Found five ECDc's in the town of Winthrop today. They were just west of the
large corn pile in front of the ethanol plant. When we first saw them they
were high up in a decideous tree across from the auto parts store. After a

Hairy Woodpeckers have a very common practice of stripping bark from =

This is the normal time of year to see young goldfinches. Our feeders =

On Friday 9/1/06 we had very good success on Cty Rd 13, north of Big Falls
in Koochiching County. Between the rain showers the warblers were
outstanding in many places along the road. Also present were the following
birds and their locations.
Boreal Chickadee: 7.9 miles north of State Hwy 71
Found a Carolina Wren in Courthouse Park today. Best description of
directions is in south central part of the park along the stream. Good
numbers of migrant warblers were also found but not spread out much as most
were in only two or three waves. Listened for chickadees and when found

Refound the Common Moorhen on Saturday. Not sure this is the same place
Phillip referred to but ours was at the quarry road, which is two gates
south of the Minnesota River on Cty Rd 15. The bird was in the open water
almost right next to the road and was actively calling, presumably trying to

southern one was calling from the east slope from one end of the gully to
the other end. We were never able to see it but the call was as clear as
could be for about a half hour so we know it never was far from the trail.

Had a couple of interesting birds at the Pipestone National Monument on
Saturday, June 6th. A Blue Grosbeak was singing just upstream from the
waterfall. Also a late Olive-sided Flycatcher was rather obvious feeding
from the tree tops along the stream just west of the main woods.

know that it was seen yesterday afternoon on a mud flat right by the road
until 6:30 PM. We know it was 6:30 PM because we arrived at 6:31 and missed
it by one minute. One too many stoplights I guess.

starting to produce some mud flats. We found a flock of about 100
shorebirds (all peeps with most being white-rumps) at the public access dam

in 15 minutes a large flock of semi plovers (12). bairds, least , and semi
sandpipers had come in. Along with the wilsons and ruddy that made for a

We spent the last three days birding in 13 western and southwestern
Minnesota counties. Highlights are as follows.
Sharp-tailed Grouse-County Road 7, Lac Qui Parle County, southwest side of
Big Stone Refuge, 3:00 PM, 2/13/06, with a feeding flock of about 35
pheasants there were at least 2
Came across two different groups of Gray Partridge in Nicollet County while
looking for the Snowy Owls that had been posted in the past. One group was
on 452nd Street just south of Oak Leaf Lake in the eastern part of the
county. The second group was one mile east of the intersection of Cty Rds

a spotting scope that he found at Scharr's Bluff.

Tried to bird in the Duluth area for the past couple of days. Rain
certainly does get in the way.
The ball fields at Park Point were seriously flooded. Water was even
covering part of the road in that area but that will clear up very soon. On

State Parks today. Came across Wilsons, Canada, and Blackburnian Warblers
among the more common species. The icing on the cake was a Yellow-bellied

Watched a single male Great-tailed Grackle eat snails at the Somsen WMA,
which is on the corner of State Hwy 14 and Cty Road 12, just west of New Ulm
in Brown County. There was also a female (presumably a female as we presume
that it is to early for a juvenile Great-tailed Grackle to be flying

north of Hwy 55 on County Road TTT. This is just north of the Meeker County

Found one Eurasian Collared-Dove today in the town of Heron Lake. The bird
was feeding on the ground on the west side of the grain elevator and spent
some time sitting on a telephone wire in the same area. It went to roost
later in the day in a tall spruce tree. This tree is just across the old

We saw and heard one bird today at the corner of 1st Street East and Berlin
Avenue South. This is the same area as in the past two years. As we were

Saw a very interesting bird today on Gorman lake in Le Sueur County. It
appeared in all aspects to be a hybrid between Canada and White-fronted
Goose. While it was the size of the 150 Canada Geese that it was with, it
had a pink bill and pink legs that match the colors of a white-fronteds

Spent several hours today walking many miles on the various trails in =
this area with no luck finding the

When we found the Great Gray Owl near Dudley Saturday morning we decided to
follow it at a long distance for awhile to see how it fed. Amazingly in the
next 10 minutes it moved nearly three blocks to the area across the

should be aware that this will mean that the DNR will resume getting rid of
Mute Swans in their attempt to introduce Trumpeter Swans.

After many visitors it appears that the towhee has left during the night as
we have not seen it this AM. The last time it was seen was last evening.
The consensus is that the bird was definately a first fall bird but the jury
is still out if the bird was a female or a male. While the bird

Looked at a towhee in our backyard this morning and were extremely surprised
to see it was a first year female Spotted Towhee. We do a lot of ground
feeding and the yard was covered with more than 60 juncos plus a lot of
white-throateds and a few Fox Sparrows. Not to count all the other normal
The bird was around off and on all day but seems to be very skittish and
also seems to be a little concerned about the Turkeys that are around off
and on all day. If you want to come and look please feel free to do so.
Park in our driveway and walk around the house to the left or east side. I
Black-headed Gull at Spirit Lake spent nearly all day flying around and
feeding in the lily pads on the Iowa side of the border. Numerous people
were present from 7:45 AM to late afternoon and during that time it went
accross the road into Minnesota only once (about 1:15) to check out a large

birders found a Sprague's Pipit at Red Rock Prairie.

Found a single Eurasian Collared-dove in Marietta today. Bird was on a wire
one half block south of the American Legion.
This was a typical bird. Larger than Mourning Dove, medium gray all over,
with a white bottom to the square tail and black outer tail feathers on the
bottom side of the
Refound this bird from 5:30 to about 6:00 this evening. Look in the tops of
the white pines that are kind of out in the open, near the middle of the
pine area.. This species tends to feed in the tops of trees in its normal
habitat and the same is true of this bird. We watched it do some short

At 6:40 PM tonight the Black-necked Stilts were still there in the rain and
not acting like they were going anywhere soon. Be forewarned that on Monday
there will be construction workers in the ponds and it is wise to stay out
of their way so these excellent ponds are not closed to birders in the

Black Scoter-Thief River Falls sewage ponds on the AM of the 14th
Merlin-apparent nesting bird in the Oak Grove cemetery next to Red Lake

There were 11 American Avocets in the marsh one mile west of Montrose on
Highway 12 around noon today. They were gone in the evening along with
nearly all of the other half dozen or so species that had been present.

We had a very high count of 1490 Sandhill Cranes in Norman County today.
The birds were along a 1 mile stretch just to the north and west of the
Agassiz-Olson WMA and flood control area. This is one mile south of the
Polk County line and about two to three miles west of County Road 30. To

mating but although we watched for quite awhile we never were able to find a
nest. They were in the area of the south end of the business district on
several streets.
Also of interest was a Bonapart's Gull on Thielke

Highway 12 today. This is a bit early (according to Janssen ties second
earliest date) and the plumage confused me for awhile. The bird looked a
lot more like a European Golden Plover if you were to go by the Sibley
Surprisingly was still present this AM at the Paynesville sewage ponds.
First thing this AM it was in the river just to the west of the ponds (not
visible from the road but the bird seen in flight from the river.) About
8:30 it flew over to the sewage ponds and settled with the large flock of

Just hear that as of 2:45 the Brant was sleeping on the dike not far from
the County Road 33 entrance to the sewage ponds. It had spent some time
during midday down in the river again. The birds appear to be using the
short grass of the dikes for feeding and the river for their water supply.
8:15AM today, a mile and a half north of the Sand River
9:00AM, mile post 304 on Highway 1, this is about 7 and a half miles west of
Highway 1
Also today there were Red Crossbills in the pine plantations on the Mitawan
Lake Road, and the juvenile Iceland Gull and Harlequin Duck were in the

White-winged Crossbills-Yellow Medicine County (cemetary on 23 at Hanley
Falls), Murray County (cemetary 1/2 mile north and 1/2 mile east of
Westport)
Red-winged Blackbird-50 bird flock headed north in Pipestone County and
included at least 3 Brown Headed
The Snowy Owl just north of Hutchinson has apparently moved 1 mile east to
County Rd 61 and about what would be the equivalent of 210th Street if it
occured there. The bird was present yesterday AM at 7:30 and today at
4:30PM. Today it was not present at 4:05PM so we do not know where it hides
