Most know of him as Columbo, but he was at his finest in The In-Laws
(opposite the equally great Alan Arkin). He was one of those guys like
Walter Matthau who was always better than what he appeared in, but it took a
super long time for him to become a star.
His work with Cassavetes was impeccable.

had a long, rich association with Cassavetes.
