a house
that specializes in preparation? Kinda of
like the $2 a carat faceting deals one can
get in Thailand?

There are many places that specialize in making
thin sections. Typically, a person gets what
they pay for. A quick search using Google will
find a number petrographic labs that make thin
sections. If you are going to pay 5 to 50 dollars
a gram for a meteorite, paying 15.00 dollars for
a high quality thin section is the least of
your costs.

The people that use to make the thin sections for
my research (and search for more shocked quartz)
from samples in the Brushy Creek Carter is:

National Petrographic Service, Inc.
5933 Bellaire Blvd., Suite 108
Houston, TX 77081

Their price list is at:

Their price are average for what thin sections cost.

Dear list members. Hello.
My question is: What is the world standards for
petrographical preparations. If I'm not mistaken
in English it sounds like THIN SECTIONS.

Yes, as noted above, the term is thin section.

To be more concrete I mean: form and sizes of
object glass (width,height,thickness);

The glass slide of the standard thin section is
27 x 46mm (1 x 1 7/8). Larger slides are produced,
but size might vary according to the lab that
prepares them. For example, National Petrographic
has 38 x 75mm (1.5 x 3) and 50 x 75mm (2 x 3)
size glass slides for larger size thin sections.

type of optical glue (we are using composition
named Canadian Balsam);

Hillquist A-B is used to glue slabs to slides.
However, Canadium Balsam is the standard for
attaching the coverslip. If you want to do any
microprobe, etxching, or similar work, i.e. for
identifying shocked quartz, the thin section needs
to be finished by polishing and the coverslip
left off.

linear sizes of object (I'm sure that thickness
is one to all of the world - 0.003 millimeters);
form and sizes of cover glass.

The only requirement for the size of the object
is that it is a few mm smaller than the size of
the glass slide being used. The coverslip is
larger than the specimen and smaller than
the slide.

The coverslips come in sizes, thicknesses, and
optical character that are standardized for use
in making thin sections. A person needs to talk
with the people supplying the coverslips and
get the technical specifications of what they
are selling to see if they are suitable for
thin sections.

[meteorite-list] FindMeteorites.com acquired by Paul Jim of The Meteorite Exchange, Inc.

2005-11-03 Thread Paul Harris

Hello Everyone!
Most of you don't know but Steve and I (Paul) go all the way back to late
'96 or early '97. When Jim and I
first started meteorite.com we had a page called Meteorite
Kids. This was back in the days the Internet
was innocent. I had my daughters on it and Steve had his daughter
with Northbranch. So we've had a good
working relationship ever since.
When Steve started FindMeteorites.com my first thought was Why
didn't we think of that!
I watched the site with interest thinking of how we could implement
Steve's concept if he should ever
decide to stop. When his site was down for an extended period time
we decided we should begin.
We've done classifieds before starting way back in the late '90s so we
had past experience to draw on.
Then... Geoff sent the message to the list that FindMeteorites.com
was back up I immediately called Geoff.
With Geoff's help I was able to get ahold of Steve. We started a
discussion with Steve which finalized last night
with The Meteorite Exchange, Inc. acquiring FindMeteorites.com.
Steve is very Happy!
We are very Happy!
This is truly a win-win for Steve and us but it must also be a win for
Steve's customers. The most important priority
of Steve, Jim and myself is that we take care of Steve's client base and
make sure all of YOU are happy. Jim and
I will contact all of you personally within the next week.
FindMeteorites.com will still stay of for a few months as it will
take a few weeks to merge everyone into our system as the formats are not
compatible.
Steve is away and cannot post to the list right now so he sent this
message for me to post:
 From Steve:
I am excited that all the resources of
the Meteorite Exchange are now being utilized to best serve the needs of
both the buyers and sellers.
Paul and Jim's new site is everything I hoped my original concept
might one day mature into, and we all get to take advantage of it right
now.
I whole-heartedly encourage everyone to support their new
site.
Jim and I will be sending out the announcement of our new site in a
couple of hours.
Thank you all and especially Steve for the vision of his FindMeteorites
concept.
Paul and Jim

[meteorite-list] Announcing MeteoriteClassifieds.com + 2 Free Ads

2005-11-03 Thread Paul Harris

Hello Everyone!

Jim and I are pleased to announce our new site www.MeteoriteClassifieds.com.

We have taken Steve's concept of matching the collector's wants with the
Dealers inventory, and googlized it, and
sprinkled a little ebay on it. How many of us use Google or some other
search engine on a daily basis. I can't imagine

trying to make my way around the Internet without one.

But even search engines have limitations. First you have to link to the
actual page to see if it meets your needs.
There is no pre-filter... What excellent items are you missing further
down the page? Second, if the item you're looking
for is not listed in the search engine, that search engine has no way of
going outside of it's self to find it. And third,
there has to be a web site at the other end. The search engine does not
retain the information it's self.

Jim and I have designed MeteoriteClassified.com to fulfill all of the above.

- Classified ads are for individuals and Dealers.
- Classified ads are broken down into different categories.
- Search by name, keyword, ads in last 1,2,3,4,5,10,20... 90 days, by type
of ad and so on.
- Dealer Ads can contain links to their own web page. Example Post an ad
for 1 Henbury and have a link to your page with the rest of your Henbury
specimens.
- Featured Ads show thumbnails in the listings so you can see the specimen
while scrolling down the list of ads without have to open the ad itself.
- Don't see what you're looking for? Use our free Quick Find
service. Your request will be forwarded to our list of participating Dealers.
- High Value Item Friendly... We charge by the space. Not by the value of
the specimen.
- Have a favorite Dealer? When you are in one of their ads you can See
other ads by this poster

As a Grand Opening Special we are giving away 2 free Coupon Codes to each
of you. Each Coupon Code is good for 1 free classified.
You must input the Coupon Code in the Coupon Code field or you will go to
PayPal. If you see the PayPal screen use the back arrow

and then cancel your ad and start over. These coupons expire 11/30/05

Coupon Code-1 ML11051 Expires 11/30/05
Coupon Code-2 ML11052 Expires 11/30/05

Thank you for your time and enjoy!

[meteorite-list] Phase 1 done. Phase 2 3 to go...

2005-11-05 Thread Paul Harris

Dear List members,

Jim and I have MeteoriteClassifieds.com up and running smoothly. A big
thank you to all those who placed ads...

There is no substitute for live testing...

Phase 2 is the importing of the ads from Steve's FindMeteorites site into
our classified site.
Phase 3 is something very useful. Something everyone will be able to
participate in and use for free.

Jim and I will start Phase 2 in a day or two. While we are in this process
some ads may look incomplete.

They may have pictures missing. They may even have a typo or two.

**Important** Please do not flood the sellers with comments that there are
problems with their ad.

The rough ads will slowly get polished up. Thank you!

Have a great weekend!

Paul and Jim

2005-11-10 Thread Paul Harris

Hi Geoff !

I'm just getting my emails now. Steve sent me a nice note and I have
replied back to him.
All I can say is WOW. I'm so happy for Steve! Would you guys like have a
feature article
on MeteoriteTimes? Steve's got a great story to tell. I wish it was a
story that Joel could

have had...

Great News!

I have passed along your congratulations to Steve, who is still in the

KAKE-TV in Wichita, KS aired a story about the discovery. There is now a
video clip and short article on their website at:

http://www.kake.com/unclassified/769277.html

The news story has also aired around the country on ABC and the Weather
Channel (not sure what the connection is there? Meteor SHOWER?), and is
continuing to show up on other stations. A Kansas paper is expected to
print a feature article tomorrow, so we will try to find a way to get that
on to the List as well.

Steve is a pretty happy guy at the moment, and was very pleased when I
told him about the nice posts you'd sent in.

Thanks and best to all,

[meteorite-list] AD - Reverse Auction Now Open - MeteoriteClassifieds.com

2005-11-11 Thread Paul Harris

What a great week everyone!

Congratulations Steve and Phil !! When I was on the phone with Steve
before the news broke he said he had some

exciting news... But Wow! Way to Go!

MeteoriteClassifieds is moving along nicely. We have 186 ads posted and
are receiving over 100 hits per day. I sold
a $500 Muong Nong I put up when testing the system out and I see closed ads
on Canyon Diablo 2.1Kg, Esquel 45gm,

Gibeon slice 703gm, and Odessa 2.7 Kg.

Note: All of these items had good images of them. Need help improving
your photos? See our Image Processing Tutorial

in the tutorial section on the main home page.

We have opened our Reverse Auction category. Rules are posted in the
category description.
Since we've just opened and there are no items in the Reverse Auction we
are offering everyone 1 Free Reverse Auction Ad.

Coupon Code = auction1
Coupon Expires on 11/18/05

Our Reverse Auction brings some of the fun of an on-line auction without
the worry of having your item sell too low.
Bidders don't have to be at their keyboards at a certain time just so they
don't miss out. And the accepted bid is not public

knowledge which helps maintain the retail value of the auctioned item.

Thank you all !

[meteorite-list] AD New MeteoriteTimes Feature

2005-11-18 Thread Paul Harris

Hello Everyone!

We have new features on MeteoriteClassifieds.com and in the upcoming
MeteoriteTimes for December.

http://www.meteoriteclassifieds.com/

1. you can now have up to 3 pictures on each Ad. - See NAKHLA from Cairo
ad with 2 images.

2. Jason and Matt each have an item in the Reverse Auction category

Reverse Auction Rules:
-
1. Start bidding lower than listed price or buy item now at list.
2. Bidder must honor submitted bid for 72 hours.
3. If bid rejected, Seller to notify bidder as soon as possible.
4. Bidder may submit new bids at increment of at least 5% of list price.
Example, List = $100, 5%=$5, rejected bid was $75, new bid at least $80.

5. Seller to close auction ad when bid accepted.
6. If Seller to be away from email more than 48 hours, must put On-Hold –
Returning __/__/__ in ad description.

MeteoriteTimes News

A new feature will be incorporated into MeteoriteTimes starting in
December. For years Jim and I have tried to keep up lists of links.
These lists have always been a manual process which limited their
usefulness and they always contain outdated links. On the page
below is our new Meteorite Directory. This directory is in a database
format which automates the process and has the advantage

of being fully searchable.

This is a free and open meteorite directory. Everyone is invited to add
their own meteorite pages as well as interesting meteorite
related pages you'd like to share with others. Just click down into the
section your page belongs and look for the Add Link option
on the menu bar. If everyone adds a few of their favorite Meteorite
places on the net, this will be a very nice resource of information

for everyone. If you don't find the right category for you please e-mail me.

New Meteorite Directory

Wishing everyone a nice weekend!

[meteorite-list] MeteoriteTimes Announcement

2005-12-11 Thread Paul Harris

Happy Holidays Everyone!

Many of you may have seen that we have incorporated the Meteorite
Classified Ads
into MeteoriteTimes as of December. This announcement is to let you know
that as
part of MeteoriteTimes, the classifieds are essentially free. All text ads
are free and
there is a nominal charge of $1.00 per photo. After PayPal that leaves 67
cents

which will help pay expenses.

The Tucson Information Page will be updated by Wednesday Night. (probably
very late...)

And lastly please enter your sites into our free directory. Very soon we
will be turning on
the moderation feature which will require more work for us and the more
sites that are on
before we do this the
better. http://www.meteoritetimes.com/directory/index.php

Thank you we wish you and your families all the best for the Holidays!

Everyone, please send us your own Meteorite People pages and we'll add to
these 2 sources.

Note: The Meteorite Directory
http://www.meteoritetimes.com/directory/index.php is set up so that
everyone can add your own pages or pages you would like to share with
others at any time.

A BIG thank you to Michael for all his efforts! It's wonderful to be able

[meteorite-list] Announcing - NEW FREE Meteorite YellowPages

2006-01-15 Thread Paul Harris
Jim and I are pleased to announce: The Meteorite YellowPages - Matching
Buyers with the World's Meteorite Dealers!

The Meteorite Exchange, Inc. has been providing our Original Meteorite
Dealers page for 10 years now. As part of our 10 years
of service to the Meteorite Community we have been updating our sites. In
December 2005 we presented our new Look for
MeteoriteTimes Magazine. This month, January 2006, we present a completely
new Meteorite Dealers listing page called

The Meteorite YellowPages. And... It's FREE for Everyone!

The Meteorite YellowPages allow Dealers to manage their own listings. They
have expanded descriptions, images, and can
even add their inventory as a list of keywords to the database. The
inventory keywords can be added as easily as copying and

pasting a text list.

The Meteorite YellowPages incorporates Steve Arnold's (IMB)
FindMeteorites concept into it's database core. We tried to
make this concept fit with our classifieds but we were not satisfied with
the results. It was like trying to work with two left
handed gloves. Our new Meteorite YellowPages makes Finding Meteorites By
Dealer a breeze!

Actions speak louder than words so please take The Meteorite Yellowpages
for a test drive.

1. Enter the page by clicking the link below.
2. Click on the Dealer Category - Meteorites For Sale
3. As you scroll the page you'll see 7 meteorite.com Sponsors and 15 total
Meteorite Dealers listed

4. Find the search window Search For Dealers and Items Here--:
5. Type nwa999
6. Press the Enter key or click on Go

Now Jeff's Meteorites Australia is the only Dealer listed... nobody
else. Therefore Jeff has NWA999 in his inventory keywords.
Click on the image or Meteorites Australia to view his listing or click
on the URL to go straight to his page.

Please Note: Our original Meteorite Dealers page will continue to be
available for a while as it will take quite a few months for all
Dealers to make the transition to our new page. Especially with Tucson
just around the corner.

Buyers: If you don't see your favorite Dealer please ask them to add their
site.

Dealers: Please add your sites. It's Free!

The Meteorite YellowPages is accessible from both The Meteorite Exchange,
Inc. and MeteoriteTimes Magazine.
Click Here To See The New Meteorite
YellowPages http://www.meteoritetimes.com/yellowpages/

Happy 10 Years!

Paul and Jim

[meteorite-list] Tucson Page Thanks Browser Check Please

2006-01-22 Thread Paul Harris

Greetings All,

Please do a final check of your Tucson information on
MeteoriteTimes. Everything has been posted but just incase I typoed...

A BIG thank you to Bob Verish, moni Waiblinger-Seabridge and Geoff Notkin
for helping us fix (we hope) an issue we had with a few browsers!

Please do us a favor and click on the top menu bar for either the
classifieds, yellowpages, or directory. These pages are now
full width and should leave the menu bar showing at the top of the
screen. The menu bar contains the Current Issue link which

should put the magazine's table of contents back on the screen when clicked.

If you can't see the menu bar even by scrolling the top window please let
us know what browser and operating system you are using.

See you soon in Tucson!

You can now access Martin's Meteorite Signs directly from the
MeteoriteTimes Featured section called

Meteorite Galleries. http://www.meteoritetimes.com/

There are currently 2 albums featured - Meteorite Signs and Meteorite
Hunting - Humorous Objects

To submit your Meteorite signs see Martin's page at
http://www.geocities.com/planetwhy/signs.html

To submit your Humorous Objects found while hunting reply to
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Enjoy!

Paul

Hello All,

The meteorite signs have been drifting in slowly. So slowly in fact,
that I have been able to easily manage the volume to the point where I
can include the submitter's name along with the image.

Even better, the wonderful folks at the Meteorite Exchange and
Meteorite Times have provided a home for the images. As you folks send
them to me, I can upload them into this photo database.

http://www.meteoritetimes.com/gallery/

I would like to personally thank those who have submitted pictures,
and encourage others to take some pics along your travels, or dig up
the images you've already taken and send them in.

Cheers,

Martin

Re: [meteorite-list] An unusual spam post

2006-03-12 Thread Paul Harris

Hi List,

The list of addresses could be a subset of our original list of meteorite
dealers. But bots collect all addresses on a page,

not just some of the addresses. http://www.meteorite.com/dealer_list.htm

The addresses did not come from our new Meteorite Dealers YellowPages
because not all have added their sites yet.

http://www.meteoritetimes.com/meteorite-dealers.htm

This on one of the advantages of the Yellowpages because each dealer is in
control of their listing and can decide if

they want their e-mail address listed or not.

[meteorite-list] MeteoriteTimes Updates

2006-03-22 Thread Paul Harris

Hello Everyone!

We have 2 exciting things to tell you about. First, we have brought
Current Meteorite News
into MeteoriteTimes. We are utilizing a Google feature that allows you to
click on our new
Current Meteorite News link and all the up to the minute meteorite news
articles are listed for
you to open in our article window. Since it's a search using the word
meteorite there will of course

be times when an article or two may not be relevant.

Our second news is that we have updated our Meteorite Directory
script. There are some nice new
review and rating features and it's easier to post a new link. All are
welcome to add your favorite
meteorite and astronomy links. The Meteorite Directory is for
non-commercial meteorite links. All
Meteorite Dealers can list their sites in our free Meteorite Dealer
YellowPages.

We are looking for a couple of volunteers to join our MeteoriteTimes team
to help build up the number
of links in the Meteorite Directory. Please reply to this email if you are
interested in taking on this responsibility.

[meteorite-list] April MeteoriteTimes Magazine is UP!

2006-04-06 Thread Paul Harris

Hello Everyone!

MeteoriteTimes Magazine is now up for everyone to read. We have some
announcements to make:

-- Michael Blood is experiencing major computer issues and will not have
his Meteorite Market Trends for this month.

-- We have added a Search function to MeteoriteTimes. On the top menu
bar on the far right is the new Search link.
Now you can type in a search phrase and search all the issues of
MeteoriteTimes for the term you are looking for.

-- Most exciting is a new monthly column call Mystery Meteorites. John
Gwilliam and his MeteoriteImpact Forum team
member Frank Cressy will bring a new Mystery Meteorite each month for you
to solve. For those of you who are not
familiar with John Gwilliams's MeteoriteImpact Forum, it's the absolute
best place (besides the local pub) to have an in

depth discussion on meteorite and related topics.

When you click on Mystery Meteorites you will see the meteorite and
clues. Then click on the link on the bottom of
the page to be taken to the MeteoriteImpact Forum. If this will be your
first visit you must join the forum by registering
which only takes a minute. Once on the forum you'll see lots of topics and
all the forum's Mystery Meteorites too!

As always we could not do this without the support of all our
writers. Thank you all again!

Norm,

I invite you to please share your views and images of specimens that you

supporting or opposing so that we can all better understand these amazing
objects.

And no I did not repeat it in the second article and yes I should

Please spank my hand a little harder. If this is how you share and help us

I really don't want your help.

Why don't you do something positive and write next months Tektite of the

I certainly won't be writing anything next month to stimulate thinking...
why bother

With all due respect, you are selling an idea as fact.
Ideas are fun and should be unconstrained. But don't
present them as done deals. I have dozens of
specimens of this sort. They are so uniform that they
cannot be the random melding of two tektites. I don't
claim to know what they are for sure (and I don't even
deny that you could be right, but I don't think so).
I have one that is developed on a bubble shard and
the convex exterior feature corresponds with a concave
interior feature, suggesting it was a bubble about to
erupt. This is quite fatal to your interpretation.

Tektites are particularly fun because there are still
questions like this that even us kids have a shot at
solving. But don't foist a simple idea, as fine as it
may be, on the believing public as fact. It is a fine
idea. And almost surely wrong. Sorry. But if you

[meteorite-list] New opening page for MeteoriteTimes

2006-04-10 Thread Paul Harris

Dear List,

Jim and I are just about finished with our overhaul of MeteoriteTimes. The
last few days
I've been working on the new opening page and thinking of all the wonderful
meteorites that

have been in MeteoriteTimes and which ones to choose...

No matter what configuration of meteorites I put up, the page seemed to be
lacking something.
It lacked the people behind the meteorites. There is no way to include a
picture of everyone
who has, or who will be in Meteoritetimes. We've left a couple of buffer
spots for the moment

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite Times tektite of the month

2006-04-10 Thread Paul Harris

Hi Phil and Norm,

Nice to talk to you again Phil, It's been a while! I did not have anyone
ask any questions nor offer any possible solutions
to the questions I posted in the March 2003 edition so I thought I'd post
the article again and throw out a different specimen...

Norm, this is the type of specimen I'm interested. It is a regular solid
patty, not hollow (~ 2.4 g/cc)

Norm, please let me know how many you have and the price. (off list please)

Thank you,

Paul

Norm, do you agree with the assessment of the piece in the original March
2003 edition as an impact/weld?

Feel free to respond back to the entire list at any point.

Paul,

I tried to send this off list, but the email link
doesn't work.

Sorry. But if you
want to buy a whole bunch of these, let me know!

Hi Mark!

Sounds like a good Collector's Corner article (hint hint).

I have an excellent example (I think) of a bubble coming out. I think I'll
use it

for May's Tektite of the Month.

Thanks for your input!!

I have a few of these somewhere and have many others I strangely left in
dealer boxes. There are a couple variations in these from what I have
noticed. Some have nice rims...where others are kind of sunk in with no
rim. Also, and almost more puzzling, I have seen more that are oval
rather then round. I would think...without anything to back me
back...that the more round versions with nice rims are bubbles coming
out. It just seems to me that would happen. Oval ones that are sunk in
are a little more confusing as I can't seem to image injection or bubbling
out forming such features. I am of course ignoring other forces at work
during or after tektite formation...such as motion or weathering.

[meteorite-list] paper About Tunguska Event Impactor

2004-06-23 Thread Paul H
In the March (2004) issue of Planetary and Space
Science, there is a paper discussing the identity
of the impactor, which produced the Tunguska Event,
that might be of interest to some list members.
The paper is:

Q. L. Hou , E. M. Kolesnikov , L. W. Xie , N. V.
Kolesnikova , M. F. Zhou and M. Sun, 2004,
Platinum group element abundances in a peat layer
associated with the Tunguska event, further
evidence for a cosmic origin. Planetary and
Space Science. vol. 52, no. 4, pp. 331-340
doi:10.1016/j.pss.2003.08.002

Based upon excess Pd, Rh, Ru, REE, Co, Sr, and Y
found in a peat column from the Northern peat bog
of the 1908 Tunguska explosion site, they concluded
that the impactor, which created the Tunguska event
was more likely a comet, although the possibility
that the impactor might have alternatively been a
carbonaceous asteroid. They estimated that the
mass of either the comet or carbonaceous asteroid
was as large as 103-106 tons.

I am only reporting what this paper stated. I don't
know enough about the pro and cons of the various
arguments about the Tunguska event to evaluate
their conclusions in any intelligent manner. If
anybody needs more information, he or she can
find contact information for the authors by
clicking the link, Volume 52, Issue 4, pp. 259-340
(March 2004) at:

http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/journal/00320633

and following the article link to the abstract.

(Besides my library doesn't subscribe to Planetary
and Space Science. Thus, I only have access to the
article's abstract.)

Yours,

Paul

[meteorite-list] Shirokovsky - Some Thoughts

2004-07-06 Thread Paul H
Peter Marmet wrote:

as far as I know, the lastest info is still this
special statement of the meteoritical society:

http://www.meteoriticalsociety.org/bulletin/shirokovsky.pdf

One really curious thing about the Shirokovsky
material is that its K-Ar age of the olivine is
about 270 million years. This is curious because
there are metalliferous ultramafic rocks of that age,
which contain dunite, a rock composed entirely of
olivine.

What is also most curious is that Au, Ir, and Os of
the olivine is typical of olivine found in Cu-Ni
deposits. It is curious because, there are large
ultramafic Cu-Ni ore deposits that occur in Russia
which contain olivine-rich rocks. For example,
there are seven major ore deposits associated
with the basal portions of such olivine rich
intrusives in the Noril'sk / Talnakh Ni-Cu-PGE
(Platinum-Group Elements) ore deposits. By coincidence

or not, these olivine-rich intrusives are part of
subsurface sills associated with extensive flood
basalt accumulations, called the Siberian Traps,
is about 251 million years in age, which is quite
close to the about 270 million years age of the
Shirokovsky material. The inexact age determination
made on it, could be off by 20 million years.

Within the Central Urals, there are numerous
ultramafic
complexes that contain dunites associated with rich
chromite and PGE (Platinum-Group Elements)
mineralization and ores. Any of these could be
potential nearby sources of the olivine, which might
have been associated with ore being transported or
smelted.

Given the detailed analyses of the olivine in the
Shirokovsky material, a person should be able to
determine whether any potential / possible source for
the olivine described in the above Meteoritical
Society Report exists within Russia.

I agree completely with you. Go read [meteorite-
list] Shirokovsky Texture - A Red Flag As to Its
Origin?? at:

http://six.pairlist.net/pipermail/meteorite-list/2003-June/091826.html

There I stated:

I have been looking at a number of pictures of
fragments of Shirokovsky that were shown on
various web pages and pictures of pallasites.
After comparing them, there appears to be, in
my opinion, a rather drastic difference in the
texture of the olivine grains within each. In the
pallasites, indvidual grains are equant and either
rounded or euhedral. Also, in the pallasites, a
person can find examples of olivine grains that
have coalesced together.

Examples of this texture can be seen at:

http://www.meteoriteman.com/collection/thiel.htm
http://www.meteoriteman.com/collection/dora.htm
http://www.meteoriteman.com/collection/mtvernon.htm
http://meteorites.asu.edu/pallasite.jpg

In comparison, pictures of the pieces of
Shirokovsky that I have found have a different
texture. the olivine crystals are far more angular
and variable in outline than found in the pallasites,
for which I found pictures. In fact, some of the
olivine pieces in pictures of Shirokovsky are even
flat rectagular blades quite unlike anything seen
in true pallasites. In addition, I don't see any of
the merged / coalesced olivines seen in other,
Overall, the Shirokovsky has the appearance of a
terrazzo floor made up of fragmented rocks.

[meteorite-list] Loaves and fishiness

2004-07-07 Thread Paul H
Marc D. Fries wrote:

I'm rather intrigued with Shirokovsky.

Yes, I agree, it is an interesting X-File type of
object. I might track down some metallurgists,
whom I know, to see what they have to say. Also, my
Russian wife can translate into and type letters
in Russian on my Russified Mac, if needed.

In looking at the pictures, a couple of things
jump out - first off, most of the pieces are shaped
like loaves of bread, or like ingots.

In terms of being ...then sand-cast the resulting
melt into fine sand pre-forms roughly pounded out
to look like meteorites., they seem to be too
ingot-like to have been made as deliberate fakes
formed to look like meteorites. To me, the ingot-like
forms suggest some sort of industrial by-product,
not something shaped to deceive. My (naive?)
impression is that we are dealing with self-delusion
on a massive scale instead of fraud.

That the olivines are of a type associated with Ni-Cu
ores and of the approximate age of Ni-Cu ores
associated such deposits suggests to me that whatever
created the Shirokovsky material might have something
to do with the smelting of such ores. The local Ural
olivines are far too old and not associated with
Ni-Cu ores from what I can tell and, thus can't be
their source. If Shirokovsky was made simply as a
fake,
the people involved logically wouldn't have ignored
local olivines,in favor of more distance olivines
associated with the Ni-Cu ores.

(Also, it doesn't look like it has been underwater
for 44 years. (Of course the water is cold, but
still there should be some obvious corrosion.)

Secondly, the comment that the olivines did not
equilibrate with the metal matrix, but rather
cooled quickly in a strongly oxidizing environment
is interesting. An oxidizing environment such as
...air??

This is a devasating argument. Quick cooling
in an oxidizing environment certainly puts the
stake in heart, as if it was needed, of the
meteorite interpretation.

Also, I get the feeling that the promoters of it make
much of a nonexistent connection between the hole
in the ice and what was found on the bottom of the
reservoir. Given that the fall happened in 1956, how
do they know exactly where to search in 2002 some
44 years later? Are there any records of someone
determining the location of the hole in 1956 with a
survey before the ice melted?

It would be interesting to find out what sort
boat and barge traffic uses the Kosva River near
Shirokovsky. If there is any sort of commercial
or industrial traffic, there is almost an
unlimited variety of stuff that could get dumped
into the reservoir. I suspect the promoters of this
material as a meteorite likely don't realize that
all sorts of really weird stuff gets dumped into
reservoirs.

Paul

[meteorite-list] Mysterious Rosicrucian Meteorite - What Was It?

2004-07-19 Thread Paul H
I was searching through Google News Search Engine to
see if I coulkd find anything more about the story of
the
alleged fireball that set fire to the vollage in
Egypt.
Instead the keywords Egpyt and meteorite gave
me the following article:

Rosicrucians make pilgrimage to San Jose
Biloxi Sun Herald, MS, Jul. 03, 2004
http://www.sunherald.com/mld/sunherald/news/nation/9075308.htm.

Talking about the Rosicrucians' headquarters, it
stated:

For generations of San Joseans, it's
an eclectic theme park incongruously
set in an otherwise ordinary neighborhood
of leafy streets and picturesque homes.
Its onion-domed planetarium, statue of
Pharaoh Thutmose III, 60-foot obelisk
and Egyptian-style buildings with
hieroglyphs and columns recall school-
day field trips.

Talking about children taking these fieldtrips, it
stated:

Later, as adults, they may have strolled
its lush gardens or read about the mystery
of the missing 209-pound meteorite. (The
exhibit, which had been on display 40
years, was stolen by a former security
contractor and never found.)

A 209 pound meteorite sounds like an awfully large
meteorite to have disappeared into thin air.

Does anyone know about the history of this meteorite
as to where it was found, type of meteorite, when
it was stolen, and so forth?
