Greetings to All, While I have enjoyed reading the posts and have yet to post anything myself, I feel compelled to make my first comment. NWA 5000 is indeed an exquisite lunar meteorite. However, there are bigger lunars. Kalahari 009 and NWA 10495, both exceed NWA 5000’s original mass. I’m writing now because I have been honored to curate the main mass of NWA 10495, which weighs 12.120 kg. Accuracy is important and it is impaired by exaggeration. While bigger doesn’t always mean better, when extolling the virtues of the largest lunar meteorite...size matters! Records get broken and we have new achievements to celebrate, but it is not right to celebrate NWA 5000 as being the largest lunar meteorite found…(and respectfully, nor can there be at least three one-of-a-kind works of art). [meteorite-list] Right Place, Right Time!
Dear Listee's, it seems some people have all the luck! IT SEEMS THAT WHILE EVERYONE ELSE WAS LOOKING AT SUTTERS MILL, DIRK ROSS SNUCK OFF TO BRAZIL ON A METEORITE RELATED PROJECT AND WAS IN THE RIGHT PLACE AT THE RIGHT TIME! WHAT FIRST APPEARED TO BE SPACE JUNK (THAT WAS LATER RULED OUT) WAS ACTUALLY A 40 SECOND METEOR STREAKING OVERHEAD AND CAUGHT ON SEVERAL CAMERAS. PERSONALLY, I THINK THAT DIRK MUST HAVE SOME HOW ARRANGED THIS EVENT TO SHOWCASE THE FACT THAT PART OF HIS BRAZIL MISSION WAS TO INSTALL THREE ALLSKY CAMERAS IN BRAZIL. DIRK AND A TEAM ARE WORKING ON THE TRAJECTORY FOR IT RIGHT NOW AND WILL SOON START THE HUNT FOR IT. DIRK SAID- TOO BAD THE 3 CAMERAS WERE NOT INSTALLED AS THEY WERE SUPPOSED TO HAVE BEENBRASILIAN CUSTOMS HELD UP THE SHIPMENT DUE TO TAXES OF 100%, SO ALL WERE SENT BACK TO THE US The cameras are back in Brazil now, and Dirk is working to get them set up. THE METEOR PASSED OVER HEAD IN THE CITY OF CAMPOS DOS GOYTACAZES,RJ STATE, BRASILHILE,-SHORTLY AFTER DIRK MAKING A PRESENTATION OF A 3 HOUR WORKSHOP ON METEORS AND METEORITES, FOCUSED ON MET HUNTING. THE EVENT OCCURRED ON EVENT WAS 20APR2012 AT ABOUT 11:20 PM LOCAL RIO TIME. RIGHT NOW, SPOTTY INTERNET CONNECTIONS ARE MAKING IT HARD TO DIRK TO COMMUNICATE AND UPDATE HIS WEBSITE, BUT HE HAS MANAGED TO GET SOME OF THE VIDEO AND NEWS REPORTS TO IT @ HTTP://LUNARMETEORITEHUNTERS.BLOGSPOT.COM.BR/2012/04/BREAKING-NEWS-CAMPOS-DO S-GOYTACAZES.HTML FROM THE VIDEOS, IT APPEARS THAT IT WAS A GENUINE, VERY SLOW AND EARTH-GRAZING PEEKSKILL-LIKE METEOR ENTERING UNDER A SHALLOW ANGLE. POTENTIALLY A DROPPER, AS FRAGMENTATION IS EVIDENT ON ONE OF THE VIDEO'S. THIS EVENT DOES NOT COINCIDE WITH THE RE-ENTRY OF SOME SPACE JUNK FROM A CENTAUR ROCKET, AS SOME HAD ORIGINALLY THOUGHT. I've been able to have limited contact with Dirk, he's battling a very bad cold but he's still kicking! WE SHOULD ALL WISH DIRK GOOD LUCK ON FINDING A LOT OF IT! [meteorite-list] BOLO- Stolen USU Meteorites
http://www.ksl.com/?sid=15818889nid=148 -- link to the story and video! Mammoth teeth, meteorites stolen from USU geology building June 3rd, 2011 @ 12:45pm By Mary Richards LOGAN, UTAH -- Police are trying to track down a man suspected of stealing an estimated $3,000 worth of minerals, meteorites and mammoth teeth from the geology department at Utah State University. Department head David Liddell said the thief smashed through a basement window of the Geology Building last Saturday night and stole items from several glass cases -- leaving behind some blood. Among the items lost -- 10 fossils, 25 minerals and an iMac computer and printer. These are rocks and minerals which are pretty heavy, said Liddell. They would be hard to carry off. But we did lose somewhere between $1,500 and $3,000 worth of specimens. If someone sees an individual with a dozen samples of fluorite sitting out, they could be a good suspect. Also if they see a mammoth tooth or Macedon tooth -- these are large elephant teeth -- that would be a pretty suspicious thing. -Dave Liddell Police were able to get a description of the suspect. According to Liddell, a doctorate student saw a thin man about 6 feet 3 inches tall with dark eyes enter the building Saturday night. Police say he was wearing a green and white beanie and had cuts on his face -- possibly from breaking through glass. Liddell says the person responsible likely doesn't have much expertise in the field of geology. Most of the items stolen were common minerals that could be found along the side of the road, while several valuable items -- such as a large mammoth tusk believed to be from the Ice Age -- were left behind. Maybe it's just these were pretty samples and now this person has them on their dinner table or bookshelf at home, Liddell said. For now, Liddell says department officials are monitoring websites to see if any of the items are posted for sale. He is asking the public to keep an eye out as well. If someone sees an individual with a dozen samples of fluroite sitting out, they could be a good suspect, he said. Also if they see a mammoth tooth or Macedon tooth -- these are large elephant teeth -- that would be a pretty suspicious thing. The geology department is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. Re: [meteorite-list] Impact Question
Dear Mr. Sterling K. Webb, Simple questions usually dictate a simple answer, which is what I gave, and is essentially correct. Unlike you, I wasn't nit-picking. If you want to nit-pick, I can do that also. There is no such thing as a perfect conversion when it comes to energy/matter conversion, not even with the so-called BIG BANG. To nit-pick, your statement: Plasma ball, a certain temperature, a certain energy -- that's the whole story, because that's all there is left. Is incorrect as it assumes a perfect conversion. This simply isn't true in the context of the question he asked. Simple evidence that your statement isn't so is the worldwide iridium deposition at the K/T Boundary is directly attributed to the event cited in the original question- Chixalub impact Our (mankinds) best attempt at nuclear conversion is only a few percent of the available fusionable material. Which this is a good thing or the somewhat wrongful name for the HYDROGEN BOMB would have eliminated all life on earth when first tested, as was feared by many. (which would have made the original question, my answer and your uncalled-for drival a moot point as we wouldn't be here for it) Your over-reactive reply to my answer is why many people on lists don't get involved in answering questions. For the most part your reply was technically sound and eloquent, but the attitude Let's get our physics straight. I feel was uncalled for, offensive and downright nitpicking. For his original question, bringing (Entropy? Don't ask! is totally uncalled for, demeaning and poor usage of () marks as you left the closing ) off. NITPICKING huh? ENTROPY as part of your answer IS incorrect as he asked a SIMPLE question, not a technical one. I could keep going, but 'Nuff said -Barrett -Original Message- From: Sterling K. Webb [mailto:sterling_k_w...@sbcglobal.net] Sent: Monday, April 25, 2011 12:28 AM To: Barrett; 'Stuart McDaniel'; 'meteorite list' Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] Impact Question Stuart, Barrett, List, Let's get our physics straight. The mechanisms being talked about here: burning from entry and inertia... travel[ing] into the earth are missing the point. These are not causes, but rather effects. All isolated, disconnected bodies have a certain amount of energy in them. A small asteroid traveling through space has energy that can be described in many way depending on what other body you reference it to. All bodies in free motion in a field, like a gravitational field, have a potential energy determined by their position and their motion. Imagine you are standing in your backyard with a nice chunk of rock in your hand. Motionless in your hand, held up by a force from your muscles equal to the Earth's gravitational pull, it has no kinetic energy at all, because it isn't moving. But it does have potential energy. It you were to release it, that rock would move under the invisible influence of the mysterious gravity field that we all take for granted because we've lived in it all our lives. It would start to fall... It would speed up as it fell and acquire an increasing amount of kinetic energy, more the faster it went. Oddly, its total energy wouldn't change. No, its potential energy would decrease as its kinetic energy increased because it was getting closer to the center of the gravitational field, a position of less potential energy. And the total energy of the rock, the sum of its potential and kinetic energy would be constant, unchanging. Dropping rocks is not that exciting, so let's throw that rock straight up with all your strength, as high as you can toss it. It's going very fast when it leaves your hand, but as it rises and gets further away from the center of the Earth's force field of gravity, it goes slower and slower. Its potential energy is increasing from its new position at the expense of its declining kinetic energy. Finally, all the energy you gave the rock from your muscles will be transformed into potential emery of position in the Earth's gravitational field and the rock's kinetic energy will be zero -- it will be standing still, just for a split second, at the top of your huge toss, before... It starts down, down, gaining speed all the way, as its increased potential energy is turned back into kinetic energy. Better not let it hit you... But through the entire exchange, its total energy hasn't changed, but it has been transformed from one kind of energy to another and back again. Enough about little rocks! What about BIG rocks, like Chicxulub? Well, the story is the same. If it's going about its business and a planet happens to get in its way, it will come to a very rapid stop, planets being the equivalent of a solid brick wall 8000 miles thick. Whatever kinetic energy that big rock had, it would be transformed into other forms of energy, which would act on whatever matter was present and cause another transformation of energy, etc., until the vast majority of those energies would
Re: [meteorite-list] Impact Question
A very LARGE impact such as the one you are talking about, the fire is super heated gases. The incoming meteor is traveling apprx 14,000 to 40,000 miles per hour, thus superheating everything, and a large meteor doesn't burn up on entry but travels to the earth. Upon impact and the resulting sudden stop, the inertia of it travels into the earth, creating heat, and lot's of it. The super heated gases travel outwards catching anything flammable on fire. Then you have the super heated debris that is ejected from the impact site that is also thrown out much like hot lava balls. The gases behind the meteor is also super heated to a state of super hot plasma generating more heat. -Original Message- From: meteorite-list-boun...@meteoritecentral.com [mailto:meteorite-list-boun...@meteoritecentral.com] On Behalf Of Stuart McDaniel Sent: Sunday, April 24, 2011 7:39 PM To: meteorite list Subject: [meteorite-list] Impact Question I am watching Earth: The Making of a Planet on Nat Geo right now and they are talking about Chixalub impact and I was wondering, probably something simple, but, If an asteroid the sixe of Chixalub hits the Earth where does the fire from impact come from?? Re: [meteorite-list] 8.9 Quake in Japan ZIRCONIUM
Hello Count, et al- Just a quick comment here on something most people aren't aware of. The facts are, as of a minute ago, that there has been no containment vessel breach in any of the reactors. It is being reported that one of the containment vessels are cracked. What has happened, is that some fuel rod assemblies have been damaged by loss of coolant and resulting overtemp. They can melt into each other, but they can't burn through the vessel, or start a fire, as there is no graphite in the GE design. I don't know about THIS particular reactor, but. Almost ALL reactors use ZIRCONIUM as the metal for the fuel rods and other various parts for the reactors. ZIRCONIUM ignites easily and CAN NOT be put out by water. Water just feeds it and produces hydrogen oxygen (We already know about what THAT does). I've been listen almost non-stop to FNN and CNN and I've yet to hear anyone talking about this fact. While there are a few ways to put out a zirconium fire, as long as the fuel rods themselves stay hot they really don't stand a lot of chance of putting the fire out. Smothering a zirconium metal fire with salt is one way to do it. The salt melts over the burning zirconium and encapsulates it. Even with a relatively small amount of zirconium, it takes a LONG time for it to smother and cool to safe levels. Personally, I'd like to hear some of the nuclear engineers speak to this on TV. FWIW- ZIRCONIUM is used by the Navy and Airforce in many incendiary bombs. It burns so hot and furious that it burns right thru the steel on heavily armored tanks and burns thru the cement used in bunkers. Zirconium is the wildcard that everyone is overlooking here. If the zirconium catches fire, it WILL melt and burn its way thru anything. Try Googleing ZIRCONIUM METAL and WESTERN ZIRCONIUM in Ogden, UT and see for yourself. It's nasty stuff when it ignites, but it's also the most corrosion resistant metal known. -Barrett __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

We have started sea water injection at 8:20 pm and then boric acid into the reactor. *Unit 2 At 1:25 pm, March 14th, since the Reactor Core Isolation Cooling System has failed, it was determined that a specific incident stipulated in article 15, clause 1 occurred (failure of reactor cooling function). At 5:17 pm, while the water level in the reactor reached the top of the fuel rod, we have restarted the water injection with the valve operation. At approximately 6:14 am, March 15th, the extraordinary sound was confirmed near the suppression chamber and the pressure inside the chamber decreased afterwards. It was determined that there is a possibility that something extraordinary happened in the suppression chamber. While sea water injection to the reactor continued, TEPCO employees and workers from other companies not in charge of injection work started tentative evacuation to a safe location. Sea water injection to the reactor is still under operation. *Unit 3 At 6:50 am, March 14th, while water injection to the reactor was under operation, the pressure in the reactor containment vessel increased to 530 kPa. As a result, at 7:44 am, it was determined that a specific incident stipulated in article 15, clause 1 occurred (abnormal increase of the pressure of reactor containment vessel). Afterwards, the pressure has gradually decreased (as of 9:05 am, 450 kPa). At approximately 11:01 am, March 14th, an explosion followed by white smoke occurred near Unit 3. 4 TEPCO employees and 3 workers from other companies (all of them are conscious) have sustained injuries and they were already dispatched to the hospital by ambulances. *Unit 4 At approximately 6:00 am, March 15th, an explosive sound occurred and the damage in the 5th floor roof of Unit 4 reactor building was confirmed. At 9:38 am, the fire near the north-west part of 4th floor of Unit 4 reactor building was confirmed. At approximately 11:00 am, TEPCO employee confirmed that the fire was off. At approximately 5:45 am, a TEPCO employee discovered a fire at the northwest corner of the Nuclear Reactor Building. TEPCO immediately reported this incident to the fire department and the local government and prepared to extinguish the fire. [meteorite-list] Classified Photos
I have a huge favor to ask of everyone that might like to participate. I would like to start a collection of meteorite photographs, of rocks that have been classified. Preferably the photos would be good resolution, high quality of the INTERIOR section- showing the grain structures. If you have a specimen ID card, a good photo of that would also be great. Feel free to send as many as you'd like! I'm doing this so I can start getting a good idea of what the different classifications look like for a reference. I just purchased a high powered digital microscope camera to look at my own specimens with. I have no intention of classifying my own, but I would like to get a good idea of what they MIGHT be, and see if any may be worthy of having them classified. After I get them compiled, I'd be happy to share the results with all contributors and anyone else on the list that might like to have a copy. Any additional information that you'd like to submit with each photo would be more than welcome. Information and documentation is what I am looking for, so the more the better. If you'd like to send photos but not have them included in the distributed copies, that will be fine also. Just let me know what info is or isn't for publication. I'm not trying to make any money off of this or write a book, it is just for reference and would be free to anyone that would want it. Thanks for your time and hopeful contributions! [meteorite-list] ID card/website/etc
I was really surprised at how many e-mails I got asking for the template I use for my specimen ID cards. To make it easier for everyone, I uploaded a photo example to my website so you can see it easier. If anyone else would like the template for it, just ask. Include your information you'd like on the bottom line and I can modify it for you. A couple have asked for more room on the card for other things. If I did this the card size would either have to increased, or the printing would have to be smaller. I'm not an expert in Adobe Acrobat, but if you have a specific want, let me know and I'll do my best. I was also asked how much I am charging for this...answer NOTHING. Cheap enough? I designed my own as a form, using Adobe Acrobat. Very easy to use and fill out, and easily modified if need be. I print them out 8 to a sheet, trim them with a paper cutter. I print them on heavy bond parchment paper and they look great. I get lots of compliments on the finished product, and people do appreciate them. I'd be happy to send a copy to anyone who'd like to view it. I'll even modify it for them if they don't have Adobe Acrobat. Just change out my website info for your own. Today more than a couple of Listers have asked on line for clarification of generally accepted auction policies. As I am uniquely qualified, not only as a participant in this auction, (I was bidding over the phone while watching on Ruben’s streaming video) but a professional auctioneer with over thirty five years of experience, I will offer these criticisms and explanations. I owned and have operated some of the largest auction firms in the nation since receiving my Certified Auctioneer Institute professional designation from Indiana University in 1985. Prior to that, I attended Missouri Auction School and served an apprenticeship at Sothebys in New York. I became licensed in eight states. I was the Charter President of the Nevada State Auctioneers Association. My firms have sold, and I have gaveled down, over a billion dollars in real and personal property, even some meteorites at this auction last year. I have sold my auction interests to family members and have been of counsel to our firms and other companies for the past 15 years. So the qualifying remarks having been made…here we go: SOME (NOT ALL) AUCTION POLICIES AND TECHNIQUES Auctioneers have a legal fiduciary obligation to Consignors. They should be knowledgeable of the items they sell and should be able to pronounce names and make accurate descriptions. An auctioneer has to know the retail value of every lot and have examples to quote to the audience, so that he can open the bid at a sum that encourages bidders to bid on the money. Opening a $500 item at $20 is incompetence. Getting an opening bid that is off the money...say $100 on a $500 item and then asking for $120 instead of $200 is something you learn not to do the first day at auction school. It is critical that auctioneers make the audience believe they know what they are selling, and what it’s worth, so that bidders will have confidence to bid what is being asked. Failing to answer legitimate questions from bidders ruins credibility. Never say “I have $200”. Auctioneers don’t have anything. Better to say “at $200”, or $200 is bid.” Taking a bid from an opening bidder, and then acquiring another bid and then not go immediately back to the opening bidder is insulting to him. Work the first to bidders dry…then take a competing bid. Saves time and respects the first bidders. All auctioneers should employ trained ring persons. They are invaluable in encouraging bidders, showing lots, and answering questions like “where we at?” or “what’s the bid?” It is not accepted practice for an auctioneer to bid on his own behalf, even if he does not own the goods being sold. If he does, he should never announce the fact, as it tends to discourage bidding and hurts his consignors and credibility. He should have several house numbers to sell a passed lot to, or a lot that didn’t meet an undisclosed reserve, or a lot he has bought. Do not disclose reserves. Do not announce the mail in bids. Give the mail bidder a number and use it as if in the audience. If you disclose the mail in bid maximum before selling the lot you are in deep kimchee. Phone bids should be handled by staff, with a bidder number and the auctioneer should not say “on the phone”. Merely acknowledge staff’s raised hand. You sell to a number…not a person. As a general rule do not identify bidders by calling out their name. It can do no good and may stop a bid because of a personal issue. Bid calling is an art form. One should develop a pleasing appearance and voice. Use rhythm chants on small amounts and walking chants on the big numbers. The audience gets comfortable in following you and entertained and the sale moves quickly. Start on time and be prepared. Inform the audience of the order of sale and the terms and conditions before calling for the first lot.Introduce your staff and mention who

SIMPLY put; (excerpt and disected from ENCYCLOPEDIA OF PHYSICS) ENERGY is the ability to produce work. It is a certain abstract scalar quantity that an object is said to possess. It is NOT something that is directly observable. Some say it is a process of gravity. WORK is the transference of energy from one object to another by a force from one on the other when that second object is displaced by the force. FORCE is the release of energy to another object. Big impacts of meteorites release a lot of energy due to the mighty kinetic energy the impactors have, while hitting. In fact there are no such natural events else, where punctually so much energy is released. Energy is energy, no matter how it's produced, whether by nuclear fission or by an impact of a meteorite. You could express the energy released in such an explosion also in Joule, but quite nobody would have an imagination, what let's say 120 Terajoule should be. of bolide, and generally considers the term synonymous with fireball. The bolide term is generally used for fireballs reaching magnitude -14 or brighter.[9] Astronomers tend to use the term to mean an exceptionally bright fireball, particularly one that explodes (sometimes called a detonating fireball). In geology Geologists use the term bolide more often than astronomers do: in geology it indicates a very large impactor. For example, the USGS uses the term to mean a generic large crater-forming projectile to imply that we do not know the precise nature of the impacting body ... whether it is a rocky or metallic asteroid, or an icy comet, for example.[10] SuperbolideIf the magnitude of a bolide reaches -17 or brighter it is known as a superbolide.[9][11] MeteoriteMain article: meteorite A meteorite is a portion of a meteoroid or asteroid that survives its passage through the atmosphere and impact with the ground without being destroyed.[12] Meteorites are sometimes, but not always, found in association with hypervelocity impact craters; during energetic collisions, the entire impactor may be vaporized, leaving no meteorites. TektiteMain article: tektite Two tektitesMolten terrestrial material splashed from a meteorite impact crater can cool and solidify into an object known as a tektite. These are often mistaken for meteorites. Meteoric dustMost meteoroids burn up when they enter the atmosphere. The left-over debris is called meteoric dust or just meteor dust. Meteor dust particles can persist in the atmosphere for up to several months. These particles might affect climate, both by scattering electromagnetic radiation and by catalyzing chemical reactions in the upper atmosphere.[13] Does this help any? The Lerner-Trigg Encyclopedia of Physics, pg.1137 doesn't help much. The ONLY thing they have to say is; Meteorites, which occasionally fall to earth, are thought to be mostly fragments of asteroids scattered into earth-orbit crossing trajectories by gravitational resonance interactions, and pieces of comets on other debris moving through the vicinity of Earth. Analyses of meteorites have provided important clues about the formation and early history of the solar system. NOTHING about the distinction of the three differentiations of this thread. Dictionaries reflect only common (popular) usage, and if it is not a technical dictionary, more so. I remember being told as a student taking a graduate level course in the History and Development of the English language that dictionaries may be as much as 50 years behind the times in reflecting current usage. Within the informed scientific community, among those who are meteoriticists, a meteor refers to the light phenomena of the meteoroid while traversing through our atmosphere, and the object itself remains a meteoroid until it strikes the Earth or whatever other astronomical body it intercepts. Then it is referred to a meteorite. Note also the term micro-meteorites. Sometimes these terms are used incorrectly (and sloppily) in a popular, or non-technical sense, usually by the layman (or the news media). I don't think anyone has or will ever be burned at the stake for referring to a meteoroid as a meteor, unless they are of course one of my former students (joke)! But this is the way I have always seen these terms used when used correctly. This is the way I learned it as a student who received a degree in Astronomy from U.C.L.A. and who studied under one of the world's most respected meteoriticists, Dr. Frederick C.Leonard, who by the way was one of the founders of the Meteoritical Society. (Dr. Leonard was the first Editor of Meteoritics: the Journal of the Meteoritical Society. And, he was a perfectionist with the English Language.) I recall a number of discussions in class over these definitions, such as what would we call it if we were carrying a basket, and the meteoroid were to land in the basket, rather than hitting the Earth. Dr. Leonard, would it still be a meteoroid? (He would respond by clearing his throat with a faint growl, and ignore our question. But we knew he was fond of us!) A bright trail or streak of light that appears in the night sky when a meteoroid enters the Earth's atmosphere. The friction with the air causes the rock to glow with heat. Also called shooting star. 2. A rocky body that produces such light. Most meteors burn up before reaching the Earth's surface. See Note at solar system. Usage The streaks of light we sometimes see in the night sky and call meteors were not identified as interplanetary rocks until the 19th century. Before then, the streaks of light were considered only one of a variety of atmospheric phenomena, all of which bore the name meteor. Rain was an aqueous meteor, winds and storms were airy meteors, and streaks of light in the sky were fiery meteors. This general use of meteor survives in our word meteorology, the study of the weather and atmospheric phenomena. Nowadays, astronomers use any of three words for rocks from interplanetary space, depending on their stage of descent to the Earth. A meteoroid is a rock in space that has the potential to collide with the Earth's atmosphere. Meteoroids range in size from a speck of dust to a chunk about 100 meters in diameter, though most are smaller than a pebble. When a meteoroid enters the atmosphere, it becomes a meteor. The light that it gives off when heated by friction with the atmosphere is also called a meteor. If the rock is not obliterated by the friction and lands on the ground, it is called

[meteorite-list] When will my baby fall from Heaven ?!?!?!?!
This is a combination of me sharing my excitement and anticipation and a request for help. I am about to become a father for the first time and my partner Beccy and myself are incredibly excited and happy. The little bundle of joy is now 4 days overdue so things are getting a bit tetchy and stressful as we await the critical twinge. What I was hoping is for someone to advise me if there is a website where I can find a list of meteorite falls in relation to the dates they fell so when the baby arrives I will know what birth fall will be linked with babies ?! If its affordable it would be lovely to buy a sample of the stone as an investment for the future and something to give baby when he/she is old enough to appreciate what it is and how far it has travelled ! If anyone can help or who has any baby/meteorite related info that can take my mind off the nightmare of waiting for the birth will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Ian Barrett
[meteorite-list] can anyone help me write an article !!??
Hi all. Im currently writing an article about meteorite collecting for a journal of strange phenomena and was hoping you could help me write it. I dont class myself an expert and Im merely writing it as a passionate beginner but hope I can communicate some of the excitement you all feel when a new acquisition arrives in its box !! What I wanted help with is a price guide going by current market trends. Basically an idea of the top $/gram price and which stones are the most sought after. I have a rough idea of rough market values but a more educated statement would be useful. stones are the most sought after. I have a rough idea of rough market values but a more educated statement would be useful. Even I know that the section on pricing in Nortons Rocks From Space is very out of date. Any advice on this and any other comments I could include in my feature would be greatly appreciated. Also where could I find copyright free pictures If I wanted a few to illustrate the article? Ill keep you all informed when my article is published and include credits for any help/ quotes. Thanks in advance Ian Barrett www.jellyfysh.com

[meteorite-list] TEKTITES!! ....METEORITES OR JUST GLASS ???? Discuss..........
As a relative beginner to this meteoriticalworld I'd appreciate some expert advice on something that's been intriguing me for some time. TEKTITES !! I've been reading up on them and I could be very wrong but are they not just lumps of melted and solidified sand from Earth made when a meteor collision occurs ?? There seems to be many- often hazy attempts to explain them and there are a lot for sale on Ebay, yet when you go to sellers personal sale sites they just aren't offered. I've already been looking out for what I consider meteoritical booby prizes like Faeton ! and I'm keen not to waste money on rubbish. Am I right to be cautious or are they genuinely interesting and valuable additions to a collection Also where does moldavite come into this discussion? Is that also a tektitebut cloakedinarty mystery? Thanks in advance all
[meteorite-list] Cracking Brahin Pallasite
Last night I examined my two inch slice of brahin Pallasite and I've not loked closely at it for a while. It has developed a crack all along one side and when I gently applied pressure to the slice it broke in three pieces !! It's my fave piece and I've not been collecting for long so may have missed something but I was under the impression that Brahin was pretty stable. Am I wrong ? Can anyone offer any advice for the future as to how I should store pallasites - and other pieces for that matter to prevent decomposure. Thanks all. [meteorite-list] How are stones cut ???
I've just started collecting and have been wondering what sort of machinery is needed to slice samples up. It amazes how smooth and polished the finish that the pieces I'm buying are and just wondered if any experts can tell me what sort of machines are used and how long it takes. Obviously not now but how much expense would I be looking at in the future if I did attempt to make my own slices Thanks in advance Ian Barrett _ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

[meteorite-list] faeton ... fantastic or foney ??????
Hi All. I'm a beginner to this list and collecting in general so forgive me if I'm missing something obvious but am I right to be very dubious about an advert such as this for faeton ? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=2110753070 I've tried looking for info on this substance and I can excuse the poor English of the advert if it's genuine but it does look to me like a lump of tarmac or bitumen. Can anyone fill me in as to the true nature of this substance ?
