Hi all,

Jewelers loupe at 30x can shed light where the naked eye cannot.

I've been using for 35+ years ... it has certainly helped me discerning
printing techniques / paper surfaces.

Re: [MOPO] UPS is not perfect either!!!

2021-12-05 Thread allen day
Hi Tom (and everybody).

It's all over health care .. hospitals/health care have been using
'travelers' for years, the covid thingy has exacerbated the situation. 2
years previous (before covid), travelers (temporary help) were employed on
a minor time contract for a stop gap issue to bridge sick days / employee
loss, etc.. Now ... travelers are a majority percentage of employees which
are paid 2-5x rate .. they have the best of all worlds:
Don't like working conditions? break contract and find another, as there
are ridiculous opportunities all over
Don't like your boss? see above
Don't want to follow rules? see above
Don't agree with your contract once you are employed? see above
Break so many contracts that you are damn near unemployable? Find another
company, all they check is ACLS BLS competencies. Licensure and continuing
education have been temporarily suspended due to pandemic in many places
Many companies look the other way, because warm bodies (travelers) have
most of the cards.
I could continue with kra-kra tales that would marvel any thing you have
ever heard .. but you get the point.

2 takeaways:

Don't get sick.
Don't get old.

Godspeed

I looked over the list and came up with several omissions:

Aliens .. arguably one of the few instances where the sequel is actually
better
2 Mules for Sister Sara .. Clint Eastwood is an industry
Million Dollar Baby .. Go Clint go
Greatest Showman .. I don't care for musicals, but my wife changed my mind
once I saw this wonderful piece
West Side Story .. see above
Constantine
Hellboy
City of Lost Children
Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid

Quite a few on the list I have not seen

Re: [MOPO] selling on everyone's fav ... eeeekbay

2021-04-22 Thread allen day
Hi all,

As life rolls on, I have decided to start giving away / throwing away /
consigning / selling on eeekbay whatever I own ... that my wife and
daughter are not interested in collecting / keeping, (which just happens to
be damn near everything).

I looked into the transaction details on some items previously sold. I
noticed what appears to be some accounting errors, so natch, I contacted
and found out:

When a buyer pays for an item sold on eeekbay, they are (most likely)
charged a local tax to be paid by the buyer, and that tax is also added to
the final value of the item, and then the seller is charged whatever
percentage fee on the added final value fee.

Creative accounting?

New math?

Thoughts?

Re: [MOPO] FA: Heritage Summer Signature Auction is Up and Bidding Has Begun! Over 800 Lots!

2019-07-12 Thread allen day
Looking thru the auction catalog, I see several pieces of scarce paper,
along with time honored classics.

Not much of the pricey horror stuff (not a particular fanboy).

I'm more of a bottom feeder, value driven kinda guy.

Nice auction.

Kudos, Grey.

Re: [MOPO] What's the best movie about your profession?

2017-12-28 Thread allen day
I work in health care; there are plenty of health care flicks and related
TV series.

"The Hospital" with George Scott (darkly) reminds me of the patients who
'fall thru the cracks' in the healthcare system with avoidable results, but
improved workplace 'safety checks' have made that film distant history.

"Grey's Anatomy" not so much for the event portrayal, but more so for the
(supposed) private lives of the health care employees. The TV series can't
touch reality. Crazy stuff.

Re: [MOPO] Hi Scott , time to say goodbye

2017-06-19 Thread allen day
Hi to all,

I've been a member of MOPO for some time and do not regularly post due to
family/work AND ... I misplaced my vanity re: anyone would think I have
something important to say/type. BUT ... Filip should not leave, as he adds
a 'street view' of topics that are plainly worded. Granted, some statements
could be a little more eloquent, but what da hay. It is good to have Tom,
Tom, and the dread pirate mel back. Maybe we should not leave when the
party is starting to rev back up.

Re: [MOPO] [FA] ULTRA Rare English One Sheet - The Third Man (1949)

2015-06-23 Thread allen day
Now ... this is what I refer to as a hi-res' pic of a poster.

Just wanted to offer this follow-up.

As you know I had written to Mr Peter Snell owner of CEO of British Lion
Film in the hope he might be able to help with the puzzle of the poster.
Although he did not respond directly to me he did kindly pass on my email
to Studio Canal to respond. For those who do not know, Studio Canal
actually have just restored The Third Man and it has (just) been released
 as well as available to purchase from all the usual online re-sellers;
 watch the (restored) trailer here:
 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9yyDEDGlr0.

Mr. Massimo Moretti who is the UK Library Commercial Development Manager
for StudioCanal answered as follows [some edits]:

*... Our company controls the rights to most of the historical British
Lion catalogue. It is a library with a fascinating history, but this is
history is also quite complicated. Please accept my apologies for the
 generalizations, but, in essence:*

*Studiocanal acquired the catalogue as part of the purchase of the Lumiere
 Films catalogue in 1994-6. *

*Originally the British Lion assets were acquired by EMI Films around
1973. What makes it complicated is that British Lion acted both as a
financier and as a straightforward distributor and the rights situations
are sometimes complex. However, around 1949, British Lion was owned by Sir
Alexander Korda who used the studio facilities at Shepperton and the
distribution arm for his films produced under ‘London Films’. This is where
The Third Man comes into place. At the time The Selznick Organization
acquired North American distribution rights (the title was spelled The 3rd
Man and the poster is very different), while British Lion distributed
 internationally.*

I also asked if it might be possible if he would know the international
re-release history for the film, to which he replied:

*I am afraid our records on the International distribution arm are pretty
much non-existent, we end up relying on the BFI library and imdb.com
http://imdb.com (which is far from reliable sometimes). It does not help
that when producing artwork British Lion often relied on National Screen
Services and they have also long gone.***

He also kindly (as I did ask), a couple of lo-res images of the
quads...thought you might like to see them...I'm assuming the US (Selznick)
one would have been part of the *USA 1956/57** re-releases* (BTW - the US
 poster sucks ass). ;)

Here are the confirmations of those USA reissues

 http://www.archive.org/stream/motionpicturedai80unse#page/n347/mode/2up/search/%22third+man%22+AND+%22reissue%22

That is all I have thus far, as you know I had written to someone I know
at BFI but as yet I have not heard back. Either way, I think the poster on
 BIDLL
is a special and rare one http://bidll.com/Listing/Details/420722 -
good luck if you are bidding.

Geez fellas ... looks like a hybrid (in a 10 second comparison).

Logos at bottom left / right on HA's '49 example are on neither of the
other examples, however, the overall colors appear similar to bidll example
and HA '49.

 Isn't this the early 1950's re-release?

I thought the original release had a black background and also had more
 color.

I know the last time Heritage sold this poster which was five years ago,
they listed it as an early 1950's re-release and it sold for $900.

An exciting find has just been listed on BIDLL by a known New Zealand
 based collector.

For overseas buyers please note - *the currency is in NZ$* - that's
almost chicken feed in most other countries!

Good luck to the all bidders! Or buy now and save yourself the stress!
