Pastor Al,
Thanks for posting. I too would love to see more posts; I get e-bird and
also signed up for mnbird's list, which I just found out about not too long
ago. I appreciate posts and don't mind reports covering more "common" birds
(other than something like a house sparrow). I love going out
Chris,
Thanks much for the taking the time and effort to stand up for ebird. I'm
sure it's as great as you say and it is much appreciated. At some point, I
will take the time to get re-acquainted with it, since it apparently will
inevitably engulf all other birding databases, kinda like The Borg...
A little disturbing the negativity in this email but i'll try to
address all of it. Keep in mind I just started using Ebird regularly a
little over a year ago when they went global. Before that I wasn't
that interested because I couldn't pull in all of my sightings from
around the world. So
27;t want their particular
birding spot overrun with other birders. This suspicion was likely untrue, but
it is what I thought years ago.

I tried to use ebird years ago (circa 2004) and it was horrible. I gave up.
I heard now it's better so I went back late last year. After farting around
on it for about half an hour, I still think it sucks.

For what it's worth, there were 20% more posts on MOU-net in March 2012 than in
March 2011, and about 30% more in Feb 2012 than in Feb 2011.

I'd actually be inclined to believe most Mou members don't use ebird. For
example, I haven't lived in Minnesota since Oct of 2009, but I'm still number
three for lifetime ebird list in Minnesota with only 311. If one looks at the
moumn listing page there are well over 150 people on the 300 cl
I have been on posting hiatus for a while due to a technical matter: my email
changed ever so slightly from my registration one and I could not figure out
how to alert the system to that fact. I would receive the automatic digest but
could not post to it. In the end I simply re-registered and no

Alex et. al,
I believe the reason you do not get your own posts is because you are
originating them from a gmail address. I too use gmail and bcc myself when
I post now, otherwise I don't get mine either.
Years ago, I used a Hotmail edress and would always receive a copy of my

Speaking only for myself, but once a person gets into the birding
community, s/he may find there are many other ways to get involved and
active in the birding life that might rightfully claim more of their time.

Good question!
I know the main reason I don't post as often is because I don't
receive my own messages via MOU listserve when I send an email message
to it. I am an MOU member. I receive all MOU listserve posts UNLESS
they are initiated by me. I've asked about this before but it's never

I subscribe both to MOU & Wisbirdn (former birding home, prior to 2004).
I wonder why there are substantially less posts on MOU?
Don't hear me wrongly, this is not a criticism, more is not necessarily better.
