He is the curator of the Vatican meteorite collection, the world's largest collection of falling celestial rocks, which is housed at the pope's summer residence outside Rome, Castel Gandolfo. Consolmagno gazes at the heavens from telescopes at Castel Gandolfo and through the Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope, built in the 1990s with the University of Arizona. It is located atop Mt. Graham outside Tucson, Ariz. Consolmagno taught at MIT, then joined the Peace Corps in Kenya, when he decided to become a Jesuit. His area of expertise is moons, asteroids and meteors. He is the author of a telescope guide, Turn Left at Orion, and a book about his work, Brother Astronomer. On sabbatical, he is expected to return to stargazing for the Vatican this summer. I have never hunted meteorites out of this country and I am interested in the do's and don'ts in other places. None of us would want to get in trouble and end up in some rough prison in a land far away. Nor would I wish it on anyone. Sunday Night Fireball in Ohio.. -John http://www.10tv.com/Global/story.asp?S=2472919 Licking County Reports of Meteorite in Licking County Nature provided a brief, spectacular light show Sunday night, with what aviation authorities say was a meteor flashing through the sky. The traffic control tower at Port Columbus International Airport said that pilots reported seeing the astronomical event. Tower officials said pilots indicated they thought the meteor exploded in the sky. Spotting a meteor is not something unheard of, but this one produced a large flash of blue light visible in the sky that many people called the 10TV Newsroom to report. Two reporters out on assignment during the 11 p.m. NightBeat newscast also confirmed seeing the natural phenomenon east of Columbus. There was also an unconfirmed report of the meteor making impact, thus making it a meteorite. The Newark Police Department said Licking County authorities were investigating the possibility of the space debris hitting the ground near the small community of Etna. The southwestern Licking County village is due south of Pataskala near Interstate 70. The sheriff's office said deputies searched for any signs of damage in the area the impact was reported. No signs confirming such an event had been found as of early Monday morning. Newark Police Officer Mike Oberfield told 10TV that from his vantage point, it didn't appear likely that the meteor hit the ground in Licking County. But it still made quite an impact. It looked like one of the bomb shells they shoot up into the air and sparks come out of the back of it. There's many little points of light glowing or burning. And it had white in it, along with blue and green color to it, Officer Oberfield said. I've never seen anything as spectacular as this shooting star either -- the whitest trail I've ever seen. And I've never seen one that had what looks like a twist in it -- or it was rotating. So there may not be any impression left behind on the landscape. But the event made a mark on the minds of everyone who witnessed it Sunday night. Truck drivers we found at truck stops in Licking County reported seeing the spectacle while they were on the road as far away as Indiana and Pennsylvania. A rock had struck the south side of the building, about five feet from where Lee had been working. The rock, according to Tool Time owner Pete Cali, was a meteorite. When it fell to earth, the rock struck the side of the building at an angle, and didn't cause any visible damage to the exterior. Had the meteorite struck a couple of feet farther north, it probably would have punched through the roof of Cali's building, he said. The rock was about four inches across. When it hit the building it shattered into several pieces. It doesn't look like your garden-variety rock. There are small holes in it, which look like wormholes and may have been caused by the intense heat caused by friction as the rock fell through the earth's atmosphere. There are also tiny metallic flakes in the rock, which Cali said are gold. For that reason, and because some people collect such things, the meteorite may have some value. Hi Mark, Where did the idea for this comic come from? I spent 7 days in and around Park Forest last year and found the entire community to be very friendly. My fellow hunters and I had a great time. At no time did we considered ourselves in any danger. FOR THE MOST PART, this is a very nice section of the southern suburbs of Chicago. Larry Hancock, a lifelong resident of Paragould, recently became interested in bringing the cosmic artifact back to northeast Arkansas. The meteorite, which crashed a few miles southwest of Finch at 4:08 a.m. on Feb. 17, 1930, is the third largest meteorite ever discovered. W.H. Hodges, a farmer, discovered the meteorite in a hole that measured 8-feet deep. After its discovery, meteorite collector Harvey Nininger purchased the meteorite before selling it for profit to the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. Today, the meteorite resides at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, where it is being kept on loan from the Field Museum. Hancock stated he has contacted both UA faculty member Dr. Derek Sears --who has been instrumental in the displaying of the meteorite at UA-- and Meenakshi Wadhwa, Field Museum meteorite curator, about the possibility of bringing the Paragould Meteorite home for public display. However, the current dilemma resides in the fact that, according to Hancock, UA officials have not been in violation of the loan requirements, and therefore, will remain in possession of the meteorite until the Field Museum determines them to be unsuitable keepers of the relic. According to Hancock, Sears has not been willing to relinquish possession of the meteorite, which is being used for scientific purposes at UA. If God would've wanted that thing in Fayetteville, he would've landed it there, Hancock said. With support from the public, Hancock believes that the Paragould Meteorite could be brought back to northeast Arkansas. Paragould Mayor Mike Gaskill stated that he supports the effort, but also added that Paragould needs a place to house the meteorite during its displaying in northeast Arkansas. The problem is, we don't have anywhere to put it, Gaskill said. Main Street Paragould Director Sherry Cunningham expressed much of the same sentiment. I believe that this is where it belongs, Cunningham said. But my question is 'where do you store it?' According to Cunningham, the Greene County Historical Preservation Society is currently looking into the possibility of finding a home for a Greene County/Paragould Museum. Cunningham also added that such an attraction would be a great opportunity for Greene County and the state, as the Crowley's Ridge Scenic Byway -- Arkansas' only national scenic byway -- passes through downtown Paragould. I think we're well overdue for a museum here, Cunningham said. I think we need something to show off here in Greene County. Bettye Busby, president of the Greene County Historical Preservation Society, stated that the organization would be extremely interested in displaying the meteorite once the goal of finding a home for a county museum has been accomplished. I think this is where it should be, Busby said, especially if we do succeed in getting a museum. If it turns out that there are more people interested in it, I would like to see it come to Paragould, Hancock said. There's only one 'Paragould Meteorite,' really. This is a historical thing for us, and it would be a historical justice for the meteorite to return to Paragould. At 7 p.m. on April 8, a public meeting will be hosted by the Greene County Historical Preservation Society at First Presbyterian Church. According to Busby, this initial meeting will determine the amount of interest the community has in housing a museum. We'd have to have the support of the community to begin, or there'd be no reason to pursue it, Busby said. It's going to be an uphill battle, Hancock said. Without the support of the people, it probably will not happen. According to Hancock, after the meeting on April 8, the next step will entail gathering support and sending a packet to the Field Museum to request that the meteorite be sent to Paragould. Mystery object hits home Sean Olson , STAFF WRITER 03/11/2004 High Point Enterprise No one was home when the object hit Joanie Stumpf's Westgate Drive home in north High Point. Sometime between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, a metal, egg-shaped object fell from the sky, pierced Stumpf's roof and ceiling, smashed a dent into her hardwood floor and ricocheted more than six feet, breaking a candle holder on the nearby entertainment center. My daughter is the one who found it when she came home from school at about 2:30, Stumpf said. She said something fell onto the roof, and I thought it was a tree and came right home. Given the circumstances, Stumpf and others thought it could be a piece of a plane, a meteorite or a piece of space garbage that's fallen to earth after orbiting the planet's atmosphere. Objects can fall from space, said Tom English, director of the Cline Observatory at Guilford Technical Community College. There are thousands of objects that orbit the earth. As those orbits decay, they can re-enter the atmosphere. It happens fairly frequently. It's more likely that the object came from a place closer than a galaxy far, far away. While it may have been tempting or exciting to think of the object as a meteorite or piece of space trash, David Butler, a meteorite collector and member of the Greensboro Astronomy Club, and Roger Joyner, planetarium curator at the Greensboro Natural Science Center, went to Stumpf's house to take a look at the object, and both believe that the object was likely man-made. It looks like it could have some machine heating, Joyner said as he pointed to small, bluish spots on the object. And there are facets or planes where it looks like it's been cut, he added, pointing to the jagged edges on the surface of the metal. I'd say it's certainly man-made, Butler said after looking at the object under a stereoscope. Joyner theorizes the metal object could have come off a large, industrial shredder like those used in the nearby Ingleside Composting Yard. The piece could have been shot off a piece of their equipment, Joyner thinks. This is probably a piece of their equipment, he said. These striations look like something a machine makes, and it looks blue from heating. The more I look at it, the more this looks like it came off of a piece of machinery. The facility uses large shredders to mulch trees and other debris into mulch. From the Meteoritical Bulletin #48 Moscow, 1970, page 107: A fireball was seen. It was parted into three pieces before its disappearing. After that, a cloud of smoke was seen and 30 seconds later a tremor was heard. Some of the specimens were found on a road and the largest one weighing 680 g came through a roof and fell in the hay... Hi Geoff and List, Thanks for your concern. Everything is fine here. I live at the southern point of the Outer Banks in NC on Bogue Banks, a 21 mile barrier island. We were evacuated on Wednesday Sept. 17th. Dianne and I stayed a few miles inland. The storm made landfall about 70-80 miles north of us on Thursday. Since we were on the southernmost point of impact, damage was minimal. As a precaution, I took all the electronics and inventory from my office as it is just a block off the Atlantic. It's taken a few days to get back up and running. We are very fortunate and thankful. Meteor blazes path to Park Forest By Joseph Sjostrom and Nancy Ryan Tribune staff reporters March 27, 2003, 1:20 PM CST Chunks of rocks believed to be the remains of a meteor that lit up the Midwestern sky as it exploded rained down across the southern suburbs early this morning, damaging homes and other buildings but injuring no one. The meteor streaked across the sky about midnight before apparently blowing up with a bright flash and a thundering boom. About 100 fragments ranging in size from small stones to softball-size chunks were recovered from yards, driveways, streets and even the insides of houses in Park Forest, Matteson and Steger. One piece reportedly struck a Park Forest fire station. Another grayish, five-pound rock landed in the second-floor bedroom of Noe and Paulette Garza, of the 400 block of Indiana Avenue in Park Forest. I could have gotten hit in the head by that thing, Garza, a 48-year-old steelworker, said as he surveyed the damage caused when the rock crashed into his home about 12:30 a.m. The rock punched a hole through the roof and ceiling, shredded a set of venetian blinds, ricocheted off a metal window sill, shot about 15 feet across the bedroom and shattered a floor-to-ceiling mirror before coming to rest on the floor. Garza said he was in bed when heard his dog barking and what sounded like thunder. He got out of bed and was downstairs when the meteor hit. This morning, he called his boss and told him he wasn't coming into work today. I told him what happened, and he said, 'Okay, but don't use that excuse again.' The fall could be a boon for local scientists. Most meteors, also called shooting stars, burn up in the atmosphere. The few that survive all the way to the ground are called meteorites. For one to cause damage is almost unheard of. Park Forest police said the National Weather Service was notified, and officials there confirmed a meteor shower had taken place over the Midwest and the sky had brightened just before midnight. Residents of Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Wisconsin reported seeing the flash of bright blue light as the meteor streaked overhead. Some people expressed fears the apparition might have something to do with the war in Iraq. Tia McConathy, a next-door neighbor of the Garzas, said she was standing by a window of her home and was startled by an intense light, brighter than lightning and lasting much longer. I thought, 'Is it God? Is it an attack? Are we going to die?' The light freaked me out. It felt really funny, like it went through me, she said. Several witnesses called the Tribune, including Lauren Ellis, 18, of southwest suburban Plainfield. About five of us were in the car, and we were driving down the street in Plainfield near our house around midnight, and the sky just lit up. We were in shock. We pulled over because we thought it was a bomb, Ellis said. With all that's going on in Iraq, we were wondering what it was, she said. We all heard a sound about two minutes after. It was like a sonic boom. Chris Zeilenga, 42, of Beecher, said he and his wife Pauline were watching Iraqi stuff on TV when a couple minutes after midnight, the entire sky lit up. It was like daylight, and it lasted maybe two to three seconds. We said, 'What the heck was that?' A minute to 2 1/2 minutes later, we heard a trembling sound, like a train, Zeilenga said. The rumbling lasted about a minute, and then we heard pieces hitting the house. The whole thing was strange. I've never seen anything like it. Jim Kaplan, of the Romeoville office of the National Weather Service, told the Associated Press he was outside checking a rain gauge when he saw a flash of light in the sky. First, it got very bright and the sky lit up,'' Kaplan said. ``You could see something streaking across the sky and breaking up into glowing chunks as it went from west to east.'' Lauren Bishop, 19, a freshman at Loyola University on Chicago's North Side, was in her dorm room in the Rogers Park neighborhood around midnight when she and her roommate saw the flash of light. We were in our dorm facing north when something lit up the entire sky. I didn't hear any noise, Bishop said. Then we talked to a friend in Indiana who saw the same exact thing at the same time. Please excuse the off topic nature of this post.. Although I don't live in AZ. I have made many day trips (and longer) while visiting the shows to see some of the sites around this beautiful state. San Xavier del Bac Mission - A mission founded in 1692, very well preserved, incredible architecture and easy to get to. Just South of Tucson. I am an attorney in Tampa, Florida representing a person who has pled guilty to stealing approximately 113 grams of lunar materials and martin meteorites from the Johnson Space Center last year. At his sentencing the main issue will be the fair market value of these materials. I am looking for someone who can testify as an expert regarding what price these materials would have on the open market. The sentencing will be this March or April in the US district court in Orlando, Florida. Big trouble for these kids. It cost $24 billion to recover 838 pounds of rocks, which proportionately would equal about $63,000 per gram if my math is correct. Multiply by 113 grams and you get $7.128 million. Don't forget to factor in about 30 years of inflation. This is exactly the attorney's concern. These rocks are valuable beyond imagination. Our Government takes the Apollo rocks and the Antarctic meteorites very seriously, and rightfully so. They are treasures. His job is to try and find an expert that will come up with a figure to counter what the US will say they are valued at. The kids are guilty. They have admitted it. They just want to soften the sentence and it is the attorneys job to do the best he can. I think the Government will be stern when it comes to sentencing. Yes Geoff, None of us would go near this material, we do know better. I think most of us would try and help in the recovery of any stolen material. The attorney wants to create an imagined scenario where our Government releases 113 grams of Lunar rocks for sale on the open market. What would list members and the public be willing to pay? A lot of time has been put into this case as there is no precedent here. A lot of work has been put into the evaluation of this material. During the appraisal process I received the council of several fine members of our community. One member, Greg R. was very helpful in crystallizing my thoughts in the final appraisal and I publically thank him for his input (for those who don't know Greg he's a recently retired Federal Anti-Terrorist guy). As all of you know, all appraisals are an opinion of value. A good appraisal is one that backs the resultant opinion with facts and records. In some cases value is not limited to dollars alone. To this end we have tried to be as thorough as possible. It is my understanding that guilt has already been established. It is now the responsibility of the US Attorney General's Office to present all data to the residing Federal Judge to determine the magnitude of the crime. Perhaps our List member Eric T. can speak more on the 'mechanics of the process. When all is said and done I'll post the appraisal details and proceedings on this list (unless for some reason I'm prohibited from doing so.) For my end this has consumed a huge amount of time. What a way to start the new year! But lucky me, I'll be paid $42.00 a day for my time away. That will get me about 10 grams of Cape York from Walter B. (minus the case). Middle-power Earthquake Polyakov says there were more than 100 eyewitnesses to the event. He added that scientists believed them. He said instruments rarely recorded the impacts of meteoroids and so eyewitnesses were practically the only source of information for such events. At least 30 times a year, asteroids smash into the Earth's atmosphere and explode with the force of a nuclear bomb. These smaller asteroids, between 200 and 500 metres wide, could potentially demolish a city with a direct hit or cause tsunamis - giant waves - capable of wiping out entire coastal areas if they land in the ocean. Astronomers estimate there could be between 900 and 1,300 large asteroids measuring one kilometre or more in our part of the solar system, while the number of smaller bodies could amount to 50,000. Polyakov said there were more than 100 eyewitnesses and that scientists trusted them. Hi Ann, I had no idea Goose Lake was bolted down. I like the way the museum has so many iron meteorites out in the open. Lafayette is beyond my description. You have it right when you say 'sheer perfection'. It's always nice to see world class specimens. One side of these full slices have the saw marks ground out and polished to #260. The other side is high polished to #1800. A nearly complete rim of fresh fusion crust surrounds each of these slices. L 6 full slices at $4.50 per gram. Broken Hill (1- 34 kilo stone found in1994, New South Wales) - L6 part slices - $1.50 per gram. Greetings All, For the first time, I am offering two special signed and numbered impact prints. These prints are from originals that Jerry Armstrong painted in 1995 to commemorate the impact of the Shoemaker-Levy 9 comet that hit Jupiter. One is called Impact of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9, the other is The Breakup of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9. Jerry has signed and numbered them and in 1999 I met David Levy, co-discoverer of the SL9 comet and he signed them too. Both of the prints are in mint condition and are really excellent works of art.
