Groups of Redpolls are still hanging out in the area. Some look like Hoary
(but aren't) and are light colored from feather loss (Redpolls have very
tight feathers for insulation and when they get into warmer weather they
pick off some to cool down which make them look lighter). Larkspurs are
Took a walk around Barsness Park in Glenwood Monday evening. One pair of Song
Sparrows and what I think was a Chipping Sparrow. Very overcast and nearly
dark but no belly spot. Confirmed on Tuesday AM when I heard one singing.

Yesterday, in the rain, driving at highway speed, a possible whooping crane
was spotted by a refuge volunteer, flying east over McGregor Marsh SNA,
approximately 3 miles south of McGregor. The description given was a very
large white colored bird, long legs, with black wing tips, neck held
Nasty day but a good one for birding. Cold and wind made for watering
eyes and kept me in the truck. In spite of that I got my closest look
at several birds.

While there is still no great numbers of waterfowl that I have found in eastern
Carver County, I was able to find a little more variety at the Chevalle
wetlands in Chaska. Today's birds included Canada Geese, Mallard, Hooded

Which spring migrant brings you the greatest joy? Which migrant - when you
first see and/or hear it - causes you to stick a fist in the air or dance a
bit of a jig (or however you express yourself)?
Candidates, for me, include the first Red-winged Blackbird and Sandhill
Cranes - for they
After reading Brian Smith's report from Sleepy Eye, this morning I had to
check the one spot I felt has the greatest potential here in Kandiyohi
county. Sure enough: 6 lesser yellowlegs, 5 greater yellowlegs, one
pectoral sandpiper, one golden plover (entirely in basic plumage), 16
killdeer.
After not seeing any redpolls for a couple weeks now at the Interpretive
Center's feeders here at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, I was
surprised just a few minutes ago to see a single Hoary Redpoll at the
thistle feeders hanging from a shepherd's hook pole behind the

A science teacher ( Jerald Yourczek) that knows a fair amount about birds
reported his sighting of 2 large white cranes (much larger than a Great Blue
Heron) next to a marsh by his property. He said the pair flew off towards
the north and flew like Sandhill Cranes not like herons. I suggested
We are officially launching the MNBBA website today (www.mnbba.org)! It

Today at the Silver Creek Reservoir (on County Road 11 northeast of Rochester)
were at least 50 Canvasbacks. I am usually only lucky enough to see them about
once a year, so if this was my only day it was a good one. Also present there
were eight Bald Eagles, one Harrier, many
My favorite spring migrant is the Eastern Kingbird followed by Common
Yellowthroat Warblers, Sandhill Cranes, Northern Pintails, and Loons.
The first warbler of the year is always worth a fist pump. Too bad we
can't swap the Yellow-rumped for something like the Blackburnian or

The river has risen considerably, even since yesterday, overflowing
part of the trail just west of the 35E bridge. In low-lying areas,
many stumps and trunks are completely surrounded by water. One such

appeared to be harboring a

We hosted and photographed a first year GCSP today from 1:00pm - 4:30pm. It
made 3 appearances during this time and stayed for 2-5 minutes each time. The
problem is that the bird is ONLY visible from inside our living room. There
simply is no place to view the bird from the

Hi all,
I just received a call from a home school group asking about banding stations
SW of the metro that give demonstrations. It sounds like this group is about an
hour SW of the metro.
You can reply directly to my email. Thanks in advance.

Good Day To All,
Well where to start, Had a fox sparrow show up yesterday and 2 today.?
The Horay Redpoll is still around along with 317 Common Redpolls and that is
conservative, as I took pictures and counted the birds in the still frames.?

So much for our Spring thaw. At least the new snow hides the
miserable mud pits that developed earlier in the week.
